mountains, those gusts may top 50mph. so some of those stronger wind gusts coming in tomorrow night through wednesday. but we're going to see day after day of these high winds that could create some issues for power. as well as trees. and we may have an elevated fire danger as well. so as we're getting started this morning in walnut creek, at least for now, the wind is still calm. it's 46 degrees. and as we go throughout the day, we're going to see those temperatures in the mid 60s at 10:00 and into the low 70s at noon, eventually making it into the mid seconds for today. notice these temperatures are pretty nice across the bay area, with some low to mid 70s and a few upper 70s in parts of the north bay. we'll be tracking those changes. we'll talk more about the wind and the impacts to the power that may be coming up in just a few minutes. back to you. all right. thanks, kari. well, we're just more than 24 hours away until the polls open here in california. the latest nbc news national poll shows support for vice president kamala harris and

91 years old. what a voice. later today, we will get a better sense of which schools might close in the alum rock school district in san jose. today in the bay's bob redell joins us live from outside horace cureton elementary school in san jose. and, bob, what are they expecting there? well, good morning to you, chris. horace kira elementary behind me. joseph, george middle next door. and 11 other schools, a total of 13 schools in the alum rock school district. they're on a list of campuses that might close. today, the superintendent is expected to whittle that list down to ten. ten schools, eight of which would be closed. two more that would be consolidated after this school year. the school district says these closures are necessary because of declining enrollment. unfortunately, the problem is not unique to alum rock. both oakland and san francisco unified are having internal battles over closing schools. berryessa united in san jose plans to close three, and franklin mckinley, also in san

jose, says at least five of its schools could be gone at the end of the school year. the superintendent says his district lost 40% of its student body since 2011 because of a declining birth rate and families leaving the bay area to escape the high cost of living. a number of students have declined across the state by about 6%, so this is not something that is isolated to a school district or a region. it's a statewide concern. it's one of the most difficult decisions that we'll have to make. you know, we know that families are schools are deeply rooted in communities. back here to alum rock, one parent told us here at alum rock that if horace curtain closes behind me, it will be difficult for her family to get their child to the new school since curtain is so close. the other school would presumably be further away. the alum rock school board will announce the final decision on school closures on december 2nd. later this morning at 830. san

would have already gotten notice that you do need to take some time today to prepare for that potential of not having power. and we're starting out this morning with a calm wind for most of us. but we are seeing some breezy conditions coming through the delta, and that's what we'll have to watch out for as we go into this afternoon. some of the wind coming in from the north is very dry. that means the relative humidity drops to critically low levels. that dries out the vegetation even more so when you get in even a breezy wind, it's going to possibly increase our fire danger, and we're going to see that continue into this evening. but of course, the key areas will be watching will be in the north bay elevations above 1000ft, and also through the delta. and as the wind picks up tomorrow. so a red flag warning will be going up for tomorrow. starting at 10 a.m. the hills and mountains will be very dry and windy, and we may see some of those gusts topping 50mph. temperature wise looks pretty good. will be in the low to mid 70s. we'll talk about the

cool morning in castro valley. we're in the upper 50s and a little bit of a breeze kicking up. it will be a breezy, sunny and mild day, but then tomorrow the winds get even stronger, increasing our fire danger. so i'll have more on that. and what's ahead for the rest of the week coming up. right on. hey, the camera holding steady right here. we'll see how things shape up tomorrow. but the drive across, holding steady as well. 101 two. and from marin county, the golden gate bridge looks great right now. we don't see any slowing for that north bay commute just yet. we'll talk about the impact. that may be an effect today. and actually, as folks adjust from the weekend. well good morning. very happy monday to you. stocks will open to the positive this morning. wall street in a good mood. despite that weird job report on

thousands of bay area runners. and we mean those giving it their all. yesterday in golden gate, half marathon, which took runners through the marina and presidio, then across the golden gate bridge. some 7000 runners took part in that and a separate five k race. half moon bay runner named anthony curti won the men's division. taylor abrams won. she's from austin. won the first place for women. she did okay with the hills as long distance runners from around the world yesterday descended on to the big apple. this is where the 48th new york city marathon. more than 50,000 runners took part there. the race runs through all five boroughs, and the runner from the netherlands won the men's race in. a kenyan runner won for the women's division. good for them. well, trending this morning, three women are taking their love of actor dev patel to a whole new level right here in the bay area. the trio are organizing a dev patel lookalike contest in san francisco this sunday. they got the idea after a similar event was held in new

york for timothee chalamet. that event drew thousands of people, including timothee chalamet himself didn't win the contest though. just kidding. women say they created the event expecting a small gathering, but now it's up to more than 130 people rsvp'd. they say the contest won't just be about the slumdog millionaire star, but also an excuse to have fun and meet new people. i feel like i'm even like, i'm pretty sure someone has met someone who looks even remotely like dev patel or kind of has like a same facial, like feature structure. so i just felt like, you know, there's also just like a lot of, like diversity here in san francisco bay area. so you're like, this feels like a good way to kind of like celebrate the actor and the people who live here. that's cute. i bet he's surprised the winner is going to get 50 bucks presented on a large check. and a monkey man statue contest will be held this sunday at dahle. miguel hidalgo statue in dolores park. it starts at 1:00 in the afternoon. that's kind of cute. i'm not saying this is the

reason, but it's a clever idea. if you're attracted to a specific celebrity and you want someone who might have a resemblance to them, that's better than any dating app. genius. yeah. that's true. here's my type. and you have your pick. you're like. or they may be getting stunt doubles for the movies. this is true. oh, yeah. it's a win win for everybody. so many opportunities. oh, it is going to be windy this weekend. yes, absolutely. and it's going to be a multi-day event where we're talking about high winds, low humidity and an increased fire danger. let me show you an example here. this morning. most of us are feeling a calm wind, maybe a little bit of a breeze here and there in spots like vacaville. but then as you go up in elevation, the wind is really gusting. currently at mount saint helena. the wind is at 55mph while it's at three in livermore. so this is going to be an example of the kind of wind that we'll see over the next few days. most of us in the valleys won't feel it, but with the hills, the mountains getting those high winds and low
5:22 am
humidity, the fire danger will be quite high. and we're starting out this morning in santa rosa, 42 degrees. light wind as we go throughout the day, it's going to gradually warm up and it's going to be a nice one. lots of sunshine. so if you are planning to head to the beach, heads up that there is a beach hazard statement in effect pretty much for all of our coastline, and we are seeing the water temperature only at 53 degrees. but then those waves are coming up anywhere from 9 to 13ft. and that will make it very dangerous along the coastline today. meanwhile, our valleys will see high temperatures in the low to mid 70s, up to 77 in concord and walnut creek, 75 and 73 in hayward and near the coast. we're in the upper 60s here. low 70s for palo alto, san francisco, upper 60s to low 70s today. and a lot of these temperatures are the same as what we've seen recently. 78 in santa rosa. now there is an area of low pressure to our north. high pressure to our south. this high pressure is going to block any rain chances throughout the week, but also create that pressure gradient that will
5:23 am
increase our fire danger. and that red flag warning that's expected to begin tomorrow at 10 a.m. we're looking at high wind gusts as well as very low humidity, and both happening at the same time. so any fires that do start may spread very quickly. and that's part of the reason why pg&e is putting people on notice for possibly shutting off their power starting tomorrow and temperatures in the 70s. looks like a nice week, but we will just have to be very careful with that fire danger and mike, you're starting with a look at the drive through the bay bridge toll plaza looks pretty standard right now. the time change. some folks might have kept a little bit of a carry over from the hour they got a little extra sleep. early start for highway four is slowing. early start for highway four. highway 37. vice versa. on the maps, you see them, so that might be a factor. the rest of the bay shows a nice easy drive. the note though, with the time change, the evening commute gets darker. when folks look outside, they tend to rush out earlier from the office, and so we do see a little more strongly influenced evening commute and afternoon.

of the bay area this week. the warning pg&e is now sending customers. good monday morning. i'm kris sanchez. i'm in for laura garcia, and i'm marcus washington. let's get a look at that forecast for you this morning. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking what we can expect. we talked about those windy conditions, so that's a big concern for us. we're going to be talking a lot about the high wind. even though most of us aren't feeling much of a wind this morning, it will become a lot more gusty over the next couple of days and last for several days. hour by hour, we are showing winds at about 10 to 15mph, maybe a little bit higher in some spots. but notice that as it turns red and those color contours, the winds get stronger. it will be 25 to 30 mile per hour winds later this evening. but tomorrow is what we're really watching with even higher wind gusts that could top 50mph in some of our hills and mountains. temperature wise, we are going to see some low to mid 70s for today. upper 70s for the

inland east bay to the north. bay with a high of 78 degrees expected in santa rosa and 71 in san francisco. once again, we'll talk about the changes coming up. but, mike, you were seeing that chp left a note about the san mateo bridge. they mentioned wind. san mateo bridge in this flat section. usually they talk about the high rise. whatever the case, we know that kerry's talking about more wind coming in. so that's a note for today. and holding on as we watch those winds develop in those higher elevations like the higher portions of the bridge. now just off the dumbarton bridge we're looking at that crash. it's the willow off off ramp. watch the off ramp and watch the area. there may be some debris. 101 maintains a smooth speed there, a little slowing for 101 through san jose. typical. right around oakland road we see highway four highway 37 look at highway four. more of a build coming out of the antioch area all the way over in toward concord. that may be the time change we sometimes see folks take advantage of that little extra sleep. they're able to get to work a little bit earlier by a few minutes, but it hasn't affected the backup at

the bay bridge. that's standard. back to you. thank you. mike. all right. we are now just one day until election day, and already millions of americans have voted by mail. also in person. yes. scott mcgrew with us right now. and, scott, one day ago. and look, there's going to be a lot of counting because a lot of people voted. it's going to take a lot of time. yeah, that's exactly right. so we're going to preach some patience here. a reminder because walk in voting tends to favor republicans. mail-in voting tends to favor democrats. these totals that we're going to see may move back and forth as the night goes on. something trump has said is evidence of cheating, but it simply isn't. our director of elections here at nbc says calling some states may not come until wednesday morning, maybe later than that. so i think the earliest we could know would be wednesday morning or wednesday during the day. i think that the states, like states like pennsylvania, michigan and wisconsin, are possibly calling callable
5:34 am
wednesday morning or wednesday day if there's some spread in the race. and so it really depends. most of those states will count up most of their vote. and also in places like georgia and north carolina. so these are key battlegrounds that will determine the presidency. but if the race is tied, it could easily go several days or if not a week. now the race is tied at least nationally. a reminder though, we elect state by state. so these national numbers are less predictive of who wins. the problem is, when you burrow down state by state, the numbers are so close there, there's no predicting. even when trump is ahead or harris is ahead, they tend to be within the margin of error. so again, that doesn't count. over the weekend. the respected des moines register poll showed harris ahead in iowa, a state trump has won twice again within the margin of error. but the turnaround here is huge. when biden was running, he was down by 18 points. they can make those polls sing. they can make them sing. they brag about it. i
5:35 am
got a poll. i'm ten points up in iowa. one of my enemies just puts out a poll. i'm three down. joni ernst called me. everyone's calling me. they said, you're killing in iowa. the farmers love me and i love them. but they came up. they just announced a fake poll. hey, think of it right before the election that i'm three points down. i'm not down in iowa. i got $28 billion for the farmers, 28 billion, preferably from the bay area. vice president harris made a brief appearance on saturday night live. you heard the audience's reaction. a trump appointed member of the federal communications commission complained, this isn't fair. that it violated equal time rules, and nbc then gave trump 90s of free ad time on sunday. the rules say you don't have to offer both candidates equal

course, nbc bay area will have your local races kris as well. thanks for explaining that equal time thing, because i did have that question as we were watching saturday night live. i'm like, wait, what does this mean? so thank you. you're very welcome. all right. the santa clara county registrar is right now scrambling to correct a ballot mistake impacting about 1200 voters in gilroy. the registrar just discovered the error late last week and notified voters on friday. here's what happened. a mapping mistake allowed some people to vote for a belen community college trustee candidate, but in the wrong district. the county has since corrected the ballots to impacted voters, so anyone's who's already cast their ballot. you now have to cast a provisional ballot for the trustee race. over the weekend, we spoke with one of the two candidates, alex larson, about the confusion i had at least ten people today tell me that they tried to vote for me, but they couldn't vote because my name was on their ballot. now, the other candidate, lorena tariba, declined to comment,
5:38 am
saying she was still learning about the ballot problem. voters who already cast their ballots still can use the new ballot to select a candidate in that particular race, in person, or by mail, but without impacting other selections on their original ballot. our election day coverage begins tomorrow morning, right here on nbc bay area and today in the bay. you stick with the network for continuing coverage. we will be on the air starting at 2:00 in the afternoon, also streaming local results online and on our nbc bay area streaming channel, and also on our app. the polls, the polls, of course, close at 8:00. you can point your phone camera at that qr code on the screen to download the nbc bay area app, and that's where you can also stream that coverage and get breaking election alerts sent straight to your phone. the high profile trial surrounding the murder of tech executive bob lee resumes today in san francisco courtroom. prosecutors

5:40 am
an idea of where this all happened here. the sheriff's office says a group of six people, three adults and three young people, went out crabbing from west side marina in bodega bay. they took off around 3:00 saturday afternoon, and they were expected to return a few hours later, but they did not. the coast guard says an 11 year old survived and managed to walk himself up from the beach, where he was taken to get help and reunite with his family. a teenager, however, was found dead. now there are four other boaters still missing debris that looks to be from the boat has been found along the coast. the u.s. coast guard made the difficult to decision call off their search late sunday due to the 52 degree weather, the sea temperature, which causes and cause hypothermia to set in within an hour of entering the water. we're well past that that our. now, rough waters and windy

conditions were also seen in contra costa county over the weekend. video from antioch shows crews who rescued several people after their 15 foot boat capsized. now this happened sunday morning at the antioch and in the marina in antioch. i should say. now, fortunately, five people were rescued, all of whom are okay. one of the survivors said their boat was knocked over by a large wave. now winds are something to watch out for. as we approach tomorrow, pg&e will give an update later this morning on its public safety power shutoffs. tomorrow's psps include 3600 affected customers in napa county, 3500 in solano county, 1200 in sonoma county and 900 in contra costa and santa clara counties, as well as 400 in alameda county. now, pg&e says it is taking proactive measures to ensure that the reliability of power at polling places will
5:42 am
be secured. that is, of course, ahead of tomorrow's historic election. we're live in san francisco this morning. ginger conejero saab. today in the bay? yes. really good to hear that. they'll be protecting the power around those polling locations. yeah. all right. thanks, ginger. all right, let's check in with meteorologist kari hall, who is taking a closer look at the winds. kari, you're saying they're gusting at those upper elevations? yeah, and it's not just the mountains, but also near the coast. so we do still have the beach hazards statement in effect. that will continue until 7 p.m. some of those waves may break up to 14ft. we're already seeing 13 foot waves around bodega bay with the water temperature of 53. another factor we look at along with the high winds, is the relative humidity and when we see it dropping into the 20 to 30% range, the air is very dry, but it gets even drier for tomorrow. and that's when they will issue the red flag warning for these inland areas that are going to see that northerly wind coming in and gusting possibly over
5:43 am
50mph for some of these areas highlighted in that red flag warning, low humidity, high winds that means that any fires, any sparks could spread into a fire very quickly and make very, very quickly get out of control. so we do have to be very careful even the next few days with no rain in the forecast. so i'll be watching out for that. we'll talk about the temperatures coming up. mike, you're seeing the backup on schedule at the bay bridge. yeah. no time change for that. it forms right on schedule here. but let's look at the distribution. here's the backup at the toll plaza. pretty standard from the center lanes out. but we already see a more slowing in richmond than we do on a typical monday. highway 37 showed early slowing. look at the extensive slowing on highway four coming into the area. and on 242, a lot of times the monday after a time change, folks are getting an earlier start. they may adjust back on tuesday. we'll watch it. but tuesday does have a heavier volume than on monday, so we'll continue to follow the progression. we have this from last week. i just want to remind folks that the gilman street interchange off i-80 or on to
5:44 am
i-80, they're working on some roundabouts, and so there will be some traffic switches going on right there. the freeway itself moves smoothly, but the note is, if you use gilman getting in toward the area. as we look at the rest of the bay, we're moving toward another issue on the peninsula. overnight closures on the highway 35 between schaar park and hickey. just note that there will be some lane closures, so watch for the road work. use caution through the area. two 8101 through that same portion of the peninsula moving just fine. and they're moving well right now. note the little slowing typical for san jose starts right on schedule here for north 101 around oakland road. i do want to point out the area through palo alto, because a lot of times folks traveling in this portion, specifically traveling southbound with these headlights, they'll get that sun rise in their eyes at a different time in the morning. so keep that in mind. bring those sunglasses. you might get that sunrise slowdown through this portion of the bay. back to you. thank you. mike. well, dawson's creek star james van der beek makes a major announcement about his health. what? he's saying about that diagnosis when we return. plus.
5:45 am
5:48 am
now and it will be clear we're looking at a mostly sunny day as our temperatures head for the low 70s here. really nice, but a bit of a breeze and getting windy tomorrow, so we'll watch those winds. we'll talk about the impacts coming up in a few minutes. yeah. so far the altamont pass, where they have the wind farms, those are moving. it's moving smoothly. here's 580 coming in towards dublin out of livermore. no, there is no problem on 580. but i'm seeing some slowing getting down there out of contra costa county. we'll talk about the change i see. i'll show you that coming up. all right. thanks. mike. and kari happening today. striking workers at boeing will vote on a new contract offer. and the deal includes a 38% pay hike over four years, plus a larger signing bonus. the latest offer is being endorsed by union leaders, who told their members they have extracted all they could from the company. the
5:49 am
group made up of more than 33,000 factory workers, rejected the prior two offers, but this deal comes at a critical time for boeing, which announced last week it plans to raise up to $25 billion to shore up its finances. dawson's creek star james van der beek has now been diagnosed with colorectal cancer. the actor announced that diagnosis in an interview with people magazine over the weekend. he says that he's been privately dealing with the diagnosis and taking steps to help resolve it, adding there is reason for optimism. rectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed here in the u.s. all right now is the time to think about your health care coverage for the year ahead. open enrollment for covered california now underway, and this year could be more affordable for more people than ever before. here's why. in recent years, there has been an expansion in the premium tax credits that is really vastly improved affordability across the board for people of lower
5:50 am
income and has also helped people out at the higher range of income, who used to face kind of a cliff where they wouldn't be eligible for tax credits, and now they are so covered. california enrollment is open now through january 15th. and that premium tax credit she was talking about was expanded to include people who make 400% of the federal poverty level. that amounts to $60,000 in income for a single person, or nearly 125,000 for a family of four. and that's on the higher end of the income scale. premiums are capped at 8.5% of income. you can go to covered california.com to see what you qualify for. by the way, a record 21.3 million people signed up for coverage under the affordable health care act or obamacare last year. the niners are getting their chance to recover on their bye week, and one of their stars may give them a big boost when they come back to action. the niners are

really hoping running back christian mccaffrey will be on the field. this is when they resume practice later today at levi's. this will be their first workout since their big win over dallas last sunday night. cmc has been out all season. this is due to achilles tendinitis. coach kyle shanahan says that before he ever plays in a game, he's going to have to practice with no setbacks. the expectation is to see how he is when he gets back and then evaluate him as he goes. you know, i mean, of course, the hope is that everything just goes back to normal and it's, you know, perfect. but that's what we're all striving for. but you got to play that out smartly and you got to evaluate that each day. what we see with our own eyes, what he tells us. now the niners are four and four right now. they'll take on the buccaneers in tampa on sunday. well the raiders, meanwhile, have to turn things around quickly to keep this from becoming a lost season. they were dominated yesterday by the bengals in cincinnati, losing 41 to 24. following the game, the team fired three coaches,

including offensive coordinator luke getsy. all right, battle rounds conclude tonight on nbc's the voice. it is the last pairing of contestants which represents the coaches first opportunity to not only mentor the artist, but also to have to choose who stays and goes. reba mcentire talks about what she's learned through this process. i think the thing that i learned from the first two seasons is to speak from my heart. be honest. don't be pretentious. don't be. don't be holding back and just share with them the experiences that i've had and the good advice that i've had from mentors since i've started in this business. when i was 13 years old. the voice airs tonight at eight, followed by an snl election special featuring some of the best political sketches from the show's 50 seasons. and make sure you stick around for the latest local headlines on nbc news at 11. well, halloween has come and gone, and thanksgiving now 24
5:53 am
days away. christmas 51 days away. if you were counting or wondering. so this begs the big question when should you start decorating for the holidays? well, that debate is really gaining some ground over on social media, with many people expressing their opinions. a survey from today's homeowner says 34% of people actually plan to put out the outdoor decorations before thanksgiving. so i want to know when do you think is the appropriate time to pull out the holiday decorations and put them up right after halloween? is one of the suggestions or questions after thanksgiving okay? or should you wait even longer? i mean, that's kind of nice too. thanksgiving day has always been the thing. like after you eat the dinner and my family was like, pull out the tree and start decorating the tree. yeah, a lot of families still. they're all the dishes are out. they're like, yeah, let me get to that. i'll put up the tree. that's why he marcus washington the tree. that was always my thing. i say the perfect time is when you feel like it. and you know what? mind your own business, people. so
5:54 am
there you go. there we go. excuse me, ma'am, right. if i put out my lights, you know, whenever. yeah. no one should have anything to say about it. the next question. when do you take them? you take them down, though. we have something to say about that. yeah, i do mine before the new year. okay. i'm talking about you got to start fresh. but if i'm in the mood to put out my stuff early, nobody should have anything to say about it. but maybe you should wait past this weekend, though, because it's going to be windy. it's going to be windy, and so we'll have to strap everything down. yeah, my little inflatable penguin may be blowing all over the place to make the rounds in the neighborhood. they can fly now. yeah, you don't want it flying off. we're going to start out all clear. it is also very nice and a cool morning, but it will get windy over these next few days. and our mountain gusts may top over 50mph. and some of those stronger winds coming in tomorrow night into early wednesday. and we may have issues with power and trees and an elevated fire danger. we do have a lot of concerns, even
5:55 am
though temperature wise it's been pretty nice. right now. we're starting out with some low to mid 50s and headed for the mid 70s for today with dublin's high 75 there. so 75 in martinez and 78 today in santa rosa. low 70s for san francisco tomorrow. the temperatures are about the same and we see that continue into wednesday with just a slight dip in some of our valley highs into the upper 60s. so what's going on here is we have a storm system to our north, high pressure to our south. both of these together is going to make the wind flow very quickly and rush in from the north. and we will see even stronger winds going into tomorrow afternoon. even today, it's pretty breezy near the coast with san francisco's wind gusts coming in at about 25mph at 6:00 this evening, and then staying breezy overnight. but look at what happens tomorrow afternoon. this map just lights up and we may see very high areas of very high wind gusts in areas above 1000ft, 30, 40, 50 mile per hour
5:56 am
winds. and we know that when we have winds that high, there is a lot of issues that will arise. so we'll see that continue throughout much of the week. as our highs will be in the low 70s and only slightly cooler for the weekend. the fire danger kicking up between tomorrow evening, continuing into wednesday, thursday, possibly into friday. highs in the low 70s. and for san francisco we're looking at upper 60s and low 70s with gusty winds there as well. mike, you're seeing those lanes filling up at the bay bridge and the view doesn't look any different really than a typical monday. but we did see some slowing on the east bay maps, some more slowing here early through richmond. a little early build for this much slowing through highway four. and that plays out on those travel times. look at this highway four at the top over a half hour now, and just about a half hour for vasco road out of contra costa, county down into alameda county. and 580. look at there's more slowing for 880. so there's a subtle change, maybe a little earlier build than your typical
5:57 am
slowdown. back to you. thanks, mike. well, happening now, bart, police identified the man. they say randomly stabbed a woman on a bart train. that attack happened as that train pulled into the mission. and 24th street station on saturday. now, the victim, 54 year old woman, suffered serious injuries. officers yesterday arrested jovanny cortez. this is at the oakland fruitvale station. police say that he has a long criminal rap sheet. and they're crediting surveillance images for helping them identify that suspect. it is 556 and election day, one day away. and of course, it's not just the presidential race. we're deciding we have some big local races as well. ahead at six, the new legal action against embattled alameda county district attorney pamela price, as she awaits the fate of her recall race. y're watching toouda
