that fueled this campaign. right now, at 6:00, kamala harris concedes after donald trump's historic win. we're live in washington with what's next. ahead of inauguration day and what the following four years could look like. plus, the oakland airport changed its name to attract more travelers. but then sfo sued the legal battle now heading before a federal judge today. plus, the fire danger in the bay area is starting to diminish, but it's not completely gone. meteorologist kari hall is tracking changing conditions. this is today in the bay. good thursday morning to you. 6:00 right now. thanks for starting your day with us. we appreciate

you. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. we all appreciate you. mike, got to get a look at that commute. caught up in just a bit. we saw a little backup starting a little bit earlier out there, building up. we'll talk about that. but first let's talk about that forecast too. so some good news for us weather wise here. the red flag warning. we're going to see that go away a little bit later today. yes. in one hour we'll see that expire. so the countdown is on. but you know what. we're still going to have the elevated fire danger until we get a good soaking rain here in the bay area, which is going to not likely happen for the next several days. but we will have a chance of rain as we go into early next week. taking a look at our current wind speeds. still pretty breezy on mount diablo. 16 mile per hour winds along with the coastline, but mount saint helena, which was yesterday at 88mph, has come down to 26. so we are seeing some improvement there and our temperatures are headed for the low to mid 70s for this afternoon. it's going to be a really nice one, very comfortable with napa high up to

7375 in morgan hill and 71 in san francisco. these temperatures continue into tomorrow as well. and we'll talk about the end of the weekend rain we have coming our way. mike, you look at the commute coming into san jose. yeah, we had just shown you dublin looks pretty standard. a beautiful sunrise westbound picking up the volume on schedule. here's 101. i know it's a little blurry for our shot here, but it's enough to show how the density is building right there for 101. look at this. we have a typical area with the slowing, but it's really compressed down toward just around alum rock right there. so a little bit different flow. i haven't seen any incidents and it looks like things are sorting themselves out. so sometimes that happens even when one person hits their brakes. we'll track that typical build for these brake lights. westbound highway four and westbound 80 showing more build in toward richmond. back to you. thanks so much, mike. turning now to developments surrounding donald trump's triumph in the 2024 presidential election. in the wake of a concession speech from vice president harris. we

are beginning to get a picture of whattrump administration may look like. the president elect is defining some of the key issues. he says he'll make a priority today in the bay's. jay gray joins us live from washington with a closer look. and of course, what comes next? good morning jay. hey good morning laura. good morning marcus. next for president elect trump is shifting from campaign mode to transition mode. we expect to learn in the next few days. some of the people he may have tabbed for key positions in his cabinet, advisers in the white house, that as vice president, harris urges her supporters to stay the course, keep up the fight. but also find some common ground. now. a day later, it's not the speech vice president harris had hoped or planned to make while i concede this election, i do not concede the fight that fueled this campaign, a fight that was by any measure,
6:04 am
a political knockout. in the end, not even close. president elect trump sweeping the swing states, knocking down the so-called blue wall, winning with men and first timers at the ballot box while expanding his support from black, latino and young voters. and then when he won, i was like, oh my god, let's make america great again. the former and now future president promising a federal shakeup. on day one, i will launch the largest deportation program in american history. he's also proposed eliminating the department of education promise to impose tariffs on imports. stop american support for the war in ukraine. and again end u.s. participation in the paris climate agreement. i think this nation voted without a conscience, and i think there's going to be a huge case of buyer's remorse. harris, acknowledging the frustration and disappointment of supporters. now, i know folks are feeling and experiencing a range of emotions right now. i get it. but we must accept the

results of this election. results. many on both sides say, are unprecedented in u.s. political history. and president biden did congratulate president elect trump during a phone call yesterday, also inviting him to the white house for that traditional meeting. you see, between the outgoing and incoming president, though, there's no clear indication of when or even if that may take place. what we do know, laura, is we expect to hear from president biden in about two hours or so on the election and the transition. yeah, exactly. we'll hear kari that live here. jay, before you go, it's really interesting. vice president harris. president biden, president trump elect, have all talked about unity after we know it has been a very contentious campaign in reality. what does that really look like moving forward? yeah. you know, i mean, it's fresh enough to remember that there was a lot of back and forth in the final days of this
6:06 am
campaign and a lot of name calling, and just it got very nasty toward the end. so it will be interesting. it's clear that the vice president and president want to stick with tradition, offering this olive branch of getting together, making the phone calls. if they do meet in the white house, joe biden and donald trump, it would be the first time, because when he left the office, he did not host that meeting, did not go to the inauguration. we know that president biden has said he will attend the inauguration in january, so it's really just contingent on how much president elect trump, as well as his team, want to participate in all of this. and it's still not clear. he did speak on election night or early, early in the morning after the election about unity, about being a president for everyone. and apparently that was some discussion on the phone calls as well. so it will be interesting to see how it plays out, that's for sure. yeah. well, let's definitely

hope for a smooth transition for our nation. jay gray, thanks for the very latest. i know it's been a busy week for you. well, san francisco san francisco election workers will arrive at city hall in just a few hours at 7:00 this morning. they are actually counting the ballots that will eventually decide who will lead the city next. now there is an update scheduled for later today. at the moment, danielle lowery is ahead of incumbent mayor london breed. this is in the ranked choice voting race. election officials say that workers counted more than a third of the total ballots cast so far. now we are expecting a fifth batch of results around 4:00 in the afternoon today. this will give us a clearer idea of the standing. political experts say it's the insider versus the outsider with breed finishing out her first full term and lor, a nonprofit founder, spending $8 million of his own money to finance his campaign. we caught up with him walking through chinatown, thanking supporters. feeling great, feeling great. but more votes to be counted.
6:08 am
brie thanked supporters in an email promising to uplift the city they love, but did not address the results so far. lori and mayor breed are expected to address supporters after that new report is posted. now, of course, we're tracking many more local races, including the recall races over in oakland and alameda county with the district attorney to get up to date information about that, you can download our free nbc bay area app. well, now to a live look at sfo, which is in this heated legal battle with the oakland airport. after it changed its name, and later today, that legal fight goes before a federal judge after months of back and forth. today in the bay's bob redell joins us live from the oakland airport with a little bit more of what is at stake here. good morning. bob. good morning to you, laura. yes. later this afternoon, the city of san francisco is going to ask a federal judge in sf to force oakland international behind me to stop using san francisco in its name. you might recall, earlier this year, the city and

on the path of the storm. but you say we really don't know kind of where it's going right now. yeah. so it's just going to kind of meander out there in the gulf of mexico. but you can see the outer rain bands are still having an impact on florida as we get started. this morning. so we're going to continue to track this system now a category two hurricane. and it is moving to the northwest at nine miles per hour. but look at the forecast track over the next several days. it is expected to weaken and then just kind of just wander out there in the gulf and just loop around. and this is going to happen through saturday. so after that point, maybe we'll get a better idea of exactly where some of that heaviest rainfall will be headed. but as of now, it will remain a category two. as we're starting out, this morning. clear sunrise, calmer winds in san francisco. and it's going to be a very pleasant day with temperatures going from upper 50s to upper 60s for this afternoon. and we'll talk about the weekend and when we could get some rain coming up in a few minutes. mike's been tracking

westerly direction toward the west, toward santa paula. in fact, right now, just over this home, this ranch, you can see some flames there. i'd estimate there are at least 20 30ft tall as they stretch into the sky. we've seen different pockets of hillside really catch on fire over the morning. and that's because at some points we've had those swirling winds and we've had spot fires carrying a lot of the embers from some of those smaller fires. there was a home that burned carrying that to a different direction. now a big help. overnight fire crews were able to use helicopters to drop retardant. and if you see that hill over there, that point, you can see it's covered in pink and red. that is that retardant. so it's really clear. you can see we're standing just south of santa paula right now. there's a lot of orchards. there are ranches, fire crews being able to do those preventative fire retardant drops have been a massive help to them today. we know those winds are going to stick with us at least until 4:00. changing different directions. there's low

humidity. there's a lot of winds and there's a lot of dry fuel. so firefighters focusing on protecting santa paula, reporting near santa paula, brittany hope back to you. in fact, yeah, we're sending crews from the bay area to help in the firefight out there. so we're talking about those embers being you know, tossed about because of the wind. and the santa ana winds are really strong. the red flag warning there continues until later this evening. and so we're dealing with that low humidity and extremely dry vegetation. and brush. and so we are also dealing with some of those same conditions here. but our weather is improving in the next couple of hours. take a look at what they're expecting there for those strong offshore winds into the rest of the morning, as well as the afternoon. still looking at 30 to 40 mile per hour winds in the area as we head toward noon. but then going into this evening, eventually the wind will start to relax just a bit and we're seeing a calm wind as we take a look at our current conditions across the bay area for san jose palo alto. it's also a colder
6:40 am
morning with mid to upper 40s to start, and throughout the day we'll see highs headed for the low to mid 70s. it will be a nice afternoon and the next couple of days we'll see more of the same temperatures. mike, you're starting with a new incident on the bay bridge. we've had several this morning. now the good news about this one is i haven't seen any issue as far as as far as the movement in toward treasure island, where the crash is reported near the onramp. so it may actually be off of i-80 westbound. look at this. it's a smooth drive on the span, but all this compression here, i think they've really slowed down the metering lights because there was talk of something going on inside the tunnel. we'll track that. but you saw the cars still moving there. the approach still builds through richmond and out of richmond as well. so we're watching that again. the bay bridge may have an issue. i'll wait and we'll give you the next update in just a couple of minutes. southbound 680 shows a typical build. same thing for 880. it's actually moving very smoothly through the east bay and out of the east bay building for the san mateo bridge. of course, as we look ahead today,

we continue with the daily closures. all week we've had highway nine closed between sanborn and redwood gulch at 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. complete closure, not traffic control. we do also have sharks game tonight, so no pedestrians over near the shark tank for tonight's 730 game. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. well, gas prices could go up steeply by next year. this is after a vote by the california air resources board, which the goal is to lower carbon emission from the vehicles we drive. but it could also cost us today in the bay's kris sanchez joining us now from a campbell gas station with more on what state regulators are considering. and, chris, when we talk about gas prices going up, we're just lik, oh, not again. i know we all feel the pain at the pump, but what the california air resources board is considering is less about our driving habits and more about making the producers give us cleaner fuel. but in the end, we're likely to pay the price anyway. let's take a look at the averages for today in santa clara county. it is

$4.64 a gallon or rather 456 a gallon in alameda county for 64 for 81. in san francisco. that's all higher than the average for the state, which is $4.25 and way higher than the national average of 311. these are, according to triple a statistics now, the california air resources board or carb, is preparing to vote tomorrow on an update to the state's clean air rules. specifically, the low carbon fuel standard. this would require producers to produce lower carbon fuel faster or buy credits to offset emissions. here's why the state has a goal of cutting the climate impact of the fuel that we use to drive by 20% over the next five years, and we have a lot of cars on the road, the air resources board last estimate of the cost to consumers was $0.47 a gallon by next year. now, while carb retracted that number, they have not issued a new estimate, and the state's nonpartisan
6:43 am
legislative analyst estimate was lower, but still $0.20 a gallon. so is the strategy to make gas so expensive that people finally use less gas in one way or another? well, the chair of the air resources board says the strategy is actually to push producers to offer lower carbon choices because fossil fuels have a higher carbon intensity. the fossil fuel producers need to take steps to comply with the regulation and those steps result in increased variety of fuels available and overall lower. the carbon emitted throughout our transportation sector. so the air board is under pressure, of course, from the governor and other lawmaker, but also from consumers as well. and that vote on that issue is coming up tomorrow in riverside. we'll be covering that for you as well. in campbell kris sanchez today in the bay wish you were saying today, gas prices are going way, way down. that would have been nice.
6:44 am
instead, that would have been very nice. thanks, chris. there's a lot of great things i wish you were able to say. how about trimming the tree? just ahead on today in the bay, a first look of the world's famous christmas tree, the iconic symbol of the holidays, which is now on its way to the big apple. well, speaking of the holidays, there are 48 days left until christmas. oh my goodness. it is the right time for a holiday tradition to return to san francisco. up ahead, we'll talk about how officials are partnering fun with safety. keep it here. you're watching today inhe t

that's the part that always gets me. but just in an iconic symbol of christmas will soon be on its way to new york city. within the hour, crews cut down the 11 ton norway spruce, which is going to be on display at rockefeller center. the tree hails from west stockbridge, massachusetts. it's the first tree to come from that state since 1959. it will arrive in new york city later this month ahead of the annual tree lighting ceremony. you can watch that ceremony. it's coming up on december 4th right here on nbc bay area. kelly clarkson will host the event for the second year in a row. we always see that tree there with people ice

skating in front of that. yeah, you don't have to go to new york for that. you can do it right here in the bay area. so you can lace up the skates right now hitting the ice over in union square in san francisco. it's now open. yeah. already for the season today in the bay's ginger conejero saab joins us live in the city ushering in fun, but understandably, with some safety in mind. that's right. and that's really important for the holiday season. well, an all year round. good morning, marcus and laura. the holiday ice rink at union square is a holiday tradition, and it is now open. hundreds of people came out yesterday. last night, i should say, to get their skates on and go to the rink. usher in the beginning of the holiday season. now, many are familiar with the safeway holiday ice rink in the heart of union square. whether you are someone who makes skating a holiday tradition or not now, the hope, however, goes beyond the fun. safety is a key concern during the holidays, and the most recent high profile crime came last month, when
6:49 am
would be robbers attempted to crash their car through the front door of louis vuitton. they did so with police stationed literally a block away, so officers responded quickly and scared off the attempted robbers who drove off. nothing was stolen. yeah, there's been some news as of late. that's okay, because the safest place in san francisco is union square, and that ice rink right now is one of the safest ice rinks around. and that sense of safety was important to emphasize. police officers were on the ice last night. that's not something that you see every day to reinforce their presence. now, days after that car crash at the louis vuitton store, there were certain initiatives that were put in place to reduce crime. but that holiday ice rink is now open november 6th. it opened yesterday through january 20th. they do have special events, including the polar bear skate, which you need to look up
6:50 am
the pictures for if you're interested, but i would suggest that you also ask kari hall what the weather is going to be like that day because you're on the ice, it's already going to be cold, and if you want to take part of the polar bear skate, then you're going to definitely want to hear what kari has to say. guys. that's pretty fun. well, you teed it up because we happen to have it right here, at least for today. it looks great. so we're starting out with some nice ice skating weather, feeling a little bit cooler, california ice skating. yes, we're under sunshine and wearing short sleeves. we are going to see temperatures in the upper 60s for today in the city and then cooling off quickly, heading down to the upper 50s by 7:00. and you may be kicking off your weekend a little bit early tonight at the sharks game. we're starting out with low 60s, and then as we go late into tonight, temperatures dropping down into the low 50s. this weekend is san francisco restaurant week. it starts tomorrow. so we're going to see highs in the upper 60s enjoying
6:51 am
maybe some time out there. some of those outdoor seating on the patio. it's going to be 64. so long sleeves throughout the day and mid 60s for sunday as well. and then on monday we have the san jose veterans day parade. we'll have to watch the forecast very quickly, closely, because we are expecting some showers to come in as we go throughout monday, and highs only reaching into the upper 60s. today it will be 73, sunny, very nice and mild and a little bit warmer for parts of the north bay as well as the south county, and no change tomorrow or saturday as our highs will be about normal for this time of year. but it may be a touch cooler on saturday as we get more clouds and possibly a quick round of rain early on sunday morning. so we're going to see those showers not really measuring out to much, and it shouldn't affect any of your weekend plans. a better chance of rain on monday as this is a lot of schools are closed, people off of work and we're maybe going to some of those outdoor ceremonies and celebrations for veterans day. it's going to be a little bit
6:52 am
iffy there in terms of whether or not we'll see some rain on thursday, there is another chance of rain coming in. neither one of these systems are looking to bring us a significant amount of rainfall to end the fire season we're looking at for parts of the north bay. there could be three quarters to an inch of rainfall. most of the rest of the bay area will see about a quarter inch of rain or less. so that's on monday for the weekend. we are looking great. highs in the upper 60s and low 70s inland. cool mornings to start in a mix of sun and clouds. and then for san francisco we will see more clouds on saturday. highs in the mid 60s for the next few days. and mike you have an update on the bay bridge. yeah. good one. the hov lanes are moving. well now remember they were backed up the last time we took a look. so that indicated something going on that was around the metering light area where all the slow sensors show up. now we're starting to see some sensors loosen up. i think that's where the incident was not at treasure island, because look at that traffic pattern. we do have a

backup and a build off the maze and off the 880 overcrossing. that should start to sort out to normal the rest of the east bay looking pretty standard. we now have that build for south 680 and toward walnut creek, and again down towards sunol and pleasanton. 880 builds off of 238 all the way down toward fremont and the south bay of course, we're kicking in for 87, 85, and 101. back to you. thank you very much, mike. it is 652 and happening now. people in the bay area still in the dark due to the public safety power shutoffs, pg&e cut power to nearly 12,000 customers trying to prevent fires. most of the outages are in the north bay. crews did turn the power back on in some spots last night, and that included parts of santa clara and alameda counties. all power expected to be restored by 10:00 tonight. and we're back in just minutes with a look at our top stories this morning, including that breaking news out of southern california, where a massive wildfire wreaking havoc overnight as bay area crews have arrived there to help. we have an update on the conditions there. plus, the oakland airport changed its name to attract more travelers. but then sfo sued.

6:59 am
any trademark violation and says that the name change provides the accurate geographic location for the airport. we are following breaking news a fast moving fire in southern california is growing. this wind fueled brush fire started yesterday, but it has already burned more than 14,000 acres in moorpark and camarillo area. more than 14,000 people are evacuated, and several homes we know have been destroyed. hurting at least two people. firefighters from san jose, santa clara and gilroy are helping with the firefight. the cause is under investigation and so far, no progress has been made on containment. all right. and weather watch here for us here. the red flag warning expires in about one minute. so we are seeing the wind calming down here. and as we go throughout the day, a bit of a breeze. high temperatures in the mid 70s and we will see a mix of sun and clouds and slightly cooler temperatures for the weekend. now the commute is not over in the next minute. we in fact have a red sensor warning
