140 law enforcement officers were attacked. some were killed. this is a serious matter. >> reporter: we asked about the issue of abortion access if republicans were to win control of congress. is a question of pragmatism, then, what concessions would be on the table, religious exemptions, for example? is that something that you would consider? >> i don't think we should be making concessions when we're talking about a fundamental freedom to make decisions about your own body. >> and hallie, kamala harris is going to make her case this week. she's actually going to a deeply red state with a very strict abortion law. what's the thinking, going to texas? >> because of the law that you reference, savannah, how restrictive it is, her campaign sees reproductive rights as a huge mobilizing issue that could persuade those late deciders to break her way. you make the point, texas is red. it is also home to a key senate race democrats hope to flip blue, but republicans hope to hang on to, savannah. >> hallie, thank you very much. meanwhile, as for former president trump, he campaigned in battleground north carolina overnight, launching new attacks on his rival, also picking up

support from a former democratic presidential nominee, but trump's long-serving chief of staff, speaking out this morning about what he sees as the dangers of a second trump term. nbc's garrett haake covers the trump campaign, joins us now from north carolina. garrett, good morning. >> reporter: hey, craig, good morning to you. for the first time, we're hearing john kelly in his own woerds in an interview to "the new york times" sound the alarm about donald trump's fitness for office. the former marine general, whose own son died in afghanistan, says he's not endorsing any candidate. but he does believe that donald trump would try to govern as a dictator, if given another chance. with former president trump campaigning in battleground north carolina overnight, his longest-serving chief of staff, john kelly, delivering a dire warning about a possible second trump presidency in a series of interviews with "the new york times." when asked whether he thinks mr. trump is a fascist?

>> he's certainly an authoritarian, admires people who are dictators. he has said that. so, he certainly falls into the general definition of a fascist, for sure. >> reporter: kelly says he was motivated to speak out following mr. trump's comments about using the military against domestic political opponents, who the former president calls the enemy within. >> even to say it for political purposes to get elected is a very, very bad thing, let alone actually doing it. >> reporter: kelly also discussing trump's relationship with veterans, confirming that trump has called those who died on the battlefield "losers and suckers" and saying the former president did not want to be seen with amputees. >> his not wanting to be seen with amputees, amputees that lost their limbs in defense of this country, that's an interesting perspective for the commander in chief to have. >> reporter: kelly also confirms reports that mr. trump repeatedly spoke highly of adolf hitler. >> more than once said, you know, hitler did some good

things too. >> reporter: in a statement, the trump campaign saying "kelly has totally beclowned himself with those reports. according to a recent study from "the atlantic," mr. trump made other comments about hitler during a conversation in the wlous, according to two people who heard him saying, quote, i need the kind of generals that hitler had. people who were totally loyal to him that follow orders." the trump campaign says the former president never said it. while trump was back on the offensive overnight on the trail after condemning harris for not holding events yesterday while she conducted interviews. >> she's lazy as hell. >> reporter: later in north carolina, launching a barrage of attacks, suggesting without evidence that vice president harris abuses alcohol and drugs. >> does she drink? is she on drugs? i don't know. >> meanwhile, garrett, in his latest attempt to try to boost

his standing with young male voters in particular, we're hearing to appear on one of the biggest podcasts in media. what can you tell us about that? >> reporter: that's right, craig. the trump campaign has made podcasts and streaming programs popular with young men a core part of their messaging strategy. there's no podcast more popular with young men than the joe rogan experience. trump will sit down with rogan friday in austin for a long-awaited interview. the goal here for trump is to take young men who might feel favorably towards trump and make them into actual trump voters. rogan is the icing on the cake here, the last big podcast of that kind that they have not gotten trump on so far. >> garrett haake in battleground north carolina. garrett, thank you. meanwhile, former trump attorney and new york mayor rudy giuliani has been ordered by a federal judge to turn over most of his valuable possessions, including his manhattan apartment, to two georgia election workers. this is all part of a nearly

$150 million civil judgment against him for defaming them after the 2020 election. nbc's stephanie gosk is here with the details on it. stephanie, good morning. >> savannah, good morning. giuliani has been given seven days to turn over some of his most val most valuable possessions. he has not paid any part of that massive civil judgment for defaming georgia election workers ruby freeman and her daughter, shaye moss. now, the items include his manhattan apartment, more than 25 watches, a vintage mercedes-benz from 1980, and signed yankees memorabilia, including something signed by joe dimaggio himself. all of that is a fraction of the nearly $150 million he owes. all of this happening because ten months ago, giuliani was ordered to pay that judgment by a jury for defaming freeman and moss after falsely claiming they committed election fraud in georgia. it was all part of a larger effort together with former president trump to overturn the 2020 election results in that state. as a result, the mother and

daughter say his attacks led to death threats against them and their families. they even had to go into hiding after a period of time. now, their attorney says this should send a powerful message that there is a price to pay for those who choose to intentionally spread disinformation and in a statement this morning, giuliani's lawyer saying, "stay tuned" and vowing the judgment will be reversed on appeal, savannah. >> you mention all those items, but there are actually additional items, aren't there, steph, that could be part of this? >> yeah, a few crucial ones for you baseball fans out there. giuliani has three world series rings from the yankees, but his son says that those were a gift from his father, so judge needs to decide that, and then there's also giuliani's palm beach condo, but that's part of a separate hearing scheduled for next monday, savannah. >> all right, stephanie, thank you very much. now to the middle east and israel announcing yesterday that it has killed the hezbollah official poised to become the militant group's next leader. israeli military officials say that hashem safieddine was

killed about three weeks ago in an air strike that hit hezbollah's intelligence headquarters outside beirut. safieddine was expected to succeed his cousin, who was killed last month in a large-scale israeli attack. hezbollah has so far not confirmed his death. another major story this morning, the weather. much of the one has been enjoying unusually warm weather for this time of year, setting record highs in some places. parts of the east coast, though, also experiencing a historic dry streak. no measurable rain so far this month in cities like philadelphia, atlanta, here in new york too. dylan's got the forecast, but first nbc's emilie ikeda in woodland, new jersey. emil-i-e, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, savannah. not only is it unusually warm but this region hasn't seen rainfall for weeks, leading to threes kinds of bone-dry conditions. some firefighters tell me they have never seen the pinelands this dry before. you can see the fallen debris, the fallen leaves. these pine needles, all volatile

fuel for fire. it's supposed to be fall with cool, crisp weather, but this october has seen record-setting heat across the northeast. >> i like it a little cooler, but i'll take it. >> reporter: with temperatures nearly 20 degrees higher than normal in philadelphia. >> we're trying to take advantage of it before it gets cold. >> reporter: many cities along the east coast have approached or hit historic highs in the upper 70s and 80s, and the warm streak continues today. at the same time, drought conditions are expanding in nearly every state. some in the tristate area are calling this month dry-tober. cities like new york and philadelphia could see their first october on record with zero rainfall. the unusually warm temperatures and dry conditions creating new challenges in connecticut where the berlin wildfire has burned upwards of 90 acres so far along lamentation mountain. >> you can smell it, and you can see it. >> reporter: an added challenge, dry brush like leaves on the

ground, refueling the fires. >> we're getting a lot more ground fire than we normally do because it's been so dry. so, right now, we have a full ban on any burning whatsoever. >> reporter: according to the environmental protection agency, climate change has led to an increase in the size and frequency of wildfires, as well as the length of the season, something the new jersey forest fire service says it's witnessed. >> fire seasons are not seasonal anymore, and they've actually become year-round. >> reporter: and there are more than 100 wildfires in new jersey last week alone. you can still smell the smoke in the air, and fire officials reminding us that the vast majority of wildfires in the u.s., some reports suggesting up to 90%, are caused by people and many of them, savannah, are preventible. >> all right, emilie, thank you so much. brings us to dylan. that's a hot map. >> it is a hot map. a lot of folks like that the summertime temperatures are extending through the end of

october here, but it does cause some issues when we haven't had an ounce of rain. temperatures running to 10 to 20 degrees above average. 85% of the lower 48 have been seeing temperatures well above average. as we go through the rest of this week, all the way through saturday, there are record high temperatures all throughout the southwest, down through texas and oklahoma, down through the gulf coast, up into nashville too, where we could see record-breaking high temperatures. we've got this dip in the jet stream, but not much of a dip. it's not extending far enough south to wipe out some of these above average high temperatures. so it is going to stay pretty mild as long as this stays in effect. memphis, 86 degrees today, lexington, kentucky, 78. philly, 78 degrees after breaking a high temperature yesterday. and then, as we go into tomorrow, minneapolis, still about 11 degrees above average with highs in the mid-60s. oklahoma city, 90 degrees for a high temperature. it's been about four years since we've had a red flag warning issued for connecticut. we have not only the dry conditions, but we have the heat and breezy conditions too. we could see gusty winds, so if

a fire does develop, it could spread very rapidly, and that's the biggest concern when we have these red flag warnings in effect. as for the drought monitor going forward, through january, it's going to continue back through the central and northern plains, down south, the drought will likely expand. out in the pacific northwest, though, and for the great lakes and parts of the northeast, we could see some improvements as we get into a wetter pattern eventually. that's a look at the weather across the country. we'll get to your local forecast in the next 30 seconds.

stories. fellow san jose city council members have stripped omar torres of his committee assignments. torres did not attend last night's council meeting. his second straight no show since word dropped of allegations he may have committed sexual misconduct with a minor. torres maintains his innocence. the city charter allows for council members to be removed only after five straight unexcused absences. the only other way is through a recall election, which would be up to voters. i'm ginger conejero saab in orinda, where the fire district is stepping in to help homeowners in the area get their home insurance policies renewed. they're considering enforcing a new ember resistant zone, which would require homeowners to get rid of all flammable materials within five feet of their homes. the proposed ordinance comes as the state faces a looming insurance crisis. earlier this year, state farm announced it would not renew tens of thousands of residential policies. the next district

but first, nbc's maggie vespa joins us from mcdonald's headquarters in chicago. maggie, good morning. >> reporter: hey, craig, good morning. an absolute crisis for the iconic golden arches, the cdc confirming nearly 50 people have been sickened by this outbreak, and one person has lost their life. and this morning mcdonald's is racing to contain the damage. this morning, an american fast food icon fielding a deadly crisis. >> if you're eating fast food, be careful out there. >> reporter: the cdc confirming a fast-moving outbreak of e. coli tied to restaurant giant mcdonald's, adding among the nearly 50 customers sickened, 10 have been hospitalized, in ten states, including a child, who now developed kidney disease. the cdc adding an older person in colorado has died. in most of the cases, customers report eating the quarter poupder, a widely advertised staple. >> the hottest, juice yes, sir quarter pounder yet. >> reporter: headlines spreading

like wildfire on social media. >> do not eat mcdonald's again until you see this -- >> reporter: within hours, mcdonald's usa president joe earlinger saying in part -- >> because food safety is so important to me an everyone at mcdonald. >> reporter: the company in a written statement adding, while the exact source of the outbreak remains under investigation, it may be linked to slired onions used in the quarter pounder and sourced by a single supplier that serves three distribution centers. promising swift and decisive action, mcdonald's says it's removed the slivered onions and temporarily the quarter pounder itself from restaurants in the impacted area and other states. former fda commissioner scott gottlieb points out the chain's practice is to cook patties at 170 degrees, 10 degrees hotter than it takes to kill e. coli, adding the company gets them from multiple beef suppliers, likely scenario. how big of a crisis is this for mcdonald's? >> significant.

potentially significant. >> reporter: food industry writer jonathan maze credits mcdonald's swift action. but notes impacts may be long lasting. >> there's going to be a lot of publicity about this. people are going to stop going to mcdonald's. >> reporter: so, it's worth noting the cdc says these illnesses were reported between september 27th and october 11th, but the agency notes it's very possible more people have gotten sick since then, adding it can take up to four weeks to link individual cases to an ongoing outbreak. so, that in mind, they recommend, if you experience symptoms of e. coli, which can include diarrhea, vomiting, and a fever above 102, contact your local health care provider. craig? >> all right, maggie vespa for us in chicago, thank you. we are joined now by joe erlinger, the president of mcdonald's usa. mr. erlinger, good morning to you. thanks for your time. joe, for folks who might be watching or listening right now, they're thinking about going to

mcdonald's today, perhaps, how confident are you in telling them that they won't get sick? >> hi, craig. thanks so much for having me back. we are very confident that you can go to mcdonald's and enjoy our classics. we took swift action yesterday to remove the quarter pounder from our menu. this was swift and decisive action by us, and you know, it is the quarter pounder and two ingredients on that quarter pounder that are under investigation by the cdc, so you know, i want to say to our consumers that you can confidently go to mcdonald's today. >> and you mentioned the two ingredients that are under investigation right now. it sounds like it may be these slivered onions that you guys use on the quarter pounder. if onions are the culprit, joe, do we know whether those onions are used exclusively at mcdonald's, or is there a chance those onions could be at other restaurants, maybe even grocery stores? >> like i said, we're going to

those other products might have gone from this work closely with the cdc and work closely with our supplier. i don't want to speculate where those other products might have gone from this individual supplier. but again, what we've done at mcdonald's is taken this swift and decisive action to address the issue that we have so that the public can be confident in mcdonald's. >> presumably, a company like mcdonald's has fairly robust quality controls that are in place throughout the supply chain system there. joe, in the simplest of terms, how did something like this happen? >> i mean, food safety is, you know, our top priority at mcdonald's, the top priority in this building where i am at the mcdonald's headquarters, it's the top priority in our nearly 14,000 mcdonald's restaurants across the u.s., and it's the top priority for our suppliers as well. this is something that we talk about as being everyone's

business, and so while the investigation continues, and we'll get in, you know, continue to get into the details of those investigations, i don't think that's what's important. what's important today is that we've taken the action to protect the american public and promote public health. >> 49 sick so far, one dead across ten states. do we expect those numbers to rise? >> we'll rely on the cdc obviously to do their investigations and to do their tracing. it is important to note that the onset dates for this disease are between, at this point, september 27th and october 11th. if there has been contaminated product within our supply chain, it's very likely worked itself through that supply chain already, but certainly, we'll be working with the cdc and cooperating with them on the investigation and we'll take in more data and let the science continue to lead our actions. >> really quickly, joe, prices up, of course, i believe, somewhere roughly around 40%

"jesus christ superstar" was our north star. but we wanted to write these songs adapted from this movie that is one of my favorite movies of all time and really paint the picture in your head with these 26 songs. >> the songs kind of tell the story. tell us, eisa, what is the story of "warriors," if you haven't seen the movie? >> it's a story of this gang that go up to the bronx to go to a peace summit that will create a truce of all the gangs in the city, and then the gang leader who calls the truce is

we're back, 8:14, our special pink power series continues. earlier this year, actress olivia munn revealed she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer, and she's using her platform now to raise awareness about early detection. we're going to talk live to olivia in just a moment. but first a look at her journey. last april, actress olivia munn received a life-changing diagnosis. despite a clear mammogram and testing negative for the gene, munn's doctor calculated her risk for developing cancer and her score came back high at 37%, which eventually led to a biopsy. >> so, i get the biopsy, and find out three days later that it is cancer. and it's an aggressive cancer, and so it's fast-moving and aggressive. >> do it for him, do it for your baby. this stuff doesn't matter. >> munn's intensive treatment plan involved four surgeries in ten months, including a double

mastectomy. >> i'm ready. >> reporter: earlier this year, the 44-year-old also opened up about freezing her eggs before undergoing a fifth surgery. telling "vogue," "i took out my uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries." by her side through it all, her husband, comedian john mulaney, and their little boy, malcolm. amid munn's difficult battle with cancer, the couple never gave up hope on trying to grow their family, and the two shared a sweet surprise on instagram just last month, announcing the arrival of their daughter, may june mulaney, born via a surrogate. >> she is the squeakiest baby. >> the now mother of two sharing all the precious moments with her first month with may as she continues her own journey of healing. >> i want to say to everyone who has sent me a message or stops me on the street, it means so much to me, so thank you, thank you, thank you. >> we're so happy to have to olivia with us now from los

angeles. hi, olivia, good morning. >> hi, good morning. >> what a whirlwind to have such joy of your toddler and your new baby and yet to have gone through so much with your breast cancer journey. first of all, how are you doing? how are you feeling today? >> i'm doing great. i am in the middle of mixing my medication around a little bit because, you know, anybody who's going through this understands the treatment is -- can be taxing at times, so i'm trying to find the right medication, but i'm, you know, got my hands full with a newborn and a toddler, so a lot of my energy is going towards them, and it's distracting a lot of the other side effects of my medication. so, i'm doing pretty good. >> this is a month where we really focus in on breast cancer stories, and yours is unique in the sense that you had a clear mammogram, and you were doing all the tests, and it was your doctor who said, let's do this breast cancer screening questionnaire, essentially. you come back with such a high

average for that that they do a bunch of follow-up testing and find this aggressive cancer. what is your message to people who might be watching right now and thinking, oh, it's another breast cancer story, i do all my tests and screenings? >> i would say that, first, you have to know your risk assessment score. it's a simple online free test, and once you get that score, you can take it to your doctor. anything above 20% is considered high-risk. mine was 37.3%, so very high. and when you go to your doctor, they say, like, advocate for yourself. everyone's saying, advocate for yourself, but what does that really mean? what i have learned is it means you've got to go to your doctor, and you inundate them with information, and you don't stop until they give you the test that you need. don't let them send you off. don't let them tell you that it's nothing to worry about. you have to keep fighting for yourself, and don't leave the doctor's office until they give you the test you need. just keep pushing. >> you have had five surgeries. i mean, as you said, you're

still kind of struggling with finding the right medications so that you can stay healthy, and then at the same time, you've got a toddler, malcolm is about to turn 3, and you've got this new baby. tell me about that part of the journey, and kind of juggling these two conflicting moments in your life. >> you know, there is a lot of guilt that i had and still have from being sick for so long and being bed-ridden with so many surgeries. i thought that when i got through the big chunk of surgeries, like the four surgeries in the beginning, that i would be able to get back on my feet, but then, there came the first wave of medication, and that just knocked me down, and it was debilitating, and i found that just -- i was just tired and not around that much, and i couldn't hold him as much, and i couldn't go to the playground as much, and it was really exhausting, and there's just a lot of guilt, but i work with my oncologist a lot to try to figure out what i can do.

but you know, we're just such a, like, little family. we're really tight, and we have a lot of fun, and we laugh all the time, and john is just the most amazing husband and father, and so we figure out a way to make it all work, despite how tired i can be at times. >> that's so hard. and by the way, right, welcome to motherhood. so many moms feel that guilt. mom to mom, i'll just tell you, you're doing great. you're there. that's the most important thing. you're mere presence. >> thank you. >> you fought so hard for this. >> thank you so much. >> for this second baby too, little may june, who's just a sweetheart. and you -- you know, you had this major surgery where you took out your ovaries and fallopian tubes and uterus. you had your egg retrieval and that's its own emotional journey. >> yeah, you know, when i found of the that we had breast cancer, i had breast cancer, that was really scary for me because we had actually -- were

planning on trying to have another baby. so, at that point, i said, i need to freeze more eggs. i had already frozen my eggs twice in my 30s, but i just didn't know if any of them were good because we didn't turn them into embryos yet, so i said to john, i need to freeze more eggs or get more eggs out, and that's going to put me at risk because i have to put more hormones in my body, and that's what feeds my cancer. so, i need you to be supportive of this, and you know, it's scary, but he said, of course, like, you know, whatever you want to do, i'll support you. so, we went down the journey of getting out more eggs and i really wanted a little girl, and you know, i really felt that i needed two embryos, and two female embryos, and our doctor said, you know, i'm going to get one more you. it's too much of a risk. and we'll do one retrieval and try to get one girl and call it quits after that, and i remember saying to john, when we got to a place where our embryos were

getting tested, we had two embryos getting tested, and i said, our odds of getting at least one to be a girl and healthy is really slim. i said, i need you to support me because i want to go back and do it again if we don't get two. i really want two. and he said, whatever you want to do, i support you. we got home that day, and we got a call from my fertility doctor, dr. wong, and he said, we got the results back, and it's the dream. he said, it's two healthy baby girl embryos, and john and i just burst into tears, and we couldn't believe how lucky we've been after a series of a lot of unlucky moments in our life recently. then, that's -- one of those little embryos is little baby may. she wouldn't be here if we didn't go through all of that. >> there she is. i know you've written how grateful you are to your surrogate who made this possible. i want -- you have a new campaign, and it's for skims, but it's also -- you're a paid spokesperson for skims, but it donates a portion to the komen breast cancer foundation. they're beautiful images, and i

want you to talk about this one in particular because we can see your mastectomy scar. not in the one we're showing there, but it's a beautiful picture. let's start with that lead, that's it. what did it mean to you to show this part of yourself to the world? what were you hoping to send a message about? >> you know, when skims approached me to do this campaign, it was just to do their shapewear and new leggings, and it wasn't about my scar at all. but we were in the middle of the shoot, and we were changing an outfit that could see more of my scars, and so the make-up artist was touching up my scars, and then we got to the double mastectomy scars, and they were just really hard to cover up. and then i was looking in the mirror, and i just thought, i'm done being insecure about my scars. and so, i went to the team of skims, and i said, what do you guys think about showing my scars in this campaign? they were so amazing and

thoughtful and wonderful, and we talked it out, and then we decided to do it, and that's the result of it. and it was really -- it was scary, but i feel like this is something i've been hiding for a long time now, and it just feels like -- like i can, you know, breathe a little bit more. and also, like, knowing that there's so many women who have these same scars as me and i know that so many of them feel the same way i felt about them for so long, and i hope that they see this skims campaign, and skims is, you know, so iconic and associated with beauty and sex appeal and, you know, cancer really doesn't have that same connotation, so i just really hope that other women who have gone through my same path feel a little better after seeing it. >> it's a beautiful picture and a lot more. olivia, thank you. we're so glad you're doing well. hug those babies for us. >> thanks. >> and take care. thank you. >> thank you so much.
