6:00, this is how harris and trump are zeroing in on battleground states. we'll show you the new polls showing the race tightening with roughly 24 hours to go until the polls open here at home. plus, school closures in the south bay. the announcement, expected today to narrow down the list of campuses getting shut down. and remembering on tuesday, quincy jones got word overnight that the music legend passed away. we'll take a look back at his legacy. finally turning. thank you for joining us on this monday morning. i'm kris sanchez. i'm in for laura garcia, and i'm marcus washington will get a look at that commute with mike in a bit. but first let's talk about those windy conditions out there for us. kari that's going to be the big issue. and the high winds is going to increase our fire danger going into the next couple of days. we are seeing a light wind this morning as we take a live look from dublin. remember that early sunrise? now that we've set our clocks back
6:02 am
one hour and we are going to see our temperatures warming up gradually as we go throughout the day. so take a look at the trend here. low 60s to start mid 70s today and eventually that wind kicks up for the evening with even stronger winds coming in tomorrow. but our temperatures very mild. highs in the low to mid 70s. and mike now a new crash in san jose. you see the backup starting to slow in camera behind us. that's northbound 101 cameras right here. the crash is 101 at brokaw. quickly moved to the shoulder. we may see some recovery there. overall, it should be pretty light in the south bay. we did see an early slowing show up on 880 southbound, and also another around the bay, but now the bay bridge has sorted out to about. it's normal for a monday. back to you. thanks, mike. well, just over 24 hours to go until the polls open here in california. and the latest nbc news national poll shows support for vice president kamala harris and former president donald trump split right down the middle. so the candidates are closing out their campaigns with that final rush through those swing states today in the bay's jay gray is in one of those states,
6:03 am
pennsylvania and the keystone state. jay could really prove key in securing victory for either presidential candidate. yeah, chris marcus in fact, there are many who think that this election will be decided by just tens of thousands of votes from those swing states and both campaigns saying their road to the white house depends greatly on the vote here in pennsylvania right now, the race for the white house now an all out sprint with no clear leader in the latest and last nbc news national poll ahead of tuesday's vote, vice president harris and former president trump each getting support from 49% of registered voters. so we've got to get our country straightened out or we're not going to have a country. all right. that's all. both closing out their campaigns in a half dozen or so swing states that could ultimately determine who wins the white house. i see voters standing together to defend freedom. this moment in our nation has to be
6:04 am
about so much more than partizan politics. gold and amber leaves from the pennsylvania countryside, but make no mistake, bucks county, like so many in this state, is purple split between republicans and democrats. the signs of how close the campaign is here are everywhere. yeah, i feel like from my lens, like the signage at least seems pretty split. yeah, i would say that. along the sidelines of a youth soccer match, parents understand the role their community could play in the political game. some unsure if they'll know the final score when the polls close tomorrow night. no, i won't be staying up late tuesday night. i don't think it'll be. i don't think it'll be decided tuesday night. i think we'll have to wait. officials in pennsylvania warning the count could take days here. yeah. and look, another indication of just how
6:05 am
important pennsylvania is. both candidates today spending a majority of their time in this state. marcus kris. all right. jake gray in doylestown, pennsylvania. thank you. jay. well, congressman eric swalwell is expected to file a lawsuit against alameda county district attorney pamela price today. the east bay u.s. representative recently sent a letter to price demanding a retraction of what he calls, quote, malicious and defamatory statements. this all surrounds comments posted on facebook by price on october 2nd, which is the same day congressman swalwell endorsed a recall effort against her. price posted that swalwell was trying to oust her, to, quote, shield himself from unethical practices during his time in the da's office. 20 years ago. swalwell denies those claims, and his lawyers say they will be filing a government tort claim against her after price did not apologize. we have reached out to pamela price for comment. we have not heard back. our

artists in the time to create we are the world. this is a song written by michael jackson and lionel richie jones also produced jackson's biggest selling albums, including thriller and off the wall, but his impact was immense, not only in the world of pop and soul, but also jazz. the times time actually called him one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, and this month he'll receive an honorary governor's award oscar for his work in film. quincy jones was 91 years old in just a few hours, some san jose families will learn whether or not their children's school survived the cut. today in the bay's bob redell joins us live from outside. horace cureton elementary school in san jose. and bob, that's one of 13 schools that is possibly up for closure in the alhambra school district. correct. good morning to you, kris horace kira elementary behind me, joseph george middle, which is next door, and 11 other schools, as you mentioned. yes, they are on
6:08 am
a closure list for the alum rock school district. today, the superintendent expected to whittle that list down to ten. so they'll move three schools off that list, eight of which would be closed, two more that would be consolidated after this school year. again, that list of ten, the school district says these closures are necessary because of declining enrollment. unfortunately, the problem is not unique to alum rock unified. both oakland and san francisco unified are having internal battles over closing schools. berryessa unified, also in san jose, plans to close three, and franklin mckinley again, also in san jose, says at least five of its schools could be gone at the end of the school year. the superintendent of franklin mckinley says his district lost 40% of its student body since 2011 because of a declining birth rate, and families leaving the bay area to escape the high cost of living. the number of students have declined across the state by about 6%, so this is not something that is isolated to a school district or a region. it's a statewide concern. it's one of the most
6:09 am
difficult decisions that we'll have to make. you know, we know that families are schools are deeply rooted in communities. here in the alum rock unified school district, one parent told us that if horace cureton closes the school behind me, it will be difficult for her family to get their child to the new school. since cureton is so close and presumably the other school will be much further away. the alum rock school board will announce its final decision on school closures on december 2nd, and in about 2.5 hours at 830 this morning, the san antonio elementary school here in the alum rock unified school district will be hosting a town hall for parents reporting live here in san jose. bob redell today in the bay. we know a lot of people have a lot to say. thank you bob. 609 for you, this morning. let's take a live look out in san jose. so we're tracking the possibility of power shut offs to prevent wildfires. pg&e is expected to deliver an update around 1030 this morning. the utility says nearly 15,000 customers could experience that impact in 17
6:10 am
counties tomorrow. that includes nearly 450 and alameda. nearly 950 in contra costa, more than 3600 in napa, more than 900 in santa clara and nearly 3600 in solano, as well as more than 1200 in sonoma counties. pg&e says that it has taken proactive measures just to make sure that the power is reliable at the polling places on election day. meteorologist kari hall, of course, been tracking those winds, which have pg&e on alert this morning. absolutely. and it basically includes all of the bay area except for marin, san francisco and san mateo counties. all of the other counties highlighted in this orange is under a special watch. if you have signed up for alerts, you would have already gotten an alert at this point. if you are in one of the areas that may be affected, but we're also going to see those winds picking up tomorrow. red flag warning will begin at 10 a.m. and continue through the next few days. as some of our winds
6:11 am
in some of our upper, upper, upper elevations could reach 50mph or higher. so the criteria for red flag warnings issued issued 12 to 24 hours in advance. relative humidity must be 15% or less, with frequent wind gusts over 25mph, both happening at the same time. we are expecting that to occur starting tomorrow afternoon, so i'll be tracking all of those conditions and the impacts we may see that's coming up in a few minutes. mike's been looking around to find you some lower gas prices. yeah, not as many bargains as last week, but we'll start the week in the tri-valley. this is not the lowest in the county, but the lowest for sunol is at 389. in sunol super stop on andrade road, a few cents higher this week than last at cupertino for their low of 393. now at aria gas and market on stevens creek boulevard. and that's in the middle here and the best in san francisco is 409 at speedway on cesar chavez street. to get you back to work there, get you back to gasbuddy.com to update. you
6:12 am
can review those price changes as we start the week back on the roadways. we're looking at a pretty smooth drive. we did see a little early start for the slowing on highway four. it's a little more extensive than we often see on a monday. we tend to see that the monday after a time change, some folks are still well rested. we're looking over here toward the tri-valley and the drive out of contra costa county, and we're looking at vasco road now. we're not so bad. about half an hour. it's holding pretty steady there. highway four is again. see that slower drive for the drive through into concord. back to you. thank you very much, mike. 611 this morning in growing new roots. next here on today in the bay the east bay nursery back in business after shutting down without warning and the way one employee was able to step up and save their coworkers jobs. plus, on wall street, there will be a stock market switch. i'll tell you all about that. let's go out to the futures, see how we're doing. one day before the election. i think a lot of traders are going to take today off and a new twist on the recent trend of lookalike

good mood despite that weird jobs report friday. there's a company called super micro computer in san jose. its stock has fallen more than 40% in the past few days, after its accounting firm, ernst and young, said it could no longer trust the executives there. intel huge news for santa clara. intel it will be dropped from the dow 30 industrials and fellow chip maker nvidia, just down the street, will take its place. you could not invent a more on the nose metaphor for the rise of nvidia and the fall of intel. intel at one point thought about buying nvidia. it didn't. nvidia stock, meantime, has been a darling of wall street's because it makes the chips that are driving all the artificial intelligence. the switch between the two will happen on friday. intel has been on the dow for more than 25 years. tgi fridays made it official, filed for bankruptcy. there are no locations in the bay area these days. trivia for you, the company claims the long

island iced tea was invented there. elon musk says laid off government employees will get as much as two years salary and severance if they're laid off after he takes control of the federal budget. donald trump has asked him to make enormous cuts in the government if he wins. musk says the laid off workers can double their income, take vacations, whatever. musk, it should be noted, failed to pay laid off twitter employees their severances. the machinists over at boeing are voting today on a proposed contract that would end their strike. the strike is so big, it helps skew those friday job numbers. boeing says if the workers turn down this offer, the next offer will be smaller. and on our podcast, sand hill road, we take a look at really big investors making really big bets on the environment, pouring billions of dollars into ideas that strike some people as crazy. but the payoff would be huge. here's investor mike schroepfer. everyone is
6:18 am
terrified of failure, and one of the things i've figured out is in a business realm, i'm willing to take a lot of technical risk and a lot of different areas, because i found that's the only way you come up with truly disruptive ideas you never thought of sand hill road. you can find that podcast wherever you find your podcast. listen to it in a busy traffic on your way to work. that's a perfect fit. i really think it's cool when they are betting huge amounts of money on things that sound crazy. only because of the payoff would be enormous. i mean, moving icebergs, right? and changing the chemistry of the ocean. but it's a lesson for all of us that even a small risk can make a big difference. absolutely. you just have to think big. try. yeah. try something today. yeah, try. good luck with dinner. family. all right. moving the bay area forward a popular richmond nursery is growing new roots. this is annie's annuals, which abruptly shut its doors last month when the owner decided to close up shop. many people were so disappointed as some customers usually travel from out of state to get their hands
6:19 am
on rare and native plants. the head of research and development at annie's ended up buying the nursery and all of its stock. it is now called curious flora nursery, and opened for the first time over the weekend. that what a great comeback story. yeah, absolutely. well, speaking of coming back, take a look at this. joining this morning holidays are turning to starbucks on thursday, but we're actually getting a sneak peek this morning at the coffee chain's holiday cups. you know you all love those holiday cups over there. the company posted this on its instagram page for preview. familiar shades of the starbucks green and cranberry red, paired with the soft pastels is the color scheme for this year's festive display. graphic elements include charms, which look like old fashioned holiday ornaments. i just hope all that dye doesn't impact the recyclability or compostability of it, you know? let's hope so. i didn't think i didn't go there with it, but okay, there you go. all right. with just all trending for you this morning, three women, they are really
6:20 am
taking their love for an actor, dev patel, to a whole new level. right here in the bay area. i mean, he is cute. the trio organizing a dev patel lookalike contest in san francisco this sunday. they got the idea after a similar event in new york for timothee chalamet. that event drew thousands of people, including timothee chalamet himself. so the women say they created this event expecting a small gathering. but now they're up to more than 130 rsvp's. they say that the contest won't be just about the slumdog millionaire star, but also an excuse to have some fun and meet new people. like, i feel like i'm even like, i'm pretty sure someone has met someone like dev patel or kind of has the same facial like feature. so i just felt like, you know, there's also just like a lot of, like, diversity here in san francisco bay area. so you're like, this feels like a good way to kind of like celebrate the actor and the people who live here. all right. the winner will get 50 bucks, but also bragging rights and a big check and a monkey man statue. the contest will be held
6:21 am
this sunday at miguel hidalgo statue in dolores park. it starts at one in the afternoon. if anybody is wondering, i'm hosting a george clooney lookalike contest, the san jose contest? are you hosted? i don't know, you got time for that? just got to take care of marcus washington contact. oh, there we go. i'm going to win. i think i know the winner in once in a while. you said what i said. get a body double and you can sleep in once in a while. i would like that. i don't think it's going to work. i don't think the bosses are going to be happy with that. how is this mark is so short? my name is mike, righ. all right. we have been focused in on that weather over the weekend. we got a taste of it this weekend. it's been really nice. but now we're going to add in some wind and it may cause some issues for us as we go into the next couple of days. we're starting out in the low 50s. it is all clear and will be bright
6:22 am
and sunny all throughout the day. let's take a look at our highs for this afternoon. headed up to 73 in los gatos and 74 in south san jose in gilroy. this afternoon. 77. and so it feels nice and warm during the middle of the day, but the wind will start to increase. and in martinez, we'll see a high of 75 degrees, while oakland will be in the low 70s, upper 60s for half moon bay and daly city and redwood city, 73 and looking at upper 60s low 70s in san francisco, downtown 70 degrees and for the north bay, 77 in napa and 73 in clear lake. we are seeing a system approaching from the north, but it's being held up by high pressure. so we have high pressure to the south, low pressure to the north. this is going to create a pressure gradient and make the air flow very quickly across the bay area, rushing in from the north. and we're going to see that continue into the next couple of days getting even stronger starting tomorrow afternoon. so when these areas light up and red and purples, those are where
6:23 am
we may have the strongest wind gusts. and these are elevations above 1000ft. that may get some really high wind gusts as we go into tomorrow evening, into wednesday morning, and even look at san francisco, 36 mile per hour winds, half moon bay, 43 mile per hour wind gusts. so that is going to cause some damage. and we're watching for that potential of the fire danger. you want to make sure everything around the house is secure and ready for those high winds that will continue for several days at least through the end of the week. but temperature wise, it looks really nice with highs in the low 70s inland and near 70 degrees in san francisco. mike, now you have two crashes in san jose. yeah, our live look shows a great flow of traffic. now starting to get back to moving as we would expect. look at that beautiful sunrise time change. remember that you're going to get sunrise. and that's going to affect folks traveling down the peninsula into the south bay as well. but northbound we have recovery. the crash cleared both at brokaw and i'm told the other one just a little bit north of
6:24 am
there, north of alum rock, is also cleared to the shoulder, some slowing now south 680 and through pleasanton. no surprise for the slowing through hayward or for the rest of the east bay. back to you. thanks, mike. well, starting a new chapter on the hardwood. next on today in the bay. today's first step in replacing the legend who built stanford into a women's basketball powerhouse
6:27 am
on the farm. head coach kate payne makes her debut behind the bench when the cardinal hosts denver university. pei spent 17 years as an assistant under the legendary tara vanderveer, who you might remember, retired last season along with the future and the pressure of replacing the all time winningest coach, she will have to guide the cardinal through their first season in the acc in a new division, and that's a challenge she says she's looking forward to. i love stanford basketball. it's an incredible honor, responsibility, opportunity to lead this program into the next chapter. but this is not about me. this is about the women on our team. this is their opportunity. and we want to have a fantastic year. and it's all going to be about working extremely hard, being very unselfish and continuing to stay healthy and improve. we like what we hear. also, this season, for the first time in 25 years, the stanford women did not
6:28 am
appear in the preseason top 25 ranking. just you wait, though. oh, yes. all right. 627 for you right now. look, we've got a lot more ahead for you at 630, including an election day story. you will only see on nbc bay area. the confusion following an unusual ballot error discovered in the south bay in the last minute. solution now forcing election leaders and some voters to scramble. plus, we're live in san francisco, where you're not feeling it just yet, but high winds are anticipated to start, as kerry has been reporting, they are being blamed or seen as a potential cause for a deadly boating accident over the weekend. we'll give you the details on that up ahead. stay
6:30 am
i'm sam liccardo, and i approve this message. evan low. caught again. his tactics called "outrageous" and "self-serving." slapped with charges that he illegally used banned corporate money for his campaign. low's already under investigation for running a corrupt scheme to give political access to big money donors. but when it comes to fighting for us... low's missed nearly 1,000 votes... from affordable housing to climate change. evan low only serves himself.
6:31 am
coast guard person has to make in suspending the search. right now, at 630, search called off after strong winds created dangerous conditions for boaters. the reason? a late night rescue operation for several people was aborted, and those heavy gusts could lead to power shutoffs in parts of the bay area this week. we're tracking these incoming conditions with our team coverage. and one day until election day. but it may be several days before we know the answers. pack your patience. this is today in the bay. that
6:32 am
time of year again. when we hear that. that's right. 24 hours away. hard to believe. i'm kris sanchez. i'm in for laura garcia, and i'm marcus washington. let's get a look at that forecast. as we've been talking about those windy conditions. meteorologist kari hall, of course, been monitoring that for us. right now it looks pretty calm out there. it is calm for the most part, and we're starting out clear. but we will start to see things changing for tomorrow. so we want to take some time to prepare today. and it's going to increase our fire danger with some of our hills and mountains. seeing gusts over 50mph and the wind increases and may be the highest late tomorrow night into wednesday. that means that we may have issues with power and trees coming down and an elevated fire danger across the bay area. let me show you example, an example of what we may see in san francisco. currently, the wind is at eight miles per hour, but look up to the north at mount saint helena. it is a 50 mile per hour wind that's already gusting, and this is before we're issuing that red
6:33 am
flag warning and looking out for those dangerous conditions. so we're going to see some of our hills and mountains experiencing much different weather than what we'll have near the coast and in the valleys. so we'll talk more about that coming up in just a few minutes. back to you, chris and marcus. all right, kerry, thank you. well, one day to go until election day. already millions of americans have voted by mail and in person. scott mcgrew one day. but it might take a lot of days to count up all those votes. yeah, everybody's going to have to be patient. this has happened before. a reminder, because walk in voting tends to favor republicans generally, and mail-in voting democrats generally. these totals you're going to watch tomorrow night may move back and forth as the night goes on. something trump says is evidence of cheating, but it isn't. our director of elections here at nbc says calling some of the states may not come until wednesday morning, maybe even longer than that. so i think the earliest we
6:34 am
could know would be wednesday morning or wednesday during the day. i think that the states, like states like pennsylvania, michigan and wisconsin, are possibly calling callable. wednesday morning or wednesday day if there's some spread in the race. and so it really depends. most of those states will count up most of their vote. and also in places like georgia and north carolina. so these are key battlegrounds that will determine the presidency. but if the race is tied it could easily go several days or if not a week. well, and the race is tied at least nationally. a reminder though, we do elect state by state. so national numbers are less predictive of who wins. the problem is, when you burrow down state by state, the numbers are so close there, there is no predicting even when trump is ahead or harris is ahead, they're ahead within the margin of error. so again, doesn't count. over the weekend, the respected des moines register poll showed harris ahead in iowa, a state that trump has won twice. now, you
6:35 am
note these don't add up to 100% because it does take into account third party. but again, these are within the margin of error. the turnaround, though, for democrats here huge. when biden was running he was down in iowa by 18 points. they can make those polls sing. they can make them sing. they brag about it. i got a poll. i'm ten points up in iowa. one of my enemies just puts out a poll. i'm three down. joni ernst called me. everyone's calling me. they said, you're killing in iowa. the farmers love me and i love them. but they came up. they just announced a fake poll. hey, think of it right before the election that i'm three points down. i'm not down in iowa. i got $28 billion for the farmers, 28 billion, preferably from the bay area. vice president harris
6:36 am
made a brief appearance on saturday night live. you heard the audience reaction. a trump appointed member of the federal communications commission complained it wasn't fair that it violated equal time rules, and nbc then gave trump 90s of free ad time on sunday. now the rules say you don't have to offer both candidates equal time, only that they have to ask for it. and it's not unusual for saturday night live to feature a presidential nominee so close to an election. john mccain made a cameo the weekend before the 2008 election. good evening. good evening, my fellow americans. i'm john mccain, and, you know, i'm just sarah palin. the final days of any election are the most essential. this past wednesday, barack obama purchased airtime on three major networks. we, however, can only afford qvc. these campaigns sure are expensive. they sure are.
6:37 am
the real john mccain with tina fey as his running mate, sarah palin pretending to be on qvc. now, the real cindy mccain also appeared as well, selling fine gold as part of the fine gold act. this is 2008. remember, that must have been funny. nbc's wall to wall coverage. meantime, begins tomorrow at four in the afternoon. and of course, nbc bay area kris will have all your local races. 2008 november i had an infant. i can't remember that far back. all right. a santa clara county registrar, the is now scrambling to correct a ballot mistake that is impacting about 1200 voters in gilroy. the registrar discovered the error late last week, and notified voters on friday. here's what happened. a mapping mistake allowed some people to vote for a gavilan community college. trustees candidate, but in the wrong district. so the county has since corrected ballots and sent them to those impacted
6:38 am
voters. anyone who has already cast a ballot now has to cast a provisional ballot for the trustee race over the weekend. we talked with one of the two candidates, alex larson, about that confusion. i had at least ten people today tell me that they tried to vote for me, but they couldn't vote because my name wasn't on their ballot. all right. so we also reached out to the other candidate, lorena tariba. but they declined to comment, saying she was still learning about the ballot problem. now, voters, if you have already cast your ballot, you can still use the new ballot to select a candidate in that particular community college race in person or by mail without impacting the other selections on your original ballot. our election day coverage starts at 5:00 tomorrow morning, right here on today in the bay, and we will continue live coverage on air starting at two in the afternoon. but we will also be streaming live local results online and on our nbc bay area streaming channel. after the polls close at 8:00 in

the evening. if you point your phone camera at that qr code on the screen, you can download our nbc bay area app. there, you can stream our live coverage and also get breaking election alerts sent straight to your phone. well, pg&e this morning warning about possible power shutoffs as soon as tomorrow. this is due to the high winds and extreme fire risk today in the bay. ginger conejero saab. live for us this morning. and ginger, those winds led to some deadly conditions. for one group of weekend boaters out there. right? that's correct. investigators are looking to the winds as a cause to this. marcus, the coast guard has called off its search, but they will work with the sonoma county sheriff's office today to piece together the clues on that missing boat that left to go crabbing saturday afternoon in bodega bay. that boat never came back. now, let's give you an idea of where this all happened. authorities say a group of six people, three adults and three young people went out crabbing
6:40 am
from westside marina in bodega bay. they took off around 3:00 saturday afternoon and were expected to return a few hours later, but they did not. the coast guard says an 11 year old survived and managed to walk himself up from the beach, where he was taken to get help and reunite with his family. however, a teenager was found dead. four other boaters are still missing, and debris that looks to be from the boat has been found along the coast. the u.s. coast guard made the difficult decision to call off their search late sunday due to the 52 degree weather. the sea temperature, which causes and cause hypothermia to set in within an hour of entering the water. we're well past that that our. rough waters and windy conditions were also seen in contra costa county over the weekend. video from antioch shows crews who rescued several
6:41 am
people after their 15 foot boat capsized. that happened sunday morning at the antioch marina. fortunately, five people were rescued, all of whom are okay. one of the survivors said their boat was knocked over by a large wave. now winds are something to watch out for as we approach tomorrow. kerry's been talking about this all morning. pg&e will give an update later this morning on its public safety power shutoffs. tomorrow's psps include 3600 affected customers in napa county, 3500 in solano county, 1200 in sonoma county and 900 in both contra costa and santa clara counties, as well as 400 affected customers in alameda county. we will have possibly more numbers, updated numbers on that, and a news conference that's scheduled for later this morning. pg&e says it is taking proactive measures to ensure that the power to polling places will be will be on ahead of tomorrow's historic election.
6:42 am
