not be there. >> and president biden making headlines this morning for his comments about trump supporters appearing to refer to them as garbage, before attempting to clear up his comments. including a closer look at the latest numbers on the economy and inflation and how they may influence voters. let's get started. nbc's peter alexander, in milwaukee, battleground, wisconsin. good morning, peter. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. we were there last night. it was an enormous crowd. a law enforcement official estimating 60,000 people. the harris campaign saying 75,000. either way, it was the largest of her campaign. harris speaking, as you noted, with the white house as the backdrop, the same location where donald trump urged his supporters to the capitol. ahead of that riot. but it is that unforced error that is threatening to undercut part of her message. vice president harris delivering

supporters as singular, as if to refer to the comedian. later in the evening, the president writing on social media, i referred to the hateful rhetoric about puerto rico spewed by trump's supporter at his madison square garden rally as garbage, which is the only word i can think of to describe it. he's demonization of latinos is unconscionable. that's all i meant to say. it comes as trump is still battling his own political firestorm over the comments. his campaign concerned they could hurt him with latino voters, no longer shrugging them off. >> i don't want anybody making nasty jokes, stupid jokes. he probably should have been there, yeah. >> reporter: meanwhile, nikki haley sharply criticizing the rally. >> they need to do and tell puerto ricans how much they do value them. but they need to look at how they're talking about women. that is not the way to win women. that is not the way to win people who are concerned about

trump's self. >> let's go back to those comments by president biden. vice president harris already put some distance between her and president biden. she's been trying to do that. does this ratchet that up even more? >> reporter: savannah, president biden has played a limited role in the harris campaign, going to one event in the last 100 days. notably he was not there last night, even though this massive event was literally right behind the white house. we heard from tim walz. he said, i think president biden was speaking out about the rhetoric that we heard. he said harris' speech was about the best of america. president biden recently sparked criticism referring to trump saying that he should be locked up before clarifying he should be locked up politically. the bottom line here, as one harris aide told nbc news overnight, president biden's comments, what we heard from him

shiny. things look like they're going in the right direction. >> and consumers are saying they are feeling more upbeat about jobs, the stock market. you look at this particular survey and it shows consumers are feeling better about things here coming into autumn. you look at the backdrop. you have a stock market near record highs. if you own a home, you're sitting on a lot of equity because the home market has been high. and the job market has been pretty resilient for the last couple years. that's something folks can feel. wages are rising more than inflation has been going on for more than a year and a half. that's starting to have consumers feel better. and they're seeing sales everywhere, too, right? they're starting to see some relief in their pocketbooks. >> it seems like inflation has come down. it is closer to where it's meant to be. let's talk about this political disconnect. people put the economy as one of their top issues, but people are disaffected by it. >> they really are. inflation is coming in the right direction. mortgage rates are coming down.

interest rates are coming down. the stock market at record highs. all these top line numbers are very, very good. but there are pain points for families. and i have been covering a lot of this in these swing states. child care, housing. if you don't own the home, housing is a real problem right now. a lot of millennial families are locked out of the market. there are these pain points, child care, elder care, insurance costs. these are things that are kind of non-negotiable for a lot of families. that's why there is an overhang on how people feel about the economy. you have the top line numbers pretty good. the economy is pretty durable. you know, "the economist" magazine did a whole envy of the world, the u.s. is the envy of the world. the u.s. has the strongest economy in the world. but look at how people say they feel about the economy, and sometimes they don't feel that way. >> christine, very interesting. thank you. the man who attacked the husband of former house speaker nancy pelosi with a hammer in his home was sentenced yesterday

one round from his balcony on the 33rd floor. this morning in atlanta, a man is in police custody after authorities say he opened fire inside and from the balcony of his luxury high-rise apartment. that apartment located above the four seasons hotel in midtown. >> do you see him? >> this video appears to show the suspect throwing objects from the 33rd floor. >> he's got a mask on. >> before allegedly grabbing a gun and beginning to shoot. >> we did see at least one weapon thrown off of the balcony. >> reporter: police first received the call for a mental health emergency in the hotel's private condos. >> the officers arrived. we learned the individual may have had a handgun at the time he was involved in an altercation at the four seasons. >> reporter: authorities say they attempted to negotiate with the suspect and learned he may have had other weapons, including a handgun, shotgun and

rifle. >> the vast majority of those rounds were fired through walls and at least one round was fired from the balcony. >> reporter: this video shows the suspect wearing a gas mask and waiving two american flags from the window. authorities ultimately arrested 70-year-old jay stevens berger who was hospitalized and larger charged with aggravated assault. one police officer also suffered nonlife threatening injuries. >> he did wave his hands to give up. >> reporter: and the four seasons hotel telling nbc news overnight that it doesn't manage those private residences above the hotel, adding in a statement, quote, we're truly grateful for the swift response from the atlanta police department. as always, the safety and security of our guests and employees is a top priority. craig? >> thank you. firefighters in colorado were working around the clock to get a handle on that wildfire

where the murder trial of nima momeni, the man accused of killing cash app founder bob lee, will resume today. his sister, kawsar momani, is expected to take the stand for a fifth day in a row. she is viewed as a key witness for both prosecutors and defense attorneys. trial begins at 930 this morning. new calls for action along a stretch of south bay highway, where an emergency dispatcher recently died in a head on crash. it happened early monday morning on highway 25 near gilroy. friends of 35 year old priscilla jones are now demanding immediate improvements, including a new median rail, which they say already exists on the same highway in neighboring san benito county. they've organized an online petition and hope to kick start a new push to widen the highway to four lanes. let's get a look at our forecast for this wednesday morning with meteorologist kari hall. it's a chilly one out there. we've seen it even colder than yesterday with some upper 30s and low 40s. as you get ready to head out and

marcus washington. hundreds of striking hotel workers are organizing a march today in downtown san francisco. the first walked off the job last month, shortly after the previous contract expired. servers, bartenders, housekeepers, as well as bellhops who work at five of the major downtown hotels, say that talks are at a standstill. hilton responded by saying that they are committed to good faith negotiations. hyatt saying that it has a history of fair wages and benefits. that march is scheduled to start around 4 p.m. south bay leaders say they are taking a bold new step in developing the state of the art transit village as bart expands into san jose, santa clara valley transit authority later this morning is announcing a new funding for more than a dozen groups of organizations. all are helping the agency focus on the new transit based communities and neighborhoods surrounding south bay's busiest hubs. the
