"early today" starts right now. good morning. glad you're with me. i'm frances rivera. we begin with breaking news. authorities say several people, including a child, are dead after a helicopter crashed into a radio tower in houston. it happened shortly before 8:00 p.m. local time in the city's second ward neighborhood. at a press conference, police did not provide an exact death toll, but four people on board were on the private helicopter. >> multiple fatalities, including a child. we don't know the age ranges yet, but that we are pretty sure. >> no one on the ground was hurt. the crash sparked a fire that spread as far as three blocks before it was stopped. the ntsb and faa will investigate the accident. now to georgia where seven are dead and six critically injured after a gang way collapsed on saturday. hundreds were gathered on the

sapalo island for a cultural festival when tragedy struck. here's jesse kirsch. >> reporter: these are the desperate moments as a deadly tragedy unfolded on georgia's sapolo island south of savannah, where hundreds had gathered for a cultural celebration. bystanders rushing to help after officials say a ramp leading to a ferry collapsed saturday, plunging roughly 20 people into the water. this floating dock is supposed to have a gang way that extends over to the mainland. but look what's left of the gang way. it is now mostly submerged, underwater. officials believe it suffered a catastrophic failure on saturday, leading to at least seven deaths. among those lost, a state cha chaplain. from charles houston. his daughter heartbroken. >> my dad was the light of our family. a rock. >> reporter: marcia armstrong heard the gang way buckle and fell in the way. then a stranger saved her life. >> god sent me an angel.

she said, "i got you, don't worry, just float." she swam back in, she swam me up to the shore. >> reporter: officials now investigating. >> it's my understanding that the structure collapsed in the middle. one end of the gang way on the landward side is still attached. i can't tell you exactly at this point in time what happened. >> reporter: j.r. grosvenor said he helped rescue a baby who went underwater. >> stopped breathing. i put her in the boat and brought her to the ambulance, to the mainland side. she made it, she's safe. >> reporter: officials say saturday's event brought hundreds more people to the island than would be expected on a typical day. is it possible that extra stress put on the infrastructure with so many more people could have contributed to the collapse? >> at this time, i wouldn't rule out anything as being a possibility. >> our thanks to jesse for that report. the race for the white house, 15 days left until election day. vice president harris will sweep through three different swing states today. former president trump will tour

rally, which she responded to last night on msnbc. >> so you have to tell kamala harris that you've had enough, that you just can't take it anymore. we can't stand you, you're a [ bleep ] vice president. >> what you see in my opponent, a former president of the united states, really is -- it demeans the office. >> elon musk, the tech billionaire, made a surprising promise while campaigning for mr. trump over the weekend, saying he will give away a million dollars every day until the election to a randomly selected pennsylvania voter who signs his petition in favor of free speech and the right to bear arms. on "meet the press," pennsylvania's governor josh shapiro questioned the legality of that give-away and said it's something law enforcement should be taking a look at. it's unclear if federal authorities are looking into the matter. elon musk did not respond to a

residents living near the branches of this institution, which has a regular bank, they are basically situated around residential buildings and residential areas, and told them to evacuate. kind of prompting vacation from several different areas. shortly after that, they carried out air strikes both in beirut and elsewhere in lebanon. talking about that leak that you talk about, the documents now, u.s. officials did confirm that. there is an investigation open on the legal two top secret u.s. documents that allegedly devibe or assess israel's plans for an attack on iran. now, they first appeared on the telegram channel of the middle east "spectator" which describes itself as an independent news aggregator, even though it is considered to be pro-iran. one document describes how the israeli air forces are preparing for an attack on iran. multiple aircraft. while the other document talks

about how the israel defense forces that continue its munitions preparations for what it describes, and i quote, the document describes as certainly an attack on iran. frances? >> claudio la von go, thank you. death row inmate robert robertson may testify today at a texas legislative hearing on his case. robertson was set to be executed last thursday but obtained a temporary restraining order with hours to spare. now he is expected to testify, challenging his conviction in a controversial shaken baby death case. over the weekend, the texas a.g. asked the supreme court to dismiss robertson's subpoena, suggesting the state may not produce robertson for the hearing. sean diddy combs is facing another slew of lawsuits accusing him of sexual assault and rape. nbc news has obtained five civil suits filed in the southern district of new york. one of the plaintiffs accuses combs of raping her when she was

13. representatives for the rap mogul did not return nbc news' request for comment. combs is currently being held without bail in brooklyn on federal racketeering and sex trafficking charges. he denies criminal wrongdoing. the trial is set to start may 5th. hurricane oscar made landfall in cuba as the country continues to struggle with blackouts. the country's electrical grid collapsing again sunday, plunging the country into darkness for the fourth time in two days. schools across the country have been canceled through wednesday. officials say only essential workers should report to work today. oscar brought strong winds and rain to the islandsnortheast. cuba warned of an extremely dangerous situation. new mexico's chavez county is under a state of emergency. historic flash flooding left at least two dead. on sunday, the state's national guard continued search and rescue efforts. more than 300 people were rescued from the treacherous

waters. a stranded dog was pulled to safety. officials say 38 people were taken to local hospitals for injuries. nearly six inches of rain fell in roswell in a matter of hours, breaking the previous record set in 1901. water levels have started to recede. some areas remain dangerous, and police are warning residents to stay off the roads. let's get now an october warmup checkup that's hitting much of the country. nbc meteorologist michelle grossman is tracking those temperatures. >> it's a big-time warmup. we're looking at temperatures 10, 30 degrees above normal for this time of the year stretching from the northeast to the great lakes and midwest over to the northern plains. temperatures into the 70s and 80s. we're going to chase october records not only today but also tomorrow. philadelphia today 80, 15 above normal for this time of year. take a look at minneapolis. 27 degrees above normal. rapid city, you're warm too. chicago, 24 degrees above what is typical for this time of year. 70s and 80s as well.

on the proposal on wednesday. on that day, boeing will report their third quarter results. the first ones under new ceo kelly auburn. the group warned it would post a heavy loss as the company continues to deal with the safety crisis fallout after the alaska airlines incident earlier this year. a few days ago, the company also announced job cuts of 10% of its workforce, so around17,000 jobs. now, on to different news. pepsico confirmed the company will add 20% extra chips to the large bags of ruffles and tote tease toes for the same price. they hope that reversing their shrinkflation will help in winning back some customers frustrated with shrinking packages and higher prices. states with high inflation, a lot of customers cut back on nonessentials or turned to more affordable store brand items. pepsico hopes by shifting this
