tsirkin. julie, what is the harris campaign aiming to accomplish today by holding these town halls alongside former republican congresswoman cheney. >> reporter: 15 days out, she's trying to attract those anti-trump republican voters in these key rust belt suburbs from pennsylvania through wisconsin finishing the day in wisconsin. we're in oakland county, couple miles away from detroit, of course here harris could make inroads with those republican voters, with those who are turned off by trump, that's why she has liz cheney with her. at their first stop in pennsylvania, it was largely focused on democracy. you'll remember cheney was a prominent member of house republican leadership at one point, he then pretty much got kicked out and decided not to run for congress again after falling out -- or having a falling out with trump and that wave of republican leadership, certainly this is telling for

harris two weeks out from election day what she's spending her time doing here as she hopes to court these voters on economy and reproductive rights. >> vaughn, you're following the trump campaign in north carolina, of course hit hard by hurricane helene, what is the former president saying about relief efforts there? >> reporter: exactly, this is a major north carolina swing for him not only is it a battleground state where he's invested a lot of political time, but three weeks after hurricane hello len devastated the western part of this state, nearly 100 passing away from the storm including about half of that accounting in the asheville area, we're at a rally where donald trump is about to take the stage in greenville. earlier this morning we went and looked at some of the storm's damage and talked to some of the folks in the community there. listen to a question and answer that i had with him specifically

on any concerns that he may have about the storm impacting the legitimacy and the credibility of the north carolina election outcome. take a listen. >> is there any concern or specific reasoning that you have to believe at this point in time three weeks in that the results of the election in north carolina won't be credible or legitimate because of this storm's aftermath. >> no i think it's the opposite. so impressed and i think they have a pretty good system here. >> reporter: of course, now part of this response was because earlier when the storm initially struck he suggested that fema was all but intentionally providing aid to residents in north carolina especially in the republican areas in donald trump's words, that called into question in an election that we expect to be very close in north carolina come election day, the days after the election, if he were to lose could he place some

blame on the democratic white house's administration response to his loss. he said he's happy with early voting so far and the election system in place so far. >> as the candidates he it the campaign trail, early voting the under way in eight more states today. >> voters can now cast their ballot in person in these states -- alaska, arkansas, ko, connecticut, florida, idaho, south carolina and texas. nbc news correspondent ryan nobles on the road in texas, literally in his car, not driving, i hope -- >> i'm not driving. >> what do we know about turnout so far? >> reporter: we started the day in dallas, just outside of dallas at a voting location there and there was a massive line right from the beginning of the day and it continued on

during our entire time there, we're headed now to south to houston, where we're also expected to see big long lines of people taking advantage of the opportunity to vote early in this election. half of the country is likely to vote early even in places like texas where it's not necessarily something they're accustomed to, we talked to voters today about what is compelling them to get to the polls early. this is what they told us more people are serious about their vote this time. which is great. i think that's a good effect. i want everybody to vote. i've done some volunteering and i talked to some people and found that more people are activated. i'm hoping we'll get more people out to vote. >> i wanted to take advantage of the early voting. i didn't want to be bothered with any long lines. you can hear him laughing because the line was really long today. voting officials here in texas.

>> all right. ryan on the road, thanks so much. we appreciate your reporting. the u.s. is investigating the apparent leak of two highly classified intelligence documents. >> the documents appeared to detail israel's preparations for a potential strike on iran as well as america's concerns about those plans the middle east has been bralsing for israel to retaliate against iran for weeks. >> nbc news senior national security correspondent courtney kubie, what more do we know about these documents and who might be responsible for that apparent leak? >> reporter: so that's really the huge question right now, who could be responsible for that, the u.s. is investigating and in fact we heard from the national security council's john kirby earlier today, he said the department of defense is investigating that, we asked dod

officials about that they're not commenting about whether they're leading the investigation. as you said, kate, they're highly classified documents, they look at how israel could ultimately respond to iran's attack nearly three weeks ago on israel, you'll remember that iran firing nearly 200 ballistic missiles at israel several weeks ago, since then there has been widespread expectation and in fact, israel has talked about how they'll retaliate for that, but the big question has been how could they respond, well, these documents lay out some of the ways that israel is not only ready to respond with missiles, but also how they could be prepared to defend against another attack by iran, highly classified documents, the sort of things that the u.s. is

candidly putting together rarely see public. >> what's the potential impact of this leak both in the middle east and here in the country? >> reporter: so far, u.s. officials here are telling us they don't expect this to have a big impact on u.s. national security, but it really underscores what has been a string of these sort of incidents in recent years, putting classified documents in a public space, on a website, and it really underscores the problem that the u.s. government has had in keeping some of these documents, again, highly classified, top-secret documents secure. >> all right, courtney, thank you so much. time now for today's cnbc money minute. mail carriers reach a tentative deal with the postal service. about 200,000 mail carriers

dramatic video shows the moments a helicopter crashed into a radio tower in houston sunday night, killing everyone onboard. we want to warn you the video is hard to watch. the man captured this video on his cell phone, in it you see the helicopter burst into flames before it crashes to the ground, the massive radio tower then topples over behind it. now officers are combing through the area to find debris from the crash. steven romo is following the developing story for us. steven, what investigators looking at right now. >> reporter: kate, investigators are trying to zero in on what caused that helicopter hit the tower in the first place, if the lights were on, everything was in compliance on that end, to figure out what killed those four people onboard, among those

victims was a child. we do know this happened around 8:00 p.m. on sunday. as day broke today it was evident how large this debris field was, at least 200 yards this spread, a fire also quickly spread, there's a fire station right near where this happened, east of downtown houston, they were able to respond within minutes, but the fire was spreading so quickly, they're still trying to process that scene right now. an update we just got from authorities. >> what we'll do is conduct a three-dimensional scan of that area, including photographs, which will take approximately four to five hours, it may take longer, once that's done within two to three days, the houston police department will provide that evidence to the ntsb and the faa. >> federal authorities are investigating here.

police are also asking people who live in the area to report any debris that may find on their properties, kate. >> steven romo, thank you. officials in georgia are investigating what caused a ferry ramp to collapse killing seven people on saturday dozens of people were standing on the dock to georgia's sapelo island, where the gangway gave way, that sent more than 20 people into the water, crowds were gathering that day for a celebration for descendants of black slaves in the southeast. this gangway was built relatively recently, in 2021, what more have we found out about what happened? >> reporter: yeah, the georgia department of natural resources is investigating the cause of this accident, it looked kind of like the gangway you see behind me, we're starting to hear accounts from eyewitnesses and people who fell into the water, we interviewed a woman named marsha armstrong. let's listen to what she had to

say. >> i went under water. i'm just trying to kick up, to come back on top of the water, something told me to stop fighting, stop kicking and lay on your back, i laid on my back and all of a sudden, god sent me an angel and she grabbed my hand and she pulled me to shore and she said, i got you. >> reporter: just a hour rick story there, the georgia department of natural resources did say they do not believe that a boat hit the dock, another thing to note that this island is only accessible by ferry, they typically get 100 people per day visiting the island. but this weekend, because of that celebration you just talked about there were 700 people visiting the island, so it's unclear if perhaps that inundation of people had anything to do with the gangway collapse. >> so many stories of loss and

of rescue there, have you learned anything more about the people who died in the collapse. >> reporter: yeah, so the seven people who were killed were all senior citizens ranging in age from 73 to 93, we do know one of them was a pastor, charles houston, he was with the georgia department of natural resources and his daughter spoke to us and said he died just the way he lived by helping people. she was there at the time, too. dived into the water trying to save the people who were drowning and unfortunately still seven of them were killed, an additional eight were injured. taken to local hospitals, six of them with critical injuries. >> priy, a, what comes next in this investigation? >> reporter: well, we're still waiting to hear from investigators, there's still a lot of questions about exactly what caused that gangway to collapse, we'll be visited by some members of the black caucus

he's accused of killing cashapp founder bob lee last year. nbc bay area's ginger conejero saab is at the san francisco courthouse with the latest kazari bomani. the sister of nima momeni, the man accused of killing cashapp founder bob lee, takes the stand once again this morning. she continues her key testimony, talking about the days and hours leading up to lee's death. now, this is the

second day that kawsar momeni is on the stand. here she is making her way into the courtroom earlier this morning, accompanied with her mother, who has been a constant figure here during these proceedings. now, kassar's testimony resumed a little before 10:00 this morning, with direct examination from prosecutors, who first focused on a series of texts exchanged between the accused. nima momeni and his sister. prosecutors also reviewed previous testimony from miss momeni, describing the time that she learned of bob lee's death, saying that she was devastated by his death and also describing that time as a period that she might never smile again. now, this is the first time that bob lee's ex-wife and kawsar are in the courtroom. at the same time, other members of bob lee's family are also present, including his father and his daughter. there are also questions asked this morning around the drug use of nima

momeni in the days leading up to bob lee's death. now there's also testimony that is focusing around a private encounter between miss momeni and a third party that has been identified as a drug dealer, potentially another key person in this. we will continue to follow this bombshell testimony. you can find the latest on nbcbayarea.com in san francisco. ginger conejero saab, nbc, bay area news. thanks, ginger. the search is on for two missing teenagers right now from the east bay. they have not been seen since last friday, when they attended a homecoming dance at san lorenzo high. michelle olivas sanchez is a sophomore at the school, and she brought elvis moreno as her date. elvis is actually from mendocino county. the teens were supposed to meet their parents after the dance, but never showed up. officials say they were last seen a few blocks away from the school. they have not answered their cell phones. michelle was last seen wearing a pink dress, and elvis was wearing a black suit and pink vest. people living in the oakland hills are

finally returning home after a fire broke out friday afternoon. this is new video into our newsroom showing the area that was burned. firefighters are still on scene looking for any hotspots. the keller fire started in a neighborhood just off keller along 580 and spread into the hills. two homes and 15 acres were burned. crews managed to bring containment up to 85% over the weekend. the oakland fire department then lifted evacuation orders last night, and neighbors say they were grateful to have homes to return to. it was a relief. very happy to be able to walk through the door. i think i was the first one home, so start flipping on lights start feeling a little sense of normalcy. oakland fire says crews will likely remain on scene for the rest of the day. the cause of this fire is still under investigation. the sun will be out and shining for a beautiful day in the bay area. here's meteorologist kari hall with our forecast as we take a look at today's high temperatures. it's going to be a

people in cuba are dealing with heavy wind and rain from hurricane oscar. millions of people have been without power since friday after cuba's electric grid collapsed, it's unclear when the power is expected to come back on, forecasters expect oscar to hit the bahamas tomorrow bringing intense rain and storm surge. the biden administration is proposing a rule that would provide women with over the counter birth control fully paid for by insurance. under the plan women with private insurance access could get birth control at no cost. it would expand the federal mandate requiring health insurers to cover those for free for people under the affordable care act. and for the first time ever, new york is home to the wnba championship team, the new york liberty beat the minnesota lynx last night to win the championship series, 3-2, star forward jonquel jones led the liberty scorers with 17 points and was chosen as the finals

mvp. jury selection is under way in to new york city trial of danielle penny. >> he was charged with manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide after he admitted to putting a homelessman in a chokehold in subway, neely was pronounced dead on that day. the incident divided the city coming amid a flurry of violent encounters on the subway. >> rehema ellis joins us. this was really a widely publicized case, especially here in new york, there were witnesses, video of the incident, walk us through what's happening in that courtroom today. >> the courtroom today the judge asked some 86 potential jurors, have you heard this case? nearly everyone raised their hand, because he said i'm not surprised but that doesn't mean that you couldn't judge the case fairly once you hear the evidence, however, most of them leading over 28 and they've got

controversy ahead of the election. giving away millions of dollars to voters in battleground states, a randomly selected registered voter $1 million from now until the election only if they sign a petition for his political action committee, now musk has endorsed former president donald trump, pennsylvania governor josh shapiro, talked about the giveaways on meet the press yesterday. >> i think there are real questions with how he's spending money in this race, how the dark money is flowing not just into pennsylvania but apparently now into the pockets of pennsylvanians, that's deeply concerning. >> nbc news justice and intelligence correspondent ken dilanian join us now, ken, you've been speaking with legal experts about musk's giveaways here, what are they saying. >> reporter: some believe this runs afoul of federal law,

federal law makes it illegal to pay people to register to vote, you have to be a registered pennsylvanian voter to be eligible for the drawing, and so while that's not a direct connection it's certainly an indirect one and some experts are saying, it may cross the line. not everyone agrees on that. we asked the justice department to comment, they've declined to comment. so, you know, look, election law's murky. certainly people are scrutinizing this practice. >> we're days away from the election, ken, have we heard anything from the justice department and how likely they do anything between now and the election period. >> reporter: we're in the quiet period, unlikely for the doj to say anything publicly about this. no comment on this story. if they do anything we may hear art it. there's also the possibility

you can still kind of see the haze, but this is coming only a couple of mint really after an israeli warning saying they were going to be launches missiles against various targets here, you can kind of still hear, we don't know whether that's another bombardment or an airplane breaking the sound barrier. we did hear israelis said they were planning on attacking another financial institution related to hezbollah. we don't know whether that was this was, it could have been just about anything because there are multiple targets here. air strikes almost continuously. but this was a particularly loud

>> that sheriff was able to get to safety. joining us now is guad venegas, talk us through the scope of the damage that you've seen. >> reporter: so the water's receded now, we're seeing the debris left behind, one of the rivers that runs through the downtown area, you can see the debris that was left behind, lot of vegetation, parts of trees, a car bumper in there, there's actually two cars inside the river, one is about 300 yards in that direction and a motorcycle, a bridge that was destroyed by the currents, what neighbors tell us the water from this river rose to 4, 5 feet right here in the street, that water made its way into some homes here, this vehicle was pushed on to the rail here, full of debris, mud inside, like many other vehicles that we've been

finding, we've been having conversations with neighbors about what it was like when the water came into their homes and what was the experience like trying to escape. >> by the time we got to the front door, the water was up here to the porch and we were literally swimming, the current washed us away. >> reporter: you can see this vehicle -- i want to show you the inside, this is the way a lot of the vehicles look today, just full of mud and debris, there's parking lot a few blocks ahead in that direction with about 30, 40 vehicles like this, it's a car dealership, we were told when the water came in it picked up those pickup trucks hitting each other eventually pushed into and returned to here as the water has receded. >> you hear about devastating

now with vitamin d for the dark days of winter. golden gate bridge back in court today. in april, 26 people blocked traffic on the bridge to protest u.s. support for israel's war in gaza. eight of those protesters are facing felonies, and today they're in front of a judge who will decide if there's enough evidence to go to trial. supporters rallied outside the courthouse this morning. an attorney representing some of them says the charges are disproportionate. people have used protest and civil disobedience as a way of

bringing about social change. these protesters are simply in that tradition. there's really no precedent for the types of charges that have been filed against them. a statement from the district attorney says the charges are based on facts from the investigation and the current law. a new chapter for the san francisco unified school district. city leaders rallied in front of the district's headquarters to support the new superintendent. it comes after a rocky few weeks for former superintendent matt wayne resigned on friday. wayne faced backlash following the release of a school closure list last month. now, the board has appointed maria sood to take over the role. she served as executive director of the department of children, youth and families. city leaders say they're confident sue can help address some of the district's issues, including the budget shortfall. we have confidence in faith in her leadership and i know working with the school board, she will do an amazing job to help provide clarity and

stability. last week, the school district also announced there would be no school closures for the next school year. initially, eight schools and two high schools were slated to shut down. it is going to warm up later this week. meteorologist kari hall has our 7-day forecast. we're looking at more upper 70s some nice weather for the inland valleys over the next few days, and the wind will be calmer, so we are still watching out for a fire danger, but it won't be as high as it was toward the end of last week. and then our high temperatures continue to warm toward the end of the week into the weekend, with low 80s expected for some of our warmer valleys and then looking at san francisco and near the coast, upper 60s, and then a touch warmer by friday, with a high of about 74 degrees. the weekend is looking nice, but we will see the return of low clouds and fog and our overnight lows will start out in the mid 50s. in the near term we are continuing with some very seasonable weather across the bay area, and we'll watch out
