philadelphia. peter, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, hoda, good morning to both of you. this is where vice president harris is going to close out her campaign. a rally is going to feature ricky martin, lady gaga among others. the harris campaign is projecting confidence. they argue while former president trump's closing message is focused on, in their words, darkness and anger, her final pitch is positive and optimistic. >> east lancing, are we ready to do this? >> overnight vice president harris in michigan -- >> we have momentum. it is on our side. >> reporter: -- that rally aids say her first where she did not mention former president trump by name. another notable change, harris beginning with remarks on the israel-hamas war, saying she would support israel's security and acknowledging the losses of the war. >> this year's been difficult given the scale of death and destruction. and as president, i will do

campaign trail as well, including events in three swing states after a weekend battleground blitz. garrett haake join us us from pittsburgh, which is one of trump's stops today. hey, garrett. >> reporter: good morning. trump has been a 2024 presidential candidate for 719 days now, a campaign that has completely worn out the term unprecedented. he has just one day left to convince the american people to send him back to the oval office. overnight, donald trump making one final pitch to voters in battleground georgia. >> i'd like to begin by asking you a very simple question. are you better off now than you were four years ago? >> reporter: trump spending the last sunday of the race in the three states most critical to his campaign strategy, attacking democrats -- >> it's a very demonic party. >> reporter: -- and rallying in pivotal pennsylvania, where the former president mused that he should have never left the white house, despite his 2020 campaign loss. >> the day that i left, i shouldn't have left.

go and vote. >> reporter: the mood on his campaign plane described by an aide as more subdued and focused, less free wheeling in the race's final days n. an interview with nbc news on sunday, trump himself sounding wistful about the approaching end of nine years of nearly constant campaigning. i enjoy doing it, trump said of his rallies. there's never been anything like it. trump ends this campaign with four events today, one in north carolina, then two in pennsylvania. then one final blowout rally late tonight in grand rapids, michigan. savannah? >> garrett, thank you very much. nbc national political correspondent steve kornacki is with us now to break down the last national nbc news poll, a razor thin race. here we have it. right back where we started. 49 to 49, a dead heat. >> yeah. i mean, it is kind of fitting after this campaign of just absolute uncertainty, we end with absolute uncertainty. though it's interesting -- and it is notable when we had

polling four years ago and even eight years ago, the first time donald trump ran, he was always pretty far behind in the national polling. this is the first time he goes into the election day in a tie nationally in our poll. there's also the battleground states. we think these will decide the election. you see a bit of a north/south divide here. what you're looking at are polling averages. this is our compilation of all the major polls in these states. the margins are very small. arizona, georgia, north carolina kind of the sun belt. and the best harris numbers, michigan, wisconsin, pennsylvania. this is the key. if harris gets michigan, pennsylvania, wisconsin, if there's no surprises elsewhere, she has exactly 270 electoral votes and she'll win, meaning trump really has to get one of these northern tier battleground states. >> keep these ones in red and pick up one of these other battleground states. >> exactly. >> let's talk about this iowa poll. suddenly iowa is the center of the political universe. a poll comes out just of iowa voters, and it shows kamala harris ahead by three points.

this is a pretty red state the last two elections. tell us why this matters and what it might symbolize. >> so red that both parties dec decided at the start of the campaign, this was not going to be a battleground state. they were not going to spend a fortune. they were not going to send the candidates there. the pollster who took this poll, the reason this got so much attention, she has a excellent track record in iowa of coming in at the very end and nailing what the final result is. that doesn't mean this is the way it's going to be in iowa. but it raises possibilities nobody's been thinking about before. >> if you get into it, it's quite revealing in terms of where kamala harris is finding support in a state like iowa, which is a traditionally ruby red state. >> exactly. what they found in this poll was a massive gender gap, in particularly among older women. harris running up a massive margin over trump there. might be tied to the issue of abortion, which is particularly front and center in iowa, with

that six-week abortion ban that went into effect there. i'll show you from our national poll, we find the same thing. look at this gender gap here. among men, trump leading by 18 points over harris. among women, harris leading in our poll by 16 over trump. you add those together. that is a 34 point gender gap, ten points higher than the biggest we've ever seen. >> higher even than since our last poll. this may well be the story of the election. hoda, over to you. let's turn to election security, a top priority of both federal and local officials. extreme measures are being taken to ensure voter safety. some states even putting the national guard on standby. there's also a major focus on stopping the spread of misinformation online. nbc's stephanie gosk is joining us with that part of the story. hey, steph, morning. >> good morning. this heightened protection comes after local officials say hundreds of ballots were potentially damaged or destroyed in washington state and oregon and concern over a possible

repeat of what happened on january 6th. some states are pushing back against the federal government's plan. this morning with just one day to go, unprecedented new measures are under way to keep americans safe and secure the vote. security will be stepped up at polling stations nationwide amid concerns of potential violence and voter intimidation. after two ballot drop boxes were set on fire, some now have fire extinguishers. >> they're tested. they're true. they got the approval of local firefighters. >> at many county and government buildings, barricades are up. and at some polling locations, bullet proof glass has been installed to protect workers, along with emergency panic buttons n. washington, d.c., fencing is going up at the white house and the vice president's residence and many businesses are already boarding up store fronts. the justice department now plans to monitor polls in 27 states to ensure compliance. but some republican-led states

like texas are pushing back saying federal monitors will not be allowed in. in the swing state of michigan, officials say they're prepared to stop any violence. >> we're ready and we have partnerships with law enforcement and others to protect the people who protect democracy. >> reporter: but perhaps an even bigger issue, the online spread of disinformation and lies, particularly coming from russia, china, and iran, intended to disrupt the election. that includes the fake viral video showing supposed haitian immigrants voting multiple times. federal officials say russian interference groups are behind the fake video. >> russian-produced and specifically designed to go viral to undermine american confidence in the security and integrity of our elections. >> reporter: the fbi also concerned about two videos falsely claiming to be from the fbi relating to election security. one stating the fbi has apprehended three linked groups

committing ballot fraud and a second relating to the second gentleman. the fbi says it's working closely with state and local law enforcement to respond to election threats. officials urge voters to report any concerns and be aware of potentially fake or misleading election-related content by verifying that it's from a trusted source. if you don't know where that video came from, don't believe it. make sure you can trace it back to the beginning. >> thank you. we are going to bring you the latest, as election day gets started tomorrow on "today." and then hope you'll be with us all night long, as lionel richie said, nbc news will have complete election coverage right here on nbc and also online at nbc news now. speaking of voting, craig joins the table with a critical vote that's happening today. >> yes. unrelated to the vote tomorrow, of course. savannah, hoda, good morning. good morning to you as well. after more than seven weeks on the picket lines, 33,000 striking machinists at boeing will decide whether to accept or reject the company's latest contract offer.

nbc's tom costello covers aviation. tom, again, this has gone on for almost two months now. any sense of how today's vote is actually going to go? >> it's going to go down to the wire. you're right. we're on day 53 of this boeing strike. union leader who is have been negotiating at the table with boeing have told their members after members rejected two previous offers that this time they need to accept boeing's latest offer. and one of those leaders told "the seattle times" that boeing's ceo intervened directly in last week's negotiations with the labor department. he warned if the union rejects this offer, the next one will not be as generous. union leaders believe him. that's why they're urging the rank and file members to vote yes on what they call an historic agreement. the offer on the table would raise pay by 38% over four years, which boeing says would bring salaries for machinists up to about $119,000 for the average machinist. the deal also includes and has

401k contributions and a $12,000 signing bonus. all they need is a simple majority to pass this, craig. and we should find out hopefully later on in the evening. >> union leaders want a thumbs up vote here. can you lay out, tom, what's at stake for boeing here? >> they are in a world of hurt. this has been a tough few months for this company, struggling mightily. production has been brought to a near halt on their 737, 767, and 777s. that's led to a quarterly loss of $6 billion, and boeing is planning to lay off 10% of its workforce this month. the bottom line is boeing is in deep trouble. the stock down 40% year to date. it's not producing planes. boeing needs this deal to go through. >> all right. we should know in a few hours. tom costello for us, thank you. now to that severe weather that ripped through the southern plains over the weekend leaving at least 11 people injured. oklahoma hit by a string of tornados and heavy rain saturday and sunday. they levelled several homes and

businesses there. and the area is not in the clear yet. more severe weather is in the forecast for that region. 17 million people at risk for tornados, damaging winds, and flash flooding, which brings us right to al for a first check of the weather and that threat that's still ongoing. >> unfortunately, you can see the 17 million stretching from springfield, illinois, all the way down to austin, texas, damaging hail. tornados are possible. wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour from springfield, wichita falls, dallas, oklahoma city. this is where we could see ef-2 or stronger tornados. some of them could be nocturnal, which are twice as deadly. and heavy rain. we're looking at flash flood watches -- we're looking at the flood risk from chicago all the way down to dallas or anywhere from 2 to 3. but some places 5 to 6 inches of rain. we're getting into your local forecast coming up in the next 30 seconds.

lee resumes in san francisco in a courtroom there today, where prosecutors say nima momeni stabbed and killed lee in april of 2023. testimony last week surrounded the dna found on the alleged murder weapon, a knife which police say was found in a caltrans yard near where the victim was discovered. the defense tried to raise questions about the integrity of the evidence gathering and dna swabs. that case is expected to continue for several more weeks. i'm bob redell here in san jose. later today, we'll get a better sense of which schools might close here in the alum rock school district. 13 schools are on a list of campuses that might close today. the superintendent is expected to whittle that list down to ten, eight of which would be closed, and two more that would be consolidated after the school year. the school district says these closures are necessary because of declining enrollment. all right. gusty winds. also a headline this morning kari. what should we expect? it's going to really start to get gusty later on this afternoon. but some of the stronger wind gusts are coming tomorrow night into wednesday. and that's the reason why we may
