strike is extended. five weeks after first walking off the job, 32,000 boeing machinists rejected the company's proposed contract by a vote of nearly two-thirds. that proposal would have seen wage increase 35% over four years. the union wants a 40% increase. this setback comes as boeing reported a $6 billion quarterly loss, the biggest since 2020. ceo kelly ortburg said reaching a deal is a priority to get the company back on track. there are only a dozen days left until the presidential election. today vice president harris will hold a rally in atlanta, with barack obama and bruce springsteen. former president trump rallies in arizona. overnight, harris spoke at a cnn town hall, where she said she does think that donald trump is a fascist. she was responding to comments made to the "new york times" by retired four-star general john kelly. but, at an event last night, mr.

>> reporter: the atlantic reports that two unnamed sources say they heard then-president trump say i need the kind of generals that hitler had, people who are totally loyal to him that follow orders. nbc news has not independently confirmed that reporting, and the trump campaign says trump never made those comments. kelly says he's speaking out now because trump recently suggested using the military against political opponents who he called the enemy within if there's election day chaos. kelly became a fierce trump critic after leaving the white house, and the trump campaign responded, quote, john kelly has totally beclowned himself with these debunked stories he is fabricating. trump posting that kelly is a quote degenerate who made up a story out of pure trump derangement syndrome hatred, adding he was tough and dumb. >> our thanks to peter alexander for that report. mr. trump is also facing bash lash over comments he reportedly made over a murdered army private.

the atlantic magazine reported that when mr. trump was president he complained about the cost of paying for vanessa guillen's funeral. but according to two sources who spoke to the atlantic, when the bill came, mr. trump was furious. making a racist, profane comment and telling his chief of staff mark meadows not to pay for it. nbc news has not confirmed the atlantic's reporting. meadows and the trump campaign denied these comments were ever made. guillen's sister came to the former president's defense, saying he showed nothing but respect to her family and that she has voted for trump. a suspect appeared in court wednesday charged with terrorism for allegedly shooting at a dnc office in tempe, arizona. jeffrey michael kelly shot up the office three separate times over the last two months, once with a bb gun and twice with a firearm. when he was arrested, kelly had

several guns in his car, including a machine gun. authorities say he was planning a mass casualty event. also in tempe, a 24-year-old man was arrested, suspected of making online threats against donald trump jr. who has been campaigning in arizona. the u.s. has confirmed north korea has sent troops to russia in what could mark a major escalation of russia's war in ukraine. while it's not entirely known what the troops are doing or why they are there, the involvement of north korean troops would solidify a growing alliance between kim jong un and vladimir putin. both signed a pact in june that included a pledge of mutual defense. the u.s. defense secretary calling it a serious issue. let's go to matt bodner live in london. good morning, matt. >> reporter: frances, good morning. secretary austin confirmed yesterday that they have their own information about the troops in russia as it may force

western allies to take this a little bit more seriously. north korean estimates show that 30,000 north korean troops are in russia and 10,000 total may have been promised to the kremlin to reenforce positions against ukraine. they say these forces were transported to russia on vessels from russia's pacific fleet. that is based in vladivostok on the eastern coast. these north korean troops have been issued russian uniforms and rifle rifles. that is according to a spy agency. they used a.i. facial recognition to identify one north korean serviceman in ukraine. he was seen next to a missile launcher. the soldier is known to the south korean intel service after he actually appeared in a photo last year on a tour of a weapons factory in north korea with kim jong un himself. already, the north koreans are supplying russia with various types of weapons, including wildly inaccurate ballistic missiles that they're using to terrorize civilians in their

homes every single night. it's unclear how russia may hope to use these troops. but ukrainian and western officials suggest a likely deployment would be to reenforce russian positions in the kursk region, territory seized by cra ukrainian forces in august. the north koreans it seems could be there to help with that. >> matt, thank you. the search has been suspended for a woman who fell from a taylor swift-themed cruise ship in the bahamas. on wednesday, the u.s. coast guard said the royal bahamas defense force was suspending search based on new evidence. the 66-year-old woman was reported to have gone overboard. royal caribbean's allure of the seas, tuesday night, 17 miles from nassau. cruise originally left from miami on monday and is not affiliated with taylor swift. turning to north carolina where the estimated cost from hurricane helene's devastation has soared to $53 billion. that's triple the $17 billion in
