a profile recall is still outstanding. we've got an update from election officials on where the ballot counting stands. plus, a big disruption to ballot counting in the south bay. how the state is responding to a serious situation at the santa clara county registrar's office. and after a dry start to the weekend, we're tracking rain headed to the bay area, where you can see showers in your neighborhood and when. good evening. thanks for joining us. i'm terry mcsweeney and i'm gia vang. we just voted. but there is political uncertainty in the east bay. tonight, voters in alameda county are waiting to see if both recall efforts will be successful. here is where

things stand in the effort to remove d.a. pamela price, 65% of voters say yes. she should be recalled. there are still too many ballots left to count, though, to make a definitive call. so the alameda county registrar of voters says his team is working hard to finish counting those ballots. everybody is very motivated to get as much done as quickly as possible. we know that there are some very high profile elections that people are watching, and we're just trying to get an accurate count and get those numbers out to the public as quickly as we can. and even though the count isn't complete yet, oakland mayor sheng thao is out after just two years in office. she has accepted the results of the recall against her. nbc bay area's alyssa goard explains what comes next for the town. reporter while there are still ballots to be counted, tao appears to be accepting that a recall is imminent. sharing in a statement late friday, quote, as the first hmong american woman to become mayor of a major american city, it has been the honor of my lifetime. she also says she plans to quote, support

a smooth transition. so what happens now? tao will not formally be removed until december, when the results are certified. then the city's charter says the council president, nikki fortunato bass, will take over as mayor. we've reached out to her office and are waiting to hear back. here's where things could get complicated. bass was also a candidate for the alameda county board of supervisors. the latest numbers show she's trailing behind her opponent with 46% of the vote in total. we have 334,000 votes posted. i'm expecting that's about halfway there. if bass wins, the oakland city council will have to elect a different council president. when bass leaves to sit on the board of supervisors. in the meantime, the registrar of voters says his team will be working all weekend and into next week, counting those remaining ballots. alyssa goard, nbc, bay area news. the count continues in santa clara county. election officials say there are

still about 190,000 ballots to count. staff were there until about an hour ago, processing those ballots, but the count was delayed for hours today because of this. a bomb threat forced evacuations at the santa clara county registrar of voters office. workers waited outside while law enforcement cleared those buildings and similar threats made in southern california as well, and also maryland. they turned out to be unfounded. nbc bay area's christie smith reports from san jose. yellow tape directed people away from the santa clara county registrar of voters office in san jose this morning after a bomb threat. we have over 100 workers inside, and these are all extra help county employees and also our permanent staff. and we just had to drop everything and made sure to evacuate the building as soon as possible and make make sure everything was like locked and secured. michael borja is with the santa clara county registrar of voters office. we're still out here waiting to go back in

because we have over 200,000 ballots left to count. yesterday evening, this threat was sent by email to the registrar of voters email inbox. it was not seen or opened until this morning. the santa clara sheriff's office says once workers saw the threatening email this morning, they contacted law enforcement, who quickly roped off the area and help came from neighboring agencies. we called in canine units immediately. we began an extensive search room by room floor by floor, searching for any sort of suspicious device. they say nothing suspicious was found, and after the sweep, the all clear was given. this incident comes less than a week after the election and after similar threats were made to voter registration offices in orange and riverside counties yesterday. it's really too early to know if this is tied to other threats that have been occurring across the state. one thing i will say is that leading up to election day, on election day,

and now post election day, we have been coordinating with our surrounding regional, state, federal partners. in a statement, the california secretary of state said in part, i am aware of bomb threats targeting our elections offices in california. these acts are unacceptable and will not deter us. we will always stand firm to keep our workers safe and ensure that every voice is heard and every vote is counted. back in san jose, workers were allowed back in the building around 1:00 and continued counting. we will be continuing to process ballots throughout the weekend and also on the holiday on monday, and we'll do whatever it takes to finish counting the ballots. christie smith, nbc, bay area news. turning now to weather. taking a live look across the bay area, we have enjoyed mostly clear skies today, but changes on the way. let's get right over to rob mayeda, who is tracking the r-word rain. yes, this time

tomorrow night, in fact, we'll probably see a few showers starting to show up on the radar right now. it's a pleasant evening around the bay area. just those partly cloudy skies as we take you on the satellite view, you can see mostly high clouds over the bay area right now. and here's the first of two weather systems that will approach the north coast heading into tonight. and tomorrow, which by sunday night, northwestern sonoma county and along the coast could have some drizzle. but the main event for the rain is right there into that monday forecast. some locations could go over a half inch of rain and it is cold enough for sierra snow. so the end of the holiday weekend there monday could involve chain controls going up on those cierra roadways. this is the first weather system that's rolling in monday that brings those rain chances. that could see a follow up from wednesday possibly into next weekend. that 7-day forecast trending up a lot more rain and a lot more sierra snow. we'll give you the full timeline on our forecast coming up in a few minutes. all right rob, thanks. and don't forget you can track the weather while

you're on the go with our free nbc bay area app. just scan that qr code right there on your screen to download it. we just redesigned the weather section, by the way. it is more accurate than the weather app on your phone. new details tonight about an hours long standoff in contra costa county. police have identified the man involved. this all started 4:00 yesterday afternoon. that's when antioch police say tony lamar watson kidnaped and assaulted a woman near dallas ranch park. when officers got to the home, the woman was outside. but watson was barricaded inside and he had a knife. the swat team was called in. neighbors were told to shelter in place around midnight. police say they used a tactical drone and tear gas to get watson out of the house and arrest him. san francisco based startup opendoor is laying off hundreds of workers. the company buys homes, makes minor repairs and resells them, charging sellers a fee for the process. well, opendoor says it plans to lay off 300 employees. that's 17% of its workforce. companies reporting a $78 million loss for the first half of this year. it

says it is struggling because of high mortgage rates and a challenging housing market. the company has already cut nearly 1100 jobs over the past two years. well, people in the east bay are marking a somber anniversary in the israel-hamas war. it has been one year since palestinian children held a press conference at the al-shifa hospital in gaza, and during that press conference, children criticized israel for bombing hospitals and homes and leaving them without food and water. today, several palestinian organizations held their own children's press conference at the oakland children's hospital. organizers say the event is meant to remind people that palestinian children continue to suffer in gaza. i hope that people who are able to see our community come together to see children themselves speak to why this genocide must end, will move people to take action. we're one year in. children are dying. i think 67 children in palestine are killed every

a crashed a postgame interview with his teammates on sunday night football. there he is right there. he was wearing a make america great again hat. the nfl prohibits players from wearing a personal or political message on their clothes while on the field. well, the league initially pushed back its announcement of the fine until after tuesday's election. bosa will have to pay about $11,000, he commented on the decision,

of art history and culture in the city by the bay. today, crowds gathered to kick off the year long 100th anniversary of the san francisco legion of honor. monday marks 100 years since the museum opened its doors to show off its world class art collection. it was also built to honor nearly 4000 californians who died in world war one. the museum's columns are replicas of the original legion of honor in paris. the museum, which has an incredible view of the golden gate bridge, not only draws in tourists. the director says it's a place where people come to learn and find inspiration. this museum opened for the residents of san francisco and over the decades, it's built up into one of the leading museums in the country, primarily here for european art and mediterranean antiquities. but we also do exhibitions of contemporary artists. former house speaker nancy pelosi was among the dignitaries at today's event, and also featured a marching band, a huge cake. they

you know, out at vandenberg space force base, we were flying out of burbank. flight was delayed. an hour, but it was perfect timing for. yes, they'r. so you don't always expect to see that looking out the window. i know the flight attendants are probably wondering why i had the iphone pressed up against the window in the dark, but that was it. spacex launching there from a spectacular video. rob. yeah, and we didn't have clouds in the way. it would have been tough to see that. yeah, but you know, it's been a nice start to the weekend. we've had the partly cloudy skies very dry this week, but boy, some big time changes just around the corner that will bring rain, sierra snow and multiple chances of seeing rain ahead in that 7-day forecast. well speaking of airports let's take a look at sfo right now. it's 56 degrees. not as windy and not as dry. that's been a nice change as we get the onshore winds back 55 degrees. currently in san francisco. walnut creek, also 55 degrees and into san jose 59 degrees. partly cloudy skies. areas of drizzle possible for the morning

on the coast. partly cloudy skies so the better part of the day looks a lot like today. until we head towards late afternoon and evening, we begin to see the clouds on the increase around the north bay, and that will lead to a chance of a few light showers late day from about sonoma county northward. morning temperatures starting off in the 40s and 50s and again like we had today around the south bay. tomorrow should see highs in the 70s. partly cloudy skies. san jose southward. similar temperatures around the tri-valley. but notice as we move to the coast and northward towards san francisco. upper 50s around half moon bay. low 60s in the san francisco and north bay. highs tomorrow. staying in the 60s as the clouds continue to thicken on up, leading to the chance of showers in the north bay late sunday evening. and that's your monday forecast. fast moving cold front there that will bring the rain into monday. this is what we're looking at late tomorrow evening into sunday night. the chance of a few showers in the north bay, then the rain should pick up mid morning to midday and that could

be pretty impressive. rain rates there midday on monday and then skies clear as we head towards the evening. so rain totals as we head into that monday forecast about a 10th of an inch. or as you see right there, possibly as much as a half inch of rain around the north bay mountains, east bay hills, and perhaps down towards the santa cruz mountains. that's the monday chance for rain. tuesday looks dry and then more rain chances right there into wednesday. and notice how the low really doesn't go anywhere. we continue to see the chances of showers, ongoing chances of sierra snow. we're talking wednesday off and on into thursday and friday. and now as we move forward into next weekend, saturday right now trending dry. but we could be back at it again by sunday. so that is a very active looking 7-day forecast. as you can see, we'll bring those multiple rain chances through the end of the week. so san francisco tomorrow increasing clouds cool finish to the weekend. rainy mid day monday and more showers possible wednesday through friday and then stay tuned if you have plans for next weekend. right

when the 49ers play at tampa bay today, the team officially activated christian mccaffrey, the all-pro running back missed the first two months of the season with injuries to his calf and both achilles. he was limited, but took part in all four of the team's practices this week. the niners say he's looked good, had no setbacks and is ready to roll. yeah, we're excited to have him back. yeah, he should be good to go here. and you know we got to be smart with him. so we'll see. we'll find out as the game goes. what the exact plan is. but i just know we're pumped to have him back. the last eight weeks were extremely unfortunate for me. you know, it's very tough being injured. it's tough physically, mentally, emotionally, you know, especially when it's just not how you planned it wasn't expected and some stuff just went wrong. but i'm feeling great now. ready to go college
