"nbc news daily" starts right now. today, monday, november 11th, 2024. states of emergency. dangerous and destructive wildfires are raging from coast to coast fueled by high winds, warm temperatures and a historic drought. breaking news. guilty on all counts. jurors convict a man in death of two teenage girls killed back in 2017, that verdict just announced and the sentence he could face. first things first the 2024 election brought on a wave of change, we'll take you through history made from the west wing to the halls of congress. and proof of service, group of veterans have joined horses for a mission that's close to their hearts. a good veterans day to all of you out there.

we'll start this hour with the battle to contain several wildfires burning on both u.s. coasts. >> in california, near los angeles, the so-called mountain fire has charred more than 20,000 acres and more than 170 structures have been destroyed. high winds died down a bit allowing several evacuation orders to be lifted. >> more than a dozen wildfires in new jersey, new york and pennsylvania. an 18-year-old died battling those flames this weekend. bill karins is tracking conditions from coast to coast. we'll begin with dana griffin who has the latest on the fire burning in california. >> reporter: progress over the weekend, firefighters containing this fire to 36%, but the number of destroyed homes, has gone up to 174 destroyed homes, dozens more have been damaged. . he fire is considered a dirty

burn, you got embers that fly for miles and that's why in neighborhoods like this, the neighbors homes still standing but several behind me have burned to the ground. embers carried for at least 2.5 miles, another potential santaan wind event expected wednesday. those big raging active flames are no longer present but that doesn't mean that we're out of the woods yet, so officials are reminding people now's the time to gather those important documents, medications and have your go bag ready if they have to issue more evacuation orders they want to make sure people can evacuate immediately. several people have returned home, many trying to sift through the rubble to try and find family haireirlooms. 30,000 people live in this burn

the winds kick up tuesday night into wednesday. nothing like with the mountain fire. as far as the heavy rainfall goes, 4 inches with this next event tuesday into wednesday. we'll see high elevation snow, pretty high, all the way through the cascades and the sierras. the east, the bad air quality this weekend the rain event not enough, the first rain in six to seven weeks in many locations it was all about less than a half of an inch, expect more problems with fires in the east in the week ahead. president-elect trump further solidified his election victory this weekend. >> nbc news decision desk projects he won arizona. the president-lebt will nominate republican congresswoman elise stefanik as u.s. ambassador to

civil servants, he's not looking for that time this around, he's looking for loyalists. they'll find a way to do that. his early priorities who he's selecting to be around that, this time it's about loyalty not necessarily the right experience or credentials for the job. >> thank you as always. we appreciate it let's turn now to breaking news we're following out of delphi, indiana, a jury has found richard allen guilty of murdering two teenage girls. >> of 13-year-old abigail williams and 14-year-old libby german. let's bring in adrienne broaddus, just walk us through what the jury, what we know

about what happened inside that room as the jury spent so much time deliberating this. >> reporter: you're talking about 19.5 hours this jury deliberated. our team inside of the courtroom tells us that richard allen showed no emotion as those guilty charges were read. when that jury delivered the verdict. at one point he looked back at his family and mouthed, are you okay? on saturday the jury spent five hours reviewing evidence and witness testimony. keep in mind there were 17 days of testimony, 64 witnesses and dozens of audio clips and video played for the jury, including allen in his own words telling his wife in part, quote, i did it. i killed abby and libby. the defense challenged the reliability and the timing of those confessions arguing allen was held in solitary confinement for 13 months which impacted his mental health they say.

the defense also argued there was no dna evidence connecting allen to that scene, but just moments ago, in the last hour, this jury siding with the prosecution finding richard allen guilty on all four murder charges. he'll be sentenced next month and could face up to 130 years in prison. but after seven years tonight, a bit of closure and justice for the families of these two young girls and that town. >> thanks so much. time now for today's money minute. venom sinks its teeth into the box office. >> kate rogers joins us now. venom won the box office for the third straight weekend.

at this hour more than a dozen congressional races remain uncalled that means control of the house of representatives is still up for grabs. republicans only need five seats to clinch the majority, democrats need 13. at the same time an intense three-way race for gop leader is heating up in the senate over the weekend president-elect trump weighed in saying anyone running must support his bid to make recess appointments to bypass senate confirmation votes. joining us is ryan nobles. let's start in the senate, here, how is the president-elect ultimately impacting the state of the race for senate majority leader? >> reporter: there's no doubt that donald trump could pick the next senate majority leader, he has that amount of sway not only within the republican party but the conference itself, at this point he's been reluctant to do so but that's not stopped some of the candidates to accomplish themselves as a maga candidate. senator rick scott of florida of

the three contenders probably has the toughest task to becoming the next senate majority but scott has enlisted the help of conservative influencers. unfortunately for scott though, none of those have a vote in this secret ballot. number of his fellow senators come forward and endorse him at this point he remains probably the third out of three possible candidates with john thune and john cornyn leading the way. >> ryan, another thing we're waiting for that battle for rol. can you walk us through what races this ultimately will come down to. >> reporter: right now it's the republican's majority to lease. they're in position to hold on to that very slim majority. a number of races in california taking the golden tate a long time to cast and count their ballots. 17 seats that have yet to be

called by nbc news and in order for democrats to win back majority they'd have to take 13 of those 17 seats in order to be victorious. as it stands right now, many of these races seem to be breaking along the same line, we don't see that many flips necessarily happening as these races are ultimately counted and voted on, no matter what, though, this is going to be a very narrow majority for republicans or democrats and as we saw the last congress they can make legislating very difficult. >> ryan, thank you. catherine the princess of wales is back in the public eye, she made her official return to royal duties over the weekend following her chemotherapy treatments earlier this year. kelly cobiella has more.

>> reporter: it was a busy weekend for the royals. princess kate back in the spotlight, joining the royal family for a weekend of remembrance, the first consecutive public appearances since her cancer diagnosis. on sunday, taking part in somber commemorations at london's war memorial. the ceremonial events led by king charles with prince william at his side as the princess looked on from the balcony, bowing her head during a moment of silence. on saturday, she also joined the king and prince william at the royal albert hall. >> seeing her out and about at public duties will come as a huge reassurance for many people concerned about her health. >> reporter: the princess making headlines again, marking a milestone in her slow return to public duties since announcing she completed chemotherapy last september.

>> during what i can to stay cancer-free is now my focus. although i finished chemotherapy, my path to healing and full recovery is long. >> reporter: prince william opened up about his wife's health last week during a trip to south africa. >> she's doing really well. she's been amazing this whole year. >> reporter: and in a deeply personal interview, william reflecting on the toll the recent family has taken. it's probably been the hardest year in my life, he said. adding, i'm so proud of my wife. i'm proud of my father. >> we've seen a real change in the way that they have been talking publicly about private issues. >> reporter: kate has been more active in the past few weeks, last month making a surprise appearance alongside william. to visit the families of three girls killed in a stabbing attack this summer. also lending support to fellow cancer patients, meeting 16-year-old liz hatton at windsor castle. king charles just back from his first official tour overseas since going public with his cancer diagnosis is still receiving treatment.

chapter. they swooped in during the last six weeks, raised some money and got permission from the city for the parade in the east bay. one woman will say a final farewell to her father. she never got a chance to know. 80 years after he died in the second world war. as nbc bay area's bob redell explains, decades later, she and her family finally have closure. lieutenant herman j. sundstedt, who was in the army, fought and sadly died in world war two and then was declared missing in action. until this past june, when his remains were finally accounted for. in a story you'll only see on nbc bay area, his remains were flown to the bay area this past friday, and this weekend. as you can see, traffic came to a stop in walnut creek as lieutenant sundstedt was fallenoler and h remainsn for a reunited with his daughter, diane kabine of clayn. carbine, who is now 80 years old, was born a month after her father was killed while serving as a member of a composite unit

known as merrill's marauders. a growing up carbine always wanted to know more about her father, the man she never got to meet. i have felt his spirit with me all my life, but i've never touched him before, never met him before. but i did tonight. a lot of tears today. a lot of awesome. he was just. just to meet him, you know? he didn't go to my walk. me down the aisle for my wedding or anything. but this was just incredibly honorable. it's not clear we don't have the details as to why it took so long to return the lieutenant's remains, but for decades, the family was told her father's remains were unrecoverable until again june of this year, when his remains were accounted for. shortly after, a soldier met with carbine to give her the goodws . today, the family will enter his remains at a cemetery in lafayette. bob redell nbc bay area news. well, one organization helping military

families stay connected despite the distance of deployment. united through reading has recorded videos of service members reading stories for 35 years now. those recordings are then sent to children and loved ones at home, along with a copy of the book so they can follow along and the nonprofit says it can really help families adjust when a family member is deployed, especially with some of the younger families. what we hear is, you know, when the person, you know, the service member leaves it really disrupts that family routine. so this is a way for them to have that deployed or away service. member available on demand. any time somebody in the family is missing them, missing that connection, they can just pull up those videos and see them and hear their voice. now this week, more than 100 california schools get their own story time with the service member. you can go to united through reading.org for more information. well, keep your umbrellas handy next couple of days. here's meteorologist kari hall. well, we had a wave of rain moving through the bay

headlines on "nbc news daily." attorneys general is urging anyone who received racist test messages after the election to report them to authorities. they told individuals they were quote selected to pick cotton at plantations. the louisiana attorney general told nbc news this. >> we believe from what we've found so far that they're being routed through a virtual private network server in poland. but that doesn't actually tell us where the person is. >> several branches of the fbi are also investigating the messages. so far they've not said whether the texts originated domestically or overseas. officials are urging anyone who received the messages to avoid clicking any links and to contact local law enforcement or the fbi as soon as possible. take a look at this video from brooklyn over the weekend, a man is seen attempting to scoop a 6-year-old who was walking with the family. the child's father manages to

pull his son back down. the 28-year-old suspect was arrested the next morning, he faces several charges including attempted kidnapping, harassment. the young boy was not harmed. police say they have recovered 25 of the 43 monkeys who escaped from a south carolina research facility last week, veterinarians have examined ones found and say they're unharmed. they're watching another quote sizable group of monkeys along the fence line in that facility. 18 monkeys are still on the loose. police are still asking residents to call 911 if they see one. president-elect trump ran on a promise to carry out a mass deportation of migrants inside the united states. >> now mr. trump has selected the person in charge of that specific operation his name is tom homan previously served as the director of immigration in

what it collapse could mean? >> we're talking about ten feet of global sea rise which scientists think could happen pretty quickly. if you think about this in contest of a hurricane, enough to do incredible damage, 10 feet of permanent water, miami, honolulu, basically major coastal cities you can think about would be under water. but it's melting, 5% of the global sea rise that we're experiencing today. >> some of those images are almost surreal, chase, some scientists are hoping to geo-engineered a solution. >> reporter: they're calling this an underwater current. this glacier is melting because there's warm water getting

underneath it accelerating the melting of the glacier. it's trying to keep some of the warm water out from underneath to slow the melting a little bit. if you have a glass of ice water in a regular glass, ice cubes will probably melt pretty quickly. if you put it into an insulated can it will slow down. >> any alternative climate change solutions? >> we got to bring down the global warming, the emissions, burning fossil fuels heating up the atmosphere and the ocean, if they are able to slow the m melting of this one glacier, there are consequences far beyond this one glacier. >> chase, thanks so much. in today's daily health,
