"early today" starts right now. good morning. i'm frances rivera. we begin with the wildfires raging on both coasts. in california, firefighters are battling the so-called mountain fire. thousands of people have fled their homes, and more than 100 structures have been destroyed, authorities say. the fire is currently 31% contained with more than 20,000 acres burned. in new york, a state park employee has died fighting the jennings creek wildfire. a record dry period has fueled several wildfires on the east coast. here is george solis. >> reporter: raging firefighters throughout the northeast have transformed vibrant fall scenery into hellish land scapes. >> trees an brush burning going

up the hild rapidly. >> reporter: burning about 170 acres in these mountains prompting the temporary evacuation of about 100 homes. >> it's for our safety. it's getting too close to our house. >> reporter: even with the winds dying down, hot spots like these are still a major concern. firefighters heavily dousing the areas with plenty of water. fire officials now hoping to catch a break from mother nature. >> you know mother nature. it doesn't always cooperate, or she doesn't always cooperate with what we need all the time. >> reporter: in new jersey, crews responding to around 40 fire calls in the last two days, including this one. >> we're putting a lot of labors into putting the fires out. it takes a lot of water. >> reporter: while in brooklyn, new york, firefighters rushing to contain a brush caused by heavy winds and dry vegetation from prospect part. this video showing firefighters spending more than three hours fighting the fire. the smoke blanketing the iconic new york city skyline.

in southern california, this video showing water drops from one of the nearly 3,000 first responders battling the mountain fire. >> it was a matter of minutes. it was that quick. it was like a storm i've never seen before. it just swirled. it took everything. >> reporter: while some homes were spared, others were not. a chimney all that's left standing from this home. back east, 27 million remain under fire alerts. the danger far from over. >> and our thanks to george for that report. let's turn now to the latest results still coming in from the presidential election. nbc projects that donald trump has won the state of arizona, a state that president biden narrowly won in 2020. that means president-elect trump has won back all of the battleground states that flipped blue in the last election. we're still waiting to find out the balance of power in the house. s 17 seats still need to be call.

the gop picking up a net gain of at least three seats. nbc news has spoken to two sources familiar with the transition process. they say the president-elect is favoring people for his cabinet who come from outside washington and people who have business experience over members of congress. late last night, mr. trump announced that tom homan will take the role of the border czar in the new administration, and he will be in charge of all deportations. homan served as the acting director of i.c.e. during the last trump administration. he enforced the zero tolerance family separation policy. nbc news has reached out to homan for comment. mr. trump also had a message for whoever wins the role of senate majority leader, saying they should let him bypass senate confirmations and make recess appointments. senator john thune, rick scott, and john cornyn are running to replace mitch mcconnell as leader. senator scott quickly agreed with the president-elect. senator cornyn wrote that it is

unacceptable for democrats to block appointments. and senator thune says the senate must act quickly, and all options are on the table. donald trump will make his first return to the house on wednesday. president biden has invited him for a meeting at the oval office to mark the peaceful transfer of power. president-elect donald trump is said to have called russian president vladimir putin last week and advised him not to escalate the war in ukraine, according to a "washington post" exclusive. several sources familiar with the call spoke to the post, but trump's team would not confirm nor deny trump's alleged message to putin. and nbc has not yet verified the call which is said to have happened thursday from trump's florida resort. for more let's turn to nbc's matt bodner. good morning, matt. >> frances, good morning. according to "the washington post," president-elect trump spoke to putin last thursday. this marks the first time the two have spoken since trump won reelection last week. we still do not have a full picture of what the two discussed, but the post is

reporting that trump warned putin not to escalate the war in ukraine. trump of course boasted during the campaign that he could end this war in as little as 24 hours. trump reportedly also reminded putin on that phone call of the u.s. military's significant presence in europe. trump's communications director told reuters on sunday they do not comment on private calls with other world leaders. we have not yet confirmed this call directly. this reporting on trump's conversation with putin, it follows a call with ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy. that took place on wednesday. and a source familiar with the matter told nbc news that elon musk was present with trump during that call, and even took the phone to speak with zelenskyy himself. it's not yet entirely clear what the incoming trump administration plans to actually do with the war in ukraine, though many critics have expressed concern that trump will push ukraine to accept major territorial losses to end this war with russia that of course is an outcome that ukrainian officials have

explicitly rejected. also unclear is musk's role in this process. t"the wall street journal" reported that musk has been in regular contact with putin since 2022 and at times the tech mogul has openly criticized u.s. support for ukraine. president-elect trump will meet with president biden in the oval office this week. and biden is expected to make an appeal to the president-elect to maintain america's support for ukraine. back to you, frances. >> matt, thank you. one person was killed and 16 others injured in a shooting attucks gee university in alabama during homecoming weekend. dramatic video shows people sheltering behind a car. a 29-year-old man was later arrested and charged with possession of a machine gun. authorities say they're still gathering information on what led up to the shooting. the victim is an 18-year-old who is not affiliated with the university according to tuskegee officials. winter came early to parts of the west bringing the third

britain's princess kate has resumed her official royal duties after being diagnosed with cancer earlier this year. king charles has also undergone cancer treatment, and prince william is describing 2024 as the hardest year of his life. meagan fitzgerald reports from london. >> reporter: princess kate back in the public spotlight, attending her first official event since revealing her cancer diagnosis in march. kate joined by prince william and king charles for the festival of remembrance at royal albert hall. honoring the nation's sacrifices in world war i. kate has slowly returned to public duties since announcing in september she completed chemotherapy. >> my healing and full recovery are long, and i must continue to take each day as it comes.

>> reporter: last month she made her first community outreach since her diagnosis, an unofficial event, joining williams to visit the family of three girls killed in a stabbing attack this summer. also lending support to fellow cancer patients, meeting 16-year-old liz haddon at windsor castle. but questions about her health remain now that she has returned to public duties. we don't know a huge amount about catherine's present state of health. does that mean she is in remission? does that mean she has any cancer at the moment? >> reporter: william reflected on the year. "it's probably been the hardest year of my life," he said, adding i'm so proud of my wife. i'm proud of my father. king charles is still receiving cancer treatment, but just completed a whirlwind tour of australia and samoa. >> and our thanks to megan for that report. here in the u.s., we are honoring our nation's heroes with veterans day. in middletown, connecticut, the community came together to place over 13,000 flags at a veterans
