you can almost see all the way back to the golden gate bridge. thank you so much for starting your saturday morning with us. i'm kira klapper cinthia pimentel has a quick look at our microclimate forecast. i know we're not talking about the sunrise, but it's so dark outside and what in a week i think we fall back already, don't we? i think maybe something like that. something like that. yeah. we're still trying to keep track of where the year has gone. good morning kira. good morning everyone. and as you've noticed, those darker afternoons, those chillier mornings as well, we are waking up with 39 right now in boulder creek. some low 40s continue towards the east bay. 42 in danville. and we've got 40 for sonoma and napa. so definitely some sweater weather. it will be a gradual warming as we get into that brunch time hour and into the afternoon. highs only in the upper 60s. low 70s bayshore to some upper 70s in our inland valleys. there is a major shift ahead as we go on into the

second half of the weekend. for those of you that want it to feel like fall, i've got that and a chance of rain in that 7-day forecast. i'll be back in a few minutes. keir. back to you. all right. cynthia, thanks. new overnight uc berkeley students on high alert after shots were fired early this morning. around 1 a.m. campus police sent out an alert to students that their shotspotter system detected gunshots in several locations south of campus. it started on telegraph avenue and east street. that's right near amoeba music. then the system detected the shots going south and west, away from campus. not long after the alert was cleared. no word on any injuries nor arrests. berkeley police say they are now investigating. now two decision 2024 just about a week and a half until election day, the bay area election officials are opening up weekend voting locations and putting out reminders of mail in deadlines.

this coming tuesday. the 29th is the last recommended day to mail in your ballot. ballots will be accepted as long as they are postmarked by election day, which is tuesday, november 5th, and they must be received by november 12th. you can also drop off your ballot at any official drop box by 8 p.m. on election day, or go to your local polling place and remember, sign the back of your envelope. most bay area counties do kick off weekend voting hours. today, san mateo county will open their weekend voting tomorrow. solano county plans to start weekend voting next weekend. so far, contra costa county is the only county with no weekend hours offered, but you see the rest on your screen there. a reminder we do have you covered on all of our local races. just scan that qr code on your screen that will take you to our full voter

guide. with all the important dates and key information on all of your local races. meanwhile, in the south bay, there's a new push to oust city council member omar torres, the mayor of san jose and the city council are calling on torres to resign. and now community leaders and residents are launching an official recall campaign. but as today in the bay's jocelyn moran reports, it could be a lengthy and costly process. here's matthew. a new push to get san jose city councilman omar torres out of office on friday. community members and business owners voiced their concerns and launched a formal campaign to recall him. the behavior is not okay. we don't feel comfortable hosting meetings with his name stamped on there. he has a lot of personal obligations going on outside of work, and he cannot focus on the city. he cannot focus on this district. torres has missed two consecutive council meetings and is now asking for a one month leave of absence, citing his mental health amid a police investigation into alleged sexual misconduct with a minor.

the mayor and rest of the council have made it clear they want torres to resign, but have also said if he doesn't, the only option for voters would be a recall. this is an absolutely right thing to do. though a recall effort could take months. legal analyst stephen clark says city council has one other option to possibly remove torres from office. what would happen is the city council can start a removal hearing against him, and the big question would be, is his underlying conduct related to his duties and the city council? torres hasn't been arrested or charged with a crime, even if charges are filed, that wouldn't necessarily change the dynamic for the city council unless they can show these charges are related in some fashion to his duties as a city council member. torres has maintained his innocence, saying he's the victim of extortion. in the meantime, other council members have been assigned to fill torres spot on city committees. jocelyn moran, nbc,

bay area news. now to a follow up on san jose city council candidate tam truong. this criminal. the criminal charges against truong were dismissed yesterday. in september, he was charged with criminal grand theft in connection with a mortgage fraud lawsuit. truong is a san jose police sergeant vying for the district eight seat. he's running on a platform of public safety and accountability on homeless spending. the santa cruz county district attorney assistant district attorney asked the judge to dismiss the charge because of insufficient evidence. the judge agreed. wel, this morning, the music world is mourning the loss of a legend whose life and career began and ended right here in the bay area. phil lesh, phil lesh, pardon me, the iconic co-founder and bassist of the grateful dead passed peacefully yesterday at the age of 84. today in the bay gia vang is in san francisco. as deadheads gathered with love to fare thee well. the grateful

dead's box of rain blares from this vw van that, for some time friday night, sat right outside of this house in the haight-ashbury neighborhood where, one after another, they came. patrick farrell arrived with flowers, listening to the music of the grateful dead have gotten me through some of the roughest times in my life. i was only here for a three day work trip, so it's poetic that i get to be here on the day he leaves the planet. maybe the sun is shining. phil lesh, the rock band's bassist and founding member, died peacefully, surrounded by family and full of love, according to a post on his instagram. this is where lesh and the band once lived in the 1960s, drawing many deadheads with the band's devoted followers are called there with something to offer. a lot of their songs have lyrics about roses, so it's a symbol of the band and it's, you know, an appropriate thing to do. this is

a really big loss, a sad loss. it's going to take a while to process, so i seen him play many dozens of times and memories that i'll cherish forever. mayor london breed, saying he was a san francisco icon who helped define an era and also shaped the world of music. i brought an unbroken chain, the lyrics to unbroken chain because phil would always rock that one out. lesh's heart on the sidewalk outside of the store. love on haight is carefully surrounded by more flowers and candles. owner sunshine powers will never forget the first time she met him in 1999. phil registered me as an organ donor and that's one of the reasons why i'm at organ donors. because of phil lesh. a big part of his life's mission. lesh was born in berkeley, grew up in the east bay. the grateful dead formed in 1965 and became one of the most influential bands in america, inventing what we now know as jam bands with lush as an anchor. the solid

part of what the grateful dead had and what kept the feet moving was phil lesh's bass playing and his class, his musical training. trained in musical theory, leaving his lasting imprint on music and people. you know, he never knew me, but we all knew him. and you. i don't know, he's just part of my heart to another day. gia vang today in the bay seen before. he will be missed. well, we are going to turn now to an east bay man under arrest, accused of killing his own father. hayward police arrested david sanchez on thursday. police say sanchez told them he shot and killed his father and dumped his body in a dumpster in union city. it all started on wednesday when family members

requested that hayward police check on the father and the son. relatives said they were concerned because the father did not show up for work and wasn't answering his phone. the 25 year old son now faces murder charges. a carjacking at a local amtrak station has commuters on high alert. it happened yesterday morning at the martinez amtrak station in contra costa county. police say a woman the victim as they were putting the luggage into the back seat of their car. that female suspect then drove over the victim's foot as she got away. the suspect also forced an elderly woman who was in the passenger seat of that car, out of the moving car, and dragged her. that victim eventually freed herself. police arrested that suspect in walnut creek. but still, people we spoke with say they are concerned. it's scary. you know, it's not something that should happen, especially at a transit station. you know, it's should be more like, protected. this is a not a typical event in martinez, but

wherever you are, i think situational awareness is always is important. the victims were treated for their injuries, but we are awaiting an update on how they're doing. that accused carjacker now faces multiple charges. her bail is set at $315,000. well, cracking down on sideshows is apparently starting to pay off. the california highway patrol says it has seized more than a dozen cars involved in two separate sideshows on the bay bridge. they both happened on the same night back in early september. one sideshow blocked the eastbound lanes of the bridge, while another blocked the westbound lanes. ever since it happened, the chp says it has collected video evidence from cameras around the bridge, and officers compiled a list of 23 cars that were involved. the chp says it has successfully seized 16 of those cars. here are some photos of some of them,

of skies over dublin on a chilly morning out there. we are approaching sunrise on this final weekend of october. we appreciate your starting it with us. cinthia pimentel will be along in just a few minutes with your full microclimate forecast and a cool down on its way. meanwhile, we are following developing news out of the middle east, where overnight israel launched an attack in iran. the israel defense forces says that the strikes were in response to months of continuous attacks from iran back on october first, iran launched close to 200 ballistic missiles at israel. this marks the first time israel's military has openly attacked iran. the attack risks pushing the two countries

closer to all out war, at a time when militant groups backed by iran, including hamas and gaza and hezbollah in lebanon, already are at war with israel. the hours long attack targeted sites near tehran. the idf says it targeted a missile manufacturing facilities, surface to air missile missile sites and additional iranian aerial capabilities. back here locally, state fish and wildlife is pushing back the start of commercial dungeness crab fishing in the bay area for the sixth consecutive year. wildlife officials say it's to protect endangered whales from those fishing lines. a recent count saw more than 100 humpback whales off the coast of the bay area. the department of fish and wildlife says it will give an update on the season on november 15th. the potential opening date is december 1st. meanwhile, recreational crab fishing opens statewide on november 2nd. there

is a debate over an altar created to honor dia de los muertos, or day of the dead, and it's happening in the south bay. an unhoused man built this altar next to a homeless encampment near 280 and seventh street. it was created on the side of the road by a san jose man. neighbors are fond of it. they say, but caltrans is stepping in and the city says it has to go. do you like it? yeah, i really like it. before it was dirty, too much garbage and always something going on. there was smog, but right now, nice clean flowers. i think it's nice. it's beautiful at night time. it's really, really beautiful. when it's light up because i have candles and lights and everything. so it looks beautiful at nighttime. the city says it is too close to the freeway, and it posted a notice on behalf of caltrans saying the altar has to come down by monday, the day after tomorrow. the homeless man was also given

a notice to vacate that space. he is asking if the city will at least let it stand until after november 2nd, this year's day of the dead dia de los muertos. we've reached out to the city and caltrans. we have yet to hear back. well, if you haven't read a michael connelly book, chances are you've seen one somewhere. connelly will be in the bay area this weekend promoting his latest title. the waiting is the latest in the ballard and bosch series. it's about the los angeles police department's open-unsolved unit. it focuses on a case based on the unsolved black dahlia murders of the 1940s. connelly's nearly 40 novels draw from his experience as a crime and courts reporter for the l.a. times. he talked to us about how much he appreciates his fans, how much they love his books, even when they have suggestions for his characters or their plots. it

big time. it's about time, right? it's about time. i'm ready 43 to start in santa rosa today. but beautiful skies. that has been the way we've looked up this week. just gorgeous throughout the bay 50 to start in walnut creek. and i mean it doesn't get better than that. view over san francisco 53 there and 52 in san jose. it was a chilly one and we'll gradually warm up as we go through the day. but let's take it into the afternoon, see where our temperatures stand. we've got some upper 60s from san francisco to mill valley, some low 70s along the east bay shoreline in oakland and our inland valleys. no more of those 80s for the next couple of days. we're only going to top out 77 out in brentwood, 76 santa rosa and in san jose and los gatos, and get ready to bundle up over the next couple of days, we're going to turn things a little bit cloudier into this evening. so if you have halloween weekend plans in store, i would definitely bring those jackets with the costumes. cloudy skies into our saturday night awaiting for a chance of some drizzle. light sounds of that for our

lung cancer in nonsmokers. our colleagues in oncology were seeing lots of asians coming in with lung cancer, having never smoked. and, you know, a lot of the population, including doctors, thinks about lung cancer as a smoker's disease, which may explain why doctor lynn was and in a way, not shocked. earlier this year to find himself one of the 20% with lung cancer who have never smoked. i'm stage four b, so the most advanced stage of lung cancer. it spread to my brain, to my liver, to my bones. the combination of treatments doctor lynn has been receiving have slowed the disease and given him a good enough quality of life to continue working and teaching. and i guess you'll explain about this. but one class, this fall is different, because i want to take something that is obviously very negative to me personally and get some benefit out of it for, for at least for other people at inflection points in your life from diagnosis to dialog, a doctor's real time

even chillier. a little chilly over the next couple of days. definitely going to put the bur in october as we go on into the final days, we are starting our morning off 48 in san jose, 46 in gilroy. lots of 40s on the map, 45 in dublin. my coolest spots have been up there in the north bay, point reyes and napa at 43 to start our final weekend in october and of course the pumpkin patch is going to be very busy. let's go up to petaluma where we're going to see a mix of sun and clouds for today. temperatures in the upper 70s that will feel nice, but look at that drop as we go on into tomorrow and even putting just a little hint of those rain chances. so if you want that fall pattern that you've been that we've been wishing for really over the last month and a half, it is coming. as we go on into tomorrow, you'll notice more of that breeze picking up cooler and gloomy at times with a chance of squeezing out a raindrop or two, and that will continue into the last couple of days of october. maybe even need an umbrella for our halloween plans. we'll talk about that

order to get a recall election. neither torres nor his attorney have returned our request for comment, but in a recent memo, torres asked the city for a one month medical leave of absence to focus on his mental health. another canceled match for the san jose state women's volleyball team, the san jose spartans, were supposed to face the university of nevada wolf pack this weekend, but the wolf pack players backed out of the game. the team had to forfeit due to not having enough players. some of the players posted on x quote we refuse to participate in any match that advances in justice against female athletes. all of this coming after reports there is a transgender woman on the spartans team. the school has not confirmed. that. four other schools, including boise and utah state, also have canceled games against the spartans this

a week and a half until election day and bay area election officials are opening up voting locations this weekend and putting out reminders of mail in deadlines. this coming tuesday, the 29th is the last recommended day to mail in your ballot. ballots will be accepted as long as they're postmarked by election day. that's the following tuesday, november 5th, and your ballots must be received by november 12th. you can also drop off your ballot at any official drop box by 8 p.m. on election night, or go to your local polling place. remember, you need to sign the back of
