there. but we begin with the race to the white house, election day is now 12 days away. >> the candidates are on different coasts today, former president donald trump is campaigning in arizona and in nevada. >> vice president harris is holding a star studded rally in georgia. nbc news has learned that beyonce is expected to appear and perform at the vice president's rally in texas tomorrow. brand-new nbc news poll out today shows harris leading trump 50% to 33% among gen-z voters. it's one piece of the puzzle. we'll dig deeper into those numbers in a moment. but we'll start with our correspondents covering each campaign. >> mike memoli outside the white house following the harris campaign and garrett haake covering the trump campaign. mike the harris campaign bringing out barack obama, the

boss and my personal favorite, beyonce what is the campaign saying about how this star power will help the vice president? >> reporter: campaign for the first time with michelle boinl a democratic superstar in her own right, what this is all about at this point, right now in those closing weeks, people fed up with politics, they don't want to hear and see the messages, but having this starpower a beyonce concert does help break through the message right now, especially to those less engaged voters. the harris campaign is eager at a time when people are still discouraged with politics to try to bring back a little bit of joy and excitement and to demonstrate enthusiasm, not a secret that democrats are looking at these close polls and getting a little bit more nervous about it, part of this is to keep them energized.

what you'll see at these rallies not only signing up those most enthusiastic voters, to make sure those people have a plan to vote on election day. so crucial to know when and where you're boeing to vote. >> garrett, you're in tempe, home to arizona state university, former president trump will be speaking in an arena on campus, how does that fit into the strategy of the campaign in targeting younger voters? >> reporter: yeah, kate, they're just starting to screen people to let them in this arena. critical on the his strategy, for donald trump young men are the key to victory. by speaking in an arena on campus, on a day where classes in session, their hoping they can bring some of those folks in at a time when early voting is under way. they want to capture as much of the enthusiasm and intensity

that comes with trump supporters at trump rallies and turn them directly into trump voters, that's the challenge with young male voters. getting them as enthusiastic getting them off the couch on election day. they want to bank those votes early. >> garrett, you're still a young voter. let's bring in savannah sellers who will talk about this brand-new gen-z poll. we mentioned the top line number is that harris leads over trump 50% to 33%. that's a pretty sizable gap among gen-z voters. the age is -- >> from 18 to 29-year-olds. 2,000 registered voters in that age bracket 18 to 29. we'll break down gender in just a moment to add on to what garrett said. what issues matter most? number one for both men and

women was inflation and cost of living 32%. gender, second choice was a little bit different. the mixed jirnd. for women their second choice, second most popular was abortion at 13% when you talk about just women. another thing on abortion, we talk about, is that going to be the motivating issue that gets the voter to the poll. look right here, 42% said they would only vote for a candidate who shares their exact views on abortion. when i was just speaking with young voters in wisconsin, many were motivated by that singular issue to go to the polls. >> the voters in wisconsin a key battleground, what was the underarching theme. >> they're only hearing about the election right now, she opened her mailbox and showed me

it's stuffed with political ads. energizing and exciting in one way but tiring in another way. >> it's a lot of excitement but also just kind of apprehension and a lot of anxiety. it's a lot of information flying around and you kind of have to pick and choose what to believe and what not to believe. >> i'm not happy with the way the country is moving in the general direction, we're in decline, we're in a country in decline right now so i think we need to make america great again and that's the foundation of what trump is trying to do with his policies. >> that sentiment of decline i'm sorry to say was a huge theme here, 77% of voters said the u.s. is on the wraong track. >> i want to go back to garrett, mentioned this push by former president trump for young,

particularly male voters, right, the places that he's speaking the next few days, do we know from this poll, that survey, is it works. >> that's a great question. we said 50% for harris, 33% for trump. okay, this is a gen-z poll, most want to vote for harris. but there's a divide. women break for harris with 33-point margin. men are virtually tied. the difference when it comes to that gender it's totally different and it's also changed, moved a little bit more toward trump. yes, the efforts do seem to be working. we also levi said,levi said, massively i've seen young people move in the conservative direction. >> young male. >> yes. >> evenly divided if you look at

earlier this week arrested a man who made online threats to donald trump jr. >> tom, what more are police saying about his plans. >> reporter: one of the concerns here is just how quickly this was escalating, it's actually something that was included in the court documents by the police department, this individual showing a pattern of escalation, what does that mean? three separate incidents more of them have happened recently, but one of the reasons they say they were able to make this arrest they tied him to 2022 incident involving the campaign and the election back then, they also say and they've charged him with ten counts here including state terrorism charge with leaving behind bags filled with a white powder on campaign signs, so he's been doing that as well they alleged. this has been ongoing for some time. they found over 120 guns at his

house and 250,000 rounds of ammo, they definitely have a long-term concern about this individual and part of an unfortunate and dark trend that we're seeing as we approach election day. >> not just arizona, right, there are police departments all over the country that are sensing these heightened tension. >> reporter: there's a big change from last election and that people now are more acutely aware in the law enforcement community across the country that, look, political violence is a real thing, and if there's not a better exhibit of two attempted assassinations on the republican candidate donald trump i don't know what is. january 6th aswell, look at the violence that day by trump supporters and say, that's a sea change and a pivot point as well. this is very different election from 2020 and yes, they're seeing targeted threats especially against election workers, that's something they've been focused on and

the federal statute that prohibits paying people to register to vote. other legal experts disagree with that. but it was interesting that the justice department sent a letter we learned yesterday to america pac warning that this contest could violate the law and since that letter was sent they haven't announced any winners and appeared to change the rules slightly of contest, nonetheless people i spoke to don't expect any prosecution from this. just warning the pac that it was getting into a gray area. >> have we heard from musk and his political group yet. >> we have not. our inquiries to the pac haven't been answered. >> ken dilanian with the lastest from washington, thank you. the strike will go on, boeing machinists yesterday voted against a new labor union,

extends a work stoppage that has halted most of boeing aircraft production. here's tom costello. >> reporter: it's a major setback for america's aviation giant. nearly six weeks after walking off the job, members of the union representing more than 30,000 machinists voted overnight to continue their strike, which is costing the company roughly a billion dollars a month. 64% of the union members rejected boeing's latest offer, which included a 35% pay hike over 4 years. the union says, "we have made tremendous gains. however, we have not achieved enough to meet our members' demands. the union had originally asked for a 40% increase, and some workers upset the latest proposal did not include a pension plan, which boeing scrapped ten years ago." it comes as boeing just reported a staggering $6 billion quarterly earnings loss. boeing's ceo on cnbc yesterday before the vote.

>> this isn't going to be fixed in one fell swoop. we've got a lot of issues here that we're dealing with. the first thing we've got to do is stabilize the business, and obviously, getting through the im strike is the first big step in doing that. >> reporter: it's just the latest in a string of big setbacks for boeing, including that mid-air door plug blowout on an alaska airlines jet, leading to multiple federal investigations. in july, the company agreed to plead guilty to criminal fraud charge tied to crashes overseas that led to 346 deaths. after the aircraft safety issues, boeing has said it is committed to change, slowing down production on the assembly line, as it puts in place new safety practices. but with the strike now extended, the company is facing new headwinds. tom costello, nbc news. coming up, surveillance video shows the moment passengers step in when the bus driver suffered a medical

clerks in san francisco on strike right now. and this may cause delays in cases and in trials. nbc bay area's thom jensen joins us with the details. reporter. good afternoon. the nima momeni trial is now on hold until next wednesday. one of his attorneys told me that it is not due to the one day picketing that is going on right now, with the 200 court clerks here, she said. it is because of a scheduling conflict with the judge. but you have to imagine with the 200, most veteran clerks striking here, this system is going to

have a lot of scheduling conflicts with a lot of judges and a lot of courtrooms. the union says the courts are already severely understaffed, and this will create nightmares for a handful of administrators and probationary employees who are now left to do all of the clerking for every court. the trial for the man accused of killing cash app founder bob lee on hold now until wednesday. his attorney said, and not because of the strike once again. a member of the union's bargaining team said this tiny crew will likely prioritize important cases like moments, as they've done in the past, but they will fill this workload. the arraignments, the people in custody that need to get their day in court. they're going to manage. it's going to be a long day for them. but part of the idea is, you know, we've been at the bargaining table for two months and they're they're taking no interest in seeing our perspective. the union says courts are mismanaged, understaffed and lack proper training. a union spokesman said

the problems are already causing delays and even errors in some cases, and that management refuses to budge on those issues. they say if this one day picket is not effective, a prolonged strike is not off of the table in san francisco. thom jensen, nbc bay area news. thank you tom. if you thought bridge tolls were already expensive and might get even pricier, the toll authority is unveiling a new proposal. it wants to hike toll rates by $0.50 a year over the course of five years, starting in 2026. that means by 2030, you could be paying up to $10.50. these are for all the bay area bridges, not the golden gate. that's the exception. drivers without a fast track would pay slightly more than that. public hearings will be held before a final decision is made. it's a beautiful day outside. here's meteorologist kari hall with our forecast as we take a look at our thursday afternoon forecast. it will be nice and mild. highs reaching into the upper 70s and

low 80s. one of our warmer spots again. gilroy with a high of 84 degrees and mostly upper seconds. a few low 80s for the east bay with danville topping out at 78 degrees and 77 in hayward, as well as oakland. and looking at the coast, it's going to be fairly nice there with a high of 71. 77 in palo alto and mid 70s for downtown san francisco. while in the north bay, it's going to be another warm day, up to 84 in ukiah and 73 in mill valley. we'll see this on repeat through at least saturday, but then we're going to see some changes coming our way. we'll talk about that in our 7-day forecast that's coming up in about 30 minutes. okay. see you in a bit. here are some other stories you need to know about new resources. for some teachers working to make it in the bay. a groundbreaking ceremony for a new community in dublin. but first, a legal victory for some former bart employees. they sued the transit agency over its covid vaccine mandate. bart required all employees to get the covid vaccine back in 2021, but six

former employees say they did not get the vaccine. they tried to get exemptions, but they claim bart did not accommodate and then fired them. so those employees sued bart. they say they faced religious discrimination. a jury unanimously ruled bart did not prove its case and ordered bart to pay those workers a total of $7 million. bart has declined our request for comment. in dublin today, the city celebrated the beginning of construction for a new communit. landsea homes broke ground at the dublin center. landsea says it will start building a community with 500 homes and five 500 homes. company leaders say. there's also said to be a community swim center, a water park, restaurants and shops. landsea says sales for the homes will start later this year and another community for teachers is also in the works. construction for a new affordable housing community for educators is almost done. we got to take a look at the 231 grant in palo alto earlier this morning. adobe communities and mercy housing california started construction last year. the

who is voting republican for the first time, is exactly the kind of voter the harris campaign worries about. >> when i look at kamala, i don't see leadership the way i see it in trump. being the most moral person doesn't always make you the best candidate. >> reporter: former president obama has criticized what he sees as sexism as a reason some black men may not be supporting harris. >> i'm speaking to men directly. part of it makes me think that, well, you just aren't feeling the idea of having a woman as president. >> reporter: at this barbershop in philadelphia, troy garnet is also voting for trump. what do you like most about donald trump, especially this year, since you're changing to voting for republican? >> he's transparent. he's keeping it real. >> reporter: but most men here said they are supporting harris. >> i used to be for trump, i was a little brainwashed. >> reporter: do you feel like some of the stuff that made you consider voting for trump were misinformation? >> absolutely. >> reporter: what do you like about vice president harris? >> her policies. >> reporter: one harris aide

new information about the deadly e coli outbreak tied to mcdonald's. >> we're learning the outbreak could beyond the fast food giant. the number of e. coli cases is likely to go up. maura barrett joins us now from chicago. health officials are zeroing in on onions as the source of this contamination, it might not just be mcdonald's though, walk us through that. >> reporter: so the fda has confirmed they're investigating taylor farms which provides onions to various restaurants across the region, we're not shire if they district directly to mcdonald's or they go through another distributor. taylor farms said ths not

any e. coli tied to what they've seen so far in their facilities but they did so out of abundance of caution. they offeredhis voluntary ren colorado specifically. we do know that some of those onions in this case go to restaurants like taco bell, big burrito chain in the region, did these onions that were affected reach other restaurants? it's the onio in, s specifically that the fda issing looing at and the cdc confirmed that this is the first time that onions has been linked to e. coli. >> the first lawsuit of many to come is what we're expecting. we spoke with a lawyer, he's working with more than 15 clients, expecting to see more of those lawsuits, i want to hear a little bit from our

and deadly impact from rising abortion bans across the country. >> there's new study that found that infant mortality rates in the united states increase following the supreme court decision that overturned roe v. wade, that same research also suggested that the total number of baby deaths were higher than expected. joining us now is dr. john torres, dr. john, can you walk us through exactly what researchers found. >> what they found when you go back to june of 2022 when they actually rescinded roe v. wade, the dobbs decision, look to 7 to 14 months after that, you can see right there what they found is infant mortality rose by 7% for all infants. it rose by 10% with those congenital anominals.

rocking san jose city hall. embattled councilman omar torres is now asking for a leave of absence. it's in the wake of an ongoing investigation. he is battling allegations he may have committed sexual misconduct involving a minor. councilman torres vigorously denies that, but he's also been a no show ever since. word of that investigation got out, and he's missed the two past city council meetings. a new memo from torres, obtained by the san jose spotlight, is now asking for continued leave until november 5th. that's following a doctor's recommendation, citing his mental health. some of his
