trump making an historic appointment as he starts assembling a white house staff. we're live in washington with the big names being considered for his new cabinet. the city of san jose has your back as a new administration takes shape. state and bay area lawmakers are reassuring californians the new preventative measures taken before trump takes office. we're monitoring breaking news in the santa cruz mountains. tracking the race to contain a brush fire inching close to homes
6:01 am
overnight. this is today in the bay. this is also friday morning, 6:00 right now. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia, and i'm marcus washington. we want to continue to follow that breaking news for you this morning. that small brush fire. this is burning near highway 17 near the summit in los gatos. so the fire so far has only burned about one acre, but may be threatening nearby homes on old summit road. this is south of redwood estates. for a time it closed both directions of highway 17, but all lanes are now open again. it's still too soon to know how this fire started, but of course we will continue to monitor that. meteorologist kari hall of course, monitoring the conditions outside wind. how is that a factor this morning? kari? well, we are not seeing much of a wind this morning. humidity is higher. so maybe that's the reason why we haven't seen it spread as quickly as we would have seen it. maybe yesterday or the day before. so that's the good thing this
6:02 am
morning. also starting out cooler. it's in the low 40s in walnut creek. it's 49 in san francisco and 46 in palo alto. checking out our highs for this afternoon. it's going to be nice with some low 70s once again, very much the same temperatures we've seen throughout the weekend. we're also going to see that repeat tomorrow, but maybe slightly cooler in spots as we get more clouds coming in. we'll talk about rain ahead, but mike, you're looking at that friday commute is slower to build. yeah. so this looks almost the same as the last time we took a look about 5 or 7 minutes ago. we're looking at westbound 80. the bay bridge toll plaza slowing as you reach the edge of the screen, and the toll plaza itself. and we're looking at a slower build up the incline mile, the commute into san francisco. right now, richmond shows a mild build as well. for west 80, we still have the most slowing showing up on highway 37, but highway four, look at that. it's a little lighter than it was about ten minutes ago, so a smooth, easy drive around most of the bay. so we'll look at the south bay. we're sticking around with some slowing for north 101 a little longer toward oakland road. but as we talked about
6:03 am
highway 17, that fire is still on summit old summit road. but 17 is clear back to you. all right. thanks, mike. well, president joe biden is promising his staff will assist president elect donald trump's team transitioning, emphasizing a successful free and fair electoral process. now, this comes as trump is now putting together his presidential cabinet. today in the bay's brie jackson is live for us in washington this morning with those details. and bree, talk to us about what the president did speak about during his speech. good morning mark. so during his rose garden speech yesterday, president biden congratulated president elect trump and laid out his plans for his remaining time in office. she gave her whole heart and effort. president biden, addressing the nation for the first time since president elect trump's decisive victory over vice president harris. we accept the choice the country made. i've said many times, you can't love your country only when you win. you
6:04 am
can't love your neighbor only when you agree. the president praising harris for her historic run. she ran an inspiring campaign, and everyone got to see something that i learned early on to respect so much. her character. president biden also pledging a peaceful transfer of power on january 20th. as former president trump prepares for his second administration. america has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate. in a phone interview with nbc news, president elect trump was asked about his plans for mass deportations and potential costs associated with it. his respons? we have no choice when people have killed and murdered and stated there is no price tag. democrats are preparing for a political fight. we're going to have to defend the constitution and the democracy against chaos in the streets. if they're really serious about trying to deport 12 million people and run
6:05 am
over the bill of rights. president elect trump will likely have some help trying to get his agenda through congress. republicans secured a senate majority, but control of the house remains up in the air, and president elect trump is set to make history with his new administration. mr. trump says siouxsie wiles will be his next white house chief of staff, making her the first woman in that role. back to you. all right. brie jackson in washington for us this morning. brie. thank you. ahead of the white house transition, california leaders are already looking at ways to protect state policies from what may be dramatic shifts by the new trump administration today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us. an, kris, that includes possible action on reproductive rights, climate change and even immigration. right. and immigration certainly is one of the issues with the most urgency for the community as that threat of mass deportation looms large this afternoon. santa clara county leaders will gather at the county building, they say,
6:06 am
to reaffirm their commitment to well-being, safety and inclusivity. now in san jose yesterday, people gathered for a healing circle to process the fear about that trump administration deportation plan. and it's a big worry because it's estimated that 1 in 25 families has a family member who is undocumented. now, earlier in the afternoon, san jose city leaders gathered outside the historic home of cesar chavez to assure undocumented immigrants that the city's police force will not be turned into an immigration force. our officers will not detain, question or arrest individuals solely for the purpose of determining whether they are undocumented. now, as you heard in bree jackson's report, the fear is not baseless. president elect donald trump standing by his campaign promise of mass deportations, regardless of price, in a call with nbc news. and that's why california's attorney general, rob bonta, is promising to use his full authority to defend immigrant communities. what could that
6:07 am
look like? we know that during the first trump term, california sued the administration. more than 120 times, often successfully. now, on the legislative side, governor gavin newsom called lawmakers back for a special session. they are going to gather on december 2nd to strengthen california law related to immigration, but also reproductive care and the climate. now, usually, the lawmakers show up early, they get sworn in, and then they head home for the holiday. but this time they are going to hit the ground running. now, another interesting note. the governor appears to be calling on leaders in other states to join in this effort. our colleagues at kcra report that some people got a text message inviting them to a zoom call to discuss standing together. newsom's campaign has not yet publicly spoken about that message. marcus. all right, chris, thank you. 607 for you right now. developing now in southern california, firefighters still making slight
6:08 am
headway battling a destructive wildfire in ventura county. this is called the mountain fire. it's destroyed more than 100 structures, mostly homes, and burned more than 20,000 acres. since wednesday, governor gavin newsom has already declared a state of emergency. it's now 5% contained, but conditions there are starting to improve. meteorologist kari hall certainly keeping an eye on those conditions there. we had that red flag warning earlier this week. what are firefighters up against this morning there? it looks so much better than it did just a couple of days ago. we don't have as much of the santa ana winds blowing offshore in the very low relative humidity. so they've actually dropped some of the coastline in socal from the red flag warning, but it is still in effect for some of the inland empire, as well as some of the hills and mountains where we are going to see still some breezy winds throughout the morning, but that will be expiring today at 11 a.m. we're going to see some of those gusty winds start to wind down for some of the coastal areas. look at ventura today. we are going to see those winds at
6:09 am
about 5 to 10mph. so much improved as we're starting out here in the bay area with some chilly temperatures. check out santa rosa now down to 35 degrees. and as we go through the day, it's going to gradually warm up a lot of sunshine and highs today in the low 70s. so we'll get a look ahead to the weekend coming up. mike has a look at where you can fill up for less before you hit the road. yeah, we're going around the bay picking out the counties. i picked out some cities, not necessarily the lowest in their county, but the lowest for the cities, like pleasant hill, the top here, the best there is. 379 at arco on pleasant hill road. the middle here, the north bay. we'll look at san rafael. that's 389 for the best. arco on second street in the bottom number here in the south bay will call out sunnyvale with 394 at national petroleum on old san francisco road. we also call out gasbuddy.com where you can get those reports, and you can also contribute to the information on the roadways. we're not contributing a lot of vehicles on the roadway today. this friday, looking very smooth. i mean, there are vehicles out
6:10 am
there, of course, but no major slowing. we do have highway 37 typical out of vallejo. that started right on schedule, but everything else is kind of held off for the build mile build of the richmond center, fell bridge and the bay bridge as well. we have no problems here. vasco road, look at that. under 20 minutes still out of contra costa county. back to you. thanks so much, mike. you've heard us talk about this story before. more people reporting their tickets are stolen right from their ticketmaster account. we'll head for you at 625. our consumer investigator, chris gilmore, is on the case. we have an interest rate cut. plus the fellow who said you've got mail has passed away. we'll take a look at that out to the futures this morning. and it looks like they're going to hold on to that big rally we saw on wednesday. plus we told you about this east bay therapy dog in the running to become america's top hero dog. well, now a four legged friend has been crowned the winner. we're going to show you where dale ranked. you're watching today in the bay.

at floor & decor. bounced from one doctor to the next. does it have to be like this? at kaiser permanente, we have a different kind of healthcare... so, how did you like doctor lum? ...where all of us work together for all that is you. we're in the upper 40s at 7:00, but lots of sunshine and a nice warm up heading towards noon and highs today in the low 70s. we'll get a look at the weekend
6:14 am
forecast and rain coming our way eventually. that's in just a few minutes. and we're looking at the build up over here out of richmond, the bridge to san rafael. the bridge moves smoothly. the backup, of course, coming off the east shore freeway just builds with that beautiful silhouette behind folks. as we're going across the bay, there's a build forming at the bay bridge finally visible this friday. we'll show that to you coming up. well, good morning and a very happy friday to you. the fed cut interest rates by a quarter point. we'll talk more about that in a moment. the rally on the dow that we saw on wednesday didn't continue thursday. but investors didn't take their money off the table either. this is lucid. you can see by the price of their stock they're really struggling. but in its report to analysts and reporters thursday, the electric car company reported better than numbers than we were expecting. well, i know you can do this phrase in your head, right? the fella who said you've got mail on america online has passed away. elwood edwards was 74 years old. he was working at
6:15 am
a cleveland tv station while his wife worked at a computer company. she told her boss, steve case, later the founder of aol. she knew a guy who could do voices for their new service. she wrote out the phrases, including files done and goodbye on a post-it note. federal open market committee, as i mentioned, cut interest rates by another quarter point. jay powell announcing that thursday. now, president elect, appointed powell during his first term. but trump doesn't like powell much now. powell was asked if he'd step aside as head of the fed. some of the president elect's advisors have suggested that you should resign. if he asked you to leave, would you g? no. can you follow up on it? do you think that legally you're not required to leave? no. now, in theory, a president can remove a fed chair for cause it's never been done and would certainly face a legal challenge. the federal reserve,
6:16 am
after all, created as an independent body and goes to great lengths to stay away from politics. in fact, interest rate meetings are usually tuesday and wednesday. but this month they did wednesday, thursday to try to get farther away from election day. now, to be sure, some presidents do try to pressure the fed to do what they want. new york times reports this morning. there's an effort among some republican lawmakers to rein in some of president elect trump's promised tax cut. top of that list no tax on tips. economists have pointed out the president elect's campaign tax cut promises would raise the deficit three times as fast as harris's plan. henry paulson, a leading candidate to be trump's secretary of the treasury, told the new york times. while it's important to keep the tax cuts in concept, they'd have to put guardrails around trump's promises. trump has promised no tax on tips, no tax on social security, no tax on overtime and ending the restrictions on deductions on state and local taxes. republican lawmakers
6:17 am
worry about the deficit they're resisting. lastly, tesla offering the cybertruck as a lease starting at 9.99 a month with 7500, down. if that sounds steep, a $1,000 a month. remember cybertruck costs around $100,000, a far cry from musk's original 39,000. you know, it's some people's cup of tea and others it's not. but the ultimate arbiter in in cool is, of course, jack. and so what does jack think? that's funny. my son jack loves them, but his sisters hate it. yeah, yeah. so every time we see one, which is often in the bay area, there's the debate. it looks like one of the trucks you have when you were a kid, you know, it really does, doesn't it? yes. yeah. all right. his idea of the future. yeah. yeah, i'm here for it. all right. thanks, scott. and you can take jack. let's go. jack. come on. all right, look, 2025 grammy nominees. well, they're about to be set this morning, so it's all shaping up to be all
6:18 am
about the ladies. of course, taylor swift, beyonce, charli xcx, sabrina carpenter, chapell roan. look, they are behind some of this year's biggest chart topping albums. kendrick lamar's drake diss track not like us, also a strong contender as well. those nominations begin at 8:00 this morning. the grammys are scheduled for february 2nd. also trending for you the presidential election not the only national contest making headlines this week. how about the american humane hero dog award this morning on the today show, they announced the winner. oh, here we go. bo is the top dog among five finalists that go above and beyond. he's a 17 month old bloodhound born in kentucky that now works for the gastonia police department in north carolina. he only joined the canine force last year, but he and his supreme sense of smell have already helped locate several people who went missing, including an elderly dementia patient and an 11 year old
6:19 am
autistic child. congrats to bo. he's got the nose for it. also, congrats to another nominee from here in the bay area. you remember dayo, a nine year old rhodesian ridgeback from dublin. he started out as a companion dog in oregon for a cheetah, but now he actually provides support to young patients at the george mark children's house in san leandro. look at those eyes. you can catch both dayo and bo, along with the other finalists on the today show this morning at 7 a.m, right after today in the bay. it's amazing the work those animals can do. congratulations to them. that's cool how they can sense, right? needed. yes. that's so true. and another great winner. born in kentucky. kari hall not on the national stage, but you know. hey, we're keeping you right here. that's right. your hours and it looks great outside. it's going to be a beautiful weekend to enjoy the fall colors that we're starting to see popping right now. so it will be cool to start in the mornings and then
6:20 am
feeling seasonable for the afternoons. but for the weekend we will see some more clouds coming in. even a chance of drizzle on sunday morning, but more widespread rain in the forecast early next week. we're starting out in the mid 30s in parts of the north bay. it is 35 now in santa rosa and in sonoma, and it's 38 in danville. those are some of the cooler temperatures on the map here. while we're seeing mostly some 40s as you're heading out and we're headed back to the upper 60s and low 70s, san francisco will be 69 today, 73 in novato and 73 as well in concord, dublin, san jose and in los gatos. tomorrow, just a touch cooler as we start to see more clouds coming in. overall, still pretty nice. and then on sunday we will have clouds for the morning, but then it should clear out for the afternoon. so here's a look ahead to the weekend. a quick moving system that really kind of falls apart before it gets here may still bring in some spotty sprinkles to parts of the coastal north bay as well as peninsula, but
6:21 am
then going into the rest of the weekend, it looks nice. and on monday a lot of people off of work and school. we'll have to watch out for some widespread rain starting out late morning in the north bay, continuing to move across the bay area during the afternoon and clearing out on monday night. so during that time frame, we could see about a half inch of rain for parts of the north bay. from santa rosa on northward, and then for much of the rest of the bay area, about a quarter inch of rainfall will be possible and more rain ahead for next week, as well as sierra snow. a lot of these storm systems will continue to fall apart before they make it here, but at least we will see some wet weather across the region and we'll also be a little bit cooler for monday when that rain comes in. our overnight lows will continue to dip down into the low 40s with highs near 70. and for san francisco, it will be a partly to mostly cloudy weekend, mainly tomorrow and sunday and veteran's day. we will have some more widespread rain. mike,
6:22 am
you're getting a look at that. backup at the bay bridge. took till about 615 for the backup to form. steady to about mid parking lot. and now finally building up as folks arrive at the bay bridge toll plaza. friday's have a later build and a lighter overall commute for the morning. we're looking at the east shore freeway, gentle slowing here and again, the build out of richmond. westbound 37 is continuing to be an issue. i have no reports of any work going on, no lanes blocked. it's just slow from highway 37, merritt island, all the way over toward 121 this morning. that may be a little unusual slowing in toward novato. the build right on time here for southbound 880. no problems across the san mateo or dumbarton bridges tri-valley. a couple of incidents, but 680 moves smoothly into the south bay and out of south county. north 101 easy drive. back to you. thanks, mike. 622 right now. coming up next on today in the bay nbc bay area responds a bad punch line for a woman who bought tickets to a comedy show. a thief stole the tickets from

right now at 630. san francisco mayor london breed concedes in the battle to keep her job. the major shift in bay area leadership now underway. meanwhile, history made with president elect donald trump's first appointment to the white house. plus, the start of ski season in tahoe, with the first resort opening today. but the sierra looking a little dry. we're breaking down everything you need to know before you hit the slopes this upcoming winter. this is today in the bay. and this is friday morning. want to say good morning to you? thanks for starting your day with us. i'm marcus washington, and i'm laura garcia. let's get a look at that friday forecast, shall we? meteorologist kari hall looking good for today. yes. it's going to be a great day.
6:31 am
starting out chilly, but it will be warming up as we go into the afternoon. and we do have a beautiful sunrise to start in the north bay. we're taking a live look outside in san rafael. you can see the clear sky now and the temperature down to 37 degrees. it is a very chilly start, but it will be warming up nicely late morning into the afternoon with highs there headed for the low 70s. we'll see low 70s everywhere across much of the bay area today. a lighter wind and into the day tomorrow. more clouds arriving and it will be just a touch cooler in some spots, but still great for those outdoor activities. so we'll take a look at some events going on as you make weekend plans and the forecast coming up in a few minutes. all right. thanks so much, kari. well, in just a few hours, we will hear from the new mayor elect of san francisco, daniel lurie. today in the bay's ginger conejero saab joins us live in san francisco this morning. so ginger lurie is a political outsider, but there's still a lot that he is hoping to accomplish here. that's right. laura and he recognizes that it
6:32 am
won't happen overnight. you know, we were there when daniel lurie first announced that he was running for mayor. that was over a year ago. and this morning he is stepping into his new role as mayor elect of the city. mayor london breed is stepping out graciously, being mayor of the city has been the absolute honor of my life. mayor breed conceded in the race for mayor yesterday after serving six years in office, making her mark as the city's first black woman mayor. she said she called lurie to congratulate him. the latest numbers were released yesterday afternoon. lurie staying consistent with 56% of the vote. the incumbent mayor with almost 44% of the vote. now, the department of elections says there are still over 140,000 ballots to count. but for breed, this race is over. and despite the disappointing results for her, she is ready to move forward. ultimately, you know, i love and i care about
6:33 am
this city, and i care about the work that i've done, and i want to see a lot of the work that we put together continue to grow. now, lurie said in a statement he is grateful to his family, campaign team and the san franciscans, who, quote, voted for accountability, service and change. he went on to promise to fight for a safer and more affordable for city all. now, political strategists say voters were drawn to a fresh start that lurie represented in the campaign. and although some voters were drawn to the incumbent mayor's campaign, voters were still frustrated with the issues in the city and wanted to leave political baggage behind. lurie campaigned on clean and safe streets. he also campaigned on tackling the city's drug and behavioral health crisis, and says he wants to shake up corrupt and ineffective bureaucracy in the city. mayor elect lurie will speak for the first time in that new role this morning. we will be there and bring you the
6:34 am
latest on our midday newscast. we're live in san francisco. ginger conejero saab. today in the bay. all right. we'll see if he brings a change to san francisco that a lot of people want to see. thanks, ginger. well, you may have thought that you were done with the election, but the count rolls on. nbc news now calling nevada for donald trump. scott mcgrew joins us now. may be several days until we actually know that. final count there, though. but arizona still not finishing there. arizona. yeah. still undecided. right in the undecided column. now we know trump won the required 270 electoral votes. we've known that since early wednesday morning. so while arizona voters aren't irrelevant, they're not going to change the outcome. one interesting thing though, this morning with the improved vote count, is that it's looking as if roughly the same number of people who voted in 2020 voted again in 2024. there had been talk mostly on social media, mostly by democrats wondering out loud why it appeared far fewer voters voted this time around. like millions fewer. well, turns out it wasn't true.
6:35 am
you just had to wait for the updated count. president elect trump has made his first appointment. she's siouxsie wiles. she will be the chief of staff, the first woman to ever serve as chief of staff in the white house. wiles has worked for years with what we would describe as traditional republicans mitt romney, for instance. a bit of trivia. she's pat summerall's daughter. summerall, a longtime football announcer and before that, nfl star. big question ahead what role, if any, will trump give robert kennedy jr. rfk dropped his own campaign to support trump and has some ideas about health that run counter to science. his support? he supports unpasteurized milk. he has said that trump will encourage water systems to remove fluoride from the water, though he did indicate this week americans would still be able to get vaccines even if he were in charge. i won't take away anyone's vaccines, he said in an
6:36 am
interview with nbc news. we talked in business about how trump's proposed no tax on tips may not actually make it past his own republican party, now that the republican party is ready to go, republican governor of texas meantime reporting that planned roundup of millions of undocumented immigrants may not happen as quickly as promised, either. but no, this this task is a mountain to climb because under the biden administration, they decimated ice. ice is the primary federal agency that's in charge of this. it's going to take trump time to build up the ice enforcements like what last existed when he was last president, as well as the border patrol agents. and there's nothing that's going to happen overnight. the philippines ambassador to the united states warning filipinos here illegally they should leave, not wait to be rounded up. some call that self-deportation. meantime, a judge in texas has ruled president biden overstepped with a plan to help undocumented spouses of american citizens
6:37 am
stay in america. normally, these people would get american citizenship, but they have to go back to their home country first. biden wanted people to stay here if they had been living here more than a decade while they waited for approval. the judge says the president doesn't have the power to do that. california attorney general rob bonta held a press conference yesterday, saying that california was ready to challenge the soon to be president trump if he tries to overstep. our kris sanchez has had full coverage of that. but do note this is just kind of what state attorneys general do. states are constantly suing the federal government in court. california did so back when trump was president. the first time. texas takes biden to court all the time. a variety of states have sued the biden administration as well. laura, to stop his student loan relief. a lot to cover there. thank you scott. and a reminder for you you can always get your local election results anytime on our nbc bay area app. just scan the

restaurants around the city. it's restaurant week and we'll see highs today in the upper 60s there. mostly sunny, 65 tomorrow with a mix of sun and clouds and just a touch cooler on sunday. if you want to see some waves, head to santa cruz. it's going to be 69 degrees today, partly to mostly cloudy tomorrow and then low 60s for sunday with breezy winds. if your weekend plans take you to socal, we are going to see temperatures in the mid 70s there. pretty much the same weather that we're seeing for the inland areas across the bay, and we'll talk more about rain ahead in our forecast. but mike, you're looking at some delays now and through the weekend. yeah. right now it's the bay bridge finally filled in. all lanes you see visible movement. but there's the backup. and coming into the area slowing down the east shore freeway, a bigger build out of richmond. it's friday though. you notice all the connecting freeways are moving basically at speed. that's great. as we're looking out toward the future this weekend and starting tonight. in fact, watch in san francisco coming off the bay bridge, westbound 80 to southbound 101. that will be connector work starting tonight
6:40 am
all the way in through monday morning. and we're looking at 101 as well. the connector on the south 101. there's going to be detours posted. so watch for that. leaving san francisco via venice as well. another closure for the weekend will be up near highway 12 for the rio vista bridge. most of our viewers don't use this. it's not heavily used over the weekend, but those who do use it have a long detour because it closes tonight. you'll have to get all the way around if that is your route. a smooth drive for the rest of the south bay. we'll show you the backup. the bay bridge coming u. back to you. thanks, mike. 639 right now, disturbing a mysterious text messages raising alarms after the election. still ahead, the fbi investigation now underway after several young black americans report receiving racist messages and a lot of questions surrounding one name christian mccaffrey. will he play an injury update before the 49ers head to florida for their matchup against the buccaneers? and just like that. ski season has arrived, with the first

area. looks like all systems go for one of the 49ers star players to return to the field. head coach kyle shanahan says he expects christian mccaffrey to play sunday in tampa. cmc has been practicing this week without set backs after being sidelined all season due to achilles tendinitis. well, now to a live look this morning over at lake tahoe from one of the cameras at mount rose ski resort and believe it or not, starting today. ski season is back in session. mount rose today becomes the first tahoe ski resort to open other tahoe resorts are starting to get ready, and we can only hope this season is as successful as the one that ended last spring, or even summer in some cases. joining us now from tahoe is kevin cooper. he's director of stoke and kevin. good morning to you. what kind of conditions are you sensing on the first day out there as you're stoke are starting out with a bang. oh yeah. the stoke level starting to rise right now. mike pearson the mount rose crew has done a

great job of getting their resort open. they do it every year. i mean they really put the energy and effort in to be the first in town. and if you're out on the lake and i was down to camp richardson yesterday looking across from the south up to the north shore, and you could just see that white strip. so people are fired up and ready to go and slide on mother natures right now it's man made. but that's okay, right? it's just the start of the season. but they get us kicked off. we've got cold temperatures. we've had a little bit of snow. we're looking at some, you know, snow in the forecast. as kari was talking about veterans day and then 18 to the 23rd, i think that's our big kickoff. and think about, you know, some of the bay area ski lovers, of course, wanting to come up there and have some fun. what should they be getting excited about? i would imagine there's a lot more to do out there. yeah. great question, marcus. and i'll tell you what. get your gear ready to go. get your skis sharpened, have your bindings checked out, get your snowboards all cleaned up, get ready to go get that last stop. but here's the big important thing. remember, you're going to be driving back up to the sierra. if you haven't
6:48 am
been driving up here all year. i-80 88, highway 50 road kit chains, tensioners, all that stuff that you need to have in your car to come on up and enjoy it. that's the first thing that i start getting ready besides my gear. and then make sure that you have your passes. i like to call them powell hunting tags. make sure you got your passes, your icon, your epic, your pass. just be ready to go because as soon as mother nature starts to bless the sierra, the mountain operations teams and the snow makers are going to be getting after. it looks like opening days are anywhere between the 23rd planned opening days, 23rd to the 29th. that's throughout the sierra. that's the north shore, south shore. that's even west of dodge ridge. bear valley, down towards fresno, china peak, and even our brethren down in southern california, mountain high, they're preparing to get ready to go as well, right around the 23rd to the 29th. all right. right around the corner. we're hoping for that snow. but, you know, there's so much to do when you head up to tahoe as well. i want to talk to you a little bit because you're a big part of the restoring the lakes depths foundation. tell us about some of the recent progress being

made there to clean up that beautiful lake. hi. we're doing a lot of work out there. we're getting into the water each and every day. we've got lake tahoe diving in, environmental, working with us as captain kris kira. he's out there diving almost every day, picking up large trash and debris out of the lake. and then we have our fa, you know, our four remote operated vehicles, baby blue, deep emerald, all going out to pick up the microplastics. so we're out there, you know, pretty much every day in the last 60 days, 13 tons of debris. did we pull out a lot of it. are those big, heavy objects. but we're pulling a lot out. and then coming up here. but we're going to see that weather coming in. we're doing what's called a deep dive. we're going to take one of our rovs, baby blue, down to the bottom, 504m to the bottom of the lake, and we're going to live stream it. so you guys stay tuned. that is going to be unbelievable. okay, i can't wait for that because you know what? jacques cousteau said there are things that no one should see. all right. it's always good to see you. i hope to see you up on the slopes
6:50 am
really soon. you guys take care. we'll see you out on the mountain. you too. good luck. every time we talk to him. i mean, i'm not a great. well, i can't really ski at all, but i always want to go out to talk to him. are you excited? he does a little more energy in the morning. i think it's that cold air wakes you up. yeah, certainly. it's in the teens and 20s here this morning. so during that live show, i was looking like. does he have on any gloves? no, he's got that beard. kiefer with the mom in you too? yeah. where is your glove and your hat? you know, it's cold out there. and we're starting out with a live look at palisades tahoe. not too far from there. and we are seeing a little bit of a dusting of snow on the upper mountains, and we're going to see a dry weekend there. here at home, it's nice and sunny as we're stepping out the door, and it will be a mild day, a little bit more in the way of cloud cover, slightly cooler temperatures for the weekend with rain coming in on monday and then again late next week. but we're also watching this headline hurricane raphael in the gulf of mexico. now a
6:51 am
category two hurricane. and it is very slowly moving. and there's nothing to really steer this storm. so it's just very slowly moving. and the models are actually showing it, just doing a loop de loop out there in the gulf, and may eventually start to head a little bit farther south towards mexico in the next few days. so we'll keep an eye on that here. we're seeing the high temperatures headed for the low to mid 70s for today. it will be 73, in novato, san francisco 69 degrees and the high in palo alto 71 degrees. and we'll just bring it down a few degrees tomorrow with more clouds, but still very comfortable during the middle of the day and a repeat on sunday with a mix of sun and clouds. so what's happening is that we will see a slight chance of rain coming in on sunday, and it's mainly early in the morning near the coast and in parts of the north bay. but other than that, it's going to be clearing out, staying dry throughout the day. we'll see a better chance of rain on monday, mainly late morning into the afternoon for the north bay and then sweeping
6:52 am
across the rest of the bay area, clearing out late on monday night. so during that time we could possibly see about a quarter to half inch of rainfall. the higher rainfall totals will be for the north bay, but still a quarter inch of rain in redwood city and fremont could be a decent amount of rainfall to start out the week. but yes, it does come on veterans day when a lot of people are making plans to get outside and then there will be another chance of rain and sierra snow toward the end of next week, and temperatures just slightly cooler compared to what we've seen this week. highs today still headed for the mid 70s inland and low 70s for the weekend, while san francisco will be a little bit cooler as more clouds come in for the weekend. mike, you are seeing things bogging down in oakland. yeah, they were jamming up, coming up toward 98 and the coliseum disabled vehicle hidden by this overpass looks like it's cleared things are moving more smoothly now. speeds are recovering out of san leandro in the northbound commute direction. the southbound commute off of 238 still building in toward hayward,
6:53 am
passing san mateo bridge. no major issues. a lighter build for the east bay, of course, because it's friday, but highway 37 continues with that slower drive all the way from merritt island over toward 121. no incidents reported. we're looking at a typical westbound flow of traffic. there. southbound 880 slows, of course, because of the volume, but 680 there is a crash near mission and the cutover. so do watch that area for things to bog down just through the washington district, north through the south bay. just kicking in. back to you. thank you so much, mike. it is 652 and happening now. you could soon be paying more at the pump in california. the california air resources board is set to vote on an update to the state's low carbon fuel standard. the proposal would lower carbon emissions faster to reach governor newsom's goals of cutting emissions in half by 2030. if it goes through, it would also increase costs for petroleum refineries, which means paying more for gas. the hike could be up to $0.20 more per gallon. and we're back in just minutes with a look at our top stories this morning,
