freedom, with opportunity and with dignity. for all americans. and i will rescue the american dream. we're going to have the american dream back soon. right now at 5:00. election day is here. and before the polls open, we have live. we are live with both presidential candidates. final message to voters. pg&e expands its list of possible bay area power shutoffs due to heightened fire danger. we're tracking the potential areas of impact and how it may complicate things this election day. this is today in the bay. good tuesday morning to you. 5:00 right now. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. we begin with our microclimate weather alert this morning. here is a look for you outside across the bay area. a red flag warning starting today, leading to the possibility of thousands of bay area customers losing power. the elevated threat will continue through
5:02 am
thursday. now, today, some polling locations may close as a result. we already know about one closure. it's in the oakland hills. this is video of joaquin miller voting center number 73 on sanborn drive. we have a live look at the pg&e outage map for you. the graphic on your right shows the potential power shut off outages per county now numbering more than 10,000. bay area wide. let's bring in meteorologist kari hall. she's tracking the red flag warning for us. and what conditions look like for today. well, we're starting out with a calm wind, but the wind will be picking up as we go throughout the day. the red flag warning begins at 11 a.m, and that's when some of our hills mountains will start to see those gusts picking up. that could top over 50mph over the next couple of days. some of the strongest winds will be coming in later this evening into the overnight. and so we've highlighted all the areas where we do have that potential of getting those power shutoffs. and you will get those alerts if
5:03 am
you're already signed up with pg&e. getting a look at the humidity, that's the other ingredient, along with the wind and the relative humidity will be dropping throughout the day. take a look at some of our inland areas, where we will see the relative humidity down to 15% during the middle of the afternoon in livermore, and parts of the north bay. overnight is when we typically see the highest relative humidity, and it's still remaining very low for tomorrow morning, as those winds will be gusting and then very dry air returning for tomorrow afternoon. so we will be watching all of this, and the issues we may see arise as a result of the high winds and the low humidity coming up in the full microclimate forecast. back to you, gary. thank you gary. well, now to decision 2024 and it all comes down to this. after months of campaigning with so many unexpected twists and turn, including the late switch in candidates. election day has finally arrived. here we go. the polls officially open at 7 a.m. across california, but many people believe the finish line
5:04 am
in the race for president may be far away from here. pennsylvania is now being viewed as a make or break state, and that's where we find today in the bay's jay gray live this morning in philadelphia and jay, polling places there are already open. yeah. no. laura marcus they have been open this morning and we've already seen lines early morning. we're actually at the museum of the american revolution. so much of our nation's history, the history of the formation of our democracy inside this building. but it's a building that also is a polling place today. and a lot of people lining up to cast their ballots. and as you describe what could be a very pivotal state, let my freedom rot in hell for vice president kamala harris. the campaign ends with a star studded party on the rocky steps in philly, and one last pitch to voters. it is my pledge to you that if you give me a chance to
5:05 am
fight on your behalf as president, there is nothing in the world that will stand in my way. think of it. this is it. this is the last one that we're going to have to do. while former president trump closes things out with a raucous crowd in grand rapids and a call to help him finish his comeback tour with a win. would you vote tomorrow? we can fix every single problem our country faces and lead america, indeed the world, to new heights of glory. after months of promises and prodding, often pulling no punches, the only message that matters now comes from the silence of voting booths across the country and from many who cast their ballots ahead of election day. i know who i'm voting for. i actually just dropped off my ballots a few minutes ago. 78 million americans voted early, either in person or by mail, not as many as four years ago. during the pandemic, but more than 2012 and
5:06 am
2016. many saying this election could be decided by just tens of thousands of votes from a half dozen or so swing states. topping the list pennsylvania, a state both campaigns say is vital to winning the white house and where residents say they're worn out from the back and forth. the attention and the constant reminders that come every time they turn on a tv. hopefully the commercials stop, you know? yeah, i think we have to accept that whoever wins isn't going to ruin our country, and we just have to kind of close that divide that's been going on through the election. it's one of the few things voters on both sides seem to agree on. now, if pennsylvania is the tipping point, if the vote count here could determine the next president. what we've been told by election officials is it won't take until the weekend like it did four years ago. but it will likely take a day or two before there is an
5:07 am
official winner here. so, marcus, we're at election day, but we could see a little more watching and waiting before it's all said and done. yeah, i think most voters are anticipating that. so the waiting will go on. all right. thanks, jay. yeah. well, unfortunately, businesses in some bay area neighborhoods are also bracing for the possibility of civil unrest in the aftermath of this election day. this is new video from late last night in downtown oakland, near broadway. you can see businesses were boarding up their storefronts as a precaution. oakland police are already preparing with additional patrols and mutual aid from neighboring agencies that are on standby. well, two of the most closely watched bay area races will decide the future of leadership in oakland and san francisco. one is the mayor's race. the other a recall today in the bay ginger conejero saab joins us live in san francisco this morning, and ginger, here we go. the last minute push from five candidates there. it's coming down to the wire. that's right. good morning
5:08 am
to you, laura. in the days leading up to today, you can see and feel the engagement of people here in san francisco, people holding up signs at major intersections during the morning commute, for example, you can go around the different neighborhoods and see the engagement of people having signs for their candidates, displaying on their homes. but with san francisco's ranked choice voting, it really can be anyone's game. there are four challengers vying for incumbent mayor london breeds seat. they have debated, they have campaigned, and they have made their case for months. supervisor ahsha safai was the first to throw his name in the race. philanthropist daniel lurie, board of supervisors president aaron peskin, and former supervisor and interim mayor mark farrell rounding up the top five candidates for san francisco mayor breed's challengers have run on a campaign of change for the city, focusing on turning around the city's issues surrounding crime. homeless encampments, and open
5:09 am
air drug use. the incumbent mayor has made her case for revitalizing a comeback for the city. now, mark farrell, one of the challengers here, hit with a historic campaign ethics fine on the eve of election day, farrell is agreeing to pay $108,000. it comes after he illegally funded his candidacy through a committee he created for a separate purpose. farrell says the settlement was over a, quote, accounting error that we corrected and publicly disclosed months ago. now, san francisco uses ranked choice voting, and under ranked choice, voters rank the candidates one through ten, with one being their first choice. if a candidate gets more than half of the votes after the first choices are tallied, then we have a winner and the election is over. but if no one gets a majority, the candidate with the least number of votes is eliminated and their supporters second choice vote is now tallied. that process continues until one candidate
5:10 am
wins the majority of the vote. it was through ranked choice voting that oakland mayor sheng thao was elected as oakland's mayor two years ago. today, she faces a recall vote along with alameda county district district attorney pamela price. if taub is recalled, a special election will be held within four months to elect a new mayor. and as for district attorney price, if she is recalled, the alameda county supervisors will appoint an interim da to serve until 2026. then another da would need to serve the rest of price's term, which runs through 2028. now, there are further complexities to the recall vote, or, if that recall does go through for mayor thao and for da price. but the first step, laura, is today we will watch and wait to see what the voters in both oakland and san francisco have to say. we're live in san francisco. ginger conejero saab today in the bay anticipation high for many. thank you ginger. 510 this

morning, new developments in the war of words between east bay congressman eric swalwell and alameda county district attorney pamela price. the dispute now turning into a legal battle. it centers around comments, price first posted on facebook october 2nd. this is the day swalwell endorsed the price recall effort that she claims that swalwell was trying to oust her to, quote, shield himself from unethical practices during his time in the da's office 20 years ago. end quote. it's a claim that he completely denies. and after she refused his demands to retract the statement, his attorneys yesterday announced a lawsuit claiming defamation. her office then responded. last night, a spokesperson telling us, quote, while congressman swalwell continues to focus on frivolous threats and meritless endeavors, d.a. pamela price will continue to find ways to work cohesively with elected leaders and community members who are focused on public safety in alameda county. and remember to get updates on all races. be sure to download our free nbc

bay area app. it's available for all smartphones. you can find it in your apple store or your app store right now. all right, you may need a breath of fresh air all day long with all this election news. or maybe you're headed to the polls taking a live look outside in dublin this morning. we'll check that morning commute with mike in just a little bit, but let's check the forecast with kari right now. and we are under a red flag warning that begins at 11 this morning. that's the reason for the microclimate weather alert. although we are starting out fairly quiet this morning, a light wind and temperatures in the mid 40s to low 50s. it is now 51. in oakland and it's 5051 degrees in san jose. as you're heading out to the polls in dublin, expect temperatures in the low 50s at 8:00. at noon, it's 70 degrees and it will be a really nice da, but it will be breezy later on this afternoon. and increasing winds may make it feel a little bit cooler, but our highs are headed for the low to mid 70s all across the bay area for today, and we'll talk about what's ahead and the issues we may see from that red flag
5:13 am
warning coming up. mike, you've been watching the roads and it seems like so far it's pretty quiet, very quiet. i do want to give a warning of something we saw on chp report. as we look at the bay, a smooth flow of traffic. i did see a little slowing. it's cleared up for 880. so no, no call out for hayward. but we are calling out this westbound 80. your commute direction through pinole. watch out near the pinole exit, there are reports of a car that hit some debris. a car tire and some other metal in the roadway. chp went through the area. they didn't see a problem. this incident has been pulled off of the freeway. they're taking care of that vehicle with no injurie. but do watch that in the commute direction. saw some slowing also coming south 680 across that benicia bridge. there was a construction crew reported a little farther south. they may have done a traffic break to clear them. it's cleared up in the last few, so great stuff. heading all the way over toward the bay bridge with the backup not yet forming. of course, it's too early for that at the toll plaza. back to you. well, coming up on today in the bay, a price hike warning from store owners on this election day. plus

football season already and not a satellite dish in sight! i hardly recognize the roofs i grew up on. enough squawkin'! oh great... coach prime! y'all are whining while everyone else is watching nonstop football on directv! tell me! whose house is this? their house? i think they're renting. listen, listen— i know they get easy access to all this football... but you know what you got? what, coach? a crumb bum attitude! now drop and give me twenty! twenty what? san francisco is in crisis and we need real experienced leadership. we need mark farrell. our interim mayor who got things done. who showed we can clear tent encampments, fight crime, and address the drug crisis. who will make the tough choices for our city's future. "i'm mark farrell. i'm running for mayor because san francisco deserves better." "i'm ready to deliver that change on day one."

today. wait out the results which remember, may not come for quite some time. boeing has agreed with a deal with its mechanics. the workers said yes to a contract. so that's a huge weight lifted off the economy. palantir that mysterious company in palo alto, says so many government agencies and others are using its ai. it posted huge profits. watch for this stock to move today. speaking of ai, meta has reversed course, will now allow defense contractors and others associated with the u.s. military to use its artificial intelligence in a posting. it calls for a, quote, responsible and ethical use. canada, britain, new zealand and australia also get access in north carolina. yesterday, donald trump, in his last campaign appearances, promised new tariffs on mexican products if mexico doesn't close its border, starting at 25%, running up to 100%. in other words, doubling the price of a product that comes out of mexico. that could be cars from ford or bmw.
5:18 am
levi's jeans, coffee, and of course, hundreds of food products. the national retail federation just issued a warning yesterday, one day before election day. the prices americans pay will skyrocket under trump's tariffs. and this was before the mexico announcement. here's that report. the nrf says the tariffs would add 78 billion to costs of clothing, toys and furniture and appliances all hit the hardest, according to the report. we know housing is expensive. the national association of realtors says the average age of a home buyer is now 56 years old, the oldest it's ever been. worse, the average age of a first time home buyer is now 38. also the oldest it's ever been in the 80s. the average first time home buyer was in their 20s. now it's more likely to be a single woman, not a family as well. the nar points out to points rather to a lack of inventory, high interest rates and student loans as the culprits. and elon musk

is once again won in court in philadelphia. a prosecutor tried to label his million dollar a day giveaway an illegal lottery. musk's lawyers countered by revealing it's not random. they don't pick by chance. they know who they're going to give the prize to, and it's actually a payment for representing musk's super pac. now, musk has said it was a lottery. he said it was by chance. but i'm going to let you in on a little thing. i think, you know what i'm going to say, doesn't always tell the truth. yeah. that's true. all right. thanks, scott. you bet. well, trending this morning. move ove. mudang a new pygmy hippo. now breaking the internet. want to introduce you to haggis. she's not even a week old. she was born last week at scotland's edinburgh zoo. and she is one tiny hippo. she's also not on public display just yet, because the first 30 days are very critical for pygmy hippos development. the recent bursts of mustang and haggis are
5:20 am
noteworthy for more than just their cuteness. the species is endangered, with just 2500 believed to be left in the wild. so it's kind of wonderful the attention that's being paid to them as well. yeah, so tiny. like chocolate, right? maybe they should sell those, right? to do more publicity. little baby chocolate. yeah. oh, interesting. all right. all right, well, let's get started talking about this weather, because we are going to see it becoming very windy as we go into the afternoon. starts out calm this morning. and all clear. but we have of course been focused on the high fire danger, the red flag warning that will begin at 11:00. and this is going to be happening for several days, with some of the highest wind gusts in the mountains topping over 60mph. and in the valleys, it's going to be more of a 30 to 40 mile per hour wind, which is enough to blow over some of those decorations. and so you want to make sure everything around the home is secure, as we may also see some downed trees impacting
5:21 am
power. and that elevated fire danger continues. here's a look at our high for today. we're headed for 73 in livermore and in dublin, 75 in martinez and mostly mid 70s for the north bay, while san francisco will top out at 71 degrees into the day tomorrow. there's not much of a change temperature wise, maybe even slightly cooler in the tri-valley with upper 60s, but mostly low to mid 70s. and thursday is a repeat. we're not seeing a change in temperatures, but it's the wind that's going to be blowing in. we can see the clouds rolling in from the north, and this area of low pressure to our north, while there's high pressure just to our south. and so there will be this strong northerly wind coming in. and when it blows over the land, it tends to dry out. and when it comes offshore, it also warms and also dries out the coastline. and when we usually get a westerly wind that comes off of the ocean, it contains a lot more humidity. and we're not seeing that over the next few days. and look at how strong these winds will be early tomorrow morning. it won't
5:22 am
be as calm as it is now. we're looking at winds at 30, 40, possibly 50mph for spots like napa and that wind coming through the delta and over some of the mountains that will gradually start to calm down into the day on thursday. the weekend is looking nice and we're looking forward to the possibility of rain early next week on monday. but until then, it's going to be dry and windy and that high fire danger will continue at least through thursday and then a nicer weekend ahead. mike, you're seeing a pretty predictable drive right now. yeah, this time of day we see a lighter volume. just some folks coming out of the altamont pass with a little bit of slowing. standard pattern ease into livermore in the south bay. there's one incident. north 101 over near tully. there was an earlier incident with some debris. it's cleared from the roadway. no slowing. 84 lit up again after its overnight closure. we know all about that through this section. we do have some crew still going on northbound 680, heading up toward bernal, but no slowing shows up. traffic will pick up a little bit, but it's counter commute. no major problems. and
5:23 am
your commute? heading off to castro valley y into hayward. the nimitz looks very smooth right now. taking a look at travel times out of contra costa county, one of our major indicators. the volume is vasco road where over 20 minutes. now there is a build that's starting to kick in as folks head down toward alameda county. back to you. thanks, mike. while offering free rides to get you to the polls. coming up next on today in the bay, the local transit agency is looking to help you get to your polling location. but first, a reminder for you tomorrow. the warriors travel to boston to take on the celtics. be sure to tune in to nbc sports bay area for complete coverage. game day coverage that is starting at 3:30 p.m. with the warriors pregame live hosted by bonta hill. tipoff is at 4:30 p.m, with the warriors postgame live following immediately after the game. stick around. much more ahead for you right here on

5:27 am
there won't be any fee. likewise, when you get on a light rail train and a fare inspector asks you for fare if you are going to the voting polls, and you let them know that that's what you're doing now, that's great for folks in the south bay, but if your polling place is not along a vta route, some ride services are also trying to help get you to those polling positions. we have uber's get out the vote and lyft lyft up voting access program. they're offering discounted and sometimes free rides to polling centers today as well. so check those apps. no excuses folks. vote, guys. all right. thanks, mike. no excuses. election day news coverage continues. all morning long. ahead on today in the bay. after a tie in the primaries, we check in with sam liccardo and evan low, who are both vying to replace congresswoman anna eshoo. the way both candidates are preparing for the very tight race. well, it is almost lights out on this election, but it might be lights out for some voters. before the polls close. i'll show you where that red flag warning that kerry's

next president of the united states. our scott mcgrew breaks down harrison. trump's final push to voters. plus, a warning from pg&e as people head to the polls. emergency power shut offs are possible due to growing concerns about the wind. the steps taken to make sure that the polling places stay open. this is today in the bay. election day is here. good tuesday morning to you, i'm marcus washington. can't believe it's finally here. all right. it's been a long haul, and i'm laura garcia in for those candidates. a lot to get to for this morning. but first, i want to check in with meteorologist kari hall. we also are tracking a red flag warning today. yes. so it's going to become very windy as we go into the afternoon. mainly this evening into the overnight as we are going to see this beginning at 11:00 for some of our hills and mountains. those are the areas that are going to have the highest winds that may gust over 50mph. and combine that with low humidity, we will have critically dry conditions. and
5:32 am
these are the areas under the pg&e psp s where there may be that potential of power shut offs. make sure you're signed up for those alerts so you do get that information well ahead of time. and we are looking at also that relative humidity that will drop into the teens and 20s, which dries out the vegetation in the hills and some of our brush even more so. so we do have to be very careful as those winds will be quite high. it will also be the kind of weather conditions where any fires can spread very rapidly. and as we go into today, tomorrow, as well as the next couple of days, the same weather conditions will continue and it may not be until thursday when we start to see the wind calming down. so all of this is of high concern as we go through the rest of the week. i'll have more coming up in a few minutes. back to you. thanks so much, kari. that red flag warning already having an impact on a few polling places in the bay area. while pg&e told us they have a plan to provide backup power in the event of a
5:33 am
public safety power shut off. it is certainly not a distraction anyone wants on election day today in the bay's kris sanchez joining us from the newsroom this morning on what more we should know about this. people might have to adjust a bit right. yeah not a lot of people. but if you are voting in person today in napa or oakland, you might have to go to a backup polling place. let's take a look at the map. those areas in orange where our future public safety power shutoffs, where they are expected to happen once the winds kick up. we know that there are already some outages. and we have new video this morning of a voting center in oakland that is now boarded up in anticipation of that, this is joaquin miller park, which is within that red flag warning area. the alameda county registrar of voters is advising people who were planning to vote at that center at joaquin miller park to go to the vote center at montera middle school instead, that is on ascot drive in oakland. you can also drop your ballot off at any drop box. just
5:34 am
don't forget to sign the back of the envelope. and that's true for everybody. napa county has been preparing for possible power outages as well. the good news is that the public safety power shutoffs there are expected after the polls close. but if that changes, pg&e and the napa registrar of voters, they say they're ready. we've provided them with generators out of an abundance of caution. we don't expect this wind event to impact them during the election. it's not going to prevent us from continuing to count, and we're secure. and i don't believe that's just in napa county. i believe that's true. in all 58 counties in california. all right. now, speaking of statewide, about 20,000 pg&e customers around the state were warned to be ready to lose power. more than half of them are here in the bay area now. the public safety power outages could start as early as 7:00 tonight. and as you likely know, polls close at eight. the good news, though, is that
5:35 am
because every california voter got a ballot in the mail, according to a firm that tracks turnout, as many of a third of us, as many as a third of us, have already returned them. laura, thank you very much, kri. 534 right now, the two major candidates for president made their final appeals before the vote. scott mcgrew here this morning, scott. vice president kamala harris pretty much covering all of pennsylvania and former president trump. he was over in michigan and north carolina and then went to pennsylvania. you remember, pennsylvania is going to be the key on this. every american knows pennsylvania. i suspect most leaders in nato know that pennsylvania is going to be key. the chinese, who fear tariffs and the taiwanese who fear the chinese know about pennsylvania and the men and women in the trenches of ukraine. they've all heard of pennsylvania. so here's this one last time. you're going to hear those two candidates for president explaining why they should be president. let us really be true to what our
5:36 am
campaign has been about from the very start. and on that i say, please let us be intentional about building community. let us be intentional about building coalitions. think of this, though. we're just one day away. we've been waiting for this. i've been waiting for years for this. and so have you. and so have you. we've all been waiting four years. one day you got to show up. i don't want any money. i don't want anything. just show up and bring your vote. and if you have somebody else that got a little lazy, bring that person to brand new pictures from maricopa county, arizona, where ballot processing is ready to go. this, of course, was the center of election. lies in 2020, and the so-called cyber ninja investigation, where they
5:37 am
tried to prove there were ballots made of bamboo, showing they were from asia. they of course, found no evidence of wrongdoing. there's been no evidence of any widespread problems of any kind. this election day either. a few hiccups. yeah. you bet. the biggest problem is going to be voter patience. the elections director for nbc says the worst case, it could take a week to know who is the next president. we've turned to amy allison from time to time in the lead up to the election. let's check back in with her. amy is the founder and president of she, the people. amy, will you please join me in encouraging people? let's be patient in these next few days. all right. well, it's good to be here. and i just want to say what a day we are so used to instantaneous results in our fast news cycle. but in this case, for democracy to function correctly, we have to be patient. in california, we're lucky because we all have ballots at home and we can drop those off. will we'll hear the results. as people behind the
5:38 am
scenes count. but in places like ohio, where they're standing in line, or where in georgia, where they have to hand count, we're going to it's going to be several days till we find the results of the election, and it's really going to come down to some districts and some key states, and we want to make sure to get it right. and it might be interesting to know that not only are there election observers here nationally, but internationally, election observers are here. everyone wants to make sure that the american population and the democracy works and functions. amy, this has turned out to be a very, very gender divided election. most american elections actually are this one a bit more extreme, with a lot of gender type questions. i guess it doesn't surprise you that this has been a gender divide in this election. well, a lot of people call it a gendered election already, because early voting is showing that across the board, women are turning out to vote more than men in terms of percentage and just raw
5:39 am
numbers. and so, you know, i think we got to look back to what's motivating american women. the issues could not be more stark. you have a candidate, kamala harris, who's promising to protect reproductive justice and women's freedoms, and a candidate in donald trump who, through word and deed and promise, as well as what his vice president has said is to continue to restrict our freedoms as women. it's highly motivating for american voters, whether you're in california or you're in north carolina or anywhere in between. american women are answering the call to protect their own interests, and they have the vision of freedom, reproductive freedom, and control over their own body. that's really driving their turnout for the election. well, amy allison, is she the people? i appreciate you joining us. and i'm sure we'll turn to you in the next few days as well to get your reaction to whatever it is
5:40 am
that happens. amy, thank you so much. fbi and other american agencies are warning there will be an active effort by russia, even iran, to disrupt not just today, election day, but the days following with false information about cheating, fake grassroots efforts to stir dissension and violence. a prosecutor in philadelphia has gone viral with his very frank warning to people who might want to spread lies or stir up problems in his city. but i also want to be clear anybody who thinks it's time to play militia f around and find out anybody who thinks it's time to insult, to deride, to mistreat, to threaten people f around and find out. we do have the cuffs. we do have the jail cells. we do have the philly juries, and we have the state prisons. and which of these men will be speaker of the house? a reminder, we're all occupied with the presidential election. the entire house of representatives up for a vote. vote. rather, if the democrats

the border. so we're thinking about the economic engine of our community. let's be truthful and authentic that those working in our communities are doing the hard jobs. that requires us to acknowledge the importance of comprehensive immigration reform. we need to have a secure, safe border, and we need more immigration. we need to provide a pathway for daca recipients and many who have lived here for decades, and we need more high skilled immigration. we also asked them about another hot button issue. the war in the middle east. we have to step up to our responsibility in congress to do all we can to push for a quick end to this war. we need all the hostages released. we need to accelerate aid to palestinians. i call for an immediate ceasefire, which includes the release of hostages, the repair of the gaza strip and immediate humanitarian aid. lieu is a current assemblyman. liccardo, the former mayor of san jose. the winner takes the seat held

tuesday morning. turning now back to our election coverage here, a live look at the white house. authorities in d.c. are working extra hours to keep our nation's capital safe. from the white house to local universities, police agencies are certainly on high alert. today in the bay damian trujillo has more from outside the white house. all eyes of the nation are on the white house today. voters will decide in just a few hours who will live inside the white house for the next four years. both candidates are on their last long day of campaigning today before heading to the election night. parties hoping for a victory. former president trump will be in florida awaiting the results.

vice president kamala harris will be at her alma mater, howard university, here in washington, d.c. security measures are tight there today, with police blocking several streets. fencing is also going up along the route to where kamala harris will hold her outdoor party at the white house. the fortress has grown. there is extra security fencing around it today in preparation for any potential election violence, and the clerk at a nearby cvs told me the store is boarding up a couple of locations because of the violence they saw after the last election. america is on the brink of a historic election, and the world is watching. we're at the white house. i'm damian trujillo today in the bay. thanks, damian. all right, well, polling locations in the bay area and throughout california open in just over an hour today in the bay's bob redell joining us live from the santa clara register of voters in san jose. okay, so, bob, what do voters need to know if they're heading out to vote today? well, the polls do open at 7:00 here in
5:50 am
the state of california. they're open until 8:00 tonight. we'll give you some more of the faq's here in a minute. but we got evelyn mendez with the registrar's office. good morning to you. happy election day. you were telling me off camera. are you expecting more people to vote in person this year as opposed to by mail? why is that? what are you seeing? i think people are excited to see the to be involved in the process, to actually come in and get their sticker, come in, and the vibe of the entire election at the vote centers are even here. i think voters are liking that. does this have anything to do with the fact that we're post covid? i think so. i think with covid, that's why we were getting a lot of ballots in the mail. but i think people are more excited to get in and be part of the process. okay, let's say you're waking up this morning and you haven't registered to vote. it's still not late to register. what do you have to do if you want to register the day of. well, you can go to any vote center or in our office and you can do same day registration. it's going to be a different kind of ballot that the conditional ballot that gets processed afterwards. but
5:51 am
you can still register and vote same day. okay. but if you are registered you can come here between seven and eight. you go fill out your ballot, you turn it in. if you've already received an absentee or mail in ballot, you can drop it off at a box or you can have it postmarked by today and it has to be received within a week. yes, and we want it to be an official ballot drop box because there are boxes out there that look like our drop boxes. make sure it's an official santa clara county drop box. and if you're in california, anywhere in california, you can drop your ballot off at any county and you want to make sure that envelope is signed. i just dropped mine off. my wife's off the other day. i want to make sure it's signed. has your address date on it correct? yes. make sure it's signed. sealed in that box before 8 p.m. if you're dropping it in a mail box, we want to make sure that the mailman did not already pick up that mail, because that happens the 8:00 deadline is not for that mail box. it is for our drop boxes only. and do you check the signatures? yes. every single signature, every signature is checked with human eyes. so they go through our machines, capture the signature, and then someone
5:52 am
is looking at them, comparing them. so speaking of your machines, you said you'll probably be about a month before you get all these counted. what do you to say somebody who's sitting at home who is eligible to vote but isn't going to vote today for whatever reason? what would you say to them to get them somebody that's eligible that isn't well, they need to vote. every vote matters, no matter how old you are. if you're the first time voter or if you're a voter that has voted in every election, every vote is exactly the equal everyone should vote. evelyn, thank you very much for getting up early, i appreciate it. again, we're at the office of the registrar of voters, one of the many locations here in the south bay and throughout the bay area. polls open at 7:00 reporting live here in san jose. bob redell today in the bay. all right. good to know, bob. thank you. well, today there's some voting history in the east bay. this election marks the first time students under 18 will be eligible to vote. it's very specific, though. this is the first election in which 16 and 17 year olds can vote in their local school board. elections in oakland and berkeley unified, there are about 1200 registered to vote. we talked with two

student directors who say it's about time. i think our vote matters more than the parents or the staff that's voting. you know, our our lives are directly getting affected day in and day out by the decisions these people are making. considering the amount of work and information that we take in at school about our elections and about our government, i think that we're more than prepared to take on this role. oakland and berkeley voters approved the youth suffrage years ago, but this is the first election that teens can actually vote. today, voters in albany will have an opportunity to grant their 16 and 17 year olds the right to vote in school board elections as well. it's cool to see. all right. 553 for you this morning. let's take a live look outside for you this morning across the bay area. meteorologist kari hall taking a look at what we can expect. yeah, it's going to be a beautiful sunrise over the south bay. some clouds moving in, and we're also going to see
5:54 am
it becoming breezy as we go throughout the day. a red flag warning begins at 11 a.m. that means an increased fire danger, and there will be some higher wind gusts in the mountains over 60mph. really ramping up later on tonight in the valleys, we're going to have wind gusts at about 30 to 40mph. so take a little time this morning before you head out. make sure the garbage cans, anything around the home is secure because it will be windy not only today, but the next several days. we may also have some downed tree limbs and issues with power, and there will also be that elevated fire danger as you're heading to the polls in oakland. it's going to be 56 degrees at 8:00, and then throughout the day, a gradual warm up as we're headed for the low 70s there it will be 71 for the high in fremont and in san francisco, 75 in novato. and we're also going to see some mid to upper 70s for much of the rest of the bay area. also very nice and comfortable, but maybe slightly cooler in some spots and still pretty breezy on thursday. not much of a change
5:55 am
in our high temperatures. we are seeing those clouds coming in from the north. there's a storm system up around the pacific northwest. while we're also having more of an influence from the high pressure that's to the south. but that's what's making the wind flow very quickly and will increase that pressure gradient as we go throughout the day. and a wind coming in over from the north, over the land will be very dry compared to a westerly wind that comes in off the ocean. so that's what we're expecting for the next couple of days. but look at how strong it's going to be. the peak of those wind gusts will be happening overnight into early tomorrow morning, where we may see 40, 50, 60 mile per hour winds and then eventually calming down on thursday. so for gilroy, temperature wise, it's going to be very mild. and it's going to also be nice this weekend with cooler weather ahead next week. and that's when we may also see some rain coming in with highs in the upper seconds. the fire danger through thursday will be the main focus for us, and gusty winds in san francisco as well, with highs in

the upper 60s and lower 70s. watching all of those conditions as we go toward the end of the week. laura marcus a lot to follow, but nice temperatures out there. thanks, kari. well, happening now. two investigations are underway this is surrounding the sonoma county coast after two deadly boating accidents. both were in bodega bay, with the latest happening less than 24 hours ago. investigators say in that incident, two men were on board. one was found dead, another still missing. that second incident happened over the weekend. a family of six was out crabbing at the time. an 11 year old boy appears to be the only survivor. one person was found dead. four others in that incident remain missing. our election day coverage continues this morning at the top of the hour with a live report from what some are calling the state that could make or break the race for president and preparing for a potentially explosive election day outcome. a look at the extreme measures some bay area businesses are taking as a

it's tuesday. i'm marcus washington. and i'm laura garcia. a very busy morning on this election day. we're following multiple races, including the race for the white house. but the weather could actually impact today's election. we start with our microclimate weather alert this morning. a red flag warning starting today is leading to the possibility that thousands of bay area customers may lose power. the elevated threat will continue through thursday, and some polling locations may close as a result. we already know about one closure in the oakland hills. this is video of the joaquin miller voting center number 73 on sanborn drive. we want to give you a look at the pg&e outage map. you see right here. so the graphic on your right, it's going to show you the potential power shut off outages per county. now reaching more than 10,000 bay area wide. i want to bring in meteorologist kari hall right now. she's been tracking the red flag warning for us. and kari, what are those conditions looking like today? yeah, this is a pretty extensive red flag warning. you can see all of the counties
