the bay. here we go. wednesday morning. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. we're going to get a look at that commute with mike coming up in just a bit. but first let's start with the cold temperatures outside this morning. meteorologist kari hall is tracking that for us. that's not going anywhere. the next several days, we'll have a chilly start, and we're right now at 50 degrees in san mateo, while dublin is at 41. we've even seen 30s in the north bay, and it's also mostly clear for now. but clouds will start to move in over the next couple of hours. and walnut creek, we'll see those temperatures in the mid 50s at 10:00 and then low 60s for the early afternoon, making it up to about 64 in dublin, 68 in concord and 64 in novato today. our temperatures still much cooler than what we typically see for the end of october and into early november. we are going to see a slight warm up, but we will have some rain in between, so we'll talk about that. mike, you're saying for the drive, there's no
6:03 am
surprises right now? no surprises. that doesn't mean no traffic. it just means your usual backup here. expected for this wednesday at the bay bridge. a nice smooth flow approaching the area. it's 602. folks, we see that slowing down the east shore freeway in through richmond and now out of richmond for the bridge to san rafael west 580, a little build approaching the maze, coming into west 24, but no problems through the caldecott or even through walnut creek. the interchange is moving well. it's just highway four that shows that build traffic feeding in and out of contra costa county. a smooth flow of traffic through the tri-valley. look, the dublin interchange. no delays. a little slowing through. hayward, san leandro as well as north 101 through san jose. back to you. thanks, mike. well, turning now to decision 2024. and there is officially six days to go until election day. vice president kamala harris delivered a message to tens of thousands of people in the same place where former president trump rallied supporters before the january 6th insurrection on the capitol. meantime, former president himself donald trump courted latino voters in pennsylvania
6:04 am
today in the bay's alice barr. live in washington this morning. and alice, a lot of back and forth right now, marcus. a lot of back and forth across the country. a lot of back and forth rhetorically. and here in washington, just outside the white house before some 60,000 people. that's according to a federal law enforcement official. vice president harris, last night paired her economic pitch with attacks on former president trump as he rallied in pennsylvania and responded to new comments from president biden. and i did this work in the final days of the presidential campaign. dueling speeches former president trump rallying supporters in pennsylvania. i'll protect our jobs. i will protect our borders. i will protect our families. as vice president, harris delivered her closing argument. i pledge to seek common ground and common sense solutions. speaking from the same spot where former president trump rallied supporters before
6:05 am
the january 6th capitol attack, she warned a second trump term would bring more serious consequences. this is someone who is unstable, obsessed with revenge, consumed with grievance and out for unchecked power. the former president, meanwhile, seized on comments from president biden, talking by zoom with a latino group about a comedian's racist joke at the trump madison square garden rally sunday, calling puerto rico a floating island of garbage. the only garbage i see floating out there is your supporters. remember hillary? she said. deplorable. that didn't work out. garbage, i think, is worse, right? president biden later clarifying that he was referring to the, quote, hateful rhetoric about puerto rico spewed by trump supporter at his madison square garden rally. the trump campaign says the comedian's comments don't reflect mr. trump's views. probably he shouldn't have been there. yeah. all as vice president, harris seeks to cast herself as a unifier, arguing
6:06 am
that former president trump calls those who disagree with him the enemy. while i'll give them a seat at the table, contrasting visions in a race down to the wire. vice president harris also laid out her policy priorities in that speech. from making groceries, housing and childcare more affordable to restoring reproductive rights. tonight, both nominees have big events in wisconsin with packers legend brett favre set to join former president trump in green bay. marcus. so it continues. alice barr in washington for us this morning. thank you alice. and there are several key races on the ballot right here in the bay area. and we've got you covered. we're helping you stay informed. all you have to do is scan the qr code there on your screen. it's going to take you to our full voter guide with info on all those races and polling locations. 606 right now, take a look at this. gilroy police need your help this morning. they are looking for this man. investigators believe
6:07 am
he was filming inside the stalls of a woman's restroom at the target store on camino arroyo. officers say there's at least one victim, but there could be more. if you recognize this man, contact gilroy police. well, later this morning, the high profile murder trial of nima momeni is set to resume maher many accused of killing cash app founder bob lee today in the bay's ginger conejero saab joins us live in san francisco. this morning. she's been following the case for us quite extensively, so much going on in regards to the testimony from so many sister. that's right laura. and that is expected to continue. we're still very early on in this case. she is only the third witness so far for the prosecution. but because amit zenni, the sister of nima momeni, is possibly the key witness to this case now because she is expected back in court later this morning for the fifth day, that she is testifying. the last time that she took the stand, much of the questioning
6:08 am
centered around her drug use and lack of sleep in the days leading up to the day, bob lee was fatally stabbed. we spoke with legal analysts steven clark last week. he has been following this case as well. casarez testimony, he says at times, has hurt both sides of the case. it will be difficult for this jury to unpack. cazares testimony because it's not likely that they'll pick and choose what they want to believe. they may disregard the entire testimony, and that's something the prosecutors may argue later. now, prosecutors pushed keana, saying she seemed to recall more details in questioning by the defense. now, the defense argued, they provided specific texts and phone records with timestamps to help refresh her memory. the defense has also claimed that nima momeni killed the cash app founder in self-defense. after lee pulled a knife in a drug fueled haze. prosecutors, however, argue his motive for killing lee was
6:09 am
related to something that happened to casar. she can go. well, testimony got tense, even combative at times last week, spilling over outside the courtroom where bob lee's former wife, crystal lee, could not contain her emotions. knowing it was her former husband who was the victim and not casar, who alleges that lee's family attempted to intimidate her through texts after lee's death. now this has all happened with some of the court's own chaos as a backdrop. there was a one day strike from san francisco court clerks last week that ended up in a recess or in a postponement of thursday's hearing. friday was off. monday and tuesday were already off on the calendars. laura. so we're back in court today, with the trial set to resume at 930 in san francisco, ginger conejero saab today in the bay, all right. up to jurors there to keep it all straight now. thank you. ginger. well,
6:10 am
later today, a new fire station opens in the south bay. it's located in redwood estates, just outside of los gatos and the santa cruz mountains. this is along madrone drive. it will serve people along the highway. 17 corridor. santa clara county fire says that the new station provides enhanced safety for first responders, and it features a climate controlled turnaround room as well as a decontamination shower. the grand opening ceremony is scheduled for 1130 this morning. now, of course, this all comes as there was a small fire along highway 17 over the weekend. this was near glenwood drive in the south bay. those flames triggering evacuations before crews were able to contain it. there's no word on what sparked that fire. it is 610 on your wednesday morning. taking a peek outside, waiting for the sun's arrival. this is in the east bay overlooking walnut creek. kari has got a look at our temperatures. i noticed it was a little cooler. at least it felt that way this morning. yeah, and i think it will be like this over the next few days as we get
6:11 am
more clouds coming in tomorrow. we'll even start out tomorrow morning with some early morning rain. most of the north bay will see rain chances beginning tonight, but don't worry, this is all drying out. moving out of here in time for your halloween evening. and then the weekend. we'll have another chance of rain coming in mainly early saturday morning. so this is the first system that's arriving with some spotty showers already seeing some sprinkles in parts of the coastal north bay, and so that will continue to fall apart as it moves in. better chance of rain coming in later on this overnight into early tomorrow morning, and then starting to clear out by late tomorrow morning into the afternoon. we'll be tracking this in the next system behind it. i'll have details coming up. mike has a look at where you can fill up for a little bit less. yeah. new option for your best gas price. although it's the same low in concord. we'll start with the same lowest number as yesterday. 369. but a new shot pops up with that price. clayton gas and wash on clayton road in concord.
6:12 am
we're looking at another chance for a pre rain wash. this is cupertino car wash on north deanza boulevard where gas is 3.95. that's the best for the south bay and a quick check in san francisco. the bottom number here is 419. the best. it double time and 711 on mission street. you can get your best prices or find out where you need to go. maybe nearby gasbuddy.com. let's get a look at the roadways. a smooth flow of traffic this wednesday. no real surprises except for vasco. i did notice the travel time southbound is showing a lot more slowing, so the travel time is close to 40 minutes. that's quite a jump. we usually see it just about a half hour at this time, so plan on a little delay there. i'll track. i'll monitor for any issues. back to you. thanks, mike. 612 for you this morning. some good news for residents trying to make it in the bay next year. a look at new affordable housing community set to open in the south bay. meantime, elon musk says america will have to go through some tough times if he's put in charge of the budget. let's go out to the futures this morning, see what wall street's thinking. looks like it's going
6:13 am
to be a bit of a quiet open, slightly to the negative. plus, could you imagine not ever going trick or treating on halloween? that's actually the reality in one iowa town until now. we're going to tell you the unusual customs that kids have been taking part in there for decades, and the changes which will soon bring the little ghosts and ghouls out on halloween night. you're watching today in the bay.

this week from consumer confidence, which is up to the jobs number on friday. meta and microsoft report profits today. san francisco's south san francisco's visa says it will lay off 1000 people, yet hire two, ending up with the same number of people in the end. the social network reddit says it turned a profit. video here from their ipo last spring. that guy's name is snoo. what's new? well, what's new is reddit made a profit? shares up 25% in pre trading. elon musk warning that america will have to go through some tough times if he's put in charge of the federal budget. trump asked musk to run a department of government efficiency in his next administration. musk says his budget cuts will cause, quote, temporary hardship. musk has said he wants to cut 2 trillion
6:17 am
from the federal budget. now, mathematically, that would have to include portions of social security, medicare and defense. former trump aide steve bannon, fresh out of prison, spoke about musk at a press conference yesterday. elon musk, as you know, tulsi gabbard was a democrat. robert f kennedy jr was a democrat. elon musk was a very progressive democrat. they've all become awakened by the maga movement today. i think he's one of the strongest supporters of the maga movement. he's gone through a awakening that i think very few have come. apple introduced another computer tuesday, the second so far this week. the newest is a mac mini and it is really mini. here's a picture of it sitting on a desk. it is tiny, just five by five inches, so it will fit in most people's hands. also not very expensive for a mac $600. now the only complaint people have you can't see the power button in this picture because it's on the bottom back side of
6:18 am
the underneath the computer. yes, exactly. meaning you would have to reach over, push aside the cables, get out, tilt it forward and underneath. yeah, underneath. underneath. yeah. or just don't bother. but that was it that we saw in the picture. well yeah. the screen. yeah. but the tiny, tiny little thing on the desk. yes. i mean, it's this big and it's a powerful mac computer. it's amazing how things have changed. yes. come a long way that we have. all right. thanks, guys. whoo! making it in the bay is getting a little bit easier for dozens of people over in mountain view. later this morning, leaders in the south bay will celebrate the opening of a new affordable housing complex. it's located. it's located along the el camino mountain view, along with santa clara county and the nonprofit jamboree housing corporation converted the old crestview hotel into what is now the hartwood apartments. that project is mostly funded by the state's homekey program. yankees fans this morning saying, not so
6:19 am
fast because the world series is not over just yet. we have a live look at yankee stadium this morning, where the dodgers and yankees will be back at it for game five tonight. the yankees still have to steal three more games to make baseball history. speaking of which one fan did you see this going viral this morning for an attempted theft? look at him there. yeah. after mookie betts snared a foul ball. foul ball? the fan tried to pry it out of his glove. yeah, not for long, though, buddy. he was ejected from the stadium for fan interference. in the meantime, the yankees rolled on, led by hometown hero anthony volpe's. grand slam. yankees won it 11 to 4. made a comeback there. well, trending this morning, kids in des moines, iowa will get to do something for the first time tomorrow that they haven't been able to do in 86 years. i can't believe that. 86 years. that means we would have missed out as kids. all right, well, they will get to go trick or treating
6:20 am
on halloween. take a look at this. so since 1938, children have had to go door to door on what's known as beggars night. it's typically held the day before halloween. according to state historical society of iow, des moines enacted that tradition more than seven decades ago in order to crack down on halloween vandalism. but a storm forecast for tonight means beggars night is now coinciding with halloween. and here's something interesting here when kids go door to door in des moines, they don't say trick or treat to get the candy. instead, they have to tell a joke. which is funny, right? hopefully. did you hear one the about four people walked into a newsroom? that's it. they walked into a newsroom. ha ha. candy, please. oh, i don't know. didn't say it had to be funny. it just said you had to tell a joke for a halloween's to work on it. all right, well, the ghoul little goblins are getting ready for
6:21 am
halloween, and we're going to have rain, but it shouldn't interfere with trick or treating. right. so it's coming in, and it's out of here before you head out. trick or treating tomorrow night. let's get a look at our forecast and what to expect. may even see a little bit of fog rolling by. it looks like it's going to be also a nice evening for those trick or treating treaters, but partly cloudy. a look at san francisco, where we're going to hold those temperatures steady at right about 60 degrees throughout the day tomorrow. and then cooling down into the mid 50s. so you might want to make sure you have extra layers. and for parts of the bay we're going to see those highs in the mid 60s during the middle of the day partly cloudy. and then right at the time that more kids are heading out, it will be in the upper 50s and for the inland areas, partly cloudy. and at 7:00 about 60 degrees. so nice weather despite the rain that's going to be coming in. and most of it arriving later on during the overnight hours into early tomorrow. we're already starting to see some clouds coming in, and our hour by hour
6:22 am
outlook shows that first thing tomorrow morning, some spotty showers will be coming in. there may be some pockets of some heavier rain in the north bay. and then as we go into the 10 to 11:00 hour, the sky is already starting to clear and we have the possibility of getting about a 10th of an inch of rain from san francisco on northward for the east bay peninsula. south bay, it's a few hundredths of an inch of rain, and it's been really exciting to watch the possibility of snow in the sierra this weekend. but now models are backing off a little bit on how much we'll see maybe 1 to 5in and some of the higher elevations will see higher snowfall totals. and then looking ahead to next week, a bit of a warm up for the first week of november. instead of seeing 60s like we're seeing this week in walnut creek, we'll see low to mid 70s. and as we get into that forecast, we're also going to go back to sunshine. the most unsettled weather will be late tonight and then again on saturday morning. mike, you were tracking a crash
6:23 am
on the bay bridge that reported as you get into the city, right near the fremont street exit, you see the traffic moving smoothly on the san francisco approach off the bay bridge. sensors may slow a bit as folks pass past the crash, or maybe they've cleared it by now. we do see your typical east bay build, and there are two crashes around san pablo. one is your commute direction on the shoulder, the other is opposite the commute. everything else is moving very smoothly. we'll have more news, weather and of course traffic

some say it's impossible to fix san francisco. they also said you couldn't escape from alcatraz. but watch me do both. other candidates want to tear down san francisco, but i'll build on what's already great to make it even better. with expanded rent control, new homes for the middle class community policing to reduce crime, and an inspector general to root out corruption. let's get to work. paid for by aaron peskin for mayor 2024. financial disclosures are available at sfethics.org

mayor announcing plans for a union square intended to draw people in, but keeping those robbers out. well, today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us with some of the preparations for the holiday season. there's a lot of traditions for families to go to the city, have fun. but there's concerns these days, no question. i mean, we like to see the holiday lights. we like to kind of shop in community, even if we're shopping small. but the plan is to take on safety from several different angles. things that you may not notice as you're out shopping and things that you will. let's start there. these are planters then. they are about more than beautifying the sidewalk. they're meant to make it harder for smash and grab robbers, to use cars to crash into businesses. those planters, along with bollards, or those little short poles that you see in the ground, sometimes those will encroach on the sidewalk and thus require city permit. mayor london breed announced the plan in front of the louis vuitton store, which was rammed just on monday, saying she will push for a streamlined permit process. all right. so let's talk about the things that you may not notice. san francisco
6:47 am
police say they will continue to patrol 24/7 there at union square. but there will also be undercover officers among the shoppers. and the sfpd will use license plate readers and even drones to maximize their law enforcement reach. merchants and shoppers we talked with are on board. downtown union square, in particular, is extraordinarily important to the overall health and well-being of our community and our city as a whole. if union square is doing well, the rest of our city is doing well. it's unfortunate that we have to go to those extremes in san francisco to be able to shop, but the impact on the crime is, is, is, is destroying the downtown of san francisco. so just two weeks ago, california attorney general rob bonta sent a bulletin to all law enforcement, including here in the bay area, reminding them of ten new retail crime laws aimed at cracking down on smash and grab robberies, making it easier to charge repeat shoplifters and punishing people who are reselling those stolen goods. the issue here is that nine of the ten do not go into effect
6:48 am
until january, which is, of course, after the holiday rush. what is happening before the holiday season is election day, and california voters have a chance to decide proposition 36. this is a measure on your ballot that would allow some felony charges for thefts under $950. this could also increase sentences for some theft and drug crimes. now, opponents say this will divert funding away from treatment and toward prisons. so california voters will have that to decide as we look ahead toward, you know, what's going to happen with our holiday season, because you want to feel safe. you do. absolutely. you want to build those traditions, right? exactly. and do it safely. all right. thanks, chris. well, new at 6:00 today. show's savannah guthrie sitting down with oscar winning a-list actor tom hanks. he stars in the new movie here. it looks at one home, which is inhabited by many different people over several generations. in the film, hanks is reunited with his forrest gump costar
6:49 am
robin wright. the movie also utilizes ai to portray the. the actor younger, but he says that was only half the battle. i'm going to tell you right now, savannah, there is a way a 17 year old leaps up off the couch in excitement that is very hard for a 67 year old man to recreate. hanks and guthrie also share a special bond. both have held events together to benefit military caregivers. you can watch the full interview, including which iconic movie lines hanks says he hears most often from fans and why he doesn't mind. tune in to today. it's all at 7:00 right after today in the bay. he's a great actor. yeah he is. well, trending this morning. if you need something to get you into that halloween spirit, you might want to hop on bart tonight. it's a bart is encouraging riders to dress up in transit themed costumes in exchange for bart anime swag. oh, yes. yeah, that's bart anime swag out there. transit agency actually has four anime mascots. you can see them right there on your
6:50 am
screen tonight. you can get a free bart and a makeup sleeve. this is with the purchase of a boba tea at the yi fang taiwan fruit tea location near the colma bart station. the bart commissioned local artists to create those mascots. a couple of years ago ago, they also already generated tens of thousands of dollars from the merchandise sales. the train systems in taiwan and japan, they do this, and it's a huge success. so we knew there was already a model out there. and anime is so popular in the bay area, especially with young people getting on that bart train when you costume. so the free anime cup sleeve with boba tea purchase are available between 5 and 7 tonight. customers earn extra swag of course. bart says that colma is the perfect location there for the free halloween celebration, because there are so many cemeteries over there. you heard that slogan, colma. people are dying to get here. yes. my dad says that when we cross any.
6:51 am
yeah. every time. every time. all right, let's get a look at the forecast. halloween. just around the corner tomorrow. i can't believe it. yeah, a little bit of a spooky sunrise that we have over the bay area right now. and also chilly temperatures. let's get a look at oakland this morning as you're getting ready to head out. going to work this morning. it's in the mid 50s now and will be mostly cloudy through about 9:00. and then the rest of the day a mix of sun and clouds but temperatures staying cool here as we zoom into the south bay. we're going to see a high of about 66. so even though we're starting out with long sleeves and lots of layers, today it's going to be very comfortable for the afternoon and a lot of sunshine for the east bay. 64 from hayward to oakland up to vallejo as well, and parts of the tri-valley and low 60s near the coast into san francisco. downtown, we'll see a high of 63 and 64 in novato, while sonoma will reach a high of 66 degrees later tonight. rain will be coming in, and it looks to be a
6:52 am
fairly quick mover. so we're seeing during the three to four o'clock hours tomorrow morning, some rain passing and then by 10:00 we're back to the sunshine and the rest of our halloween is going to be pretty nice. another round of rain coming in late friday night. keep that in mind if you're going out to some parties this weekend that it will be raining late in the north bay and into the rest of the bay area through saturday morning. so our estimated rain that we're expecting is about a 10th of an inch, so that's enough to turn off the sprinklers and it will wet the lawn. but for some other areas. and to the east bay, if you do get some rain, it's only expected to be a few hundredths of an inch, but there will be another chance of rain on saturday. and then on sunday morning as we wake up, it'll already be daylight outside as we fall back and we're going to have some slightly warmer temperatures for early next week, but our mornings will still be chilly and our halloween forecast is looking good. we'll get that rain in and out of here before the trick or treaters hit the streets. and

mike, you're updating the situation now on the bay bridge. yeah. the issue is we talked about the crash west 80. the bay bridge at fremont. but we saw the traffic flowing smoothly on the san francisco side. there was indeed a second crash around the center anchorage area. both are being addressed by bridge crews, so we should see a smoother flow as we do on the bridge span itself. the good news is, despite the issues on the bay bridge that were causing the slowdown, we still have metering lights moving well enough that you can see movement over on the oakland side. still, add a little bit of time out of the east bay and over toward the city on the on the south bay bridge. smooth drive for richmond and san mateo bridge. holding steady. back to you. thanks so much, mike. 652. happening now. city leaders in oakland are working to crack down on illegal dumping. it all comes as video is going viral of a man who recorded stacks of tires in the fruitvale neighborhood. it happened last week features an exchange with a person allegedly responsible for causing the sidewalk nuisance. the city has to buy 60 additional surveillance cameras in so-called hotspots. the
