tied to last week's anti-semitic attacks on soccer fans. also overnight, a second passenger plane hit by gunfire coming out of haiti. the plane arriving safely here in new york. this morning several u.s. carriers are now grounding flights in and out of that country. in the meantime, here in the northeast, there are new concerns over wildfires this morning. 25 million people now under red flag warnings because of those drought conditions and high winds. >> and in political news, multiple sources telling nbc news overnight that senator marco rubio, donald trump's one-time rival in the 2016 race, will be selected as his secretary of state. so we have a lot to cover. let's begin with nbc's garrett haake who is covering the trump transition. hey, garrett. good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning to you. with all things trump, nothing is ever truly official until he announces it himself, but we're already seeing marco rubio's likely selection to be america's

top diplomat, cheered by his senate colleagues who see him as a serious and substantive choice in dangerous times. with the expected selection of senator marco rubio as secretary of state, donald trump's next administration is coming into clearer view this morning, the two were opponents in 2016 in a primary that turned personal. >> do you know that in florida they hate little marco rubio so much. >> reporter: but rubio later became a staunch ally. >> we are patriots who love america. >> reporter: and this morning, in another key role, cnn reporting that trump has chosen south dakota governor kristi noem to run the national -- department of homeland security, according to two people familiar with the selection. noem, once on the short list to be trump's running mate, after suffering political fallout after revealing in a new book she shot her own dog. >> how are you guys? >> reporter: trump also naming florida congressman and former green beret michael waltz. to be national security adviser, and outspoken ally, new york's

elise stefanik. advising the president-elect on national security and the ongoing wars in europe and the middle east. trump also naming former new york congressman lee zeldin to lead the epa. >> the first 100 days, we have the opportunity to roll back regulationings. >> reporter: all of those picks, save waltz, must be confirmed by the senate. two trump hires focused on immigration, tom homan and steven miller. miller helped engineer the highly controversial ban on travel from several muslim majority nations while he and homan played influential roles with hard-line policy that led to the separation of thousands of migrant families at the border. >> the criminal migrants will go home and america will be reclaimed for americans. >> reporter: now tomorrow donald trump will travel back to washington for the first time since his second election victory. he's meeting with president biden in the oval office. right now there's no indication that melania trump will be joining him for any kind of meeting with the first lady and, as of yet, there's no meeting

announced between incoming vice president vance and the woman he and mr. trump defeated, vice president harris. if they happen, those traditional sitdowns will come at a later date. savannah? >> garrett, i understand you've learned more about what the president-elect might do on his first day. tell us about that. >> reporter: savannah, as of most recent presidents, we can expect a flurry of executive orders. trump's chief of staff, susie wiles told a group of gop donors yesterday that trump would move to reinstate some executive orders from his first term that were reversed by president biden, that's according to "the new york times," citing sources in the room. now wiles wasn't specific, but those actions could include things like trump's ban on travel from the muslim majority nations, actions on climate, on drilling, and, of course, on his top priority, sealing the border. with trump returning to washington as a lame duck already on day one, wiles told the donors they'll have to be prepared to move fast to accomplish his agenda. >> garrett, thank you. we move now to the breaking news overseas. dozens of people storming a commuter train in amsterdam and

setting it on fire. riot police had to be called in. this latest violence unfolding just days after that disturbing outbreak of anti-semitic attacks against israeli soccer fans. nbc's raf sanchez is in tel aviv with the details. raf, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. we saw more scenes of chaos and disorder in amsterdam overnight along with anti-semitic chants as a mob attacked a tram line, and this comes as dutch police say they're still hunting for people involved in last week's violence. overnight amsterdam erupting in chaos once again. a masked mob setting a tram aflame and shouting, cancer jews, as they hurl bricks through the windows. the group armed with sticks and fireworks. police say they restored order but adding it's not clear who started the violence or if it's connected to last week's clashes involving israeli soccer fans, according to the ap.

authorities announcing five more arrests to people allegedly involved in what the netherlands has condemned as anti-semitic violence. the footage also shows israeli fans attacking people, ripping down palestinian flags and chanting anti-arab slogans. a new report from the mayor says around midnight thursday a large group of israeli fans, some armed with sticks, carried out acts of vandalism. soon after, small groups of rioters spread throughout the city center and committed violent hit-and-run actions targeting israelis. there was talk on social media of a jew hunt, the mayor said. meanwhile, the skies over northern israel yesterday filled with hezbollah rockets. it comes amid intense israeli bombing across lebanon. the health ministry says hundreds killed in recent weeks. israel's new foreign minister saying there's cautious progress toward a lebanon ceasefire. >> we are working with the

americans on the issue. >> reporter: and all eyes now on paris where israel's national soccer team will be playing on thursday. israeli fans have been told to stay away from that game for their own safety, and 5,000 french police will be deployed to keep order. savannah? >> raf sanchez in tel aviv, thank you. let us turn to another developing story overnight. more u.s. airlines are canceling flights in and out of haiti. this after a spirit airlines flight was hit by gunfire forcing it to divert to the dominican republic and now we're learning there was another u.s.-based plane that was also struck by a bullet yesterday. nbc's tom costello covers aviation. he has the latest. tom, good morning. >> reporter: hoda, this was extremely dangerous. thankfully both aircraft landed safely, but these were clearly marked passenger planes with airline logos. much of port-au-prince is lawless, controlled by heavily armed gangs. whatever the motivation for these attacks, both could have ended in disaster.

this morning, grounded. u.s. airlines canceling flights in and out of haiti, and news of a second incident involving a passenger plane hit by gunfire. overnight jetblue announced one of its planes returned from port-au-prince on monday land safely at jfk in new york saying a post flight inspection found the aircraft's exterior had been struck by a bullet. some of the passengers from a spirit airlines flight that was also hit by gunfire as it approached port-au-prince monday are now back in florida. >> i could hear three distinct, crack, crack, crack, you know, over the back of the plane. >> reporter: video and photos from inside the plane show signs of the bullets that tore into the passenger cabin. on the plane's belly at least one bullet hole, an electrical line also apparently hit. >> i think the crew was traumatized. >> reporter: amazingly no

passengers were hit. spirit says one flight attendant did suffer a minor injury. spirit flight 951 was arriving from fort lauderdale when it was hit by gunfire from the ground as it approached port-au-prince. the pilots quickly aborted their landing and diverted to santiago in the dominican republic where spirit says an inspection revealed evidence of damage to the aircraft consistent with gunfire. aviation experts say gunfire could have easily hit the plane's fuel hydraulic systems. and cockpit, causing the plane to crash. >> this crew and passengers were very fortunate that luck prevailed and nobody in the airplane was injured and the airplane wasn't more critically damaged. this could have gone very badly. >> reporter: haiti has been wracked by brutal gang violence for years with a barely functioning government and u.n. peacekeepers from nigeria now on the ground. in september the state department issued a do not travel advisory for haiti warning the airport can be a

focal point for armed activity. but roughly four u.s. flights a day were still flying into port-au-prince. now american is suspending flights into the country until at least monday. jetblue says until december 2nd. this is changing quickly and we are also watching closely if the faa takes any action as well. hoda? >> tom costello for us in d.c. tom, thank you. also this morning, an indiana husband and father has been convicted in a double murder case that gripped the nation and went unsolved for years. a jury finding richard allen guilty on all counts in the 2017 killings of two teenaged girls who had been walking on a hiking trail in the small town of delphi, indiana. nbc's maggie vespa is at the courthouse for us. maggie, good morning. >> reporter: hey, savannah, good morning. this high-profile trial lasting nearly four weeks with a sequestered jury deliberating over the course of four days. and this morning the wife of the man they convicted is speaking out as the small town works to

honor two young victims. this morning, after years of mystery and days of deliberation, a conviction in the delphi double murder case. indiana pharmacy tech richard allen found guilty on all counts in the 2017 slayings of 13-year-old abby williams and her 14-year-old best friend, libby german, a crime that's forever shaken this small town. has this case changed delphi? >> yes. >> oh, without a doubt. i think it changes the way that the community interacts with each other. a lot more suspicious. >> reporter: a jury of eight women and four men agreeing with prosecutors' theory allen was the so-called bridge guy who forced the girls off a popular walking trail at gunpoint as libby recorded on her cell phone. >> guys, down the hill. >> reporter: prosecutors arguing he then slit the girls' throats and left them to die, but not before leaving a cartridge from his gun at the scene. they argued allen made multiple confessions behind bars playing

a recording of him telling his wife, i did it. adding, i killed abby and libby. the defense blasting allen's confessions as false saying he was suffering from psychosis after 13 months in solitary confinement. his legal team arguing there was no dna evidence tying allen to the scene and blasted the state's desperation after the murders went unsolved for five years. after the verdict was read, nbc affiliate wthr capturing this video of allen's wife outside the courthouse saying -- >> this isn't over at all. >> reporter: meanwhile, libby's sister posting on instagram, nearly eight years. today was the day. headed into the holiday season, delphi now decked in ribbons and signs to honor two girls taken too soon. >> two little girls died here, and that's just awful. they will always be in our hearts. >> reporter: richard allen's sentencing is set for december 20th.

scars like this that are more typically seen out of the west coast. this wildfire racing through the area in recent days, and you can see just how dangerous ly close it came to homes and neighborhoods. this morning dry conditions and whipping winds fueling new concerns over the firefight from coast to coast. 35 million facing elevated wildfire risk today. first responders battling the jennings creek fire that is spreading between new jersey and new york, scorching at least 3,500 acres. >> in my over 50 years of living here, this has been the most significant and probably the most potentially dangerous situation i've seen or been involved in. >> reporter: 18-year-old dariel vazquez, a parks worker was killed fighting the fire. a memorial held to honor the recent high school graduate. >> he was an amazing kid. he just saw an opportunity to make a difference. >> reporter: the wildfires in the northeast powered by an

unrelenting drought. this reservoir in chatsworth, new jersey, that normally floods the lee family's cranberry bog every fall for harvesting is completely unrecognizable told. we should not be able to be standing here right now. >> no, this would normally be below water. >> reporter: smoke could be seen for miles near reno, nevada, as a wildfire forced several thousand people to evacuate. while in southern california, families are salvaging what's left of nearly 200 homes destroyed by the mountain fire, which could intensify again today with wind gusts expected to reach up to 60 miles an hour. >> our house miraculously survived. of course, all these people didn't. it's very mixed emotions. >> reporter: and powerful winds are a major concern here in the northeast as well today. red flag warnings issued for parts of massachusetts, connecticut, rhode island, new york and new jersey.

here in new jersey the forest fire service has responded to more than 530 wildfires since october and, unfortunately, still counting, craig. >> it's been so dry for so long here. emilie, thank you. let's go to al now. you're counting looking at some of these big fires. >> i'm telling you, 35 million people really impacted by an elevated wildfire risk or red flag warnings. this high fire danger is because of two things. as emilie mentioned, gusty winds and low humidity. so we're looking at wind gusts today, 35 miles per hour in albany. boston, 34. new york city, 32 miles per hour. scranton, 30. so that's going to fan any wildfires. the other problem, the drought. autumn rainfall totals, 5 to 25% of average from worcester to hartford, allentown, scranton, new york city and newark, down to atlantic city. the driest fall on record in the season to date. in fact, hartford, almost 9 inches below where they should be this time of year. new york, 1.67 and we're looking

endured a 54-day-longer is of search for his remains on a lake where his kayak was found capsized and personal items recovered. the sheriff says there's no obvious motive here, but one thing is clear, he is not in that lake. ryan borgwardt's routine day on the water in early august turned out to be anything but after the 45-year-old from wisconsin left to go fishing and never came home. what happened next sheriff mark podoll says, left everybody stunned. signs the father of three faked his own death. have you in your professional law enforcement experience seen a case that even approximates this? >> no. and i've been in law enforcement for 42 years. i never experienced anything like this. >> in the immediate hours and days after borgwardt's reported disappearance search teams found a capsized kayak and life jacket in the deepest part of the lake, his van and trailer parked by the boat launch and eventually his fishing rod and a tackle box that also contained his keys and a wallet.

but after weeks of scouring green lake, no indication of the father of two high schoolers and a 7th grader. a search team from bruce's legacy, using sonar to search the lake. >> by the time we got into day ten, it was evidence that something wasn't right. >> when police reviewed the 45-year-old's laptop, they found a trove of information, including inquiries about moving funds to foreign banks. communication with a woman from uzbekistan, and a life insurance policy purchased in january. the sheriff says his passport was checked by canadian authorities the day after his reported disappearance. and in early october, borgwardt's wife learning of the investigation. and the sheriff speaking to borgwardt. >> contact us or contact your family. we understand that things can

fiction reader, sometimes. he's a lawyer from ohio who enjoys political books as well as classical novels. i mean, one of the things i think is so cool about reading is that every person does it for a different reason. >> the reason why i read now is because i feel like it's a mental workout for me. it's a way for me to, like, build that intelligence so that when i go into my meetings and when i'm doing things from a business standpoint, i'm sharp. i'm ready to go. >> i think with nonfiction you can take it at face value. with fiction it's a new way of sort of interpreting things. it kind of questions how you think about the world around you, and sometimes that's great and why i like reading fiction. sometimes at the end of the day it's easier to just read something that's a little bit more straight forward. >> how do you decide what to read next? because you've been trying to read more fiction, is that right? >> recently i put on my instagram story, i'm looking for fiction books and people kept on throwing off different names at me and like it's a thriller.

you would love it. i do some research and sometimes the two sentences doesn't reel me in. doesn't hook me. >> i wanted to encourage the gentlemen to try out more fiction. but, first, i thought i would bring in a professional to get his take on why fiction is worth our time. so i called "new york times" best-selling author who wrote the wildly popular novels "rules of civility," "a gentleman in moscow" and "the lincoln highway" selling more than 11 million copies. why do you think it's important that we read fiction? >> when we read a well-written novel, we become so bound up in the life of the main character or the main characters, and up see this, if something funny happens in the book, they laugh out loud, or you can turn and they're crying because they're wrapped up in the emotional setback of the character. when the character has a victory, yes! it's a very powerful means in which we build up. we start to see the world differently. and a lot of men will say to me, i like to read nonfiction

because i learn something. the best literary fiction, you will learn too. >> do you have advice for any men? >> go to your independent bookstore. ask to speak to the person in charge of buying and say, listen, this is what i've loved. what novelist, what novels would i enjoy? >> before i let the men go, i put amor's advice into practice. jordan wanted a book he could escape into. i recommended "chain gang all stars." it's dark but it is pro-pulsive, it makes you think. i feel it's the type of book you'll be into and will pass on. >> i love it. >> for justin, who likes history books, i recommended the book "the lincoln highway." think like odyssey like and it goes all along the lincoln highway across our country. >> this is great. my mother-in-law has been trying to get me to read this for the last two months. >> arman was looking for a mystery so i recommended "all the colors of the dark" by chris whitaker.
