>> we'll let you know what we will be this year. of course, that's a little later this morning. meanwhile, we are just five days away from the election. former president trump and vice president harris campaigning in the battleground state of wisconsin last night. trump trying to capitalize off of president biden's garbage gaffe wearing an orange safety vest on stage. >> today both candidates are heading to the southwest for those crucial states, arizona and nevada. trump adding a new stop in new mexico. >> there's another map we're also keeping an eye on, of course though. here we go. record-high halloween temps across much of the season. country. in dozens of cities, this last day of october will feel a lot more like summer. >> that's where we'll start. al's got the forecast, but first, nbc's jesse kirsch is salem, massachusetts. the temperatures there going to hit the high 70s. hey, jesse. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. if christmas has the north pole, halloween has salem, massachusetts. this is the home to those infamous witch trials you might

remember from history class. and this is associated with all of that. this year, salem is literally a hot halloween destination with temperatures climbing toward 80 degrees, and this is far from the only place that's heating up for the holiday. trick-or-treaters could face spooky heat with one of the hottest halloweens on record for parts of the country. >> when i was a kid, we had to wear winter coats because it was going to snow on halloween. >> reporter: dozens of cities expecting above average temperatures with places like hartford and pittsburgh poised to smash records today with summer-like heat. for some, the spooky, warm weather a welcome surprise meaning there's no need to layer up under those costumes. >> i wore shorts this year. so that was nice. >> reporter: in new york city, organizers of the annual village halloween parade, the nation's largest say the unusual warmth could draw even bigger crowds. meanwhile, as halloween tourists flock to salem, massachusetts, home of the infamous 17th century witch trials, two brush fires are burning and impacting

air quality. >> this is the first morning we haven't had smoke since saturday. so we are very happy about that, and halloween shall go off. >> reporter: city officials say salem is on track to break visitor records this year. >> it's hot, so i feel like i'm home in jacksonville right now. >> reporter: with temperatures expected to climb to 78 degrees here today -- >> it's good for trick-or-treating and stuff. >> reporter: monsters and ghosts of all ages are getting ready for some spooky halloween fun. here's something that's been worrying me. when i was a kid, we would take pillow case and fill that with the candy. i think all the chocolate would melt because of the heat. here's the solution. still have your costume, go to door and say trick or treat. instead of taking out the pillow case, why not bring a cooler. i've got the ice packs. i got some chocolate. we need some more. i know you can send me some, maybe. back to you. happily halloween. >> guy is prepared. >> that's one solution. thank you. >> all right. >> reporter: need more candy, though.

>> it's not warm. it's hot in a lot of places, al. >> make sure the little trick or treaters hydrate as they're walking around. it will be warm out there. big area of high pressure off the east coast. cold front approaching. that's going to pump up that warm, humid air. syracuse today 79 degrees. probably break the record of 75. pittsburgh, 79 degrees. same in elkins. portland, 73 degrees. new york city, we're going to come close to 80 degrees. we'll see what happens. then the system moves through. starts to push through. one more day of warm temperatures from augusta, maine, all the way down to annapolis, maryland, where they'll be 15 degrees above average and then boom, temperatures drop in buffalo, pittsburgh, indianapolis, bangor by monday. this is the front that's bringing the warm hair ahead of it and colder air. mixed snow up through southern minnesota. a storm hazard from louisville down to shreveport. we could see wind gusts of 60 miles per hour. the rain threat that's the

biggest thing we have to look for, especially down to the south. anywhere 1 to 3 inches of rain. guys? >> all right, al. thank you so much. we'll check back in a bit. let's turn to the countdown to election day. vice president harris and former president trump criss-crossing the swing states. trump riding to his wisconsin rally in a garbage truck capitalizing on joe biden's gaffe that began with a racist joke. and kamala harris wants to spread her message of unity. we have coverage with just five days to go. we start out with garrett haake. hey, garrett. good morning. >> reporter: hey, hoda. good morning to you, and yeah. the trump campaign saw that comment from president biden appearing to compare their supporters to garbage as a political gift, that they were determined to keep into the headlines. so determined, in fact, they had trump hop into a waiting garbage truck when he arrived here in wisconsin yesterday. now the harris campaign sees all of this as a distraction and a stunt that they don't think will be on the mind of voters as they make their final choices. with just five days to go, vice

president harris and former president trump both urging voters to help write a new chapter in american history. >> we have an opportunity in this election to turn the page on a decade of donald trump trying to keep us divided and afraid of each other. >> we can turn the page forever on this failed and corrupt administration. >> reporter: trump leaning into president biden's garbage comments, posing in a garbage truck. >> how do you like my garbage truck? >> reporter: and attacking joe biden and harris' supporters. >> crooked joe biden finally said what he and kamala really think of our supporters. he called them garbage. my supporters are far higher quality than crooked joe or lying kamala. you can't lead america if you don't love americans. >> reporter: the controversy began with this offensive remark by a comedian at trump's madison square garden rally on sunday. >> there's literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. yeah.

i think it's called puerto rico? >> reporter: president biden responding tuesday on a video call with latino groups. the only garbage i see floating out there is his supporters, his demonization is unconscionable. >> reporter: the president later saying he was only referring to the comedian. harris quickly distancing herself from the comment. >> i strongly disagree with any criticism of people based on who they vote for. >> reporter: democrats pointing to years of incendiary rhetoric from the former president, demonizing his political critics. >> they are indeed the enemy from within. >> reporter: trump who faces a potentially historic gender gap at the polls, closing his rally last night with this message to women. >> i want to protect the women of our country. i want to protect the women -- sir, please don't say that. why? they said, we think it's -- we think it's very inappropriate for you to say. i said, well, i'm going to do it whether the women like it or not. >> reporter: the harris campaign pouncing on those comments immediately with the vice

president writing on social media, quote, trump thinks he should get to make decisions about what you do with your body, whether you like it or not, blasting out video of a moment that they hope to make go viral as both campaigns today head west. hoda? >> all right, garrett haake for us. thank you, garrett. >> as this campaign winds down, misinformation spread online is ramping up and making it hard for voters to know what's actually real. nbc's ryan nobles joins us now. been taking a closer look at that story, ryan. good morning. >> reporter: yeah, savannah, good morning. this can be scary. we're actually already seeing examples of foreign adversaries using fake videos, news stories and social media posts as a way to disrupt the election process. it has the potential to be the biggest threat to the peaceful transfer of power. a flood of false information about the election shared on the internet. already in pennsylvania, a viral video claimed to show illegal harvesting of ballots in northampton county.

it was actually just a postal worker delivering ballots to the elections office. former president trump has been without evidence, alleging fraud in the key state of pennsylvania, where polls are tied. officials there reassuring the public. >> nonpartisan election officials are doing their jobs across pennsylvania, and they're working very hard to ensure we have free, fair, safe, and secure elections. >> reporter: earlier this month, the fbi believes a group of russian actors built a fake video that made it look like trump mail-in ballots were getting destroyed. in 2020, the internet was filled with inaccurate claims of the arizona vote-counting process. in 2024, secretary of state created a deep video fake of himself to demonstrate the internet can't always be trusted. his team is also showing voters how their process works to prevent the spread of conspiracy theories. >> i think the bad guys want us to disbelieve one another. >> reporter: the cybersecurity infrastructure security agency has warned that foreign

adversaries are amplifying the false videos and claims, but says so far they have seen no evidence they've hacked into election infrastructure. tom costello spoke to the agency's director. >> whoever you vote for, you can have confidence that your vote will be counted as cast. >> reporter: it is easy to spread the false information, and much more difficult to rein it in, especially with artificial intelligence making it easier to create fake videos that look real. it would allow you to take a video of this like me which looks real or like me here in this bed or sitting cross-legged on a yoga mat. that video was generated by a computer program. a big part of the challenge, not only for elections officials, but voters as well. in a race that is expected to be extraordinarily close. and i promise, this is the real me talking now. this could be a problem beyond election day. remember, we still need to count

the votes and the validity and the integrity of that process will play a big role in the transition, and there are real fears that the internet may be used to make it look like the election was not conducted fairly, which could eventually threaten the peaceful transfer of power. savannah? >> that's so serious. ryan, thank you very much. in the meantime, an emergency hearing tied to the election is playing out in philadelphia today. a judge set to address a bid by the city's district attorney to stop elon musk and his america pac from continuing to award million dollar prizes to registered voters in battleground states. i want to turn to nbc's senior legal correspondent laura jarrett for this. the department of justice had issued a letter basically a shot across the bow, this is dangerous, legal territory. but this is different. this is the d.a. in philadelphia filing a lawsuit. >> yes. that would have been a criminal case. this is a civil case. the justice department is worried about paying people to register to vote. that could be a violation -- potential violation of federal law. the philly d.a. is worried about operating an illegal scheme for a lottery. remember this was a million dollar give away. you had to be registered to vote

in those battleground states. he wasn't paying people cash outright. they had to sign a pledge, and that's what made it a little bit different, and that's what the hearing today is about. trying to get him to stop. that's what the d.a. wants to do. obviously the world's richest man, he could pay a fine, but the philly d.a. is trying to get him to stop. the judge will be questioning both sides of that. the big question is whether he shows up at all. >> did the judge say elon musk himself has to show up, and what if he doesn't? >> the judge's order says all parties must be present. in civil cases you don't have to come to just any old hearing like that, generally. >> your lawyer has to come. >> exactly. that's the open question. we reached out to musk and his lawyers and we did not receive any comment back. >> we'll be watching. laura, thank you. >> all right, guys. we're following breaking news from spain overnight. rescue efforts continuing to unfold from that country's worst flooding disaster in decades. the death toll rising. dozens of people still unaccounted for after parts of the valencia region saw a year's worth of rain in a single day. kelly cobiella has the very latest for us.

hey, kelly. good morning. >> reporter: hi. good morning to you, hoda. searchers are looking door-to-door, car-to-car in some areas for survivors in some area after a year's worth of rain in fell in five hours. many killed, and more are missing this morning as we've seen dramatic pictures of rescues by helicopters and really devastating destruction. homes ripped apart, cars piled up on narrow spanish streets and in one case, on a highway. one mayor says the situation in his town is apocalyptic. there are more severe rain warnings just issued this morning as more than a thousand troops have been deployed to the area to look for survivors. this has really been a horrible situation for spain, and today they're beginning three days of mourning even as those rain and weather warnings have been issued, hoda. >> so tragic. all right. thank you so much, kelly. a little bit past quarter after.

for walker buehler coming off his second major arm surgery to come in and shut down the yankees in the ninth. celebrations breaking out across the city of angels, but some taking a turn. looters hitting the street, even setting a bus on fire, but back on the field, the team soaking it in. japanese sensation shohei ohtani's historic 50/50 season ending with a ring. and a post from his little league team where it all started. this latest victory, perhaps just the start for this stacked squad. all right. congratulations to l.a. the party just getting started for them. the dodgers already announcing details of the world series parade in l.a. which is going to take place tomorrow. quick turnaround there. a fitting date because it's actually the birthday of late legendary dodgers pitcher, fernando valenzuela who passed away last week. the parade is actually going to be in addition to another celebration at dodger stadium, and guys, don't worry. there's only nine years left on shohei ohtani's contract.

stories. new overnight a fire rips through a home in san francisco, leaving five people displaced. it happened about 230 this morning along sanchez street in noe valley, near james lick middle school. investigators say the fire started on the second floor. firefighters had to face multiple hazards, including live electrical wires, which fell as first responders were on the scene. pg&e helped de-energize the power line. no one was hurt. the red cross is assisting those impacted by the fire. testimony resumes again this morning in the high profile murder trial of nima momeni. he is the man accused of killing tech executive and cash app co-founder bob lee. yesterday, a san francisco police sergeant took the stand. rasheeda de león collected and compiled several surveillance videos leading up to lee's murder. testimony wrapped up with a police investigator describing the search of the millennium tower and nima momeni condo in emeryville, as well as his eventual arrest. let's get a

charter boat captain and former competitive surfer, cole taschman says he was paddling just past the reef when what he thinks was a 7 to 8-foot shark hit him from behind. >> he got both my feet. i could see his nose wider than my feet. and i was like, okay. i'm bit, and it happened so fast. it was in a split second. >> reporter: taschman says his friends, fellow surfers immediately came to his aid. his girlfriend captured the dramatic moments from the shore. on the beach, his friends used their surf leashes to form a tourniquet and stop the bleeding as they raced to the nearest hospital. >> everyone asked, why didn't you call 911? it's, like, we are 911. i got 93 stitches. i had two surgeries to repair my tendons and i have about 10 or 15 staples. i'll be in a wheelchair probably about a month, and hopefully getting back on the boat within three months or so. >> reporter: this incident cole

officers arrested nearly 100 striking hotel workers in last night's chaotic march and protest. it happened in the area around union square. at one point, demonstrators blocked

good morning. 856 a marcus washington new overnight. a fire ripping through a home in san francisco, leaving five people displaced. it happened around 230 this morning along sanchez street in noe valley. this is near james lick middle school. investigators say that fire started on the second floor. firefighters had to face multiple hazards, including live electrical wires, which fell as first responders were on the scene. pg&e helped de-energize the power lines. no one was hurt. the red cross is now assisting those impacted by that fire. well, children everywhere and in most cases their parents are getting ready for trick or treat tonight. and if you're wondering, sundown a little after 6 p.m, authorities are reminding everyone to play it safe out there. parents, make sure that your kids aren't wearing those costumes that drag
