both former president trump and vice president harris appeared in red texas on friday. harris bringing out long anticipated star power with beyonce now formally endorsing her. we will have much more on that visit coming up. we do begin this morning with the surprise air strikes overnight by israel into iran. the attack said to be direct retaliation for when iran struck israel earlier this month. our team is covering this story from the middle east and here at home. let's begin with nbc's raf sanchez in tel aviv this morning. raf, what's the latest? >> reporter: laura, good morning. israel's military says its war planes struck missile sites across iran last night at the factories where the missiles were made and some missile launchers itself. it is also saying it targeted iranian air defenses to make it easier to carry out strikes in the future. at this point, israel is saying that its attack is finished and

it does not intend to escalate further. what is notable, israel saying it did not attack iranian nuclear facilities or oil fields. there had been deep concern in the u.s. that prime minister benjamin netanyahu could order attacks like that which could trigger an all-out regional war. now iran is saying that two of its soldiers were killed in the strikes. saying israel targeted military bases in three different provinces, including tehran. it is saying its air defenses largely held up and that the damage at this point is limited. ultimately, it will be the iran supreme leader if they will retaliate. israel forces are on high alert. right now, there have been instructions to stay near bomb shelters. that is a possible indication

that they do not believe an iranian attack is imminent. laura. >> thank you, raf sanchez. >> we have allie at the white house. we understand the u.s. got a heads up. what more are we learning overnight? >> reporter: peter, president biden is at his moment in delaware for the weekend. he and the vice president are looking for the latest that the u.s. was notified before hand, but did not participate in. the official calling the israel response targeted and proportional to the iran attack earlier this month adding the president and his national security team encouraged israeli officials to harm and escalate tensions. this should be the end of the back and forth between the two countries. now warning iran that the u.s. is prepared to help israel to defend against further attacks.

the strikes began after antony blinken wrapped up his 11th trip to the middle east since the war began. the region once again in uncharted territory as peace talks are slated to resume tomorrow in qatar just nine days out from the election that could shape the future of the war-torn region. peter. >> allie raffa, thank you. >> let's bring in jeremy bash, former cia at the pentagon. talk to us about the thinking of the locations here. clearly this was deliberate and intentional, but also trying not to prompt furthest can legislation. >> i think israel had three options. medium, big and very big. they did not hit nuclear sites or energy and oil sites. they went after military sites and radar stations and missile and drone production facilities and launch sites. this was a message to iran that we can strike inside, deep

inside your country, but we're not going to escalate. we'll leave this round as a retaliation for the 200 ballistic missiles that were fired at israel on october 1st. i think israel won this round here, if you will. >> jeremy, the relationship with benjamin netanyahu and president biden has been strained as the war extends. how does this escalate as the u.s. is trying to wind down the war in the middle east? >> peter, there have been strains, but tactical oord nation and the u.s. is providing weapons to israel and providing support in shooting down the ballistic missiles. this activity by israel was an carefully coordinated by the white house. the biden/harris team wants bebe to keep this round targeted. this was a dry run.

father. hayward police arrested david sanchez on thursday. police say he told them he shot and killed his own father and dumped his body in a dumpster in union city. on wednesday, family members requested that hayward police check on the father and son. relatives said they were concerned because the father did not show up for work and was not answering his phone. the 25 year old sanchez now faces murder charges. now to a follow up for san jose city council candidate tam truong. criminal charges tied to a mortgage fraud lawsuit suit against truong were dismissed yesterday. truong is a san jose police sergeant vying for the district eight seat. he's running on a platform of public safety and accountability on homeless spending. but his campaign drew questions and opposition when he was charged with criminal grand theft back in september. the santa cruz county district attorney asked the judge to dismiss the charge because of insufficient evidence, and the judge agreed.

he was one behind the band traveling the world. lesh was 84 years old. also this morning, it was a big day for students in north carolina. a community up ended last month when hurricane helene devastated that region. nbc's kathy park was there as students returned to school for the first time since the disaster. kathy, good morning. >> reporter: peter, good morning to you. that's right. this wasn't your typical first day back because keep in mind we're still in the disaster zone. schedules had to be adjusted and bus routes reworked and students still relying on bottled water for now. regardless of the changes, everyone is grateful to be back. after weeks away from school, thousands of western north carolina students returned to the classroom. the first time since helene ripped through the region. >> a lot of people was real happy. they were crying from happy tears because they got to see their friends after a month. >> reporter: power, internet and
