again tonight. >> and here on the east coast, a series of wildfires fueled by a record dry period turned deadly over the weekend. an 18-year-old state park employee, killed by a falling tree here in new york. >> adding to these extremes, in denver, a major winter storm has dropped more than two feet of snow, snarling traffic and causing a number of power outages. >> we've got it all covered, including al's forecast, but we'll begin with dana griffin in california. good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. firefighters making progress over the weekend, increasing containment to 31%. while the fire is not close to neighborhoods, residents are returning and now coping with the aftermath. it was the type of firestorm experts had feared. bone dry conditions combined with powerful santa ana winds, pushing embers for miles, spreading frames through residential neighborhoods.

while fighting a blaze in new york this weekend. he was just 18. over the weekend, in brooklyn, new york, firefighters rushing to contain a brush fire caused by heavy winds and dry vegetation in prospect park, smoke from multiple fires in the area blanketing the iconic new york city skyline. back in california, crews are racing to fully contain the mountain fire here in ventura county before destructive dry santa ana winds return again. the cause of the mountain fire is still being investigated. firefighters tell me there's still a lot of dry brush that did not burn this time around, so they are warning people ahead of that next santa ana wind event to pack and prepare now. that's your documents, important medication, and be ready to evacuate immediately. savannah? >> all right, dana, thank you very much. let's bring in al. he's been tracking the fire danger and a little rain we needed on the east coast. >> that's right. record 87% of the lower 48 states are in drought.

49 states reporting some drought, and especially here in the northeast, we've got 57% of the area in a moderate drought, and some places, 20% in a severe drought. now, we have had those wildfires burning, some popping up, some dying down, but you can see air quality alerts stretching from detroit all the way to boston to moderate to unhealthy. the good news is, cold front has pushed through. that brought some showers, not enough to break this drought, by any means, but it is going to at least tamp down some of these morning rain and clouds, will gradually clear, but we'll get some like effect snow showers along the leeward side of the great lakes, and morning scattered showers up in the northeast and new england. and strong winds will still keep the possibility of all those wildfires cropping up again. guys? >> all right, al, thank you. we turn now to donald trump's impending return to the white house. the president-elect naming new members to his second administration overnight as he prepares to meet one-on-one with

president biden this week. nbc's garrett haake joins us with the very latest. garrett, good morning. >> savannah, good morning to you. donald trump made it clear during the campaign that the border and his desire to implement a mass deportation plan would be top priorities in a new term. overnight, he took a first real step towards implementing those priorities, naming a top former border official to handle both issues, announcing the move himself before even a single cabinet secretary has been named. >> on day one, i will launch the largest deportation program in american history. >> reporter: overnight, president-elect donald trump announcing a key role in his new administration, writing that tom homan will oversee the nation's borders and will also "be in charge of all deportation of illegal aliens." the former i.c.e. acting director has been an outspoken critic of the current administration. >> i got a message to the millions of illegal aliens that joe biden's released into our country in violation of federal law. you better start packing now. >> reporter: he was also a

supporter of trump's controversial zero-tolerance policy, which led to thousands of families being separated at the southern border. homan recently asked on "60 minutes" about trump's future mass deportation plans. >> is there a way to carry out mass deportation without separating families? >> of course there is. families can be deported together. >> reporter: and it comes as trump is looking to consolidate his power in washington. >> we have taken back control of the senate. wow, that's great. >> reporter: on sunday, demanding that the senate allow recess appointments which would let the president-elect put cabinet officials in place without them going through the confirmation process or even getting a vote. the three possible candidates for republican senate leader quickly posting agreement. president biden is preparing to host trump at the white house on wednesday. it's the first encounter between the two men since their debate last june with biden's shaky performance forcing him out of the race. the president, ignoring questions on sunday.

in tel aviv. good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. there was more tension in amsterdam over the weekend with dozens of pro-palestinian activists arrested for defying a temporary ban on demonstrations, and now, israel's government is raising new concerns about the safety of its citizens across western europe. this morning, israel issuing new warnings to its citizens following last week's attack on soccer fans in amsterdam. israelis told to avoid major sporting events in cities across europe, including the national soccer team's match in paris on thursday. the government warning of planned attacks. president biden and other world leaders condemning the violence in amsterdam as a widespread anti-semitic assault. with a pro-palestinian crowd chasing israelis, surrounding and beating some of them. but footage also allegedly shows israeli fans attacking people. anti-arab slurs before the game. meanwhile, after a year of failed ceasefire negotiations in gaza, qatar says it's withdrawing as a mediator until israel and hamas show seriousness about reaching a deal. >> today is not israel that is standing in the way of a ceasefire in hostage deal. it is hamas. >> reporter: while a new u.n. report on the early months of the war finds 70% of those killed in gaza were women and children. israel rejecting the report's methodology but acknowledges it's killed around 20,000 civilians, along with a similar number of palestinian fighters who they say hide among the civilian population. our team on the scene of this israeli strike on a tent camp in the courtyard of a hospital. three people were killed, witnesses say. this woman fled her with her family from northern gaza. where do we go, she asks. no schools or hospitals are safe. and the israeli military says it

good morning to you. it is 726 right now. i'm laura garcia. here's a look at our top stories, including a new step in san francisco to boost pedestrian safety. i'm ginger conejero saab in san francisco, where the city is looking to take its first step in enacting daylight parking laws. the rules say you cannot park within 20ft of any marked or unmarked crosswalk. this parking space here is an example of where that might get tricky. there are no penalties to the warnings today that will come at the start of 2025. sfmta estimates about 5% of the city's 275,000 on street parking spaces will be impacted. one fed up south bay homeowner is taking action after being targeted repeatedly by male thieves. he says his mail was stolen twice within two days in the most recent incident was caught on camera friday after putting a gps tracker on a fake

garcia. happening now. closure of this veterans day for one east bay family on bob redell later today on this veterans day, a daughter here in the east bay will finally say good-bye to her father, who died while fighting in world war two. that was 80 years ago. this past june, the remains of lieutenant herman j. sundstedt were finally accounted for, and his remains flown back to the bay area on friday. this weekend, as you can see, traffic came to a stop in walnut creek as lieutenant sundstedt was honored with a procession for a fallen soldier and his remains reunited with his daughter, diane carbone of clayton. let's get a look at that forecast today. you can see that bob had that umbrella out kari raining. yes, it's raining across much of the bay area, and it will continue to get a little bit heavier over the next couple of hours as we see this rain moving from to north south and pretty widespread at 10 to 11:00 for the north bay, it's clearing around noon, and then it won't be until early afternoon when we

we appreciate all of our plaza folks, especially those who have served or are serving in our armed forces, and we say good morning to you, and happy veterans day. >> happy veterans day indeed. we're going to celebrate them in just a bit. let's get to the news, 8:00, we'll begin with the wildfires burning on both coasts this morning. in california, over 130 homes and structures have been destroyed, and more than 20,000 acres burned. al's got the latest on the fire conditions, but first, let's get to nbc's dana griffin in southern california this morning. dana, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. at this hour, the mountain fire has burned more than 20,000 acres, but some good news here. firefighters making progress over the weekend, containing this now to 31%. now, while the flames are not racing towards neighborhoods, firefighters we saw on friday using air drops to try to stamp out some of these flare-ups that popped up. we met residents last night that were returning home, many having firefighters help them sift

through the rubble to try to find family heirlooms. there were emotional support animals there to greet them. i spoke with one firefighter who described this as trying to put out a blow torch with a squirt gun, describing also the embers that flew through the air some miles away. that's why they consider this a dirty burn, because in neighborhoods, half the homes are standing. the other half are not. the cause of the mountain fire is still being investigated, but fire officials say there is still a lot of dry brush on the ground, so they are warning people ahead of the next santa ana wind event to prepare now. grab your important documents and medication, and be ready to evacuate immediately if fire officials give the go-ahead. back to you. >> tense times. all right, dana, thank you. winds in the region are expected to kick up again tonight, making things very tricky for firefighters. al's back now with the latest look on the conditions. >> hey, guys, good morning, and good morning to you out west. again, we're looking at those santa ana winds kicking up, but

meanwhile, the nfl connected the texans with nike, who has designed and supplied uniforms for every nfl team since 2012. we went to oregon to become the first broadcast news show inside the nike sport research lab. there, we met design director for nfl uniforms, ryan earhardt. when a team decides that they want to change their uniform, change their look, what happens next? >> we're talking about the houston texans today and they want to take the uniform to a much more modern space. >> reporter: there are rules. the nfl allows teams to have four uniforms. the home uniform with the team's signature color jersey and the away with the white jersey. they're also allowed two alternate uniforms where they can use current team colors in different ways. alternates can also be throwback uniforms, bringing back a look from a prior era, which the broncos and giants did this season. for their new design, the texans

♪ ♪♪ ♪ we are back on this veterans day with more beautiful patriotic music from the navy brand northeast ceremonial band. >> it is a day for taking a moment to honor and thank all of the men and women who serve our country. >> that's right, and this morning, we want to introduce you to four men who served in four different branches, the marines, air force, navy, and army, who recently took on a new mission to help their fellow veterans. nbc's sam brock is here with more. >> tough assignment. >> good morning, first of all, this was so inspiring to hear. these four men behind four branches all believe in being part of a community that's bigger than themselves.

they also believe in the power of sharing a story or two over some seriously good bourbon. so, they dedicated their efforts to fellow servicemen and women who made the ultimate sacrifice to their country, their message to all veterans, don't drink to forget. sip to remember. ♪ >> reporter: in bardstown, kentucky, the gateway to the state's famed bourbon trail, you'll find four men who know a little something about what it means to serve. they met through their careers and bonded over their love of country and bourbon. mike trot with the air force and cia. >> my father was in the army, was in the korean war, and my grandfather was in the first world war, so it was just a natural progression of thought that one day i would serve in the military. >> rick franco spent his childhood abroad before joining the marines. >> it was the formation of me wanting to serve my country. >> reporter: rj casey's dad was a fighter pilot, inspiring him to enlist. >> i got my start in special forces, and they referred to as green berets.

>> reporter: and harold underdown, a tier one navy s.e.a.l. for years. >> when you deploy in other countries, you learn so much. >> reporter: four men who chose to blent their military backgrounds into something to honor fellow service members, a bourbon called four branches that admittedly took their wives and families by surprise. you're going to start a what company? a bourbon company? >> oh, yeah. yeah, yeah. >> reporter: and what did you tell them? >> yeah, i got this great idea, honey. this is what i want to do. she looked another me like i had not one head but three heads. >> reporter: but the venture was always about more than developing their own recipe for a time-honored drink. >> we hear stories, sam. >> reporter: their desire to distill also comes from wanting a safe space for discussing pain and sacrifice. >> most of the time, when you hear voices, you say, don't listen to them. they're probably not good. but every now and then, there's a voice that makes sense.

and this voice said, "do a barrel bourbon for the guys in my old unit." >> reporter: rick's close friend he recruited to the cia, greg wright jr., years later becoming an inspiration for four branches. >> december 7th, 2005, greg did his first mission ever for the agency. day one, night one. he saved everyone's life. greg didn't come home, and i had to fly to bring him home. and then i had to answer to friends and family for the classified mission, and so it meant a lot to give back to the unsung shadows and to honor those warriors, and that's why this started. >> reporter: he called up mike, who was moved by the power of honoring what he said was a thousand gregs out there. >> there's an englishman that wrote a poem about not drinking to forget and that just kind of hit home. to me, people do drink to forget, so let's sip to remember instead. >> reporter: all four had a brief pause about producing a product that at times has been used as an escape for veterans. they also saw an opportunity to

face problems head-on together. is it in some ways a permission to have these difficult conversation fz with people that you want to connect with? >> i would say if you don't have those conversations out loud, somebody's going to have them in private, and that voice is not always the healthiest thing to listen to, but when you're around your friends and you're sipping to remember, it might start with tears, but you -- i mean, guys like us, we can't help but start laughing about the good times. >> our bourbon, we said this from day one. if we're going to raise a glass to the fallen, it's got to be good bourbon. >> reporter: so, this group of bourbon bad-asses tapped stevally, a master distiller, to craft a version with four ingredients, not the usual three. >> reporter: why is that so rare? >> historically, it's been three-grain bourbon. the fourth grain adds a complexity to the whole process. the fourth grain was introduced to it to give it a roundness. >> reporter: after seeing how it was made and with the poignancy of the purpose, we had to give four branches a try. >> you get a little bit of that
