from within. >> reporter: the rally took a dark and divisive tone long before trump took the stage. the opening speaker cracking a racist joke about latinos, so vulgar, it's mostly unarable. >> the latinos love making babies, they do. there's no [ bleep ]. they don't do that. they [ bleep ] just like they did to our country. >> reporter: then pivoting to puerto rico. >> there's literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. yeah, i think it's called puerto rico. >> reporter: that joke not just offensive, but potentially politically un-wise with large populations of puerto rican voters spread out across the spring states, including more than 400,000 in pennsylvania alone. the trump campaign responding to the comedian's set, which included other racist attacks, saying this joke does not reflect the views of president trump or the campaign. other speakers continued the attacks. radio host sid rosenberg on hillary clinton.

island, bad bunny, ricky martin, jennifer lopez, all posting about harris' plan for puerto rico, which by coincidence she posted yesterday in philadelphia. this is a totally different message to their millions of followers on social media than trump got at the rally. >> garrett haake leading us off, thank you. vice president harris will spend the day in michigan in the closing week of the campaign, after a weekend rally in philadelphia, and her first appearance on the trail with former first lady michelle obama. nbc's gabe gutierrez is at the white house. he's got more. good morning. >> reporter: this morning the harris campaign is slamming the rhetoric at trump's madison square garden rally. the vice president is focusing today on the economy, touting her support for manufacturing in a must-win state. in the final sprint to election day, vice president harris heads to barnstorm michigan where

the u.n. security council set to hold a meeting today as the region and world wait to see how iran will respond. nbc's raf sanchez joining us from tel aviv. good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. the cia director was in qatar this weekend for cease-fire talks focused on a new proposal from egypt, a two-day cease-fire in exchange for the release of just four hostages, but those talks overshadowed by tensions between israel and iran. this morning, the middle east on edge. iran weighs its response to israel's unprecedented air strikes this weekend. waves of fighter jets carrying out israel's first ever open attack on its regional enemy, hitting military strikes in retaliation for iran's missile barrage at the start of the month. president biden urging both sides not to escalate further. but iran's supreme leader meeting the families of soldiers killed in the bombing leaving the door open to revenge strikes.

in israel, tensions high after this suspected truck ramming attack near a military base north of tel aviv. most of the victims were senior citizens. some of them pinned underneath the truck. one man in his early 70s was killed. more than 30 others injured. it was a quiet start to the israeli workweek here when this truck came crashing in. you can see from the damage the speed it was going. the driver, a palestinian man with israeli citizenship, was shot dead at the scene, police say. while in gaza, this video going viral. a 6-year-old girl with her sister on her back, walking barefoot for miles after her sibling was hit by a car. our team met her family in the tent they now call home. they were forced to flee northern gaza by bombing and looming famine. little children made to grow up fast in this pitiless war. and israel's military today

wrapping up a raid on one of the last functioning hospitals in northern gaza. they say they found weapons inside and captured militants. but hospital authorities say they killed a number of civilians, including the hospital director's son. >> raf, thank you very much. meantime, we are following a major update on mcdonald's e. coli outbreak. the fast food giant announcing it will put quarter pounders back on the menu at hundreds of restaurants after testing ruled out the beef patties as the source. so let's bring in maggie vespa at mcdonald's global headquarters in chicago. good morning. what's the latest? >> reporter: in its strongest language yet, mcdonald's is calling the raw slivered onions on the quarter pounder the, quote, likely source of this e. coli outbreak that the cdc says has sickened 75 people across 13 states. this after the colorado department of agriculture tested

fresh and frozen beef patties from multiple locations across the state, and all testing on the beef patties came back negative. as a result, mcdonald's shifting its focus seemingly entirely to california-based onion supplier taylor farms, who said in a statement on friday they're, quote, saddened by the outbreak and have issued a preemptive recall. mcdonald's now says it is bringing the quarter pounder back nationwide. noting it will just for now be served without onions in several states for the time being. mcdonald's president apologizing to customers and stressing the food currently served in their restaurants is safe. all of this comes as mcdonald's is facing mounting lawsuits tied to the outbreak, at least two filed so far, with one attorney telling me he's been retained by 31 families. hoda. >> all right. maggie, thanks. all right. getting to quarter after the hour. we've got craig here. good morning. >> good morning. good morning to you as well.

the opening weekend of the world series between the new york yankees and the los angeles dodgers over-delivered on drama. the dodgers striking first in l.a., winning both games, including that jaw-dropping walk-off grand slam. tonight the action moves back to the bronx. sam brock, he couldn't wait. he's already there for us this morning. he's at yankee stadium. hey, sam. >> reporter: craig, good morning. savannah, hoda, good morning. look, this place will be rocking tonight. the last time the yankees hosted a world series game was 2009, that was the inaugural year of the new yankees stadium and the 27th championship the team has won. now the dodgers coming to town up 2-0. their star mvp shohei ohtani expected to play after injuring his shoulder over the weekend, and coming off of the high of one of the most epic endings you will ever see to a major league baseball. the first two games of a dodgers/yankees world series have lived up to the hype and then some. >> cortez delivers. freeman hits the ball to right field.

she is gone! >> reporter: in game one, dodgers first baseman freddie freeman with a walk-off grand slam, the first in world series history. that moment reminiscent of the legendary walk-off homer gibson hit for the dodgers back in 1988. >> so the dodgers trying to catch lightning right now. >> reporter: both men playing on injured legs. >> high to right field. she is gone! >> reporter: freeman went on emergency leave this year when his 3-year-old son was hospitalized with a rare autoimmune disorder. now with his family healthy and in tow, including his father, freeman's emotions flowed. >> if he didn't love the game of baseball, i wouldn't be here, you know, playing this game. that's fred freeman right there. >> the yankees are feeling the head after squandering the lead. >> we won't flinch.

we have to keep at it. >> reporter: as shohei ohtani's injury in the game two win, now the main story line for the series, as the all-time talent suffered a partially dislocated shoulder. manager dave roberts said tests are still ongoing, but ohtani has good range of motion and strength. >> i just don't see him not playing game three. >> reporter: the series set for a trio of games in new york inside a 21st version of the house that ruth built, where the bronx bombers have 27 championships. but they will have to overcome the magic of the mighty dodgers and freddie freeman, whose grand slam ball sits in the hands of 10-year-old zachary. >> do you think you will remember this game with your mom and dad for the rest of your life? >> definitely. so far been the best day of my life by a long shot. >> reporter: now, zachary says there is like a 99% chance that he's going to be keeping that ball. he's going to try to get freddie

at the scene one of the victims was her coworker. the two car crash happened a little after midnight on highway 25, in bloomfield. according to a witness, a solo driver in each car died at the scene. witnesses also informed our crew one of the victims is a santa clara county emergency dispatcher. we have not received confirmation from the chp. the cause of the crash is not yet known. i'm kris sanchez in san jose. where is the first day on the job for the new san jose police chief? though it's not the first day with the department. paul joseph has been a member of the sfpd for 30 years. chief paul joseph was the acting chief for the last seven months. he has experience in homicide, robbery, patrol, narcotics and merge, which is san jose pd's version of swat. chief joseph says he's committed to maximizing what the department can do through technology and partnerships with community groups. and he's committed to transparency. let's get a look at the forecast for this monday morning with meteorologist kari hall. starting out with some clouds and cool temperatures. watching

this trial is still a year away. but what form of punishment bryan kohberger would ultimately face if convicted now a major point of contention, as the victims' families are left, yet again, waiting for answers. >> this is state v. kohberger. >> the legal team doubling down now on efforts to keep the death penalty off the table. >> i understand the stakes in this case are as high as they can possibly be. >> kohberger is charged with the murder of four university of idaho students, kaylee goncalves, ethan chapin, xana kernodle and madison mogen. they were stabbed to death in their off-campus home in november of 2022. a previous judge entered a not guilty plea on kohberger's behalf, but the case has been slow moving, with delays and a recent change of venue. >> your honor, bryan is innocent. >> kohberger's lawyers now arguing the methods of capitol

punishment in idaho, lethal injection and a firing squad would violate his constitutional right to be free of cruel and unusual punishment. writing in part that, quote, the evolving standards of society and the unusualness of the death penalty have changed. >> this is really a cultural attack, an attempt to change or evaluate societal norms within the legal system. ultimately, headed to the united states supreme court to ask for an entire review. >> reporter: state prosecutors pushing back, citing long established legal precedence supporting the death penalty and objecting to the defense team's offering experts at next week's hearing on capital punishment, including a forensic pathologist that worked on o.j. simpson's defense. >> i think the defense has a very tough factual case to argue that this is a circumstance for the death penalty, should not apply because this is a common garden variety, everyday murder, whatever that is. that's a pretty tough case. >> so what is the legal

>> it really is. so jada henderson grew up on the sidelines on nfl games. she never dreamed she would be able to combine her love of painting with the family business. thanks to boasting from her father and a lot of talent and hard work, she is helping players express themselves on the gridiron. whether you are a football super fan or just a sneaker head, you might have noticed lately many of your favorite nfl players have been stepping up their shoe game. some of the colorful cleats athletes are sporting are the work of 28-year-old jada henderson, who is bringing her creative touch to football fields across the league. do you still get excited every time you see your shoes on a field? >> yeah, yeah, for sure. we will be watching football on sunday, clicking around to different games. okay, i wonder if we can see if they're wearing them. >> the daughter of former nfl quarterback and coach john kitna, and now wife of an offensive lineman, football is in her dna, but art is her passion. >> did you imagine that football

would continue to be such a big part of your life? >> no, not at all. people are, like, what do you do? oh, i paint shoes. they look at you like, that's not a real job, is it? yeah, i know. >> henderson first started painting cleats in college while working in the equipment room at arizona state. but she says she owes her success in large part to her proud dad and dallas cowboys quarterback dak prescott. >> how did you first learn about jada's talent? her father, he told me his daughter was artistic. she had done shoes and cleats before. i was like, hey, i got a pair. might as well try them. >> 20 custom cleat collaborations later, prescott is one of her best customers and biggest fans. >> it shows how talented she is. to see how her platform was grown, it's awesome to see. >> since then, her business has exploded. demand for her colorful cleats

and souped-up sneakers is skyrocketing with a wait list about 400 people long. >> what did dak do for your career? >> it really was the jumping-off point for everything. like it was still kind of like a side hustle before that. and, obviously, if you do anything like that, it just takes off. my following had quadrupled overnight and i'm getting all these orders. so i just didn't anticipate really, you know, the reaction that i was going to get. >> when you saw the quarterback of the dallas cowboys wearing your cleats on an nfl field, how did you feel? >> oh, my gosh. those were just in my house like two days ago. whenever you see people wearing your stuff, you're, like, i made those. it's always exciting. >> henderson's creations have been worn by some of the biggest sports stars and celebs. but the cost is between $350 and $800, the same for everyone. >> these are completely hand painted with a brush. >> she spends anywhere from 6 to 28 hours working on her wearable
