i'm frances rivera. president-elect donald trump is poised to make history with one of his first cabinet picks for his new term. mr. trump says he has chosen susie wiles to be his next white house chief of staff. it would make her the first woman to serve in that position. wiles is a long-time florida political operative who helped run the trump campaign. nbc's brie jackson joins me now from d.c. hi, brie, good morning. what more do we know about the next trump cabinet? >> good morning, gfrances. they tell us that senator marco rubio is in the running for secretary of state as well as former national security advisor robert o'brien and former ambassador to germany, rick grenell. over at the pentagon, mr. trump may choose congressman mike waltz or mike pompeo to lead the defense department. former trump officials mark

paoletta or matthew whitaker could take over as attorney general. a top trump fundraiser said a successor for jerome powell would be named very early in this administration. powell's term ends in 2026, and he told reporters he will not be stepping down. >> some of the president-elect's advisors have suggested that you should resign. if he asked you to leave, would you go? >> no. in the near term, the election will have no effects on our policy decisions. >> reporter: nbc news had a phone interview with president-elect trump. kristen welker asked him about the cost of his plan for mass deportations. he told her, we have no choice in that there is no price tag. mr. trump said he sees his decisive victory as a mandate to, quote, bring common sense back to the country. frances? >> brie jackson for us, thank

you, brie. president biden addressed the nation from the rose garden about the peaceful transfer of power. >> setbacks are unavoidable, but giving up is unforgivable. we all get knocked down. but the measure of our character as my dad would say, is how quickly we get back up. remember, a defeat does not mean we are defeated. yesterday i spoke with president-elect trump to congratulate him on his victory. and i assured him that i'd direct my entire administration to work with his team to ensure a peaceful and orderly transition. >> white house officials say president biden will attempt trump's inauguration and that the two are expected to meet in the oval office in the near future. ballots are still being counted in this election. and overnight, nbc news was able to make a new call, projecting that donald trump has won the state of nevada, and its six

electoral votes. that's something he was unable to do in 2020 or 2016. we're still waiting to see which party will have control over the house. at this hour, republicans have a net gain of one seat, with 24 uncalled races. nbc news has projected republicans will have a majority in the senate. the gop has picked up at least three additional seats. nbc news has not yet projected a winner in pennsylvania's senate race. incumbent bob casey is closing in on his challenger. if the final result is within half a point, it could trigger a recount. the biden administration is bracing for a renewed surge at the southern border as migrants may hurry to enter the county before an expected trump crackdown on illegal immigration. nbc's julie ainsley has this report. >> reporter: the biden administration quietly making preparations in case of a surge of border crossings. one they're predicting might come as more immigrants may scramble to get into the united

states before president-elect trump takes office. nbc news learning homeland security secretary alejandro mayorkas met with the leader of i.c.e. and border protection to make sure they are ready, though officials say they have not yet seen an uptick. >> we're going to have to seal up those borders and let people come into our country. we want people to come back in. but we have to, we have to let them come back in, but they have to come in legally. >> reporter: years of trump's tough rhetoric on border security and harsh policies like family separation and remain in mexico have migrants on their way to the u.s. thinking their window to enter may soon be closing. like cbp 1, trump is cracking down on those entering illegally. >> i will seek funding for 10,000 new border agents and a

$10,000 retention and signing bonus. we're doing it. >> reporter: there's also uncertainty for migrants living in the country as trump has vowed to target millions of undocumented immigrants for deportation. greg chin of the american immigration lawyers association says his attorneys are already getting calls from worried clients. >> he's going to cause fear and anxiety throughout the immigrant community, including people who are both undocumented and people who do have legal options or legal status already. >> our thanks to julia for that report. authorities say a potential school shooting was averted in kenosha, wisconsin. the 13-year-old suspect tried to enter several doors around an elementary school, but they were all locked. he then went through the front door when police say the school staff intervened. police shared an updated video showing the boy practicing rifle techniques and say he did numerous google searches about school shootings.

he also recently made disturbing comments to other students. officials are urging parents to speak up immediately if they see warning signs. back here in new york. an urgent manhunt is under way. erin mclaughlin has the details. >> reporter: new york city police men are searching the suspect who opened fire on an upscale new york city street. a 47-year-old man was shot in the leg and shoulder. commuters crouched in fear as the suspect escaped through the subway tunnels. our station in new york shows this alleged shooter before the attack. a barista was at this coffee shop across the street when she heard shots fired >> a people sitting out here saw the altercation happening. and everybody got up and sort of, like, funneled into the store. >> reporter: everyone scrambled for shelter.

>> a few people actually ran into our bathroom. it's a small space. >> reporter: it all began with an argument inside a nearby computer store. the suspect followed the victim as they ran outside onto the street. according to employees, the victim owned the store and the station reports is expected to survive. crime is down for the tenth straight month, but with a gunman on the loose -- >> very unsettling. >> reporter: that's small comfort to residents who say they're not used to this kind of violence. breaking overnight. israel is sending at least two rescue planes to amsterdam to rescue citizens after several were injured in violent clashes after a soccer match in the dutch capital. pro palestinians clashed with supporters of an israeli team. the israeli foreign ministry says ten are injured and advised

israelis in amsterdam to stay in hotel rooms to be safe. prime minister benjamin netanyahu and the dutch prime minister spoke overnight. the dutch prime minister called the violence an unacceptable anti-semitic attack and vowed perpetrators would be prosecuted. so far, dozens have been arrested. three people in argentina have been arrested over the death of liam payne police there say. the former one direction singer died october 16th after falling from a hotel balcony in buenos aires. staff had called police about a guest who may have overindulged in drugs and alcohol. argentina's public prosecutor says someone who was with payne daily during his stay is charged with abandonment. two others, including a hotel employee, were charged with supplying payne with drugs. the toxicology report found traces of alcohol, cocaine and a prescription anti-depressant in his system. the mountain fire continues

to wreak havoc and has scorched 20,000 acres and forced 14,000 evacuations. it's still only 5% contained. it has destroyed 132 structures and threatened 88 others. santa ana wind gusts spread embers, starting new fires. and dry conditions are fueling fires in new jersey. burlington and camden counties have seen 100 structures threatened. it is 50% contained. and in ocean county, crews continue to battle the shotgun fire that has torched 350 acres and still threatens six buildings. dry conditions helping fuel those fires. let's turn to nbc meteorologist angie lassman, who is tracking the fire danger. good morning, angie. >> unfortunately, those conditions aren't going to let up a whole hlot across the northeast. boston, new york, philadelphia

and down towards washington, d.c., included in that. we've got strong winds up to 30 miles per hour and drought conditions persist. similar story out west. not going to be quite as aggressive as it has been over the past couple days. but we've still got red flag warnings into santa barbara county. any additional fires that start up or embers that are int are i wind will spread fwairly quickl. 49 states are reporting some kind of drought. across parts of the northeast, 57% of it in the moderate dro drought range. we need rain, unfortunately, there's not a lot in the forecast. at least in the immediate future for a couple locations. we do have rain stretched across e middleth o in the forecast fo

wall street aiming to extend the post-election rally. the nasdaq jumped 285 points to a record high after the fed cut interest rates for the second time since september. but the inflation fight isn't over yet. cnbc's charlotte reed is here with the latest. good morning, charlotte. >> good morning, frances. indeed, as expected, the federal reserve cutting the interest rates yesterday for the second time this year, they cut it by 25 basis points to a range between 4.5 and 4.75%. the fed last cut interest rates in september by 50 basis points. that's because we see the overall inflation cooling off, getting closer to the fed's target of 2%.

but some challenges remain on inflation. prices have been falling for most goods throughout the year. inflation saw a wide range of services remain stubbornly high, up 3.7% in september. and restaurants is one of the most hit sectors sectors in tha and food services prices rising 3.6%. higher wages is one of the reasons why prices remain high for restaurants. some of them had to put menu prices up for turning away some customers as a result. and housing market is another area where prices remain high, driving inflation up, rising 5.1%, compared to last year's picture. the path ahead is a little bit uncertain. and the election of donald trump adding to uncertainty with some of his key policies like imposing tariffs on imports, making a potential fight against
