let freedom sing. why some say we need another song for the land of the free and home for the brave. i can't wait for you to hear that. we begin in the netherlands where authorities are saying there was an attack on israeli soccer fans. cell phone video showing a large group of men throwing punches at a soccer match. five people were injured during all of this. more than 60 people were arrested. leading us off, nbc news international correspondent meagan fitzgerald in amsterdam. do we know anything about what started this altercation? >> reporter: that's exactly what investigators are trying to get to the bottom of. we know from hearing from the police cheer of amsterdam earlier today, it was a city on edge. they saw the tensions starting

to rise. israeli fans setting a palestinian flag on fire was an incident. another one an attack on a taxi cab. the pinnacle is after that match was over last night, that's when the chaos ensued. as the mayor put it all hell broke loose. we spoke with many witnesses, israeli fans who attended the game and came back here to the center of the city and really painting a horrifying picture of what they called some very terrifying moments. when they left the stadium, they said they felt safe. there was a big police presence there. they hopped on a train that took them from the stadium to the center of town and that's when they say they were attacked because they were jewish. people were running through alleys.

speaking through israeli citizens, they said they felt safe and had a good time and now they don't. >> while this happened in amsterdam, it sounds like the israeli government is now getting involved, right? >> reporter: you're absolutely right. the israeli government sent an additional commercial flight to amsterdam for the purposes of getting folks here back to israel. we know there were some medics on board to help with anyone who had any medical issues. this was a flight free of charge for people, whether or not they booked on this aircraft or not. so, yeah. everybody was not able to get on. we talked to a guy who says he's still trying to make arrangements to get home as quickly as he can. >> meagan fitzgerald in amsterdam, thanks. we are following breaking news. the justice department has announced charges over an alleged iranian murder for hire plot targeting president-elect donald trump before the

election. the department charged three individuals, two are american citizens. authorities say an american journalist was also targeted. tom winter is following the latest developments for us. what do we know about the plot and those suspected involved? >> this plot was allegedly discussed with the iranian revolutionary guard corp. and one of its former leaders was killed in the trump administration. thank you vowed revenge at the time. the revenge they wanted to serve up in the last couple weeks. this was discussed on october 7th. an irgc official is talking to shaqiri, who is living in tehran. he lived in new york city and was convicted of robbery and served jail time. for shaqiri, he's on the phone with the irgc. they're saying effectively there is no cost, spare no expense.

we need to put together a plot to kill donald trump to revenge the death of sole hey mani. they said perhaps after the election his security will go down if he loses. this was relayed by shaqiri to the fbi. >> can we dig into that? it's fascinating. the fbi says the iranian suspect engaged in voluntary phone calls with the fbi and explained some of the details of the plot. who is he working for, the fbi or iranian government? he seemed to be comfortable talking with them. >> not something you would normally do in the course of one of these interactions with the fbi. he's in tehran talking to federal agents in new york. he speaks to them five times, including yesterday according to the criminal complaint and their allegations. what he was trying to do is he had somebody else he knew in prison in the united states. he thought if he cooperated he

could get a better prison sentence or reduced prison sentence for somebody he knew. >> it wasn't just the president-elect, also a journalist. what should we know about that? >> it's only the third time she's been targeted for a murder for hire plot by the iranians. she's an iranian/american journalist. we're looking at a video she shot. she's in europe and she put out a statement. she's been very outspoken against the iranians. three separate instances where the iranians have tried in some way, shape or form to kill her. she's included in this document, along with several other victims. there's a reference to a recent sri lanka plot against israeli citizens. this is something the fbi has been tracking for a while. >> tom winter, thank you so much. president-elect donald trump

is one win away from officially sweeping the battleground states. nbc is projecting him as the winner of nevada. he lost the state in 2016 and 2020. this leaves arizona as the only swing state left uncalled. president-elect trump is ahead. the nbc news decision desk says it's too close to call. dasha burns is in west palm beach, florida. dasha, we know the first member of president-elect trump's cabinet now. no more election talk. susie wiles will be the white house chief of staff. we talked about her with you yesterday. can you remind our viewers about her background and what's the reaction? >> reporter: talking future now. a lot of folks at home may not know the name susie wiles, that's her super power. she's a behind the scenes operator, staying in the

shadows. she's credited with the reason -- it's largely viewed as the most professional campaign. there's been much less drama compared to the past campaigns and his first administration, fewer leaks. she's that no nonsense, no drama character that has said let trump be trump, but kept the train on the tracked and reigned in the chaos. >> other key roles are being discussed, cia director, former intelligence officials saying they're worried the president-elect will try to weaponize the agency. there is one name in particular. what should we know? >> reporter: so, look, the priority for the former president this time around is people who are loyal to him, who will enact his agenda and who will execute what he tells them to do.

he felt like that was his achilles' heel in his first administration. he had career civil servants in the first administration. this time around that's not necessarily going to be the case. when it comes to cia director, the name being floated is kash patel. he's a lawyer. he's very much a trump loyalist. he agreed with the former president and spread the conspiracy theories around a stolen election in 2020 where there's no evidence. in trump's first administration he tried to install patel as the deputy director to the cia and the director at that time gina haskell said she would resign. there's some concern that people are loyal to trump and not the constitution. let's head to cnbc's money minute. we have good news for android

in southern california firefighters are struggling to maintain the fast-moving mountain fire since it started wednesday. the wildfire has spread to more than 20,000 acres, destroyed more than 100 homes and forced hundreds of people to evacuate. morgan chesky joins us now. you've been out there a few days. strong santa ana winds have been fueling the fire. where do the containment efforts stand now? >> reporter: 7% for the containment of the mountain fire. you can see the damage it's left

behind. the remnants of this home run of about 130 that have been declared absolutely destroyed as a result of this fire. nearly 100 others reporting damage right now. heart breaking sights. that 7% containment while it may not sound like much, it's encouraging because this was a fire in 24 hours exploded to 14,000 acres forcing thousands of people to evacuate. today we're seeing a couple people try to get back and survey what's left. as you can see behind me, very little, if anything, can be salvaged right here. fortunately those santa ana winds that were so crucial in fueling this fire have since died down and they are expected to remain at least calm wind-wise here over the next couple days. that will allow the containment to go up significantly. they're able to do water drops now in a more precise manner

because the winds have died down. this fire still very active and still incredibly tragic when you see the damage it's done. >> morgan, california governor gavin newsom declared a state of emergency in ventura county. what does that mean for residents there? how soon should they expect help? >> reporter: step one is getting back once evacuations are lifted and seeing the extent of the damage left behind. we know that some of the evacuations are being lifted as the fire is starting to shift. in the meantime, there are relief centers that have been opened up in ventura county. keep in mind that this is the largest fire, but there are several other smaller fires that sprung up as a result of those santa ana winds. this fire fight is ongoing. >> stay safe, morgan chesky. we're following a new twist

in the menendez brothers fight for freedom. weeks ago the l.a. county district attorney said the brothers should be resentenced. now he's been voted out of office. liz corey reports on what that could mean for their case. >> reporter: after an ambitious prediction -- >> i believe before thanksgiving they will be home. >> reporter: -- eric and lyle menendez facing a new wrinkle with the newly elected los angeles district attorney set to take office delaying their sentencing hearing. nathan hawkman said he'll need to review all the evidence. >> if i need more time, i'll ask the court for more time. i won't engage in delay for delay sake. the menendezs need to know what the answer is. >> reporter: this the latest twist in a case thrust back into the spotlight 35 years after the

murders of eric and lyle's parents which the brothers called self-defense after years of alleged sexual abuse from their father. interest in the case and sympathy for the brothers fueled by netflix's retelling of their stories with some celebrities and tiktokers advocating for their release. >> what's the other side folks aren't hearing? >> they're probably not hearing so much from the people that actually worked on the case. those people take a much harsher view of this case than social media does and celebrities do. >> reporter: in a "dateline" keith morris talks to some of those people, including the original prosecutor who says she doesn't believe the brothers are sexually abused and is questioning the letter eric allegedly sent to his cousin. >> i would love to know when that letter was written. >> you don't think it was

2000 stolen vehicles, and the seizure of 124 illegal firearms. there is shock and anger after racist texts were sent to black people across the country. one day after the election. as nbc bay area's bob redell reports, the fbi is now investigating. the fbi says it has launched an investigation to find out who was behind these disturbing racist texts. nbc bay area spoke with latoya buford. she's a mother visiting the bay area for a work conference. she says her 16 year old daughter and many of her daughter's friends received those texts, letting them know that they've been selected to pick cotton. i said, which students? i said, was it just the black students? she said, yes, and a lot of students got it. and the part about that really gets me is that not only was it the black students, but they are using her full name. i think that this is intentional to scare people of color. black people, into a reality that we don't want to go back to. that was a publicist from atlanta who also received one of those

texts. she's concerned how the sender not only got her number, but knew her full name and race. several universities also confirmed students on their campuses received the messages. it's not clear who is behind the texts, but texts now, which offers free online phone numbers, said one of its accounts might have been involved. texts now said, quote, we do not tolerate or condone the use of our service to send harassing or spam messages. again, the fbi tells nbc bay area it is investigating bob redell. nbc bay area news. thank you. bob. you could soon be paying more money at the gas pump. the california air resources board is meeting today to vote on an update to the state's low carbon fuel standard. the proposal would lower carbon emissions at a faster rate. it's part of governor newsom's goal of cutting emissions in half by 2030. but it would also increase costs for petroleum refineries, which means paying more money for gas. critics estimate an increase of about $0.50 a gallon. all right. some good

here are some of the stories making headlines on "nbc news daily." a 13-year-old has been arrested in wisconsin after police say he tried to enter an elementary school. school staff saw him and confronted him. he fled causing the school to be placed on a hold. the teen was a former student at the school and there was no reason for him to be there. police say during the course of their investigation they found a video of the teenager practicing techniques with a rifle and online searches related to school shootings. the search is on for dozens monkeys that escaped a south carolina research facility. police say 43 monkeys left the facility after an employee left the gate open. police say traps have been placed in the area to safely apprehend the animals.

off a trifecta in washington, control of the white house, the senate and the house of representatives. joining us now is ali vitali back at her post in washington, d.c. walk us through where we are seeing the former president build out his coalition and kind of cut into traditional democratic strong holds. >> reporter: this is where they take away the map and the big board behind me. the fact that former president trump is sort of being able to remake this map, at least take most of the battleground states, you're right we're waiting for arizona. it speaks to the idea that my sources have been talking about, which is this idea of a trump wave that didn't extend further down the ballot. if you were to look at this map right now you're seeing a whole lot of red. if you were to flip to the senate version of that map, you would see in several states like michigan, like wisconsin, like most likely nevada and

potentially arizona, those are then states that at the senate level voters there were clearly willing to ticket split. while they were voting for trump, they kept or elected democrats into their other statewide office from a senate perspective. it's an interesting dynamic even as trump rolls into washington controlling all three branches of d.c., on his side of pennsylvania avenue and the congress side. we're still waiting on the house. >> to that end, let's turn to the balance of power in congress. there are still two dozen uncalled house races. which ones are you closely watching? >> reporter: there are a few that are going to be important. even overnight we made some critical calls, specifically in the state of new york. it shows that democrats have been able to retake what they lost in 2022. you'll remember that in 2022 republicans' path to the majority went through the empire

state. it made it into a battleground and democrats were aware of that. it's why they mobilized to take back many of those seats. they were able to win back one in syracuse area, flip one in long island. those flips are critical if they have hopes of taking back the majority. democrats are holding out optimism. they see a path. that path is narrow. republicans taking the tact right now they assume they'll have another moment in the majority. in a world of tight margins and the last two years in this republican-controlled congress, it's been a real story line, the close margins. this one will be even closer. it's going to be a bumpy ride. >> ali vitali, thank you. the fbi and fcc are investigating a series of racist texts sent to black people

across the country. i spoke with a victim who received this message. >> reporter: corey freeman was at home wednesday when she got a text from a number she didn't recognize. >> it was this odd feeling text message saying, hello, you've been selected to be a slave on a plantation and you're scheduled to get picked up at 12:00 a.m. on november 13th. >> how did it feel when you got that text message? >> well, i was immediately disturbed. >> reporter: she's not alone. social media sites have been flooded with people from new york to california who say they gotten these racist messages. freeman and others believe the texts may have been sparked by the political climate.

>> reporter: the wording of the texts differ. some have misspellings, others address individuals by name. telling recipients they've been selected to pick cotton. all the people who nbc news spoke to arrive black. clemson said they came from numbers associated with online spoofing sites. text now telling nbc news at least one of its accounts may be involved writing, we don't tolerate or condone the use of our service to send harassing messages. they shut down the accounts. they're working with authorities. for recipients, the digital hate is fueling real-world concerns. >> i'm overwhelmed with anxiety and fear about how i'm going to help my children make sense of the world that they have to navigate as black children. >> some messes reference president-elect donald trump by name, falsely saying they're

from the trump administration. the trump campaign is saying they're going to take steps to stop it if the origin can be found. the fbi has not confirmed that these messages are originating overseas or domestically. let's turn to today's daily health. we're going deeper on a story we brought you yesterday, a common over the counter drug found in cough and cold medicines could be pulled from shelves. the fda saying the oral version of the drug is ineffective. joining us now dr. ben gupta. last year cvs stopped selling these products after the fda said it was ineffective. if people at home have those products, should they be concerned? >> the short answer is no.

>> reporter: earl and leslie were newlyweds when they moved here in 1966, adding the tree a year later. when the family planted the tree in 1967, it was about waist high. 57 years later, you can see this norway spruce is 74 feet tall. >> we used to decorate it when it was small. then it got so big i couldn't decorate it. >> reporter: they always enjoyed it from earl's son michael and his wife shawn to their kids who played in the sand box shaded by the tree. it caught the eye of rockefeller's center's head gardener. >> michael said do you think he's an angel or something? >> reporter: days later leslie passed away. >> this is her handiwork. >> what do you think she's thinking? >> i'm thinking she's thrilled. >> reporter: they got a card
