6:00 am
washington. and i'm laura garcia. a very busy morning on this election day. we're following multiple races, including the race for the white house. but the weather could actually impact today's election. we start with our microclimate weather alert this morning. a red flag warning starting today is leading to the possibility that thousands of bay area customers may lose power. the elevated threat will continue through thursday, and some polling locations may close as a result. we already know about one closure in the oakland hills. this is video of the joaquin miller voting center number 73 on sanborn drive. we want to give you a look at the pg&e outage map. you see right here. so the graphic on your right, it's going to show you the potential power shut off outages per county. now reaching more than 10,000 bay area wide. i want to bring in meteorologist kari hall right now. she's been tracking the red flag warning for us. and kari, what are those conditions looking like today? yeah, this is a pretty extensive red flag warning. you can see all of the counties highlighted all the way up and down the
6:01 am
california coastline. and we are going to see much of the bay area included in that as the humidity drops. and we're also going to see winds increasing. all of this begins at 11:00 this morning. and some of the hills and mountains will have the highest wind gusts. so we're looking at that pg&e power shut off and the outlook that we're expecting for today into tomorrow and possibly the next couple of days, the relative humidity is the other ingredient in that red flag warning. and as of now, the relative humidity is high. seeing it as we normally begin our mornings. but then as we go throughout the day, look at how critically dry that air becomes. only 14% relative humidity for livermore, which dries out the vegetation and there won't be much recovery tomorrow. it won't be as humid as what we're feeling right now, so we're watching all of these conditions along with the wind gusts forecast. i'll have an hour by hour look coming up in just a few minutes. back to you, gary. thank you. all right. now to decision 2024. and it all comes down to this. after months
6:02 am
of campaigning with so many unexpected twists and turns, including the late switch in candidates election day has finally arrived. i want you to check out this countdown clock here. less than an hour to go before polls open, right here in california. but many people believe that the finish line in that race for the presidency may be far away from here. pennsylvania now being viewed as that make or break state. and that's where we find today in the bay's jay gray. he's live for us this morning over in philadelphia. and jay polling places there already open. yeah marcus look we're outside the museum of the american revolution. a building that houses so much of our nation's history, of the history of the formation of democracy here. and it's making history today as a polling place, part of the museum being used as a polling place here. we saw lines early as the polls open. we've continued to see a steady flow of voters and expect more as the day moves on, casting their
6:03 am
ballots in a state that could be very pivotal in this election. let my freedom rot in hell. for vice president kamala harris, the campaign ends with a star studded party on the rocky steps in philly and one last pitch to voters. it is my pledge to you that if you give me a chance to fight on your behalf as president, there is nothing in the world that will stand in my way. think of it. this is it. this is the last one that we're going to have to do. while former president trump closes things out with a raucous crowd in grand rapids and a call to help him finish his comeback tour with a win, would you vote tomorrow? we can fix every single problem our country faces and lead america, indeed the world, to new heights of glory. after months of promises and prodding, often pulling no punches. the only message that
6:04 am
matters now comes from the silence of voting booths across the country, and from many who cast their ballots ahead of election day. i know who i'm voting for. i actually just dropped off my ballots a few minutes ago. 78 million americans voted early, either in person or by mail, not as many as four years ago during the pandemic, but more than 2012 and 2016, many saying this election could be decided by just tens of thousands of votes from a half dozen or so swing states topping the list. pennsylvania, a state both campaigns say is vital to winning the white house and where residents say they're worn out from the back and forth, the attention and the constant reminders that come every time they turn on a tv. hopefully the commercials stop. you know? yeah, i think we have to accept that whoever wins isn't going to ruin our country, and we just have to kind of close that divide that's been going on through the election. it's one of the few things voters on both sides seem to agree on. yeah.
6:05 am
and look, if pennsylvania is the tipping point here, if the count here will determine the next president, what election officials have told us, marcus, is that it won't take until the weekend like it did four years ago. but it will still take a day or two before there is an official winner here. yeah. all right, well, look, two big names there a lot of people are talking about right now when it comes to the presidency. but i think we all feel like we've been on the campaign trail for quite some time. all right. jake gray for us in pennsylvania, thanks, jay. very well said. very true. well, unfortunately, businesses in some bay area neighborhoods are also bracing for the possibility of civil unrest in the aftermath of this election day. this is new video from late last night in downtown oakland near broadway. businesses there boarding up their storefronts as a precaution. oakland police are already preparing with additional patrols and mutual aid from neighboring agencies that remain on standby. now, two of the most closely watched bay
6:06 am
area races will decide the future of leadership in oakland and san francisco. one is the mayor's race. the other is a recall election today in the bay. ginger conejero saab joins us live in san francisco this morning. and here we have it. this last minute push from five candidates. it's all coming down to the wire in san francisco. that's right, laura. and that's really something that you can see and feel on the streets of san francisco. there is engagement from the people here, people campaigning, holding up signs at major intersections for example, during the morning commute. there are also just a plethora of signs on people's homes in the different neighborhoods. you can see who they are supporting. you can really feel that spirit of it, but with san francisco's ranked choice voting law, it can be anyone's game. now there are four contested, four candidates that are vying for mayor london breed's seat. they have debated. they have campaigned, and they have made their case for months
6:07 am
now. supervisor ahsha safai was the first to throw his name in the race. philanthropist daniel lurie, board of supervisors president aaron peskin and former supervisor and interim■l mayor mark farrell rounding up the top five candidates for san francisco mayor. breed's challengers have run on a campaign of change for the city, focusing on turning around the city's issues surrounding crime, homeless encampments and open air drug use. the incumbent mayor has made a case that she has laid the groundwork for revitalizing a come back for the city. now, mark farrell hit with a historic campaign ethics fine on the eve of election day, farrell is agreeing to pay $108,000. it comes after he illegally funded his candidacy through a committee he created for a separate purpose. now, farrell says, the settlement was over a, quote, accounting error that we corrected and publicly disclosed months ago. now, san francisco uses ranked choice voting, and under ranked choice voters ranked the candidates one
6:08 am
through ten, with one being their first choice. if a candidate gets more than half the votes after the first choices are tallied, then we have a winner and the election is over. but if no one gets a majority, the candidate with the least number of votes is eliminated and their supporters second choice vote is now tallied. that process continues until one candidate wins the majority of the vote. it was through ranked choice voting that oakland mayor sheng thao was elected as oakland's mayor two years ago today. she faces a recall vote along with alameda county district attorney pamela price. if tao is recalled, a special election will be held within four months to elect a new mayor for oakland. and as for da pamela price, if she is recalled, the alameda county supervisors will appoint an interim da to serve until 2026, then another da would need to serve the rest of price's term, which runs through 2028. now, there are further complexities to consider if mayor thao and da
6:09 am
price are recalled, but the first step at least happens today. laura, both for oakland voters and san francisco voters, we will have to watch and wait to see what they have to say in san francisco, ginger conejero saab today in the bay, very big day in the bay area. thanks, ginger, and remember to get all the updates on the races. make sure and download our free nbc bay area app. it is available for all smartphones. you can find it on your app store. 608 this morning, taking a live look out in dublin there. oh, look at that. the sun trying to peek through. beautiful there. meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect. beautiful looking out there. but today we need to brace for the potential high winds out there. yes, it's going to be very windy going into the afternoon. at least for now. it is calm and we are bracing for also a beautiful sunrise. so maybe get those cameras ready. i do think with the clouds coming by and also the sun rising, we are going to see some beautiful hues across the bay area, at least for a little while as we go throughout
6:10 am
the day. mostly sunny and temperatures in san jose from the upper 50s at 9:00 to the low 70s for later today. overall, the temperatures will be very comfortable, with a high of 75 expected in concord, as well as much of the north bay, santa rosa, napa and novato. 75 and 71, in san francisco. but as we mentioned, it will become very gusty later this evening, so take some time to prep for that as well. heading over to you, mike. you've got a look at where you can find some lower gas prices. yeah, it's election day. we've reached a new low price in livermore. we now have 367 at springtown gas on bluebell drive. so congratulations. if you voted for that. it's the south bay. a new leader there is big box in sunnyvale. 389 at costco on lawrence station road. at the bottom here we have the peninsula the best we can find is in burlingame. it's 419 at ana gas on broadway. you can go remember to gasbuddy.com and check your area or the area where you're going to fuel up on the roadways. we're looking at pretty much green sensors and
6:11 am
normal flow for most of the areas. outstanding is this red stretch of sensors. north 87 is a big backup. now. there may be two crashes, but it sounds like there's duplicate reports north and north 87 between curtner and downtown san jose. and two lanes are blocked at some period in that stretch. there's a lot of debris. no word on injuries, but we'll see how long this will take. i'll get an update from chp. that's the slow drive back to you. perfect. we'll check back with you. thank you. mike 610 right now in california, voters will decide several important state propositions. coming up, some of the major decisions at stake that may change our direction at state and our quick guide that may help you cut through some of the campaign clutter. a warning this morning from shop owners and store owners about a possible price hike. we'll tell you all about that. let's go out to the futures this morning, and i'll be honest with you, i can't see them, but you can. so you make your own decision. thank you. laura, all right. let's see how they hold today. all right. so maybe you've already turned in
6:12 am
your ballot or you will today. how about you treat yourself the freebies? you can score this election day. keep it right here. you're watching today in the bay.
6:13 am
6:14 am
let's get a look at napa. we are going to have some gusty winds
6:15 am
picking up this afternoon, but it does start out with a light wind and temperatures in the upper 50s. we're headed for the mid 70s for today. watching out for that red flag warning in the high fire danger. more on that in an hour by hour forecast coming up. and i'm showing you the backup at the bay bridge. it's filled in all lanes. just so you know, that's a standard flow approaching the bay bridge. unpleasant news for the south bay, though. we have more lanes blocked north 87 approaching downtown san jose. we'll show you the backup and we'll hopefully give you some progress coming up. well good morning. very happy election day to you. wall street may take a pause over these next couple of days. weighed out the result, which, remember, may not come for quite some time. boeing has reached a deal with its mechanics. the workers have agreed to a contract, so that's a huge weight lifted off the economy. palantir, that mysterious company up in palo alto, says so many government agencies and others are using its ai. it's posted huge profits. so watch this stock to move today. speaking of ai, meta has
6:16 am
reversed course. will now allow defense contractors and others associated with the u.s. military to use its artificial intelligence in a posting it calls for, quote, responsible and ethical use. canada, britain, new zealand and australia also get access in north carolina. yesterday, donald trump, in his last campaign appearances, promised new tariffs on mexican products if mexico doesn't close the border, starting at 25%, running up to 100%. in other words, doubling the price of any product that comes out of xico. that could be cars like bmw, ford, levi's, jeans, coffee, and of course, hundreds of food products. the national retail federation just issued a warning yesterday, one day before election day. the prices americans pay will skyrocket under trump's tariffs. and that was before the mexico announcement. here's that report. the nrf says the tariffs would add 78 billion in cost to clothing, toys, furniture and appliances. those would be hit
6:17 am
hardest, says the report. well, we know housing is expensive. the national association of realtors says the average age of a home buyer is now 56 years old, the oldest it's ever been. worse, the average age of a first time home buyer 38. also the oldest it's ever been in the 80s. the average first time home buyer was in their late 20s. now it's more likely to be a single woman, not a family as well. the ts to a lack of inventory, high interest rates, and student loans as the culprits. speaking of interest rates, the fed starts a two day. interest rate meeting tomorrow. that's unusual. they usually go tuesday and wednesday, not wednesday thursday. but you know there's an election. so they delayed it a day. that means we should see an interest rate reduction come thursday. that's good to know. it is. all right. thanks, guy. you bet. well, turning back to our election day coverage, a live look this morning at our state capitol in sacramento. in addition to the
6:18 am
presidential race, there are a lot of state proposition voters are deciding on this year. want to run through just a few of them for you, if given the green light. prop three would amend the state constitution by removing language stating that marriage is only between a man and a woman. voters are also deciding on proposition 33. if approved, it would expand the ability for local governments in california to enact rent control on residential properties. prop 34 also hangs in the balance. this election day. if voters say yes, it would require certain health care entities to follow new rules about how they spend revenue they earn from a federal drug discount program. proposition 36 is also on the ballot this year. if approved, it would allow people convicted of possessing certain drugs or committing thefts valued at under $950 to face felony charges. if you're still not sure what you're voting on this year, we're trying to help you move forward. our website has one minute or less explainers on
6:19 am
each of the ten state propositions on this year's ballot. visit nbcbayarea.com. just click on our homepage. former san francisco mayor willie brown hosting a free luncheon at john's grill. this is near union square. the annual event is intended to bring everyone together who works in politics, regardless of their views. many candidates stopped by as well. people can stop by for that free meal between 1130 this morning and 130 this afternoon. and that's not all you can get for free today. krispy kreme wants to help sweeten your day. there are free glazed donuts today. you don't even need to prove that you voted. but let's be honest, they're also handing out their own. i voted stickers. there's something sweet for you there that looks so good. i vote for the plain glazed. there we go. yeah i do. you can't be unanimous. hot. so we agree on that. if you voted today, you get a fresh donut. and if you voted earlier, then you get a donut from earlier. i'm kidding,
6:20 am
i'm kidding. it's like, hey, go get that coveted sticker. like kari is already wearing. there we go. all right, well, we are seeing a lot of people getting up, heading out. just a few more minutes until those polls open. as you're stepping out the door. it's 50 degrees in palo alto and in san jose, in walnut creek, 47 as you're heading out and we're going to see temperatures in the mid to 70s for much of the east bay, 75 in concord, as well as 75 in napa and in santa rosa, san francisco. today, 71 degrees and low 70s for the south bay. really nice, but you'll notice it will become windy and tomorrow it's going to be very gusty, especially in the morning. and temperatures will be just a touch cooler with upper 60s and low 70s more of the same weather on friday, with a cool morning start and a mild afternoon. but we are already seeing some clouds pushing down from the north with a low pressure system that is bringing some rain for areas in the pacific northwest. we're just getting those clouds and then
6:21 am
high pressure to the south is fighting back any rain chances that we have, but it's also increasing that pressure gradient that's going to make it windy as we go throughout today. so look at the time that the red flag warning begins at 11:00. napa will already start to see those wind gusts, and it will be coming through the sacramento delta. and the sacramento valley, through the delta and across the bay area. with those winds increasing this evening. look at how strong it's going to be overnight. this is 1:00 in the morning and we're seeing 35 45 mile per hour winds. that will be even higher for the hills and mountains and elevations above 1000ft into the day tomorrow. gradually the wind is going to calm down and that's when we'll start to see that fire danger decreasing. and we're headed for the low 70s for the next few days. the weekend is looking nice, a mostly sunny sky and calmer winds, highs near 70 degrees, and the possibility of rain coming back to the forecast early next week with cooler temperatures for san francisco, it will be a windy
6:22 am
day and those wind gusts continue at least through early tomorrow and highs near 70 degrees at least through the end of the week. so we're watching all of these changes. mike, now you're calling for an alert for the san jose yes i am. let me make the distinction. i'm calling for the alert because the backup is quickly building. chp has shut down all northbound lanes of 87 approaching downtown because of this crash going on, but they have not called an alert. chp has not. i think they're doing a traffic break to clear, but we've seen this backup really build over three miles, getting closer to five. now as you're traveling north, it's back to capital expressway. the ripple i'm looking at is folks will see the backup from here or other sources, and they're going to probably get over capital expressway to 101, which was just easing up from its first build up. so that will cause an earlier slowdown for folks traveling through that portion of san jose. as well. we'll track the clearing on north 87, but right now all northbound lanes are blocked toward downtown. the rest of the bay, including this part of contra costa county, a subtle build, a steady build, a
6:23 am
predictable build. back to you. thanks, mike. it turns out there is such a thing as a free ride, at least when it comes to election day. coming up next on today in the bay, the local transit agency is helping you get to the polls. and a reminder for you. tomorrow, the warriors travel to boston to take on the celtics. be sure to tune in to nbc sports bay area for complete game day coverage, starting at 3:30 p.m. with the warriors pregame live hosted by bonta hill. tipoff is at 4:30 p.m. with the warriors postgame live following immediately after the game. stick around here. we've got a lot more ahead for you on today in the bay.
6:24 am
6:25 am
san francisco is in crisis and we need real experienced leadership. we need mark farrell. our interim mayor who got things done. who showed we can clear tent encampments, fight crime, and address the drug crisis. who will make the tough choices for our city's future. "i'm mark farrell. i'm running for mayor because san francisco deserves better." "i'm ready to deliver that change on day one."
6:26 am
mark farrell. a proven leader with the experience we need. there are zero days to election day, so we're turning to decision 2024 and you might be heading to the polls. the vta is offering you a free ride today. free bus, light rail and paratransit rides will be available to polls and drop box locations in santa clara county from seven this morning, when the polls open through 8 p.m. tonight. when they close, when someone gets on the bus or the train, they tell the bus operator, i'm going to my voting poll, or i'm going to the registrar of voters to vote, and there won't be any fee. likewise, when you get on a light rail train and a fare inspector asks you for fare if you are going to the voting polls, and you let them know that that's what you're doing. but if your polling place is not
6:27 am
along a vta route, some ride services are also trying to help get you to the polls. ubers get out the vote and lyft lyft up voting access program are offering discounted and sometimes free rides to polling centers. today, i put that information on my social media as well, so check those apps. no excuses folks, vote. no excuses. you're right. thanks. well, we've got a lot more ahead for you. at 630 this morning, including the sun is beginning to rise on a historic election day. voters are set to decide the next president of the united states. our scott mcgrew breaking down harris and trump's final push to voters.
6:28 am
6:29 am
it takes a rebel to make something beautiful. beauty takes courage. it's an act of joy.
6:30 am
so resist the ordinary. and embrace the wow. at floor & decor. and i'm marcus washington. a big day here in the bay area and across the country, for that matter, on the cusp of a historic day when it comes to the presidency. a lot of folks are voting, but also a big topic today. the weather here in the bay area. that's right. we've got a red flag warning. kari is monitoring that for us. yeah, we are starting out with a calm wind for now, but at 11:00 we'll start to see the winds increasing in some of our hills, as well as a lot of the mountains across the region. and we're going to see that increasing our fire danger with the low humidity and the high wind. we may see some of those gusts topping over 50mph. so we are seeing the pg&e psp s watch
6:31 am
in effect, if you are signed up for those alerts, you would have already gotten notice if you will be affected by this, but it's for all of these counties in orange. there are at least a few customers here and there that will be under that psp s watch, and you do want to make sure you're prepared for that possibility of not having power. as we go into the next couple of days and dublin, as you're heading out, it's in the upper 50s. we're going to see those highs in the low 70s. now, temperature wise, it's going to be really nice, very comfortable across the bay area with highs in the low to mid 70s and some upper 70s for the south county. but we will talk more about the impacts of those high winds coming up in the full microclimate forecast. laura marcus. sounds good. we'll check back with you. kari. well, many california voters have already returned their ballots, but if you are among the people voting in person, the weather could change where you vote today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us from our newsroom this morning where a fire danger actually shut down some polling places. right. so if you are voting in person in napa or in oakland,
6:32 am
you might have to go to a backup polling place. let's get right to that outage map. those green and yellow dots are the outages that are happening right now. but if you look at the next map, those areas in orange are where public safety power shut offs are planned for the hours ahead. that is, once the winds start to kick up and the temperatures get a little bit warmer. we have new video this morning of a voting center in oakland that is now boarded up in anticipation. this is joaquin miller park, which is within that red flag warning area. kari was talking about. the alameda county registrar of voters is advising people who are planning to vote at joaquin miller park to go to the vote center at montera middle school instead. that is over on ascot drive in oakland. now, you can also drop off your ballot at any drop box. don't forget to sign the back of the envelope, but that is of course, true for all of us. napa county has been preparing for possible power
6:33 am
outage as as well, and the good news is that the public safety power shut offs, the psps are expected after the polls close. if that changes, pg&e and the napa registrar of voters office say they are ready. we've provided them with generators out of an abundance of caution. we don't expect this wind event to impact them during the election. it's not going to prevent us from continuing to count, and we're secure. and i don't believe that's just in napa county. i believe that's true in all 58 counties in california now, about 20,000 pg&e customers were warned to be ready to lose power. more than half of them here in our bay area counties. now, the public safety power outages could start maybe as early as seven tonight. the polls, of course, close at 8:00. but the good news is that because every california voter gets a ballot in the mail, according to a firm that tracks turnout about a third of us have
6:34 am
already turned them in. laura. so true. thank you very much, chris. well, the two major candidates for president made their final appeals before the big vote. and vice president harris blanketed pennsylvania. former president trump hitting michigan and north carolina and then pennsylvania. so it's all going to be, as you well know, marcus, pennsylvania, pennsylvania going to be the key. every american voter knows pennsylvania. i suspect most leaders in nato know pennsylvania. the chinese, who fear tariffs. the taiwanese who fear china. no. pennsylvania. the men and women in the trenches of ukraine probably have heard of pennsylvania. so here's one last time. you're going to hear two candidates for president explaining why they should be president. let us really be true to what our campaign has been about from the very start. and on that i say, please let us be intentional about building community. let us be intentional about building
6:35 am
coalitions. think of this, though. we're just one day away. we've been waiting for this. i've been waiting for years for this. and so have you. and so have you. we've all been waiting for years. one day you got to show up. i don't want any money. i don't want anything. just show up and bring your vote. and if you have somebody else that got a little lazy, bring that person to brand new pictures from maricopa county, arizona, where ballot processing is ready to go. this, of course, was the center of election lies in 2020, and the so-called cyber ninja investigation, where they tried to prove there were ballots made of bamboo showing they were from asia. there was no evidence of wrongdoing. there's been no evidence of any widespread problems of any kind anywhere. this election day, either. a few hiccups. yeah. you bet. the
6:36 am
biggest problem will be voter patience. the elections director for nbc says worst case, it could take a week to find out who is the next president. professor nolan higdon got up early to join us this election day. nolan, i'm going to say the same thing i said to the previous guest in the 5 a.m. hour, and that is, will you please join me in encouraging people to be patient? absolutely. democracy takes time and we want to get it right. so we're going to have to be patient. it's exciting to see all these people turn out to vote, but it's going to take some time to count those votes. so yes, i would support you in that. election day really has changed over the years. it used to be we all went to the to the ballot all together, and certainly we've seen some long lines today and people like to do it that way. and by all means they have every right to. but as chris was pointing out, lots of mail in lots of early voting. has that increased participatio? yeah, some of the early data seems to indicate that when given the option to vote by mail, people are more likely to
6:37 am
vote. so i think it's a great sign for our democracy that we figured out ways to get people to participate more often. and then the gender gap is what we've been talking about. all elections, presidential elections have had a noticeable gender gap. this one seems to be one of the biggest. absolutely, yes. pollsters are expecting there to be a much bigger gender gap than we're traditionally used to, with the democrats taking on more of the women vote, particularly young women and expecting the republicans to get more of the male vote. so it is an interesting divide we're seeing here amongst the electorate in these early polls and surveys. we'll see how it works out. doctor nolan higdon, i appreciate you getting up early. we'll check back with you in a couple of days or possibly next week when we know what's what's happening next. well, the fbi and other american agencies are warning there will be an active effort by russia and even iran to disrupt. maybe not just today, election day, but the days following with false information about cheating and fake grassroot efforts to stir
6:38 am
dissension, even violence. a prosecutor in philadelphia, meantime, has gone viral with his bare knuckled warning to people who might want to spread lies or stir up problems in his city. but i also want to be clear anybody who thinks it's time to play militia f around and find out anybody who thinks it's time to insult, to deride, to mistreat, to threaten people f around and find out. we do have the cuffs. we do have the jail cells. we do have the philly juries, and we have the state prisons. all right. which one of these men is going to be speaker of the house? a reminder, while we're occupied with the presidential election, the entire house of representatives and much of the senate up for a vote just into our newsroom as well. republican candidate for vice president, jd vance, just walked out of a voting booth in ohio. we appreciate you coming out to see one of the great traditions, of
6:39 am

tracking what we can expect out there. looks a little hasty out there this morning. yeah, we've got some clouds rolling in, and it will become mostly partly cloudy as we go into the day. now we're going to see temperatures for many of us as we head out the door in the upper 40s low 50s. it's 50, in palo alto and 52 in san francisco. for now, the wind is calm and we're starting out with cool temperatures as we take a look at fremont and what to expect over the next several hours. going into the low 60s at 10:00 and low 70s by 1:00 this afternoon. overall, it's going to be a really comfortable day, but once that wind begins to increase, it will become very dangerous for those fire weather conditions we'll see into tonight. so i'll have more on that in a few minutes. mike, you're starting with a note about san jose school busses. yeah, heads up for parents of kids who ride busses for san jose unified this crash. the good news this crash on north 87 has cleared all lanes. these sensors will light back up, but at 87 and curtner, that's where the bus yard is. and i saw a
6:42 am
note from chp saying folks in the school district were calling saying the busses were getting jammed up by traffic trying to get off the freeway. and out of the backup. that should be alleviated as lanes start to move again. those busses may be a little bit late. i'm going to just extend that. the school district has said nothing about that, but i have seen the chatter online, so just be prepared folks. they will be able to move through the area. we have more slowing on north 101 and north 8587. a lot more slowing than you might expect because of the earlier crash, which did clear the rest of the bay moves very smoothly as we look toward the east bay. a note there's a concert tonight in oakland, so just keep that in mind if that's where you drive after work. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. this is already a historic election day in the east bay. at least when it comes to young voters. we're going to meet some of the select few who are under 18 who for the first time ever, will be making a difference in certain key races. plus, we are just under 20 minutes before the polls open here in california. what you need to know before you head out

as we take a look at morgan hill, the wind is calm, but we are going to be under a microclimate weather alert starting at 11:00. as the wind increases. and here we'll go from mid 40s to mid 60s. quick
6:46 am
warm up as we will have a very mild day. we'll get a look at our hour by hour wind forecast for all of our microclimates coming up. and again, in case you missed it, good news. northbound 87. all lanes are clear now heading into downtown. the earlier crash is cleared from the area just north of curtner, but the backup extends basically down toward highway 85. we're seeing traffic ripple around a bit. we'll track 101 and 85 coming up. but now it's time to turn back to our election coverage. here we go. polls are set to just open in minutes. we have a clock ticking down. perhaps today in the bob redell joins us live from the santa clara. there it is. the santa clara registrar of voters in san jose. so here we go. it's time. what do voters need to know, bob? we got 15 minutes before the polls open here in california at 7:00. they close tonight at 8:00. we got evelyn mendez here with the registrar of voters in santa clara county. we're in their main office here
6:47 am
in san jose. good morning to you. before we talk about what people need to know before they come out to vote, you said something interesting earlier that you think more people will be voting in person this year. why? yeah, we've been seeing a lot of people come in excited to be part of the process to actually walk in and turn their ballot in or walk in and get their stickers. so it's a little bit different than last time. and do you think maybe it's because we're not in covid anymore? i mean, that has something to do with it, but i think this is a historic election that people want to be a part of. so they're they want to be involved in democracy and come in and vote and experience. yeah. okay. so let's say you haven't registered to vote. it is not too late to register on election day, correct? yeah. you can go to any vote center or come into our office. you can register to vote and vote on the same day. okay. and you get a provisional ballot. yeah. we'll give you one. it actually gets tracked or monitored and i mean processed. sorry. afterwards. and then you have until eight tonight. if you are doing a mail in you want it postmarked by today. and you said earlier make sure that that mailbox they
6:48 am
might not be picking up the mail, you know, they might be picking up the mail before 8:00. so make sure you get it in by eight tonight. yeah. we want to make sure people know the deadline. the 8:00 deadline is not for the post office. it is for our drop boxes. so the official drop box is from our county. they're all around the county. we have 109. we have a list of them on our website. people can find the closest one. and if you're mailing it through the us postal service, you want to make sure it's postmarked by today. and it's in a week from today. yes, it has to be postmarked by today. i know we're going over details, but these are really important. and my last question for somebody who is not registered or who is registered and eligible, who isn't going to vote today, what would you say to that person? we want to make sure that they know that they don't want to have to vote on every single thing, because some of the things might be confusing, and that might be the part that's intimidating them, but we just want to make sure they get their ballot in. they vote today. if you're 18 or if you're 100, your ballot is exactly the same, equal to everyone else. so make sure they get their vote in. that's a great message, evelyn. thank you
6:49 am
very much. happy election day. i know they got a lot of work ahead of them as these ballots should be coming in. they here in santa clara county probably won't have them counted until the end beginning of next month, which is december 5th. reporting, by the way, polls again open in 12 minutes here in the state of california to close at 8:00. and you you heard her as many ways to vote reporting live here in san jose. bob redell today in the bay. yeah, big, big day. yeah. and if you're in line by 8:00, you still get the right to vote. so there you go. thanks, bob. well, you know what? today, some voting history in the east bay. this election marks the first time that students under 18 will be eligible to vote. it's actually very specific. this is the first election in which 16 and 17 year olds can vote in their local school board elections in oakland and berkeley unified. there are about 1200 registered to vote. we talked with two student directors who say it's about time. i think our vote matters more than the parents or the staff that's voting. you know, our our lives are directly getting affected day in and day
6:50 am
out by the decisions these people are making. considering the amount of work and information that we take in at school about our elections and about our government, i think that we're more than prepared to take on this role. oakland and berkeley voters approve youth suffrage years ago, but this is the first election that teens can actually vote. and today, voters in neighboring albany will decide whether to grant similar voting rights to 16 and 17 year olds. it's really cool to see. i like that idea. yeah, right. directly affects them. and you think about the school board and so why not start with things you're familiar with? yeah, very much so. okay. meteorologist kari hall very familiar with the weather here. all those microclimates, and then this pending red flag warning. yeah. so it should not at all affect you getting to the polls today. we are looking at a few clouds this morning clearing out for the afternoon. and gradually the wind will be picking up as we go throughout today. the red flag warning begins at 11 a.m. and that's where in some of our hills and mountains, we'll start to feel those breezes increasing. but
6:51 am
later on tonight is when we'll see the peak of those winds where the mountain wind gusts may top 60 plus miles per hour. and in the valleys it's going to be more of a 30 to 40 mile per hour wind. so even before you head out this morning, take a little time to assess what's going on around the home, secure anything that may get blown over because we could not only see impacts to power, but also some downed trees. and of course, the elevated fire danger of high concern. our temperatures, though, are looking pretty good. we're up to 74 in south san jose and 72 for the high in cupertino. much of the east bay in the low to mid 70s with a walnut creek topping out at 74 and 73. in oakland, also 73 in redwood city in daly city, 67 today, san francisco, up to 71 downtown and in the mission district 70 degrees and 75 for napa to novato, santa rosa as well. so we are looking at some mild temperatures, but these clouds are coming in from the
6:52 am
north. and what's happening is we have this storm system in this area of low pressure to the north, but also high pressure, which is much more of an influence on our weather to the south. but when you have high and low pressure, close together, it makes the air flow very quickly. so we're seeing those winds that will be increasing coming in from the north. and here we go into the afternoon, into the evening when those winds are 25 30mph. but these areas in bright pink, some of the higher elevations will have even stronger wind gusts that will continue overnight, get more intense. look at santa rosa 2:00 in the morning. we're going to have 44 mile per hour wind gusts, and we're still seeing some of those breezy winds continue into early tomorrow. temperature wise looking ahead we'll be in the mid 70s for san jose. slightly cooler for the weekend, but we will have even lower temperatures early next week as we have the possibility of rain returning to the forecast. but as of now, with it being windy, low humidity and very dry vegetation, that fire danger
6:53 am
will be very high as we head through thursday. mike, you are tracking the ripple effect through the south bay. we are kari. we're looking over here. north 87. we had a full traffic stop for a period of time and that really added to the backup because it's just as 87 shows, the build. so basically the entire stretch from 85 is jammed up. some are taking 85. i see a heavier flow of traffic heading over towards 17. north 101 is really seeing a bump up as folks come in out of south county, as well as join in from capitol expressway. so that portion is a little tougher as well. but everything else north of san jose looks okay for the south bay. southbound routes throughout the east bay are doing all right. contra costa county standard, back to you. thank you very much, mike. it is 652 and happening now. two investigations now underway surrounding the sonoma county coast after two deadly boating accidents, both were in bodega bay, with the latest happening less than 24 hours ago. investigators say in that incident, two men were on board. one was found dead, another is still missing. a second incident happened over the weekend. the family of six was out crabbing
