"early today" starts right now. there is a sense of justice in the small town of delphien indiana after a man was found guilty of the brutal 2017 murder of two teenaged girls. a jury found 52-year-old richard allen kidnapped abigail williams and her friend liberty german and later slit their throats. the killings shocked the town and the nation. our maggie vespa was in delphi and spoke to locals about the legacy of the case. >> reporter: do you think this case will stick with this town? is sticking with this town. >> oh, absolutely. absolutely. >> if not just because of the court case but because two little girls died here. that's awful. that will always be in our hearts. >> allen made several confessions behind bars. his defense later tried to claim he was suffering from psychosis after more than a year in solitary confinement, something

the jury rejected. he will be sentenced on december 20th. we're getting a closer look at what donald trump's new administration had look like. florida senator marco rubio is expected to be named secretary of state. that's according to three sources familiar with the selection process. they did caution that the president-elect could still change his mind before a formal announcement is made. senator rubio is a member of the foreign relations committee who has become more aligned with mr. trump's views since running against him in 2016. for more on how the cabinet is coming together, here's nbc's garrett haake. >> reporter: president-elect trump making his first cabinet pick, tapping elise stefanic as ambassador to the united nations and lee zeldin as epa administrator. >> we have the opportunity to roll back regulations that are forcing businesses to be able to struggle. >> reporter: environmental

groups criticizing the pick and naming florida congressman mike waltz as national security advisor. it comes as the scope of trump's victory last week grows. nbc news projecting he'll win arizona, meaning trump swept all seven battleground states and leads vice president harris in the popular vote as counting continues. the vice president appearing with the president at a veterans event. while trump has begun filling out his white house staff, after campaigning on beefing up border security, including mass deportations of undocumented immigrants. >> on day one, i will launch the largest deportation program of criminals in american history. >> reporter: he's expected to name stephen miller as deputy chief of staff for policy and announced tom homan as border czar. both played key roles in trump's first term, including the separations of thousands of

shot at the plane, injuring one flight attendant. this comes the same day haiti swore in a new prime minister who promised to restore peace after violent political turmoil. let's bring in nbc's matt bodner for more. >> reporter: frances, good morning. dramatic images coming off that spirit airlines flight. the plane appears to have taken a number of hits. images showing damage to the exterior. as you mentioned, one of the flight attendants was injured, diverting to the dominican republic. the incident has forced other u.s. airlines such as jetblue and american to cancel their flights to haiti. one jetblue flight that took off yesterday was also later discovered to have taken fire. a statement issued by the airline says the operating crew initially thought everything was fine but

fine but later upon inspection they discovered it was hit by bullets. this is the latest in weeks of another round of political chaos in haiti. yesterday, a transitional council fired the sitting prime minister, replacing him with a local businessman and former senator. the united nations estimates that a coalition of armed gangs currently controls about 85% of the capital. of course port-au-prince. in these incidents with commercial aircraft may be part of what the u.s. embassy has been warning is an effort by the gangs to prevent anyone from getting in or out of the city. efforts to bring an end to the political turmoil in haiti have so far failed. but the new prime minister says his priority is to restore peace and hope and ultimately hold elections to move the country forward, frances? >> hope that is the case. police in amsterdam have arrested five more men over the

weekend. there's now eight total in custody. all of the men arrested are between the ages of 18 and 37 and have a quote, migration background. the unrest has continued this week with protests, vandalism and a tram fire. the clashes come after some fans chanted death to the arabs before the game. police are urging people to share any video footage they may have to help their investigation. two strong earthquakes struck off cuba's southern coast, damaging homes and triggering landslides in the area. a 5.9 quake hit first just before 11:00 a.m. sunday, about an hour before a 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck 24 24 24 mil south. wildfires are raging coast

to coast as the drought continues. one blaze has devoured 3500 acres and is 25% contained. meanwhile out west, thousands evacuated near reno, nevada due to the callahan fire where billowing smoke can be seen for miles. and in southern california, near 200 homes have been destroyed by the mountain fire, as officials brace for another round of santa ana winds. let's get a closer look at these drought conditions with nbc meteorologist angie lassman. angie, any, any precipitation or rain? the forecast? >> unfortunately, frances, it looks like we'll have to wait until thursday. in the meantime we have elevated red flag warnings in place. and hartford, georgetown, new york included in that. we have really dry conditions and winds are still expected to

be elevated through the day today. 34 mile-per-hour peak wind gusts for boston. over 30s for hartford, new york, and philadelphia. we could see some of those gusts up to 40 miles per hour as the day goes on. the drought continues to be of concern. we've got 57% of the region in this moderate drought. notice where you see the reds and deeper reds, that's extreme and exceptional drought. 20% of the region dealing with that. out west, a different story for parts of the pacific northwest. we're going to hear of a couple areas dealing with snowshowers. look at the next system that starts to arrive late today leaving us with heavy snow, heavy rain as well as th potential foe and atlanta. low 80s for jacksonville. 88 degrees in tampa.

we are back with a retreat helping veterans who suffer from ptsd on a journey to healing using outdoor activities and peer support. here's jay valle with the story. >> the tension that it brings us and release it. >> reporter: military veteran melanie stewart joining the army at 18, after 25 years of service, archery has become an outlet for her trauma. >> it gave me a tangible representation of what i was holding onto. >> reporter: stewart first felt the release of an arrow at the big red barn retreat here on 77 acres in columbia, south carolina. veterans like her find holistic healing and a supportive community. >> this is a place of their peers. fellow veterans, fellow first responders. the wall starts coming down, and they realize we're just here to help. we're here to restore hope. >> reporter: seven in every 100

veterans struggle with post traumatic stress disorder. on average, more than 17 veterans take thei livelives eve day. after losing her husband and father months apart it added to the weight she felt, making each day a battle of its own. >> i felt very alone. very alone. >> reporter: so how is this retreat helping veterans with ptsd? the counselors are focussing on post traumatic growth. since 2017, the group has served over 2500 veterans on their journey to healing. outdoor activities allow veterans to build personal strength, discover new possibilities and restore

relationships. the labyrinth exercise poses reflection. >> when they're ready to release the rock they release it. it's almost like the rock signifies all of the traumas and the dramas, as i call it, that they've had in their life. >> reporter: across the acreage, veterans are paired with horses and tasked with earning their trust. this sort of approach to therapy with the horse here, tell me about that. you said something about connection. >> that's exact ily it. it's connection. you've got to be calm, you've got to be breathing, relaxed. and you got to be where your feet are at. in order to connect with anybody you've got to connect with yourself first. >> reporter: more than half of their veterans experience post traumatic growth. five of seven say it has been more effective than traditional approaches to ptsd. >> what changes your life is the work that you put in, with the education and practices that we've given you. you are valuable, and you're
