they say the 13-year-old suspect tried to enter several doors around a local elementary school, but they were all locked. he then went through the front door when school staff intervened. >> 9:02:00 a.m., report of a suspicious person wearing a black backpack and holding a large duffle back. suspect was intercepted by school staff members, and he fled on foot. >> police shared an updated video, showing the boy practicing rifle techniques. they say he did numerous google searches about school shootings and had also recently made disturbing comments to other students. authorities urge parents to talk to their children and for everyone to speak up immediately if they see warning signs. let's turn now to the latest election results as ballots are still being counted. first, anupdate on the balance of power in the house. at this hour, republicans have a net gain of one seat. there are still 24 races

uncalled and 218 seats are needed for control of that chamber. now to the senate where nbc news has projected republicans will have the majority. the gop has picked up at least three additional seats. nbc news has not yet projected a winner in pennsylvania's senate race. bob casey is currently half a point behind his challenger. that margin could trigger a recount. meanwhile, president-elect donald trump says he has chosen his new white house chief of staff, susie wiles. she helped run the trump campaign. she will be the first woman to serve as chief of staff. hallie jackson has more. >> reporter: transition talk ramping up with president-elect trump's first meeting with his team on who will help execute his agenda, including secretary of state. under consideration, according to multiple sources? former national security advisor robert o'brien and florida

intelligence people. but i will tell you that president putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today. he just said it's not russia. i will say this. i don't see any reason why it would be. >> reporter: the kremlin saying it's not planning to contact president biden. the two have not spoken for a long time. but the kremlin did not rule out a putin-trump summit before january or even a russian delegation invited to the inauguration. america's adversaries and allies waiting to see what move president-elect trump makes over ukraine. one report said the transition team already has proposals for ukraine. two european diplomats telling nbc news those plans have not yet been shared. >> our thanks to keir for that report. three people in argentina have been arrested over the death of liam payne, police there say. the former one direction singer died october 16th. he fell from a hoe fell balcony in buenos aires after staff

called police about a guest who may have overindulged in drugs and alcohol. argentina's public prosecutor says someone who was with payne daily during his stay is charged with abandonment. two other people, including a hotel employee were charged with supplying drugs to payne. the toxicology report found traces of alcohol, cocaine and an anti-depressant in payne's system. a manhunt is under way in new york city after a gunman opened fire on manhattan's upper west side. the shots sent people running for cover, hiding under benches on the subway. the suspect escaped through subway tunnels. law enforcement say it began with an argument inside a nearby computer store. the 47-year-old victim was shot in the shoulder and leg but is expected to survive. turning to california where the mountain fire continues to wreak havoc. it has now score scorche scorch than 20,000 acres.

the fire has damaged 88 homes. santa ana wind gusts spread the embers up to three miles away, starting new fires. and on the east coast, dry conditions are fueling fires in new jersey. the bethany fire is 50% contained. and in ocean county, crews continue to battle the shotgun fire that has torched 350 acres and threatens six buildings. a winter chill is working et cetera way through the country. angie lassman has your friday forecast. >> we'll talk more about the fire conditions that you can see on each coast here. we've got a system here working through the middle of the country. rain and snow on tap for folks there. we've got flood alerts stretching from texas into parts of oklahoma and winter alerts up for that area as well. here's what's going to happen over the next 24 to 48 hours.

>> reporter: people were. >> realready looking for the dog. >> knowing that the waterway was here i looked in and the dog was swimming. >> reporter: the dog was losing strength. >> go back over there. go! >> the other officer helped me, we thought at the time, call it over, and started coming towards me, we were able to grab it and pull it out of the water. i was very scared it was going to go under and drown. >> reporter: they were able to find the dog's owner. the dog was elderly and both blind and deaf. sergeant mahoney says everyone was thankful the sweet girl was okay. because, if they didn't know to look for her, she might not have been found. >> the dog is blind. they're not going to know where to go. so it just, it feels good that we were able to get it while it was here and not if it floated out there, because it was very desolate on clearwater beach, because of the hurricanes.
