president joe biden in a face to face for the first time since the election. we're live from washington with more on the transition of power. and as trump's cabinet continues to take shape, we're learning brand new details on the new immigrant detention centers. the incoming administration is now considering. also, some major changes could be in the works for oakland unified school district. the new proposed school mergers and the impact it will have on hundreds of kids. this is today in the bay. good wednesday morning. i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. we'll check that morning commute with mike in just a little bit. already on wednesday, kari got a look at what we can expect. weather wise. more changes for today. we're starting out dry and across the bay area. cool temperatures as we take a live look outside in san jose. it is only 47 degrees and it may even drop a couple of more degrees in the next couple of hours. and then we'll see partly to mostly
5:02 am
cloudy skies, at least into the early afternoon. but eventually this is going to be heading our way with some rain chances increasing for the late morning into the afternoon. first starting in the north bay. so at 11:00 we're seeing rain moving into ukiah, calistoga, santa rosa and san rafael and also just starting to approach napa before lunchtime. some scattered showers will continue through early in the afternoon and then eventually take a break for tonight. with the exception of the north bay, where that rain may linger a little bit longer into early tomorrow morning and then hit or miss showers in the forecast for tomorrow as well as friday. so i'm going to be tracking all the wet weather once again, not all of us seeing it, but it will have an impact on some of those outdoor plans. more on that coming up in a few minutes. back to you. all right kerry, thank you. we are following breaking news surrounding the transition of president elect donald trump's return to the white house. special counsel jack smith and his team plan to resign before
5:03 am
trump takes office. his office was evaluating the best path to wind down its work on the two outstanding federal criminal cases against donald trump. now, the justice department's long standing position is that it cannot charge a sitting president with a crime. our scott mcgrew is diving deeper into this and what it all means. he'll have a closer look coming up for us at 545. meantime, president elect trump will meet with president biden at the white house later today. with the senate shifting to republican control, the house now appears poised to do the same. trump will have an easier path for his agenda, given the republican legislative die that's now cast. today, in the bay's brie, jackson joins us live from washington this morning and brie, it is a tradition, but not a requirement for presidents to invite president elect into the white house. that's right. good morning, laura marcus. so president biden and president elect trump, they will discuss a peaceful transfer of power when he visits the white house later today. now, the meeting is a
5:04 am
tradition that mr. trump refused to uphold after losing the 2020 election. president elect trump returning to the white house at the invitation of president biden. his visit comes as the gop eyes control of washington. there's a lot of excitement, a lot of energy here. we're really grateful for president trump leaving it all on the field to get reelected. mr. trump is already filling key roles in his administration among them announcing former arkansas governor mike huckabee as his pick for ambassador to israel, also naming tech billionaire elon musk and conservative vivek ramaswamy to head up a new department of government efficiency. your money is being wasted and the department of government efficiency is going to fix that. as the president elect focuses on building his new team, republicans are gearing up to elect a new senate majority leader, mitch mcconnell announced he would be stepping down earlier this year. i'm so
5:05 am
happy that all of our new members are here to create that majority and give us a chance to make the kind of changes for america that the voters voted for. some of the newest members of congress voted in, arrived on capitol hill for orientation, including senator elect andy kim, a democrat from new jersey. i see just how much people were just feeling really unsettled about their lives, just feeling like, you know, government right now is not tackling things in any meaningful way, you know, in terms of their day to day livin. democrats reassessing after 2024 election losses. president elect trump looking ahead to inauguration day in january 2025 and president elect trump says he will pick kristi noem for homeland security secretary. she's been a supporter of mr. trump's hard line immigration policies. marcus, laura learning
5:06 am
who will sit with him more and more each day. new person. all right. thank you. brie. well, now to an nbc news exclusive. the trump administration is considering drastically expanding immigrant detention centers in the u.s. two sources familiar with the plan say conversations are happening with private prison companies. the centers will hold a vast amount of migrants for a short period of time before they are deported. coinciding with president elect trump's immigration policy. the plan would also include restarting the policy of detaining parents with their children, known as family detention. u.s. cities with large numbers of migrants like los angeles could need additional centers built. reopening and expanding existing facilities is also likely under the plan. well, later today, parents in oakland could have a better sense of the fate of their children's school as the district faces a budget deficit. today, in the bay's bob redell joining us live this morning. and bob. oakland unified might make the move that we've seen across other districts in the bay area. they're going to merge
5:07 am
schools to save some money. that's the proposal. good morning to you, marcus. yes. later this afternoon, the oakland unified school board will meet to consider this proposal to combine ten schools into five. this is to help reduce that district's budget deficit. all the schools are already located on shared campuses. so students would continue their normal classes. but administration could combine resources and staff. in a message to parents, superintendent kyla johnson gemmell. she claims the merger will reduce administrative costs while creating stronger programing. writing. quote, while these changes stem from budget challenges, our focus is on creating schools that would better serve our students, unquote. and she says, would benefit students in the long run. a teacher at unified for success academy disagrees. not looking at a significant savings to do this merger. but we are looking at, you know, traumatizing kids, getting them out of their comfort zone. the
5:08 am
things they've already grown accustomed to by coming to our school, our programs, even our after school program. the main thing is how do we save the quality of the education? that's my concern, so that we're just not making cuts and turning kids into these schools, into low performing. that was school board member george lerma, who represents district five, where the majority of the proposed school mergers are located. the area is also home to a large minority population, which some critics say is not coincidental. lerma believes school restructuring does need to happen, but says students success must be a priority. school board member lerma again tells us he does not anticipate layoffs, but says the administrators could be reassigned or moved to other locations. the school board again will meet on this today. they'll discuss it, and they're expected to vote on the proposed mergers in early december. reporting live, bob redell today

in the bay. parents don't like to hear about that merger, but it saves money. it kind of has to happen. all right, bob, thank you. 508 right now, leaders in the south bay plan to deliver an update on flooding prevention efforts. valley water says its partnership with santa clara county distributed 140,000 free sandbags last winter. this morning, the agency, along with the county, the city of san jos, plan to outline preparedness efforts. the national weather service is also set to discuss its winter forecast. a news conference, including interactive displays, takes place at 11:00 this morning at a sandbag distribution site on winfield boulevard in san jose. talking about rain this week. well, let's take a look outside. looking nice and clear there in san francisco this morning. this is over at the golden gate bridge. meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring what we can expect. weather wise today. and i know we had some rain earlier this week. more expected this week. what about today? we're already seeing those raindrops on the camera lens at the golden gate bridge. even though the heavier rain is still well to
5:10 am
the north of us, and we can see on the satellite and radar, we are not going to see some of the heavier rain until about late morning into the early afternoon, but temperatures are going to be on the cool side, only making it up to 55 in clear lake. 59 in napa, but where we see the rain moving in later today, there will be that chance that we can make it into the mid 60s with a high of 66 expected in palo alto, san jose, as well as concord. and tomorrow we're getting some spotty rain chances in the forecast while our temperatures will be well below what's normal even for this time of year. so we'll be tracking that. mike's been looking around to find find you some lower gas prices. yeah, it didn't have to look far. we have a new leader, but not a new lead city. look at the top. it still says livermore. today's is still the second best in the state. but now. 341. that one lowest price we have in the bay. this is at diamond gas and mart on south front road, north bay in solano county. it's suisun city with the low of 379 at 76 on walters road. and at the bottom here the

station has the same logo, but they call it a slightly different name in san jose diamond gas and market is 385 on south winchester boulevard. so there are some favorable changes out there. check gasbuddy.com for the latest. let's check some live cameras out here. and we see that dublin does show a good volume of traffic coming in. no major problems out of the altamont pass. a steady flow. things get a little easier once you pass north. flynn. another live look shows you oakland, where the east bay shows a smooth flow. green sensors right now. still too early for those brake taps in contra costa county. should kick in in the north bay highway 37 shortly. back to you guys. thanks, mike. did you see this? captain klay makes a comeback at chase center just ahead on today in the bay. the way the warriors celebrated their new rival. and highlights from the game and unleashing the doge. the tesla ceo elon musk to become part of the trump administration. you're watching part. you're

stalled a bit this morning as we wait for key inflation numbers. mortgage rates have jumped in the last couple of days. shares in san jose's zscaler down a bit, but really performing well. spirit airlines i think we're seeing a bankruptcy ahead for spirit airlines. if spirit does file for bankruptcy. it would wipe out current shareholders. you may recall spirit and frontier were in talks to merge. it didn't work out. and then jetblue got interested. but the
5:15 am
government stepped in to block that relationship. one of the people who's been the watchdog in the government for mergers and competition is lina khan. pardon me. she works for president biden at the ftc. obviously, she will be out of a job soon, but she's still watchdogging right now. and that's caught the attention of republicans who have written a letter telling her to wind it down. the new york times says the incoming trump administration will keep its promise, it says, and not block tiktok from operating in the united states, banning it. originally trump's idea, but he has since said banning tiktok would benefit mark zuckerberg and facebook, so he doesn't want to do that. we get key inflation numbers with the consumer price index today. inflation, if you've been paying attention nearly under control. but the american voter doesn't think that's true. it's been a big part of why harris lost. it seems she was seen as continuing biden's economic policies, much to the frustration of democrats. those policies were working near
5:16 am
low unemployment, growing gdp, falling inflation, and president elect trump has named tesla ceo elon musk and former political rival rival vivek ramaswamy to run the new department of government efficiency, which musk says will cut government spending by more than a third. now remember, musk gets tens of billions of dollars from the federal government to launch astronauts and satellites into space. he musk has said as much as $2 trillion. the discretionary budget is 1.7 trillion. so it's not just cutting. it's all of it. it's everything, you know, that the government does outside of social security and medicare and paying the debt. not cutting, but eliminating all of it. now do you take that seriously? i just don't know. right. well, once he gets into his new position, maybe we'll find out. reevaluate. yeah. let's hope. all right. thanks, scott. it is 516 right now. the countdown to

ahead on the today show. just at 7:00 this morning, right after today in the bay. and guess who got to watch an early screening. who is that? a very lucky marcus washington and velena jones. so we were all abuzz in the newsroom asking how it was. it was good. yeah, i actually enjoyed it. what are you wearing, a green tie. i know, just a little shout out to elphaba. but anyway, the thing about it is, it's long. just so you know, it's two hours and 40 minutes. i believe. it is long, but it is good. i mean, cinematography is good. the acting is good. i did notice that. and the singing. singing, the singing is good. even the people who you didn't expect, like you're like, oh, i didn't know they could sing, which they really can't. and they've said that publicly. not me. they've said it publicly. michelle yeoh i interviewed her, you know, we'll see that i think, next week. but they talked about it and they sing, but it's not like it's just like, oh, okay, i like this. okay. so it's good, i recommend it. i would see it again. okay. but you know, just make sure you take a nap before
5:19 am
you go. yeah, that's good to know. okay, so no friday showings for us. at least on this shift. we're dead by friday. well, trending this morning, a homecoming. living up to the hype. yeah. klay thompson returning last night over to chase center in the game. really had it all. three thom jensen. yeah you can imagine it was an emotional night all around there. that celebration for warriors legend klay thompson there. but you know what. once the game started splash brothers on both sides showed out. klay hit six three pointers scoring 22 points there. but down the stretch steph curry took control scoring ten straight points. and last three minutes there meant night night for the dallas mavericks there who lost the game 120 to 117. after the game, klay was clearly touched by the fans response. steph even talked about some mixed emotions. it was a really cool experience. i appreciate the fans very much. the captain's hat ended up being
5:20 am
a great touch because i'm such a passionate boater, and i saw a lot of familiar faces in the crowd and that was a warm hearted feeling. no matter what the soundbites were before the game leading up to it, we knew there would be a lot of emotions, but both teams wanted to win. now, even before the game started, klay first entering chase center last night, 400 arena employees lined the entrance way, all wearing hats honoring captain klay. those same hats were actually included in the fan giveaway, all giving him cheers there as he walked in. it was kind of emotional even seeing that part. i saw it online and i was like, wow, you know what that must feel like for him? yeah, it was nice to see how he had put on that exterior, that armor. but then when he got there, he did appear and he smiled, you know, and as a fan, two of the team, you know, we've seen them go through great wins and everything. but to see him not a part of that now. yeah. it was kind of like, oh man. but you
5:21 am
know, hey, he's still welcome here with open arms as long as we win. yeah. it worked out perfectly yesterday. exactly. welcome back. okay. now go home. all right. if you are sticking around in the bay area, what are we going to expect? well, a little bit of rain off and on. it's going to be a mixed bag of weather. it may be sunny. it may all of a sudden start raining, and then it's back to the sunshine a few minutes later. so here is a look at what to expect. those rain chances continue from today through friday, and then there will be some snowy cierra travel, with some of that snow dropping down to elevations above 7000ft. and then we also have issues with the king tides returning starting tomorrow and continuing through sunday, and that may cause some localized flooding. some of those low lying areas that do flood during king tides will have to be monitored very closely. look at how cool it is now in walnut creek we're down to 42 degrees. it is 45 in palo alto and 47 in san jose. and in san francisco. this as rain comes in. so that's going to keep those temperatures down today. and we're going to see at times some spotty showers, some
5:22 am
of the heavier rain staying to the north. and at least for the south bay, it's going to be nice and mild for the afternoon. but becoming mostly cloudy, with a high of 64 in cupertino and 66 in morgan hill will also see a lot of some of those mid 60s in the east bay pleasanton today, 65 and 63 in redwood city and in san mateo, san francisco, up to 64, in the mission district, while the marina district will be in the upper 50s and for the north bay, it will be right at about 60 degrees for most areas. now we start to see that rain coming in right at about noon for much of the north bay. some light showers that will be hit or miss and then spreading across the peninsula into the east bay by 2:00 and just starting to approach san jose for the early afternoon. a lot of that rain falling apart for some of the valleys, but for the most part, the north bay will have the highest chance of seeing some more of the measurable rain that could top about a 10th of an inch of rain for today. but over the next couple of days, we're only
5:23 am
looking at a few hundredths of an inch of rain for much of the rest of the bay area. then, going through the forecast, we're looking at some spotty showers in our forecast for sunday, mainly late in the evening, but our weekend is looking pretty nice. it just will be cool with highs in the low 60s, and san francisco will see a little bit more in the way of some of the wet weather today, but a bit of a break for the next couple of days. mike, you've been watching the roads. any issues popping up this early in the south bay? kari folks leaving us, the south bay north 880, the top of the screen right around the 238. 237 junction leaving itas. word of a gravel spill that happened early this morning. still in your left lane. so watch for the activity. watch for the crews. use caution. it's light traffic. you can still head north out of milpitas and in toward the fremont area, but we will use that caution. surface street crash not effecting the interchange for two 8017. everything is moving smoothly in the south bay. still early for that first slowdown we expect right here around oakland road
5:24 am
for san jose. let's get a live look outside. a pretty light traffic for the rest of the bay as things just start to get going on here on the morning commute, the golden gate bridge, the fog is not there. this morning we are looking at a smooth flow of traffic, a lot of flow coming from the north bay with those headlights. no cones in the bottom of the screen her. back to you guys. thank you mike. 523 this morning coming up next here on today in the bay nbc bay area responds leaked info can turn your life and bank accounts upside down. but when your data is hacked, our company is waiting too long to tell you. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. we investigate and we'll show you se uncommon steps toom

calls to step down following a scathing 400 page report, city leaders are urging the san mateo county sheriff, christina corpuz, to resign. we're live with details on the accusations she's facing in the way she's responding. also cracking down on prostitution and human trafficking. the new program san francisco police department is putting forward to stop the growing trend. plus, tracking more rain. meteorologist kari hall timing out when we can see more wet weather this week and the return of high tides. this is today in the bay. and this is also wednesday morning, halfway through that workweek. 530 right now. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. let's get over to meteorologist kari hall. she's been monitoring what we can expect weather wise. and we've been talking about rain. kari say it's already here in some parts. yeah, it's a light rain that we're seeing near the coast and in parts of the north bay.
5:32 am
but the rest of the bay area is so far dry as you're heading out the door, we are taking a look at what to expect with some scattered showers from today through friday, but the best rain chances today will be in the north bay, and it may be a little breezy at times. we've been tracking the high surf near the coast and 12 to 15 foot waves, even though within the next 30 minutes we are going to see that high surf advisory expiring, it still may be very dangerous there along the coastline in the sierra, there will be snow above 7000ft. as this storm system approaches, and it will be coming in later today. with those rain chances increasing and temperatures staying down. so we're only up to 55 for a high today in clear lake. while in san jose we'll see a high of 66 degrees. we'll go hour by hour with that forecast and talk more about the return of king tides that's coming up in the next microclimate forecast. laura. sounds great. we'll check back with you. 532 right now, this morning, calls are growing for the san mateo county sheriff to resign a 400 page independent
5:33 am
report lays out what it calls an administration of conflicts of interest and abuse of authority. today, in the bay's kris sanchez joins us from redwood city live this morning. so what is the sheriff say about all this, chris? well, as you might imagine, laura, the sheriff rebuts this 400 page report says she was elected by the people. and so she is not going to step down. this is despite that call from the deputy sheriff that served under her, and also from some of the board of supervisors who want the sheriff, christina corpus, to step down. just one part of that independent investigation reads, quote, lies secrecy, intimidation, retaliation, conflicts of interest and abuse of authority are the hallmarks of the corpus administration. the sheriff also is accused of having a personal and inappropriate relationship with her chief of staff. reports of racial and homophobic slurs
5:34 am
were also found to be credible by the author of the report that author is ladoris cordell, a retired santa clara county judge who was also a former independent police auditor for the san jose police department. now judge cordell's recommendation that sheriff corpus stepped down. but the sheriff says she's not going to. i've been dealing with this kind of rhetoric my entire career. i am a woman of color that has gone up the ranks in a male dominated field. just yesterday, one of the sheriff's chief critics was arrested for alleged theft. that investigation is ongoing, but he is the president of the san mateo county deputy sheriffs association. he says this arrest is more evidence of that retaliation. i will not be intimidated by our sheriff. i will not tolerate the sheriff's abuse of our authority and retaliation against our union.
5:35 am
now, the special meeting is at 4:00 this afternoon. that's for the supervisors. but before that, the san mateo county deputy sheriffs and the sheriff's sergeants association will hold a press conference. the board of supervisors will forward this independent report to the san mateo county district attorney's office, as well as the california attorney general and the san mateo county civil grand jury. and the board says that they are preparing to request an ordinance that would change the county charter and allow the supervisors to remove sheriff corpus if she doesn't step down. and there is cause in redwood city. kris sanchez today in the bay. all right. a lot of angles to it. thank you very much, chris. well, starting this week, the defense is presenting its case in the murder trial surrounding the death of tech ceo bob lee. lee died after being stabbed in san francisco in april of last year. among those taking the stand yesterday, a friend of the
5:36 am
defendant, nima momeni, who claims that he wanted to take legal action and sue lee and a mutual acquaintance. she also confirmed that he sent her a text about that suit two days after lee's death, and before authorities arrested him, which raises an issue for one legal expert. what is curious about this text exchange is that we now know that mr. nima momeni killed bob lee. his story is it was in self-defense. the prosecution said it was premeditated murder, but absent from this text exchange is any mention of what happened between zenni and bob lee. and i think the prosecution is going to say this is someone who is a killer, a former medical examiner also testified as an expert for the defense, claiming self-defense may be a plausible motive as promised, san francisco police are taking an assertive new step in cracking down on prostitution and human trafficking. here's
5:37 am
how. straight from chief bill scott. consider this a warning effective immediately, the sfpd has a website where community members can submit pictures and information to report prostitution activities. as the new department video goes on to explain, concerned citizens can send in photos and license grabs which, once verified, allow police to send what the department calls dear john letters to the homes where those vehicles are registered. the chief is optimistic that it will serve as a deterrent, especially for johns with families for now, it focuses on a specific area surrounding shotwell avenue in the mission. the mayor's office first unveiled the plan in august as part of a series of initiatives following a series of community meetings. 536 this morning at stanford, graduate workers have reached a new contract deal in the process averting a strike. talks gained momentum this week as the union threatened to walk off the job. late last night on social media, the union posted word of a
5:38 am
tentative agreement. leaders plan to release more details later this morning. if you're driving anywhere along low lying coastal areas over the next few days, be aware of the return of king tides. this is video from a previous round along san francisco's embarcadero. minor flooding in areas of marin often include spots like lucky drive and green bay. the redwood highway and manzanita parkway and ride near tam junction. meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring the very latest with these king tides. yeah, we could see that was at pacifica, where we saw those big waves yesterday. but we'll have to watch these areas shaded in green for that minor coastal flooding. those low lying areas and some of the tributaries in those areas where we do see the tides rising up a little bit higher, that starts tomorrow morning at 7 a.m. and continues through sunday. so we're getting to that time of year as we get into the fall and the winter, when the moon is closest to the earth, called perihelion. and
5:39 am
it's also has a greater gravitational pull as it creates those waves coming farther inland. and this time of year, we see, even with the high tides and the king tides, that causes some coastal flooding in low lying areas. but we also have water pushing up along our coastline as the storm system arrives. we are seeing some of the rain developing now just to our north, and continuing to make its way closer to the bay area, and it's going to keep those temperatures down for the north bay. highs near 60 degrees, while in parts of the south bay, where the rain takes a little bit longer to get there, we're still headed for the mid 60s for today, so we'll time out that rain. mike, you are seeing a backup now at the bay bridge starting to form right on schedule, so no big deal. getting over the water right here. i'll show you the map. you guys just talked about those king tides. and as is tradition, the lower manzanita park and ride will be closed starting today for the next few days. because of those tides coming up. typical flooding expected on the lower lot over there. no surprises. also in san francisco, first and essex on

the eastbound 80 that on those two onramps for the bay bridge lower deck. same thing as last night. they'll be closed from midnight to about 4 a.m. the next day. tomorrow we're looking at the traffic flow, though. right now there's a new incident over near the carquinez bridge, and i'll get details from chp, but i do see some slowing. looks like it may be westbound right around 780 again. we'll double check that. highway four shows a typical build coming into concord out of pittsburgh and bay point. tri-valley looks great this early crash is over on the shoulder, maybe sticking into the slow lane as you exit the altamont pass. no extra time shows up on our travel times, though. coming through livermore in the south bay. you have the start for that slowing for north 101. you saw that through san jose. pretty typical. but also we still have this activity in the slow lanes. north 880 at 237, a gravel spill traffic still light in the northbound direction, so everything is still moving smoothly. watch for those crews back to you. good to know. thanks, mike. 540 this morning, putting his love for san francisco on film ahead for you. this morning, we're going to highlight one asian american

this is just the latest sign that trump has beat the charges against him. yeah, i think that's right. the federal charges anyway. right. because trump accused of taking and sharing classified documents. and in a separate federal court accused of meddling in american elections, those were supposed to go to trial. but the justice department policy prohibits the prosecution of a sitting president. so smith, this morning and his team as well, left with nowhere to go. so this is at once really big news and also really expected news. there's no other option for smith now. trump still on the hook for millions. he owes after he was found liable of sexual assault in new york. he still faces sentencing in his fraud trial. the georgia case is not federal. there's no legal restriction on that going forward, though. that's always been the weakest case. incoming president trump will meet with current president biden at the white house today. it's a long tradition dating back to the

early 1900s. now, this is the most recent video we have of such a meeting because trump did not do this for biden. this is the obamas welcoming the trumps. we understand melania trump might not join the president elect today. lots of new names to learn this morning as trump announces more offices that he wants to fill. elon musk and vivek ramaswamy will run the yet to be invented department of government efficiency. john ratcliffe nominated to run the cia. he used to be the director of national intelligence. make a make a mental note of him. kristi noem will run homeland security. she's the current governor of south dakota. pete hegseth is a tv anchor. he will run the defense department. he's an iraq war veteran. you know, mike huckabee, the former governor of arkansas. he will be ambassador to israel. now, this is all assuming that the senate approves them. that is an important part of the checks and balances, but important detail. trump wants the new senate

majority leader, whoever that is. they vote on that today to allow him to make recess appointments. now, technically, the president already has the constitutional authority to make temporary appointments when the senate is not in session. but the senate found a loophole where it never goes into recess. and it's been using that loophole for years, and trump wants them to knock it off. now, you might ask yourself, hold on. the senate's going to be republican controlled. why would trump need the power to appoint people without approval? if the approval process is run by his own party? well, you remember john ratcliffe, the first time trump nominated him to be the director of national intelligence? republicans. republicans said no. they were so worried ratcliffe would politicize american intelligenc. so it's entirely possible not every candidate trump will want to put into government will meet with his own party's approval, and he wants the power to get

around that. all right. we can end on something lighthearted. the american bald eagle, long a symbol of our country. the house may vote as soon as today to make the bald eagle our national bird, which it isn't. we have a national anthem. star spangled banner. obviously, we have a national flag. the stars and stripes. we have a national motto. we even have a national flower and tree. it's the rose and the oak tree. but somehow we never got around. laura. to the bald eagle. that's interesting, because he's so symbolic. right, right. you would think. yeah. okay. good to know. happening today in oakland, leaders will mark one year since establishing an official lgbtq neighborhood. city leaders joined community members last november to establish the lakeshore lgbtq cultural district. the hope is it will turn into a destination area similar to what the castro is for san francisco. at noon today, organizers plan to hold a flag raising ceremony. ahead, in our 8:00 streaming newscast. event organizers will join us

live to talk about today's event. a local san francisco artist brings his city love letter to life. this is in a new visual art project screening this weekend. the work is called playing in fog. multimedia artist and musician dan lee created it and shot the videos all on his iphone. the piece celebrates music and art in a series of six thematically connected songs. lee says the work depicts his family's bittersweet journey, starting a new life in the bay area. saturday's event moderator calls it a story that will resonate with members of the asian american community and beyond. it was kind of a full circle moment because i was basically living where they had had their first apartment together. and so when i got i got a grant from the san francisco arts commission to make this project about the city. and the first song i wrote was called december 68th, and it was all about my mom's first day in the city. there's something unique about the creative spirit that draws

people to san francisco. that's really part of the city. its heritage and hopefully its future. saturday's screening event takes place at the four star theater in san francisco's richmond district. it will include a discussion on the artistic representation of asian americans at both the mainstream and community driven levels. well, happening tonight in san francisco, the return of a holiday favorite in the heart of union square. you're looking at video of last year's tree lighting. this year's event gets underway at 6 p.m, with mayor london breed among those taking part. in case you're wondering, santa is still in overdrive. this is at the north pole right now. as a result, he won't start hosting at union square with those visits until november 29th. he's got to keep track of all those elves. you know, i got to gear up here. a lot to do happening today in san francisco. ballpark back nine is back at oracle park. that means you can take your golf swings with some of the city's most

majestic views as your backdrop. not bad. not bad at all. today, in the bay's ginger carter hermosa beach live for us over at oracle this morning, you said not bad at all, laura. but, ginger, that swing you had a little bit earlier. it wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great. i know, i know. well, there were two i don't know, i think. i don't know if it even made it that second one, but i think it did. it sounded like it did. i'm going to give it one more whack here. i don't think laura's going to be too proud of this swing, but i'm going to try. i was told a slow and easy. okay. all right. we'll get that later. all right. at least we don't have to go far from that. listen, whatever your skill level is when it comes to playing golf, there is something for you. with ballpark back nine and you have five days to work on it. so i've got a lot of work to do here. we're going to talk to vice president of giants enterprises, joey nevin, our good friend joey here. joey, good morning to you. you guys are back. this is one of the fan favorites. i can see why, because it's a lot of fun, even
5:52 am
if you're not that great. but last year you had thousands of people expecting 5000 people this year. yeah, yeah. ginger, we are excited. and yes, we will continue to work on that swing we had. we sold out last year and we are thrilled to be back again for our third year. and anticipating another sellout or five days this year. so wednesday to sunday, expecting hopefully around 5000 people and excited to experience what we think is the coolest and most unique nine hole golf course in the country. well, we're at hole four. you've got a beautiful view. i know the sun isn't up yet, but it just gets it, gets even better as the morning continues here. there are new things that you guys are offering because of course you got to keep those thousands of people challenged and refreshed. yeah, yeah, try to keep things fresh. and this year we are starting hole one right by the giants bullpen in the 415 platform. you'll be hitting right onto the field. and then you'll actually go kind of reverse order this year throughout the ballpark. and we're here on hole number four right in the view level behind home plate. and then people are
5:53 am
really excited again about hole eight. so you're hitting from from the giants dugout. you get to spend time inside the dugout. we'll have some refreshments there. you'll be walking along the warning track. so what we've heard is people enjoy, you know getting to see other parts of the ballpark. they don't usually get to hang out in and really get a unique vantage point down to the field and also get to play some golf. i mean, talk about the unique vantage point we're going to see a little bit more as the sun does come up. we're going to go to sf giants.com/golf. for more details on tickets and the different levels. we're going to chat more in the next hour on that as well. but guys when the sun does come up, we'll see the number 24. that is to honor willie mays. say, hey kid, this is there's plenty of golf here. but at the end of the day, it's a ballpark. it's all about the giants. it's a ballpark. and we think the intersection of golf and baseball right here at 24, willie mays plaza and thrilled to honor the greatest baseball player of all time, willie mays.
5:54 am
number 24 is etched in mode into the center field. and he was a great fan of golf. and we'd love to honor and pay tribute to him. and all right, this one's for him. i think i feel that spirit. there you go. there you go. hey, kids. hey, kids. say. hey, kid. he's. he's he's smiling. i think we might have made him smile. guys, it is definitely so nice finish. right. that was great. ginger. we'll see if we can get some golf balls in mccovey cove. yeah, maybe ginger won't be able to. someone will go up a couple clubs. yeah, she's going to have to. all right, let's talk about the weather in san francisco. if you're going out there today, going to enjoy some of the many events going on around the city. well, we are starting out with some dry weather conditions for now. and it's also chilly. we're in the upper 40s. as you're heading out the door. as we go throughout the day, we're going to see more clouds coming in and rain developing as we go toward late morning into the afternoon at noon. it's definitely raining there. we're seeing this weather
5:55 am
system dropping in. it's going to bring in those showers and possibly some gusty winds at times. and a lot of the heavier rain is moving into the coast up around eureka and crescent city. much of that rain is going to be falling apart before it gets here. so we're going to see temperatures today. definitely cooler than normal. only in the upper 50s, low 60s, 64, though for fremont and 66 in san jose. so back to some of the same temperatures. we had yesterday and tomorrow. just a touch lower as we are still going to need the jackets and umbrellas at times, and we're going to see the rain developing in the north bay first, and then pushing across the rest of the bay area by 5 to 6:00. we're seeing the rain in the south bay and then then just some lingering showers for the north bay through tomorrow morning and possibly into the afternoon. most of us are not going to see a lot of wet weather here, and if you do, it's going to be very light with the possibility between now and friday a few hundredths of an inch of rainfall. so that's not a lot at all. and the cierra is
5:56 am
going to see about 2 to 4in of snow, possibly up to five inches for some of those upper elevations. so that could make travel to the sierra very slippery between now and friday. otherwise, we're looking at a mix of sun and clouds and temperatures. on the cool side are mornings are going to be very chilly. saturday morning will wake up to those lows in the mid 30s and looking at highs only headed for the low 60s and it will be cool as well in san francisco. back to you. all right. thanks, gary. well happening now oakland leaders are expanding the ban on smoking to include vaping in public spaces. yesterday, council members approved that new ordinance, which previously only covered tobacco products. but they're still trying to finalize certain details on the new ban, including whether cannabis products should be exempt. also, whether the ban should extend to private dwellings where there's shared public space like apartments and condos. the final vote is scheduled for december 3rd. bay area schools getting
