transition. president biden is pledging a peaceful transfer of power to the incoming trump administration. >> the president made his first public remarks about the election earlier today from the rose garden. he praised vice president harris for running an inspired campaign. he also shared the accomplishments of his administration. >> we have 74 days to finish the term, our term. let's make every day count. that's the responsibility we have to the american people. >> nbc news washington correspondent yamiche alcindor joins us now. the president spoke for about seven minutes today. he said, quote, setbacks are unavoidable, but giving up is unforgiveable. what stands out to you from his speech? >> reporter: president biden was trying to do two things, honor the sadness courses through the democratic party and giving people a mission and purpose for how to move forward. in that vein he was talking about this is a country that

believes peaceful transitions of power and it solidifies the integrity of our elections. he talked about the fact that he thought vice president harris did a formidable job in running and said it's not the end. people can go forward and know they have power to continue the fight if they were backing vice president harris. definitely trying to i think console democrats and tell the country we'll be okay. also telling republicans and president-elect trump that they're now welcome for the transition here. >> you have so reporting on democrats trying to grapple with vice president harris' loss. they're pointing fingers at everything from president biden to immigration to what they consider the old guard of the democratic party. tell us about the conversations you've had. >> reporter: that's right. there is a lot of soul searching going on inside the democratic party right now. there's a lot of finger pointing. you have senator bernie sanders saying the democratic party has

abandoned the working class and now the working class abandoned the democratic party. some people are pointing fingers at president biden saying he should never have run for a second term and dropped out earlier. some were pointing to adviser at the top of vice president harris' campaign, saying it was an obama level talent and didn't understand the candidate they were dealing with. then you have people saying the vice president should have talked more about the economy, more about kitchen table issues and less about the president-elect. one person said they feel like this could be a decade loss for democrats because they're looking at 2028 and 2032 to see if democrats will have a presidential pick that will resonate with the country the way that president-elect trump did. a lot of conversations and a lot of emotions.

answering questions from reporters ask if donald trump asks you to keep leave your post will you? he said no. he's in his job for the rest of his term. president trump has been critical of the fed. he said he thinks he knows more than people at the federal reserve and he wants to weigh in whether you should raise or cut interest rates. >> that last rate cut was half a percentage point. this is a quarter. how should we look at that? >> the fed thinks it's getting back to normal inflation. it's eyeing a strong job market. still eyeing inflation numbers that are a little higher than normal. you don't want to cut interest rates in too much in what is a strong economy. the fed's job is a duel mandate. it has to keep prices stable and

employment strong. that's what they're trying to do. >> is the next meeting december? >> december. >> could they cut rates again? >> they could cut rates or they could pause. 70% of people think the -- the betting numbers are that people think they'll cut 25 basis points. some think the economy is strong enough to pause here. >> is that another quarter? sorry, i don't speak -- >> you know what, i shouldn't. i'll put money in the swear jar. i just put a dollar in there. >> christine romans, thank you. president-elect trump is spending the day at his mar-a-lago estate in florida. >> he's meeting with his transition team and returning calls from world leaders. let's bring in kristen welker. we know you spoke to the president-elect on the phone. you asked him about his calls with president biden and vice president harris. what should we know? >> reporter: first of all, former president trump, president-elect trump, saying he

believes he has a mandate in the wake of his decisive victory. here's what he said, quote, it's a mandate to bring common sense back to the country. i asked him about his phone calls with president biden and vice president harris. he described them as very nice calls, very respectful both ways. he said that when he spoke with the vice president she talked about a transition. she would like to see it be smooth as can be, and i agree with that, he said, 100%. he said it was a very, very friendly call. he said his call with president biden echoed that call with the vice president. he said that the two are planning to have lunch in the near future. just some notable details as he prepares for this transition. i asked him what he wants to do with that mandate. i said, look, you've been talking about immigration, your tariff plan. he really highlighted the need to make the border safe and

secure, indicated that would be among the first orders of business that he would tackle. i asked him, what is the price tag to this mass deportation plan you've talked about? what specifically would it look like? how would it work? he said there is no price tag. you have no choice. that was another notable part of our conversation. it was a brief conversation. lasted about 15 minutes. he notably said he spoke to about 70 world leaders. i said, 70? he said, yeah, including president zelenskyy. he said he hasn't spoken to president putin. he talked about wanting to end that war within 24 hours. a lot of people hear that and they think zelenskyy and ukraine would have to give up some territory. he believes he can get that done. a notable conversation with the new president-elect. >> kristen, you've spoken with the president-elect many times over the years.

how did he sound to you today compared to previous interviews? can you give us a vibe check? >> reporter: he sounded quite bullish in the wake of his decisive victory. he talked about the fact that there has been what some are calling a realignment, the fact that you did see an increase in support for him among various groups from latinos to young men, low propensity voters we called them on election night, as well as even some women who came out in larger numbers that you would anticipate. it was a really notable conversation and it's clear he believes, again, there's a mandate. he talked about the fact that republicans now control the senate. he said he's honored by that, honored by the role he believes he played in helping to make that happen and continues to watch what will happen in the house closely to see if in fact republicans do control all three -- two chambers of congress as well as the white

house. >> you asked also if susie wiles will be the chief of staff. what did he say? >> reporter: i did. i asked him about that. he had very strong things to say about her. she said she would certainly be a contender. she's great. i said, senator tom cotton, we're hearing is not going to enter the administration. it's our understanding he's looking at a potential leadership post in the senate. he had positive things to say about senator cotton. he says, i think he's fantastic. somebody that i would think of to join his administration. he's a very important senator and i hate to take people out of the senate. he also said senator cotton is someone who he thinks a lot of. a lot of questions about who's going to fill out his cabinet. we'll stay on top of that. >> we know you will. we hear your phone ringing. we'll let you go. thank you. >> nobody ever leaves kristen alone. time for cnbc's money

minutes. roblox is banning kids from certain places. >> steve kovak joins us now. >> reporter: nissan is selling part of its stake in mitsubishi. they said they 'restructuring to better sponge to changes in the industry as they battle slowing sales in the u.s. and china. roblox will block some children from spaces on its platform, that includes its communication feature. the gaming platform said the changes will go into effect november 13th for children under the age of 13. the changes follow multiple reports saying roblox enables child abuse through its poor safety controls. you'll soon be able to order from ihop and applebees under

we are keeping a close eye on a massive wildfire in southern california. >> the mountain fire started yesterday morning around it's burned more than 14,000 acres across ventura county. thousands have been forced to evacuate. high winds hampering firefighter efforts. let's start with nbc news correspondent morgan chesky. good to see you out there. hope you're keeping safe with your crew. the santa ana winds are fueling the fire out there. what's the latest on the conditions and the progress firefighters are making? >> reporter: yeah, the numbers are staggering here. 0% containment.

we just got a check on the latest acreage count. more than 19,000 acres have burned as a result of the mountain fire that began barely 24 hours ago. fueled entirely by those santa ana winds you mentioned, topping 50, 60 miles an hour. we covered fires before. a fire in 24 hours, to see the damage behind me and realize this took place yesterday, the day this fire began, and then tore through this neighborhood, it's absolutely frustrating, especially when you realize there are hundreds of firefighters on this fire fight doing their best to corral the flames. it's difficult with these gusty conditions not only fueling flames, but keeping the aircraft, the tankers that can drop so much water and fire retardant on these flames to battle the fires. they've been relying on

helicopters and battling these flames day and night through special technology. it's too much when you consider how fast this fire has spread. evacuations did their job. they were able to get people out of the affected areas as quickly as possible. there were two injuries reported as of yesterday. they're not believed to be serious. >> that's a little good news. morgan, since the start of this year 1 million acres have burned across california according to cal fire. that's more than three times last year's numbers. what's happening? >> reporter: combination of factors here, kate. the one thing we heard whether in northern california where some of those large fires burned earlier this year or this fire is the fact we've had back-to-back years of heavier than average rainfall which really created a lot of fuel. then when you have a somewhat dry year that fuel becomes exactly what it is, fuel for these fast-moving flames.

areas that are typically more baron became overgrown. that's one of the reasons we're seeing these fires able to move as quickly as possible and stay active as long as possible as well. kate? >> morgan, thanks. bill, let's bring you in. you're tracking the conditions in this fire zone. what are you watching for? >> the winds to come down. you can notice it with morgan. yesterday at the exact same time he would have been able to trying to hold himself in place. the winds have come down a little bit. this is the area where we have the fire, not far from oxnard. the most active fire zone is burning towards the river. it's not heading towards the populated areas here to the south anymore like it was yesterday when the winds were really blowing fast towards the ocean. here's the area where the fire is. the winds coming down from the north with low humidity. we have a chance for fire to spread rapidly the rest of the

francisco are looking ahead to what comes next, as local races still hang in the balance. s.f. chamber of commerce hosting an in-depth discussion right now. the goal to break down faults and look into how local measures impacted the national election. they're also sifting through the implications of local races. according to the department of elections, there are still 157,000 ballots need to be counted. right now, political outsider daniel lurie leads the mayor's race with 56% of the votes. that's about 108,000 votes. mayor london breed in second place with 44% of the votes. well, a war of names going on, and this is over the oakland airport. nbc bay area's bob redell reports from the san francisco bay. oakland international airport. the city of san francisco is not happy that oakland international. behind me is now san francisco bay. oakland international airport. and they want to court this afternoon to tell oakland to stop using those words. san francisco bay. at 1:00, a

federal judge in sf will consider a temporary injunction filed by the city of sf. sf city attorney david chu says the name confuses travelers and infringes on the trademark of his city's airport. san francisco international you may recall earlier this year, the city of oakland and the port of oakland changed the name of oakland international behind me to again, san francisco bay oakland international airport, to quote, reflect the indisputable geographical fact that it is located on the shores of san francisco bay. san francisco says the name change has caused confusion and problems for travelers. i would say it's confusing. yes. yes. yeah. but you ended up at the right airport. i did. i did. unfortunately, we have now seen actual confusion occurring in real life. confusion that was entirely predictable and preventable. individuals who book flights to sfo intending to travel to oakland and vice versa. travelers who've been directed to the wrong airport by

rideshare services. that was sf city attorney david chu when we spoke with him back in september. we did reach out to his office again this morning for an interview, but did not hear back in time for my deadline this morning. the san francisco bay, oakland international airport did release a statement that reads, in part, quote, this is not and has never been about sfo or confusion, which is why sfo motion for preliminary injunction not only lacks adequate evidence of confusion, but also fails to establish that sfo is likely to prevail on its trademark infringement claims at trial. this is actually about bringing awareness to travelers about the choices they have when traveling to and from the nine county san francisco bay area. bay area residents and visitors alike will have better flying choices when there is widespread industry and consumer recognition that oak is located on the san francisco bay and serves the bay area region two. the port says they are confident they will prevail at this afternoon's hearing by the way, the airport codes are still the

they're not protecting our kids. >> reporter: nbc news reached out to musk about advisory role. no response yet. as we talk transition, nothing is final on any cabinet position until it's announced by mr. trump. we should note when it comes to military positions, multiple sources say the expectation who is the defense secretary would implement a purge across the board replacing military officials with generals that mr. trump believes are more aligned with his goals. back to you. the biden administration is preparing for the possibility of a rise in attempted crossings at the u.s./mexico border before president-elect trump returns to the white house. he made immigration a key part of his campaign. according to u.s. officials there's no evidence yet of a growing wave of migrants trying to enter the country. julia ainsley has exclusive reporting for us. julia, there's been a steady decline of migrants stopped at the southern border since president biden took executive

action over the summer. in fact, illegal crossing attempts at the southern and northern borders are at their lowest level of the entire biden administration. yet, there's still this new concern that it could start rising again. what are you learning? >> reporter: that's right. we understand that there was a meeting held at dhs on monday about the possibility of a trump win. now that they're living in that reality, they're looking at what capacity looks like. as you point out, they've been at a very low number of illegal border crossings for a very long time. there's a fear migrants may not want to wait for those appointments they set up through a legal route through an app and may want to come and migrants who left their home countries may decide now is the time to come because they want to get in before trump enacts some of the policies he's talked about on the campaign trail. we were able to look at how that's panning out within migrant chat groups. we looked at a few apps where

smugglers are advertising services telling immigrants now is the time to come. we saw in one case someone said that now is the time to come. don't come after the 21st of january. there will be extreme border security. they're talking about when trump is inaugurated on january 20th. another person saying they're worried about her sister because she's still in mexico and they can't sleep because of it. dozens of messages like this that we're seeing. the biden administration pays attention to that too. they're gearing up in the event of a possible surge. >> julia, president-elect trump has been vocal about immigration saying on day one he'll launch a massive deportation effort targeting undocumented migrants. according to a nonpartisan think tank more than 11 million undocumented migrants are estimated to be in the country. how could a deportation plan play out and work? >> reporter: well, when i talked to the current director of i.c.e. about how that would work, he said, it's logistically impossible to deport 11 million people over the course of a four-year administration.

when i talk to people in the trump orbit, they want to focus on 1.5 to 2 million, people with criminal convictions, anyone on a terror watch list or a final order of deportation. they're not leaving out families. that has a lot of people here very concerned. >> julia ainsley, thank you. the justice department is bracing for big changes with the return of president-elect trump to the white house. justice department officials have begun evaluating how to wind down the two federal criminal cases against the former president before he takes office in january. nbc news justice correspondent ken dilanian joins me now from washington. good to see you. why is the justice department looking to wind down these cases? what does that mean for special counsel jack smith for instance? >> reporter: jack smith is in talks with senior doj leaders about how to do this. there's no chance of these cases

election workers. what happened today? >> reporter: he was chewed out by the judge, he and his lawyers. these women have a $148 million judgment against rudy giuliani and they have an order for him to turn over most of his assets, including his multi-million dollar central park apartment. they told giuliani is playing games. he's opening up new bank accounts and not giving up certain things, including a watch handed down by his grandfather. the judge said this won't work. he ordered giuliani to give this stuff up within a week or be held in contempt of court. for the second time melania trump will be the nation's first lady. she writes the role is undefined, unpaid and subject to scrutiny. >> mrs. trump posted on x saying the majority of americans have entrusted us with this important responsibility. as for what she'll choose to do

feel elated about the outcome. >> a lot of people feel oversaturated right now. my parents live in pennsylvania. it's nonstop commercials for months. what are some healthy strategies to just kind of get away from the stress if we can? >> you have to preference your mental health right now. that means stepping away from the continual inundation with information and step back. it's okay to do things to feel better. maybe some aerobic exercise, making sure you're sleeping well at night. using distraction, whatever that might be. maybe it's comedy, a rom-com, whatever is your guilty pleasure. give yourself a little more of it now. talk to people around who are like minded and can be supportive to you. that's important. >> to your point of being like minded, the reality is people are really excited about the outcome. some people are disappointed. some are apathetic.

do you have recommendations on how to navigate different views whether at work or the dinner table with family? >> absolutely. we have to get better at conflict resolution in this nation in general. we have to remember that the relationships are the priority for you. they matter more. if you are having that in the front of your mind and thinking how can i be empathetic and listen to them without being critical and angry and having blowback and asking them to listen to me. you don't have to convince each other, just listen. what matters most is i like you, you like me and don't have to agree on everything. if it gets tough, you might say let's not talk about it. let's agree to disagree. at the end we don't want the dissolution of the relationship.
