the big name candidates are bringing out in hopes it could boost their chances of winning the white house. this is today in the bay. good friday morning to you. thanks for starting your day with us at 6:00. right now, friday morning, i'm laura garcia, and i'm marcus washington. of course, we got you covered. when it comes to that commute. mike's handling that. but first let's talk about that forecast for today. it is friday and a lot of folks are ready to get out and first go to work and then have some fun and then have some fun. and by that time the weather is going to be nice. we are starting out chilly with upper 40s right now in walnut creek, and we're seeing a lot of 40s for some of our inland valleys. in san jose, it's 53 as you're heading out, so yes, jacket weather for the morning later today. short sleeves. let's head to castro valley with a look at what to expect a cloudy morning. temperatures going from low 50s to 72 at noon. it's going to be great to have lunch outside. even dinner outside too. it's going to be in the upper 70s in

dublin 78, in san jose and 75 in san francisco, while napa will reach a high of 79 degrees. we'll talk about the weekend coming up. mike, is it still friday light? yeah, after a couple of disabled big rigs around the bay. one was at the richmond bridge that cleared. so did the one in fremont. we just got word that it's the all clear and great sensor reads down there. lining up for the first burst for san jose, but we're now starting to see a little slowing north 680. that overnight road work zone coming out of sunol looks like there's some slowing and maybe some lane restriction continues just for a bit there. no problem. just showing that. still a little bit of slowing for highway four. lighter friday. so highway 37 has the biggest build as well as the bay bridge. not enough to show up with a backup at the toll plaza, but look at these cars are slowing as they approach the toll plaza complex. so there must be a build on the incline. back to you. thanks, mike. well, this morning, a monumental shift for the menendez brothers, the two men behind bars for the murder of their parents in 1989. later this morning, los angeles district attorney george gascon will ask the court to lessen
6:03 am
their sentence. today, in the bay's ginger conejero saab joining us live this morning and ginger, this all comes as gascon is running for reelection. that's correct, marcus. but he tells nbc news that this has nothing to do with the election. d.a. gascon will recommend to the court that the life without the possibility of parole be removed, and due to the time that's already been spent behind bars and their age, when they committed the crime, the menendez brothers would be eligible for parole immediately. but ultimately, that decision lies with a los angeles judge. now, they were 21 and 18 years of age at the time of the crime. they shot and killed their parents in their beverly hills home in 1989, and defense attorneys for the menendez brothers argued that they were sexually abused by their father. however, after two trials, they were convicted of murder and sentenced to life without parole. years later, the tide is shifting, with family members
6:04 am
and supporters calling for the case to be reconsidered. the support that they've received from the community, from the relatives of their family and from what they've done in prison, they have a very good chance of getting out on parole. now, the attention on this case has been renewed worldwide thanks to social media pleas from family members, celebrities, a netflix show and a peacock documentary. and as this story develops, marcus, you can be sure that the world and social media will be watching in san francisco, ginger conejero saab today in the bay, even more people watching after that recent movie on netflix too. so all eyes on this. thanks, ginge. a lot of eyes on the election as well. the presidential hopefuls bringing out the star power to their campaigns as election day draws closer, former president

school student is facing charges after allegedly brutally attacking an assistant principal. san ramon police say this all happened at cal high's homecoming dance. investigators say that that assistant principal approached two students in the parking lot saturday night, telling them that they could not leave early. well, that's when one of the 16 year olds allegedly dragged her by her hair from one end of the parking lot to the other. although this happened nearly a week ago, parents we spoke with say that they are still shocked if kids are going to come here and cause violence in any school. that's just not it's not what we're here to do. it's not what the kids are here to do. they want to have a good time. when i heard about it, i thought i couldn't believe that something like that was actually happening here and that another teenager would have the audacity to attack another person, particularly an adult. the assistant principal was treated at a local hospital for her injuries and has since been released. that teen now faces two felony charges, including kidnaping. it is 608 right now, and later this morning, teachers

rossmoor. whoa! you were excited, right? oh, we get you going this friday. so the team tapped into bay area's own pillow, as well as jaws for this song. it's called don't lose your head. i actually got a chance to talk to the marin county native, george, about the inspiration for this song. if i'm going to do something for the bay, i want it to feel as bay area centric as possible. so you know, working with a rapper from the bay, it was kind of, you know, a no brainer. and he has been, you know, so awesome to work with for me. but he also has worked with the warriors in the past. he's working with them now. he's done a lot of stuff with the niners as well. so like he was the perfect guy to tap for it. you know? so that new track will be played during the warriors game over at chase center. but you can also listen right now that new single is on streaming services. yeah. good driving song, right? yeah, yeah, but not road rage. if you have
6:20 am
road rage, don't play that. road rage. it says don't lose your head. yeah, exactly. that is a good song for driving. don't lose your head. but if you're in the game, lose your head. that's true. all right. there's so many sporting events going on this weekend. we have baseball. we'll be watching the world series. we have also the giants. not giants. the 49ers. unfortunately, giants are not in it. and then we have the warriors too. we have the stanford and berkeley. okay. but you may want to get away from it all. here's a look at palisades tahoe where we've been talking about the later date of opening. there. but if you're going this weekend, it's going to be nice and sunny. mild temperatures in the mid 60s for highs and then getting cooler on sunday with some gusty winds. it's also the time of year for leaf peeping. the fall foliage is maxing out right now in parts of the sierra, so as you're driving, you may be able to see some of those vivid colors across parts of the north bay, as well as in the central valley. but
6:21 am
unfortunately, we are past the peak in much of the sierra, but you may still be able to see some bright colors there and the weather is nice. we're getting back to some sweater weather, at least for the mornings. short sleeve weather for the afternoons as our highs head for the low 80s. and we'll be up to 80 today in novato and santa rosa, while san francisco will be in the mid 70s and it's pretty much the same tomorrow. we're not looking at much of a change, but then sunday notice a lot more green on the map here. that's slightly cooler temperatures still very mild, but we are not going to see any 80s here and will be mostly in the 70s. we will have a cold front approaching that will bring in some spotty showers, but the best chance of rain on sunday will be just to our north. looks like ukiah on northwood will have a better chance of at least measuring something. it's not a lot, but as that system moves into the bay area, a lot of the rain is starting to dry up. so we'll see that moving in on sunday afternoon. so a look at our estimated rain forecast. it
6:22 am
shows a few hundredths of an inch of rain. and that's if you see any at all. it looks like santa rosa may get the most at 0.06. so once again that's not a lot. that's not the soaker we need, but it will help bring in some cooler temperatures that will stick with us as we go into the beginning of next week, and our overnight lows will drop down to the lower 40s. now, mike, you have a crash and possible complications. yeah, this is unexpected because it's what we call counter commute. northbound 680 out of the danville area, heading up into walnut creek at the southern edge. we have some slowing crashes in lanes. i saw mention of a propane tanks. i also saw mentioned that they're controlled, so that should be better news. hoping they can clear those vehicles to the shoulder. but there's a slower drive coming up out of danville, direction into walnut creek. the interchange for walnut creek moves smoothly, and no surprises for that commute direction through contra costa county. here's the build forming later at the bay bridge because it's friday. back to you. oh yes, it is. thanks, mike. 622. coming up next on today in the bay nbc bay

short sleeve weather going into the afternoon. a significant warm-up headed our way, and some of us in the 40s. right now it's 47 in walnut creek and it's 54 in san mateo. but then as we go throughout the day in dublin, we'll see the early morning clouds clearing out a mostly sunny afternoon as we go from look at this range here, 46 at 7:00 to 80 at 3:00. so you want to be dressed with layers for the all the changes we have coming our way. and this weather continues into tomorrow. but then going into the end of the weekend we'll see more clouds. and that will help bring in some cooler temperatures. we'll talk about all of the changes coming up in a few minutes. all right gary, thank you. well, turning to decision 2024 and the stars are out supporting their favorite candidates for president. scott mcgrew rallies are almost turning into concerts. they really are a lot of energy. good morning. we got word that beyonce will perform with kamala harris tonight in texas. eminem joined the harris campaign last weekend. the boss, bruce springsteen joined harris during her campaign stop in

clarkston, georgia, just northeast of atlanta. rally was really long because it included harris, springsteen and for the first time, obama on stage with harris. unlike the first time, he won't have people like john kelly around to stop him. he'll be surrounded by people who are just as loony as he is, and who will let him do what he wants. and so my question to you, georgia, is, how is any of that going to help you? vice presidential candidate tim walz featured james taylor at his rally. he led the crowd in a rendition of america the beautiful, joined by his wife and son, willie nelson will join harris and beyonce at a rally in houston this weekend. donald trump, meantime, agreed to go on the joe rogan podcast taping that today. this is something the harris campaign has at least considered but never locked down. rogan speaks to an

magazine that trump had praised hitler. trump denied it, said, i never said that. i would never say that. the latest new york times poll shows trump and harris in a dead heat, just as yesterday's cnbc poll did, and the wall street journal poll before that, all within the margin of error. of course, these are national polls, and we don't elect a president with a national vote. we vote state by state. the new york times this morning with an article wondering out loud. is it possible trump will win the popular vote? but not win the election? that's happened to hillary clinton and al gore, though it's never happened to a republican. we'll see what happens. thanks so much, scott. 635 right now in oakland, three campaign volunteers who were going door to door for incumbent city council member carol fife say they were attacked last night shortly after fife posted this video on social media. three of my canvassers were assaulted. one physically was hit in the head with a gun in

oakland tonight for handing out my literature. this is insane, she says. the attack happened while they were passing out literature in uptown area of oakland. we've reached out to oakland pd to find out more information. we've yet to hear back. alameda county district attorney pamela price is now facing a threat of a defamation lawsuit. bay area u.s. representative eric swalwell recently sent a letter to price demanding that she retract what he calls malicious and defamatory statements. price posted comments about the congressman on facebook october 2nd, the same day he endorsed. recalling her. price wrote swalwell was trying to oust her, to, quote, shield himself from unethical practices during his time in the da's office. 20 years ago. he denies that claim. congressman swalwell says that price has two days to retract her statement, or he'll take her to court. price's campaign issued a statement saying
6:37 am
constituents would be better served to swalwell focus less on trying to overturn the will of voters, and more on defending our democracy. well, here we go, san francisco 49 ers getting ready for a must win game against the dallas cowboys sunday night. right here. you can watch it on nbc bay area. the niners need to win to recover from their loss against the chiefs. and to be really in a better position to make a playoff push in the second half of the season. yeah. today in the bay's kris sanchez joining us live from levi's stadium with why fans could make all the difference here. and kris maybe you on the field too can make a big difference. i mean listen there are a lot of injuries. so we should all be getting ready to be ready. you know, the fans are always really important to the niners here at home. but this time they could be critical as the team tries to maximize that home field advantage. now
6:38 am
the niners could be going into sunday night's game coming off of that really disheartening and painful loss to the to the chiefs. they're going in without their top five offensive playmakers brandon aiyuk still out for the season. christian mccaffrey out for at least one more game. deebo samuel is still recovering from pneumonia, although he was at practice and jauan jennings has a hip injury. george kittle also questionable because of a foot sprain that he's been battling. our 49ers insider, matt maiocco, says that playing at home means more rest for the niners, and all of that energy from the 49ers faithful. i think where the team is now, they certainly need to have a home game followed by the bye week so that when they get back out there they can make that playoff push. the question is, and this is a big one, whether they start the second half of the season, their final nine games with a four and four
6:39 am
record. and that sounds like a heck of a lot better than a three and five record. so that's why this game against the cowboys is so very important. to make sure fans are fired up for sunday night football, the team is hosting a rally at guild house in downtown san jose on saturday. that's from 1:00 to four. it is free and it is family friendly. you can go to the 40 niners.com fan section to register ahead of time so they know you're coming. the team's marketing vp says that fans really need to make levi's stadium uncomfortable for dallas. i know our fans are strong and proud to represent the 49ers, so i have full expectation that they'll be raucous and ready to go and ready to support the team on the field. now you can watch the niners cowboys game right here on nbc. bay area kickoff is at 520 sunday night. we will have live coverage ahead of the game. and you know, i like statistics. one that i found interesting is that this is a battle between
6:40 am
the highest paid quarterback in the nfl and the lowest paid quarterback in the nfl, and by a long shot dak's dak prescott makes $60 million a year on average. and brock purdy because he's still a rookie less than a million a year. so let's see whether the money wins or whether the heart wins. i'm going with the heart. so are we going with the niners? yeah that money would be nice though. yea. thanks, chris. he'll get it later. he'll get it later. yeah. especially if he performs at this game. all right. so let's see the game day forecast. it's going to be right here in our backyard. yeah. and it's going to be a little iffy during parts of the game. we'll have to keep an eye to the sky because there will be a mix of sun and clouds. we'll start out with temperatures in the low 70s. and then we're going to watch out for a slight chance of drizzle. i don't think this is going to be a really high chance, but we will have to keep an eye on that. and temperatures go from

low 70s down to the mid 60s, and a breezy northwesterly wind at about 10 to 15mph. we've also been watching our forecast for the wake forest and stanford game. it's going to be beautiful. no worries whatsoever there. with our highs in the low 70s, a few peeks of sunshine and those winds at about 10 to 15mph. and then we also have the warriors home opener on sunday there at the chase center. it's going to be in the low 60s, maybe misting and drizzling. but the good thing is that this is inside, so we don't have too many worries about that unless you're doing the watch party on the outside. now, we are also going to check out the forecast for the los gatos fall wine wal. this is tomorrow, starts at 2:00 in the afternoon and really nice temperatures in the mid 70s as you head out for dinner after the wine walk. it's going to be in the mid 60s and then turning mostly cloudy, but we do need to get to the pumpkin patch this weekend. check out petaluma's forecast. it's going to be in the mid 70s on saturday and mostly sunny. a little bit
6:42 am
cooler on sunday and we will have to watch out for that slight chance of rain. mike, that crash is now an alert. yeah. so there goes our friday light for this portion of contra costa county. northbound we talked about the crash. it's actually closer to red gear. but we do have an indication there may be another near lavorgna. we have three lanes blocking your northbound direction, but the southbound side, they requested chp shut down one of your southbound lanes as well. that crash activity in the center divide area. big distraction. there may be propane tanks as well, but it sounds like they're secured from the area. we're watching that unusual slowing between walnut creek as you're heading down or to or from danville with the bill comes down from the opposite direction. that's typical for your commute off highway four. everything else through contra costa and alameda counties looks pretty standard. we had earlier slowing northbound 680 that just cleared from overnight road work. so that's all clear now in the south bay, just starting its friday build back to you. thanks, mike. 642 right now. taylor swift's tour back in the u.s. and certainly in full force. the tickets are

6:48 am
honors plan to honor valenzuela with a ceremony before the game, including a moment of silence, as well as a mariachi tribute. a commemorative number 34 patch will be worn by every player throughout the series. a nice tribute there. first pitch is just after five with game two tomorrow. also in l.a. weather wise should be pretty good. all around. yeah. so whether you'll be hitting the road or staying here locally, we are going to see a nice start to our weekend with some changes later on. let's get a look at what's happening here with the wide view of our satellite and radar. the farther north you go, the more rain that we've seen and will possibly see into the weekend. we're getting a few clouds coming in. there's been a very active storm pattern up around portland and that's going to stay there. but i've also been keeping an eye on hurricane, kristie. yesterday, this was the most powerful hurricane happening in the world at the time. it was a category
6:49 am
five. it is now a category four off the west coast of mexico, and it is expected to continue to weaken as it stays out in the open pacific. but we are continuing to watch even our very active hurricane season, whether or not it affects land, and then looking at what's happening this morning in dublin as you're heading out, it is all nice and clear. we will start to see a few clouds coming in over the next couple of hours. so by 9:00 it's mostly cloudy. temperatures in the mid 50s and as we go throughout the day, we're headed briefly up to 80 degrees and then temperatures will drop down quickly for the evening. for those late evening plans. make sure you have a jacket, but we are going to have short sleeve weather during the middle of the day. los gatos today 81 degrees and 78, in san jose. much of the east bay upper 70s low 80s matching the weather we've had all throughout the week. it continues today. redwood city 76 and 75, in downtown san francisco. and for the north bay, we'll see a high of 80 in novato and santa rosa, 83 in ukiah. going ahead, we've
6:50 am
been talking a lot about this cold front coming in by sunday. more clouds and rain from ukiah on northward while the rain kind of just falls apart as it moves closer to the bay area, we're still keeping a slight chance of rain in our forecast, especially for the north bay sunday afternoon, and then tapering off as it heads into the evening, and then moving across much of the rest of the bay area. only a few hundredths of an inch of rain expected, so some spotty sprinkles here and there on sunday. clearing out on monday with cooler temperatures settling in and our overnights will be much more of a chill in the air with low 40s for next week and then looking at san francisco, some spotty showers possible from sunday into monday. and mike, you are tracking that crash and that alert. that's right. continues over here at walnut creek and traveling northbound where you don't expect any slowing, especially on a friday out of danville. it's jammed up where you lose three lanes just around rutger road. this crash still blocks your left lanes
6:51 am
southbound. they've called for one lane to be closed. there's clearly a distraction and slowing coming off the walnut creek interchange. that's a tough section for 680 24 and 680. in the northern section. that's just fine, though, showing you the friday light for the rest of contra costa county. highway four now shows the bill with more traffic coming in, heading eventually toward the bay bridge. a crash reported at the span, but we don't see anything in this live camera. it looks like traffic is still able to make it through the toll plaza and onto the span without any major problems. anywhere south of there. looking at a friday, lighter volume here we're looking at northbound 101 with some slowing. now in spots at capital expressway and up past 280, which is starting to see more traffic build as well. heading toward downtown san jose. back to you. thank you mike. 651 for you right now, and as stanford doctor is in the fight of his life, this is after being diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. and as he goes through treatment, he's decided to share his journey by teaching a new course to help educate future physicians. garvin thomas with this morning's bay area.
