teaming one her running mate tim walz. as we mentioned vice president harris is in michigan today and starting today votes in the critical battleground state are being counted. >> because of a new law allowing some michigan counties to begin processing absentee ballots. more than 1.7 million people in michigan have already voted either in person or by absentee ballots. >> shaquille brewster is in detroit for us, shaq, not every county in michigan is counting the votes early, right, so how did this all work? >> reporter: you mentioned that big number, 1.7 million people here in the state have already cast a ballot, 1.5 million of those who are people who voted by mail across the state and the new law allows clerks across the state the option to start processing those ballots.

>> the ballots are being cut open, the numbers on the ballots are being cross-checked with the numbers on the envelopes. if everything is squared away those ballots are placed into the tabulator. importantly we won't know the results until election night, but what this does is speeds up the process so on election night we can get those results reported more quickly. >> shaq, i can remember the scene where former president trump complained about michigan specifically and how long it took to get results in detroit last election, he falsely called the process corrupt, how confident are election officials that you're talking to about that new process? >> reporter: yeah, they were tense scenes where security had to be up. this process here in detroit will let them have results by the 11:00 news. listen to more of my

ballot dropboxes. voters registration sites. . the colorado intelligence agency made a specific notice of insider threats that could possibly be involved in election processes and that's troubling. as we know since january 6th we had a large push from election deniers to get involved with their elections, to become poll watchers, to get involved as election officials. that's a new threat in this whole -- >> insider, somebody works at the polling place. >> or somehow access it. >> can you put this in confection for us did we see this during the last presidential election. >> miracle that this bulletin exists in first place. up until 2020, january 5th, there were these signs online that extremists were getting

shows the man falling to the ground. only after the shooting that police finally were able to take him into custody, but that didn't happen until this morning. nbc news correspondent antonia hylton is following this story for us. it took four days to make this arrest, what did they say, what took them so long. >> reporter: many people in the community have been asking just that, and what the authorities there in minneapolis say is that sawchek has a history of mental illness, he had knowledge of explosive devices, there was concern about police officers descending on his property and there be a violent standoff. they waited for days to see if he would exit the home on his own. last night they took him into custody before they were going

to gas his home to draw him out. this shooting happened wednesday and it was not until late last night this happened. many people in the community have been outraged. >> we have heard from the man who was shot. video of him in the hospital. have we heard anything from the suspect. >> reporter: we haven't heard from the suspect but he's facing attempted murder charges, among other charges related to his harassment, the victim says that he called at least 19 times prior to the shooting to report threats, harassment, hate speech from his neighbor. and now, he's thankfully alive and in the hospital recovering, but is in a state of shock it got to this point. take a listen. >> i don't call the police. i called for my family to be safe. the bullet went down through my neck and all the way back to my

spine. >> reporter: he's very lucky to be alive frankly and people in the community now that the man is in custody are very eager to see him held accountable. we don't have information on a trail. but people in minneapolis area certainly want to see him held accountable to the full extent of the law, kate. >> we're talking about minneapolis a history of other incidents including george floyd that we think about, i wonder what the community reaction and the response has been to all of. >> pain and outrage. days-long delay and the logic of allowing him to stay inside his home as they waited to see if he would leave and then they could arrest him. while some people understand that, you know the police didn't want to get into an armed standoff with a person with a history of mental illness on the street, there's also the fear of someone who just allegedly shot someone their next-door neighbor

rammed their car into the store in the early morning hours, and the damage is pricey. nbc bay area's ginger conejero saab is in san francisco with the story. reporter well, fortunately, the would be burglars did not get away with any merchandise. also, fortunately, there were no reported injuries in this, but there was quite a bit of damage to this louis vuitton store here in union square. you can take a look behind us. there are still no doors at the store where they typically are. the store open later today, but much of the damage has already been cleaned up and things are back to usual now. it was a very different scene earlier this morning. take a look at this video. it shows how the would be burglars rammed a car into the store. sfpd says it happened around 415 this

morning. officers that were patrolling the area of union square observed a vehicle collide into the front doors of the louis vuitton store, but it was unable to break through. that is when multiple suspects left the car and got into two other vehicles waiting. both fled the scene. now, from what we understand, that car, that police car that was patrolling the area was just further down geary, and that accounts for the quick response that it had. and the ability to scare away those would be burglars. now, this happens not far from where another burglary at a high end retail store took place a couple weeks ago. officers in the area saw three vehicles recklessly driving away from the store. they attempted a traffic stop with one of those vehicles, but it did get away. no arrests have been made in that burglary and no arrests have been made in this morning's attempted burglary. as well. now we have reached out to union square alliance, who, from what we understand, may have some

surveillance video to this, but it is an active investigation. so they are not sharing that at this point. we do expect to hear from them at some point today. in san francisco, ginger conejero, saab, nbc, bay area news. thank you. ginger. the chp says two drivers died in an overnight crash. it happened on highway 25, in bloomfield, in gilroy. officials say one driver swerved into the opposite lanes, causing both cars to collide. the chp confirmed one of the drivers is a santa clara county 911 dispatcher named priscilla jones, and santa clara county officials say, quote, we are saddened by the loss of one of our valued staff members and our thoughts go out to her family and friends. the cause is under investigation. our ian cull is on this story. he'll have more in our afternoon newscast. cooler temperatures are headed our way. here's meteorologist kari hall with the details. it's going to be a cooler day as we look across the south bay. highs in the mid to upper 60s for the afternoon. a breezy wind and a mix of sun and clouds. we will

conveniences that technology provides, but when we're on the roads, we all have a duty to make sure our communities are safe. san mateo's police chief was also on hand to discuss ways for pedestrians to keep themselves safe. students and teachers back in the classrooms today at two schools on the peninsula. it comes after teachers from the las lomitas elementary school district in menlo park and atherton. it ended their strike over the weekend. educators from las lomitas education association, which covers schools in those two towns, hit the picket line last wednesday after nearly nine months of contract negotiations. classes at la entrada school and las lomitas elementary were both impacted by the strike. labor leaders say they reached a tentative agreement with the district over the weekend, and we've learned it includes wage increases and fully funded health benefits. that does it for this mr. clean magic eraser... wow - where has this been my entire life?

bottom of the hour now, here are some of stories making headlines on "nbc news daily." the u.s. navy is formally apologizing more than one hundred years after shelling a native village in alaska. sailers shelled a building of 120 people before burning what was left of homes, canoes. six kids were killed in that attack. the apology was issued during a ceremony on saturday, exactly

142 years after the incident. a financial settlement was reached back in 1973, but village leaders have sought an apology for decades. a new report from the w.h.o. said that new and existing vaccines could save over half a million lives globally. according to the w.h.o. nearly 5 million people died from antibiotic resistant infections in 2019. it occurs when bacteria and virus stop responding to antibiotic drugs. vaccinated people have fewer infections which protect them against those complications that lead to the overuse of the drugs. it's almost the most wonderful time of the year. for everybody here at rockefeller center that means picking out a new tree, this year's tree is from western massachusetts, it's the first tree selected from the state since 1959. the 74-foot, 11-ton spruce is set to be cut down next

thursday, and it will arrive at rockefeller center the following saturday. the tree will be decorated with the official tree lightning on wednesday, december 4th, which you can see on your local nbc stations. israel carried out its long-awaited retaliatory strikes on iran. hit military sites in response to iran's ballistic missile attack on israel earlier this month. notably israel didn't strike iran's nuclear or oil sites after facing intense pressure from the u.s. and others not to do so. meanwhile in israel on sunday, one person was killed and dozens injured when a truck rammed into a bus stop north of tel aviv. the victims were largely senior citizens. authorities are investigating the incident as a suspected terror attack. all of this as spy chiefs from the u.s. and israel reconvened if qatar today to negotiate a potential cease-fire in gaza. it's unclear if any progress was

made. let's bring in nbc news international correspondent matt bradley, joining us from beirut, lebanon. iranian officials seemed to be pretty measured to those strikes from israel over the weekend, they, quote, did limited damage, but iran supreme leader is using more charged language, could we see a response from iran to the israeli strike? >> reporter: kate that's the million-dollar question, that's going to determine where this goes from here, it's a very dangerous moment and every government in the middle east, with few exceptions, has condemned this retaliatory strike so the ball is in tehran court. the supreme leader said at one point that this the impact of this strike shouldn't be overstated or diminished or understated, i'm paraphrasing. . that israeli strike was calibrated to do enough to put

them on notice. at the same time, not inviting further retaliation that could break this out into a region-wide war, we haven't heard from the irans whether they intend to respond, it looks like for now the whole region is kind of out of the woods. >> israel is still continuing its assault on gaza, there's video that went viral of a 6-year-old girl carrying her sister after her sister was hit by a car, can you explain why that image has taken hold and why people are responding to it? >> reporter: yeah sh kate, if you're seeing that video it's so clear why made this such an impact, it's a very poignant snapshot of the plight of so many children in gaza strip. 6-year-old girl carrying her 5-year-old sister and she explains to nbc news what she was doing, she said she was
