abused his students, the post drew millions of views on social media last week. making fabricated allegations of the abuse. they say this part of a vast russia's disinformation campaign to help donald trump. they say china and iran have been interfering and iran wants trump to lose. >> can all of that said, what should we be on alert for after the election and what are your intelligence sources? >> another alarming part of this. this new assessment said that russia, china, iran will seek to exploit america's vulnerabilities in that period. they may seek to stoke violence and promote bogus claims of fraud.

died. joining us now is maura barrett. maura, good to see you. what do we know right now about exactly what caused this outbreak, the numbers of those infected expected to rise at this point. >> reporter: everyone from the cdc to the usda to the fda are investigating where this could have come from. they point to the quarter pounder beef patty and slivered onions that go on that quarter pounder. the time line around how long this has gone on, the numbers right now are about two-week range from september 27th to october 11th. and so there's some wiggle room in there. our team spoke with the outbreak prevention department with the cdc who outlined how that might play out. >> we fully expect to have more

illnesses reported. that at this point is going to be driven by people who have eaten a quarter pounder before mcdonald's took those actions. >> reporter: so, by taking those actions the mcdonald's did remove the quarter pounder from the affected stores of these outbreaks are tied back to, that equals about one-fifth of all total mcdonald's stores across the country. >> how else is mcdonald's responding at this point. ? >> reporter: the quarter pounder in this area of affected could equal 1 million affected. they're adamant they took proactive action removing them from the menu, they wrote in a statement saying they're taking swift and decisive action.

they also factored in the idea that the onions impacted might be on other products on the breakfast menu specifically but they're tying it back to supplier, the supplier doesn't hit those areas with breakfast items. they feel confident removing the quarter pounder from the menu will be all set. former hollywood mogul harvey weinstein appeared in court today in new york, this was his first court appearance since his cancer diagnosis was made public just days ago, nbc news correspondent rehema ellis has been following the latest for us in court. what was the purpose of today's hearing and what's happened so far? >> reporter: this hearing was because the defense attorney for harvey weinstein went to court asking that two cases against him, separate cases, not be combined, what happened was, the

judge had decided that he wanted to take up this case because the prosecutor's office, when the 2020 conviction for rape against harvey weinstein was overturned earlier this year the prosecution said it was not going to go away with that, they were going to re-try him. they wanted to put the two cases together, saying it would be a duplication and cost the city and county too much money to try these cases separately. his defense objected. today before the court, the judge agreed. these cases can be combined and it will be combined and he'll stand trial on both cases at the same time. kate. >> okay, that's a victory for the prosecution there. rehema, this case, this hearing, this case in new york, is here, but it's also important to note that he was also convict of

similar crimes in los angeles, what's the latest with that case and could this progress happening here in new york impact the california case? >> hard to say whether or not this case will impact california but california impacted this case when the first case against harvey weinstein here was overturned he didn't get a get out of jail card, because he's been convicted in california as well, that case is also under appeal right now, so he's got cases on two coasts here in new york and also in california that he's dealing with, we don't know the outcome of any of them at this moment. but, again the case in california is under appeal and we don't know what happened in new york will impact what's happening in california. >> rehema, appreciate it. coming up, why former new york city mayor and former trump lawyer rudy giuliani is being told to turn over some of his most prized possessions

courtroom today. prosecutors are trying to discredit key testimony from a key witness in the murder trial of nima momeni. he's accused of killing cashapp founder bob lee. nbc bay area's ginger conejero saab joins us from the courthouse. the witness at the center of this is still kawsar momeni. she is the sister of nima momeni, the man who is on trial for the murder of bob lee. this is the fourth day that she is on the witness stand. she arrived this morning with her mother at the courthouse, which has been pretty typical of the past almost a week now. she has been subpoenaed as a witness for the prosecution and continues her testimony on redirect this

morning. what is different today is the tone of her testimony, which has been combative even hostile at times between herself and prosecutors. now, there have been a long list of objections, a number of sidebar conversations between defense attorneys, prosecutors and the judge. and not too long ago, the court recessed for a brief break. the emotions at that point very tense with bob lee's family and his ex-wife leaving the courtroom distraught by the testimony of miss momeni. now that testimony specifically focuses on text messages that were sent after the death of bob lee. miss maney has characterized texts from bob lee's family as intimidating and threatening. bob lee's family, completely disagreeing with that and upset with that characterization. we anticipate that this redirect will continue through the day and a possible recross examination from defense attorneys for miss momeni in san francisco, ginger conejero saab

nbc bay area news. thanks for the update, ginger. we are learning a small brush fire in the santa cruz mountains is now out. it started this morning on matilija drive in los gatos near highway nine. this is time lapse video showing how close it was burning to some nearby homes. santa clara county fire says the fire burned about an acre. no reports of injuries and no homes damaged. it's not clear yet how this fire started. sunshine across most of the bay area today. here's meteorologist kari hall with our forecast. our wednesday afternoon temperatures are looking nice and comfortable for much of the bay area, but a little bit warmer than what's normal for the end of october. we're headed for upper 70s and low 80s for the inland east bay, as well as the north bay, while san francisco will be in the low 70s with lots of sunshine. we'll set it on repeat tomorrow with a cold morning and some of our temperatures in the south bay in the mid 70s. upper 70s for dublin and livermore, and 78 degrees in santa rosa. friday

we're also going to be a little bit warmer with highs in the low to mid 80s in the south county, but mostly upper 70s elsewhere. we will see changes ahead in our seven-day forecast. we'll take a look coming up in about 30 minutes. a lovely week. thank you kerry. there could be a way to limit the risk of wildfires. that's what leaders in orinda and moraga are saying right now. the fire district wants to create what it calls a new ember resistant zone. homeowners would have to clear all flammable vegetation within five feet of their home. the hope to reduce the chance of wildfires from spreading. the mayor of orinda, darlene gia, says enforcing an ordinance like this might get some backlash, but there is data that suggests this plan works and it is very well researched. so it is based on actual science. it's not a it's not a theory, but it is also one that's going to be a very, very tough thing for people to accept if it's decided to be the best

in the region but called it a quote serious issue if the plan is for those soldiers to support the kremlin's war in ukraine. today south korean lawmakers claimed that north korea has sent 3,000 troops to russia so far. and on tuesday ukraine's president claimed as many as 12,000 north korean troops were being trained for deployment. a federal judge has ordered former donald trump attorney and mayor of new york city rude giuliani to turn valuable possessions to georgia election workers. seven days to transfer the assets, his manhattan apartment, 27 luxury watches, his vintage mercedes-benz. it's all part of a nearly $150 million civil judgment for defaming the workers after the 2020 election. giuliani's lawyer released a statement arguing that the judgment will be reversed after appeal. former los angeles dodger pitcher fernando valenzuela has

died at the age of 63. he won a national league cy young award and rookie of the year in 1981. the iconic pitcher's death comes just days before his beloved dodgers play the yankees in the world series. many voters are telling nbc news that one of top issues driving them to the polls this election season is the cost of living. >> more specifically, the price of buying or renting a home. shelter has been hit hard by inflation. the data from nbc news home-buying index, it measures the relatively difficult of buying a home by comparing counties nationwide. for some key counties in battleground states buying a home is getting slightly easier. let's bring in christine romans.

the big picture here on the housing market, overall, what are the main challenges right now? >> reporter: the big picture b here, 30-year fixed rated mortgage, to buy a home, 6.44%. it's improving. our home-buying index shows difficult conditions overall, you can see that number relatively high and the median home price here, record highs up 4% in the past year, up 30% over the past four years, so housing is expensive. it's really at the center of both candidates here and what they're saying they're going to do to make it better. vice president harris said she would help build 3 million homes over the next four years. 25,000 downpayment for home buying. donald trump said he would ban

undocumented immigrants from buying. that's very small number. two platforms here to deal with difficult housing. >> christine, can we zero in on a key political counties in battleground states? the data there and what home buyers are experiencing. >> cobb county, georgia, went for clinton and enmore for biden. things are getting better. suburbs of atlanta. the expanded down payment system for teachers -- firefighters, military members and nurses, that's been something that's really worked there overall, that's cobb county. brown county, wisconsin, green bay, you can see this is solidly trump company things are getting worse there, lot of demand from

25-times larger than any previous d.o.t. penalty for violating disabled-related regulations that the d.o.t. has, bottom line, american airlines is accused by the d.o.t. of being amid the worst offenders of how they treat disabled customers and their wheelchairs. thousands of wheelchairs according to the d.o.t. damaged by american airlines. imagine what that means for a customer who can't get to where he or she is going. wheelchairs cost thousands of dollars and then you're struggling to try to replace it and you can't get to your destination. bottom line from the d.o.t. secretary buttigieg. he said that we at d.o.t. are essentially moving forward with a new plan here, he said tolerating -- the era of tolerating poor treatment of airline passengers with disabilities is over, with this penalty he says we're setting the standard of accountability for airlines that violate the

civil rights of passengers with disabilities. here's how the $50 million fine breaks down. 25 million will go to the treasury. 25 goes to passenger compensation, equipment upgrades. >> has american said anything else about this whole fine. >> reporter: they're paying the fine and they settled. here's their statement, american has a long-standing commitment to serving passengers with disabilities. as you know, kate, we've seen these videos go viral of wheelchairs being thrown around, down on the runway, tarmac, getting broken, a lot of this is going to come down to training their personnel to do better. >> tom, thank you. as we close in on election day, there's one number you'll

hear over and over again. 270, the number of electoral votes a candidate needs to reach in order to win the presidency, where does that number come from and why doesn't the candidate who gets the most votes win, here's the electoral college simply explained. >> it's the most unusual college in the country. >> reporter: the electoral college is almost as old as the country itself. constitutionally challenged more than 800 times. >> the electoral college is -- >> you need the electoral college which is much tougher than the popular vote. >> reporter: the electoral college is a system where americans don't vote directly for a presidential candidate. each state gets a number of electors, they choose their state's winning candidate. in 48 states and d.c. the candidate winning the state's popular vote gets all of the states electoral votes.

trump campaign look at these red states, north dakota, south dakota, wyoming, idaho, they think they've got those states safely in hand, democrats agree. democrats look at illinois, new york state, new jersey, california, places like that, they think they've got those safely in hand and republicans agree. not a ton of money at least in the presidential race in those states. it gets concentrated in these swing states, in terms of outside influence because the voters in those states have a ton of influence. one thing to keep in mind is, this is sort of battleground territory, it does change over time. it can change pretty dramatically and pretty quickly. not long ago a state like georgia wouldn't have been among them. state like arizona wouldn't be

hartstein. it moves you because it's all so real and talk about the conversation and especially what were they communicating that's hitting us so hard here. >> there's something beautiful in this interaction. there's a connection. right, he's in it. he's present for andrew garfield in a way we want people to be present for us in moments of loss and grief. >> it's so powerful. with kids it may manifest differently than parents expect. what should they be lookingfor when it comes to grief. >> it's a really important question, we think of grief as this linear thing, it's process, for kids, you might see they're playing and seem fine and then all of a sudden they're not okay. or they're regressing in their behaviors or more anxious. they'll stay connected to you.

>> what about when adults, adults are grieving and you have kids, you know, you're tempted to sort of hide in the shower and cry, you need to share your grief with them to some extent? >> your kids are perceptive and they're much more resilient than we give them credit for. we want to be honest and direct and have that conversation and by sharing your emotion. you don't want to give them your emotion. but sharing your emotion is okay to have emotions. you want to know when to tap out. when it feels too much for you need to ask for help and someone else can come in and care for your children at that time. >> andrew garfield said, i'm kind of sad today. it's okay for kids to see we have that range of emotion and

where they're learning, how to express it, experience it, that's okay. if we normalize the emotion that's no big when they have it. >> are there signs, you said more help with parenting, what if your child is really struggling, what if the child lost a parent, god forbid, when do you need to get outside help? >> this is process, we're going to come and go on how the emotion hits. getting back into those routines they need or getting back to school, they're not sleeping, go get some advice, talk to a therapist, meet with your pediatrician. it's a great thing and there's hot of grief loss groups for kids. >> it's important to remember grief can be around a lot of

for sale on car lots. two. east coast hurricanes milton and helene, basically back to back. just flooded a bunch of cars and we just got some eye opening data about them. carfax. the vehicle history company, estimates that an astounding 138,000 cars flooded during hurricane helene. hurricane milton will drive that number

even higher. here's the problem shady used car traders will reliably polish up some of those flooded cars and try to offload them out of state. in places like sunny california, carfax says. you do not want to buy a car that was in a flood. even a little bit of water damage can lead to electrical issues. it's really a ticking time bomb, and then fixing those electrical issues will be very costly as well. on top of that, m warns that flooded cars are prone to mold. that's a whole other headache. carfax suggests extra scrutiny if you're buying a used car right now, especially if the vehicle history shows that car recently shipped west from the southeast. ideally, hire an independent mechanic to inspect the car. we made a video showing you the telltale signs of a flooded car and how to spot them like foggy headlights and brake lights. you can watch that video on our website, our streaming channels, and our youtube page. just look for the how to
