position of power. his motorcade departing mar-a-lago early this morning. we're live in washington, breaking down the high stakes meeting between him and president biden. we have thrown a lot of money at problems without solving the problem. some major changes, possibly in the works for oakland schools. the new proposed plan to help the district's dire budget and the impact it will have on hundreds of students. plus, another round of rain set to hit the bay area this morning. meteorologist kari hall tracking how long the wet weather will stick around. this is today in the bay. good wednesday morning to you. 6:00
6:01 am
right now. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. we'll have a look at that commute with mike coming up in just a bit, but first let's talk about that forecast. meteorologist kari hall tracking that incoming rain. right now, we're starting out with a beautiful, clear sky over the south bay. but then we have this headed closer to the bay area. this approaching atmospheric river and storm system that will continue to weaken as it moves into the north bay. and we're not expecting this to have a huge impact on us as we see a lot of the heavier rain to our north, some lighter showers moving in for the bay area, and rain chances will be off and on from today all the way through friday, but the cierra will have more of an impact with snow levels dropping down to about 7000ft. and then we'll also see the return of king tides. those are the higher than normal astronomical tides that we get sometimes during the fall and winter. we're going to see highs in the upper 50s, low 60s for the north bay, mid 60s from san francisco to the east bay down
6:02 am
to the south bay, and then the rain advancing from to north south from late morning into the afternoon. we'll talk more about that timeline coming up. but mike, now you're seeing some news flowing near the macarthur maze. right. so the volume built up over here at the toll plaza. we have all lanes filled indicating how much in this region, how much traffic flow is going on. coming off the east shore freeway and out of the maze, coming into the maze, we have a new crash westbound 580 at 24. you see some slowing. there's activity. we don't know how long we're going to have any lane impact. right now, it sounds like one lane might be impacted near the transition. we'll track that because the volume is building now out of this part of contra costa county coming in. notice all the folks coming off the carquinez bridge, upper east shore freeway and of course the feed off highway four through concord, pleasant hill, walnut creek interchange looks great. 680 south through the corridor down in toward the tri-valley. no problems here. south bay easing up from the first burst of traffic. the second one will come about 645. back to you. all right. sounds good. thanks, mike. 602 right now we continue to follow
6:03 am
breaking news surrounding the transition of president elect donald trump's return to the white house. special counsel jack smith and his team plan to resign before trump takes office. his office was evaluating the best path for winding down its work on two outstanding federal criminal cases against trump. the justice department's long standing position is that it cannot charge a sitting president with a crime. our scott mcgrew is diving deeper into what it all means. he'll join us with a closer look coming up at 645. in the meantime, president elect trump will meet with president biden at the white house later today. with the senate shifting to republican control, the house is now appears poised to do the same. trump will have an easier path for his agenda, given the republican legislative die that's now cast. today, in the bay's brie jackson joins us live from washington this morning. and bree, it is a tradition, but not really a requirement for presidents to invite the president elect to the white house. that's right. good morning. laura. so president biden and president elect trump will discuss a peaceful transfer
6:04 am
of power when he visits the white house later today. the meeting is a tradition mr. trump refused to uphold after losing the 2020 election. president elect trump returning to the white house at the invitation of president biden. his visit comes as the gop eyes control of washington. there's a lot of excitement, a lot of energy her. we're really grateful for president trump leaving it all on the field to get reelected. mr. trump is already filling key roles in his administration, among them announcing former arkansas governor mike huckabee as his pick for ambassador to israel. also naming tech billionaire elon musk and conservative vivek ramaswamy to head up a new department of government efficiency. your money is being wasted and the department of government efficiency is going to fix that. as the president elect focuses on building his new team, republicans are gearing up to
6:05 am
elect a new senate majority leader, mitch mcconnell announced he would be stepping down earlier this year. i'm so happy that all of our new members are here to create that majority and give us a chance to make the kind of changes for america that the voters voted for. some of the newest members of congress voted in, arrived on capitol hill for orientation, including senator elect andy kim, a democrat from new jersey. i see just how much people were just feeling really unsettled about their lives, just feeling like, you know, government right now is not tackling things in any meaningful way, you know, in terms of their day to day living. democrats reassessing after 2024 election losses. president elect trump looking ahead to inauguration day in january 2025 and president elect trump says he will pick kristi noem for homeland security secretary. she's been a supporter of mr. trump's hard
6:06 am
line immigration policies. back to you. and brie, we saw melania trump in some video there. she was invited as well to the white house today to sit down with first lady jill biden. but i understand that's not happening. yeah. melania trump is not expected to be at the white house today. cnn is citing sources familiar with the matter that this is all due to a scheduling conflict following melania's recently released memoir. now, the first lady extended the traditional invitation last week, a symbolic gesture amid the transition of power in washington. cnn has reached out to the east wing for a comment, but so far they have not, responded. laura. i guess she's familiar with the white house and she'll be there soon enough. brie, thanks for the latest. well, with the results still not official just yet, leaders in alameda county are undoubtedly starting to consider what should come next inside the district attorney's office with a recall election still hanging
6:07 am
in the balance, voters appear to have spoken decisively in the measure to recall district attorney pamela price, but she has not yet conceded restructuring the d.a. office seems all but certain, and it will start with the price. with price leaving office once the recall is certified, which would happen december 5th. supervisors would then appoint an interim to fill out their term. you may recall san francisco da brooke jenkins came in as an interim following chesa boudin recall back in 2022. raj mathai spoke with jenkins last night about some of the challenges ahead. it is not easy to come in and to try to one make the changes that are necessary to move the office forward, but it's going to be difficult when you've got two different camps. the people who who. pamired versus the people who were there before. and so you've got to figure out a way to do this in a fashion that unites the troops so that we're all working towards the same mission. but it's a one day
6:08 am
at a time struggle until you get there. jenkins also believes the interim may come from within. that's because they would already have familiarity with how things work there. a key component is keeping things running smoothly during that transition. later today, parents in oakland could have a better sense of the fate of their child's school as the district faces a budget deficit. today, in the bay's bob redell joining us live now and bob unified oakland unified that is might make that move that we've seen in other districts as they're trying to figure out some things because their budgets are just not there to support it. correct. good morning to marcus and laura. so later today, oakland unified school board, they're going to meet just to talk about to consider this proposal to combine ten of their schools within oakland unified into five to help reduce the district's budget gap. all the schools are already located on shared campuses, so students would continue their normal classes. but the administration could combine resources and staff. in a message to parents,
6:09 am
superintendent kyla johnson, gemmell claims the merger would reduce administrative costs while creating stronger programing. she says, quote, while these changes stem from budget challenges, our focus is on creating schools that would better serve our students, unquote. and she says it would benefit students in the long run. a teacher at united for success academy disagrees. not looking at a significant savings to do this merger. but we are looking at, you know, traumatizing kids, getting them out of their comfort zone, the things they've already grown accustomed to by coming to our school, our programs, even our after school program. the main thing is, how do we save the quality of the education? that's my concern, so that we're just not making cuts and turning kids into these schools, into low performing. that was school board member george lerma, who represents district five, where the majority of the proposed
6:10 am
school mergers are located. the area is also home to a large minority population, which some critics say is not coincidental. lerma doesn't anticipate layoffs, but says administrators could be reassigned or moved to other locations. the school board again, they'll meet today to consider the proposal, expected to vote on it in early december. reporting live bob redell. today in the bay. all right. we'll see where it goes from here. thank you. bob. well, in the south bay. vector control crews are spraying for mosquitoes known to transmit deadly diseases. ecologists say that the aedes aegypti species of the insect like human blood and bite during the day. they are also known to transmit diseases like yellow fever. right now, crews are focusing on neighborhoods in the 95051 zip code in santa clara. spraying was scheduled to get underway about 30 minutes ago. vector control says that a total of 172 of the invasive insects have been found in the city. well, let's take a live look for you
6:11 am
outside this morning over at the golden gate bridge. meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect. weather wise. the ground there looks pretty dry. kari. but you said that rain heading our way. yeah, we could see a little bit of the raindrops on the lens there. and looking at this live view at palo alto. beautiful sunrise this morning as we are seeing the drier conditions there. but as we go through the next several hours, we'll eventually start to see more clouds and some rain by late morning into the afternoon. it is a chilly start. we're only at 41 now in walnut creek while san francisco is in the upper 40s. we're also at 47 degrees in san jose, and the rain moving into the north bay will start to hit around noon into the early afternoon for san francisco. here we are at 3:00. we're seeing it approaching oakland and concord, and then moving into the parts of the east bay by 5:00, but may skip around some parts of the bay area, so i'll be tracking that for you. mike's been looking around to find you some lower gas prices, and we have a new leader, not a
6:12 am
new lead city that's still livermore, but the lead spot is the second best in the state. once again taking over that spot from across town. 341 now at dimond gas and mart on south front road. actually, it's not across town. it's just a short ways away. we're looking at the north bay in solano county for their best. that's in suisun city with the low three. 79 at 76 on walters road in the middle here. and the same logo as the first shot, but it's in san jose where they call it diamond gas and market. that's on three. it's at 385 on south winchester boulevard. check those names to clarify them or check those price changes at gasbuddy.com. on the roadways. not a lot of change. i mean, it's our typical commute. pretty normal pattern. however, there is still this crash. i learned this two car crash. no major injuries, but it's in the middle lanes westbound 580 approaching the 24 interchange. that's prior to the maze, causing some more slowing. caldecott tunnels just fine, picking up the volume out of walnut creek. the volume builds there, as well as the upper east shore and now out of richmond. back to you. thanks so much,
6:13 am
mike. well, captain clay makes a comeback over at chase center. he's back. oh, yeah. so next we have that special celebration from the warriors to their new but very familiar rival. and unleash the doge. elon musk gets his position inside the trump administration out to the futures this morning. we're waiting on very important inflation numbers. so i don't think we'll see much change. in fact you see unchanged right there. plus the sexiest man alive has been crowned this morning. and somehow it is not marcus or scott or mike, not even bob redell. how is that possible? well, we're going to show you the paper salesman who did make the cut when we return. you're watching today in the ba.
6:14 am
6:15 am
6:16 am
this morning as we wait for key inflation numbers. mortgage rates jumped in the last couple of days. reuters reporting this morning that apple is about to unveil a wall mounted touchscreen that will control your home and act as a calendar. that kind of thing. spirit airlines i think we're pretty close to bankruptcy here on spirit airlines. if spirit does file for bankruptcy. it would wipe out current shareholders. you may recall spirit and frontier were in talks to merge.
6:17 am
it didn't work out. then jetblue got interested, but the government stepped in to block that relationship. one of the people who have been the watchdog in the government for mergers and competition is lina khan. she works for the president at the ftc, and obviously she will be out of a job soon. but she's still watchdogging right now, and that's caught the attention of republicans who have written her a letter telling her to wind it down. the new york times says the incoming trump administration says it will keep promises and not block tiktok from operating in the united states. now, banning it was originally trump's idea, but he has since said banning tiktok would benefit mark zuckerberg and facebook, so he doesn't want to do that. we get key inflation numbers today with the consumer price index, inflation very nearly under control, which makes guessing what the fed is going to do at its next meeting. extra mysterious. and president elect trump has named tesla ceo and elon musk and former
6:18 am
political rival vivek ramaswamy to run the new department of government efficiency, which musk says will cut government spending by more than a third. a reminder musk gets tens of billions of dollars from the federal government to launch their astronauts and satellites into space. now, musk has discussed cutting $2 trillion from the budget, which is more than all discretionary spending. and that leads to a central conundrum when we talk about trump and musk, how much of what they say do you take seriously? even the name d o g e is a nod to a satirical crypto coin named after a dog, but they say they are serious. and if musk is serious, those cuts would cover every cent outside social security and medicare and interest payments on the debt. that is every meat inspector, every air traffic controller and park ranger and fbi agent and aircraft carrier, you name it. now, presumably he will not do that. but again, what they're
6:19 am
saying, they say they mean, they say they mean it. and then how do you report on that? if you think to yourself, well, that can't physically be possible, right. the numbers don't add up. they don't add up. i guess we'll see when they get in there. we will see. all right. thanks, scott. all right. well, homecoming, living up to the hype last night. klay thompson returning to chase center. and it's a game that really had all the emotion. three thompson. the night started there with that emotional celebration for the warriors legend. but you know what. once the game started the splash brothers on both sides showing out. klay hit six three pointers and scored 22 points. but you know what. down the stretch steph took control scoring ten straight points. a last minute three last night meant you know what it meant right here. night night. yeah dallas yeah losing the game there. 120 to 117. putting them to bed. well training for you
6:20 am
this morning. something to talk about. people magazine is out with its sexiest man alive for 2024. and let's just say bears, beets. battlestar galactica, it's jim from the office. actor and director john krasinski. krasinski makes his magazine's top spot here. in recent years. he's probably best been known for directing the horror franchise. a quiet place. in addition to his long list of hollywood accolades, he's also married to oscar nominated actress emily blunt. here's how he says she reacted to the news. she was very excited. there was a lot of joy involved, but i do think it's gonna make me do more household chores. but i'm willing to take the cons with the pros, to be honest with you. i think after the cover comes out, she'll be like, all right, that means you're gonna really earn it here at home. my brothers will probably wonder how this is possible for years to come. and luckily, we'll go right into thanksgiving so we can just jump right in and talk about it right away. that'll be
6:21 am
a fun dinner table, right? he says blunt has even joked about wallpapering the house in with the cover. if he was ever to receive the honor. so now he has. so maybe it will happen. congratulations, tim. but you know what? i'm just upset. i don't understand how mike didn't make it. oh, yeah. mike, i mean, i keep trying to break into the system, but my code brie not quite good. maybe next year i'll get next year. we got this. someone in this building is going to win. this worked out? yeah. m or m call our art house. oh, there we go. shop there. then we can wallpaper this work on your pose we're going to get to whether. there it is. there it is. well we do have a beautiful sunrise looking outside this morning. and we can expect some rain to come in. so over the next few hours, it's going to become mostly cloudy and spotty rain. from today through friday, the best chance will be in the north bay and it may be a little breezy at times. once that rain arrives and along the coast, the surf is still pretty dangerous. the high surf
6:22 am
could reach about 12 to 15 foot waves, and the sierra snow is going to drop down to about 7000ft. as we see this system arriving, it is continuing to weaken, so it's not going to have a significant impact on the bay area, but just bring a little bit of some wet weather and snow to those higher elevations with some bouts of heavy rain between eureka and crescent city. well, we're starting out with a beautiful sunrise this morning, and in dublin we're going to see those clouds rolling in. i'm not expecting a lot of rain here, but it will be mostly cloudy. you may get some spotty sprinkles. the more measurable rain is reserved for the north bay where we are seeing that arriving right at about noon. and here we are at 3:00, and we're seeing some of the rain moving from the north bay into the peninsula, as well as the east bay, and off and on showers. but notice how san jose is really not expecting a whole lot here, and even into the day tomorrow. partly to mostly cloudy with some ongoing spotty showers in the north bay through friday. so looking at how much rain the models are putting down
6:23 am
for us and it's really in a lot of spots. not enough to turn off the sprinklers just yet, as we are going to see a few hundredths of an inch of rain from mill valley on southward. there could be possibly a little more than a 10th of an inch of rain for parts of the north bay. our highs are still cooler than normal with the topping out at 67 in east san jose and 66 in los gatos. parts of the east bay in the mid 60s, walnut creek, as well as pleasanton, looking at a high today of 65 degrees near the coast, it's 60 and half moon bay and 63 in redwood city in san francisco, we have low 60s expected for downtown as well as novato and 60 in sonoma. looking at our forecast, expect it to be a mix of sun and clouds over the next few days. cool temperatures continuing. we will see another cold front dropping down on friday, and then once that clears, our morning lows will be even colder with some mid 30s expected, maybe some frosty areas and some of the inland
6:24 am
valleys. and san francisco will see partly to mostly cloudy skies. you may need the umbrella every now and then, but we're looking at a mainly dry weekend for saturday. but sunday rain returns late and mike is going to give us a peek at the commuters leaving richmond. yeah, we have quite a few here. look at that beautiful silhouette of those trees. the sun coming up here. yeah, we have volume building off the east shore freeway. no big surprises as we take a look out there. we do have a smooth flow as folks are moving through the area. we are. oh, i'm sorry, cynthia, can you help me out with the maps over there? i brought the wrong clicker over. we're kind of changing equipment, but as we take a look at this beautiful shot, folks are leaving out of richmond. and there is the build over at the richmond bridge. a smooth flow of traffic as you get over to the area, you see that there slowing on the approach. thank you. so much. we're looking down the east shore freeway. let's get to the next map where we show you the big slowing that's going on here for west 580. now a lot more traffic slowing down. i believe those two cars in the middle of the lane there may be
6:25 am
crews there to assist them. so there may actually only be one lane getting by. that should clear up, but we'll track this over the next few minutes. the rest of the bay pretty standard. back to you. teamwork makes the dream work. cinthia pimentel, behind the scenes coming up next on today in the bay nbc bay area response leaked info can turn your life and bank accounts upside down, but when your data is hacked, our company is waiting too long to tell you i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. we investigate and we'll show you some uncommon steps to protect yourself

all of this county that represents change right now at 630, fighting back calls to resign. the san mateo county sheriff responds after the release of a scathing 400 page report. we're live. with the new steps being taken in a matter of hours by peninsula leaders. president elect trump just landed in washington, dc. he's
6:32 am
headed to the white house for his meeting with president biden. plus, king tides returning. and we're going to break down the impact on low lying coastal areas. this is today in the bay. good morning to you. on this wednesday. thanks for allowing us to be a part of your morning. i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. let's get a look at the forecast because that rain is going to be trickling in again. are we going to see it? bay area wide. it's going to mostly be in the north bay. so i think that's the place or the area that will have the best chance of seeing the rain. but take a look at this sunrise this morning. if you're not seeing all of those bright colors coming through the blinds, just yet, maybe look out the window and see if you can see this kind of view like we're seeing over dublin with a lot of oranges and pinks in the sky. you can see the fog settling into the valley, and this is all ahead of this storm system that will bring us some rain later. this morning into the early afternoon. the rain is pretty heavy up around crescent city,
6:33 am
but the system is weakening and by the time it makes it to santa rosa around 10:00, we're expecting only some scattered showers and it's going to be off and on. but once again, the north bay will see the highest chance of more measurable rain. a lot of the rain falling apart as it moves in, so if you haven't done so already, make sure you download our nbc bay area news app and then you can track the weather, even zoom in to your location. it's free in the app store for your smartphone. marcus. all right. thanks, kerry. well, this morning calls are growing for the san mateo county sheriff to resign. a 400 page independent report lays out what it calls an administration of conflicts of interest and abuse of authority. today, in the bay's kris sanchez joining us live from redwood city. and, kris, what does the sheriff have to say about this? good morning to you, marcus. sheriff christina corpus rebuts that whole 400 page report and says that she was elected by the people. and that's the reason she is not going to step down. now, this is despite calls for
6:34 am
her to resign both from some of the county supervisors, but also the union representing the deputies under her command. just one part of that independent report reads, quote, lies secrecy, intimidation, retaliation, conflicts of interest and abuse of authority are the hallmarks of the corpus administration. the sheriff, also accused of having a personal relationship with her chief of staff. reports of racial and homophobic slurs also in the report found to be credible. the author of the report is ladoris cordell, a retired santa clara county judge and a former independent police auditor for san jose's police department. judge cordell's recommendation is that the sheriff step down, but the sheriff says she won't. i've been dealing with this kind of rhetoric my entire career. i am a woman of color that has gone up the ranks in a male dominated field. just yesterday, one of
6:35 am
the sheriff's chief critics was arrested for alleged theft. and that investigation is ongoing. but he is the president of the san mateo county deputy sheriffs association. and he says his arrest is more evidence of retaliation. i will not be intimidated by our sheriff. i will not tolerate the sheriff's abuse of our authority and retaliation against our union. now, the special meeting is set for 4:00. this afternoon. and before that, the san mateo county deputy sheriffs and the sheriff's sergeants association will hold a press conference. the board intends to forward the independent report to the san mateo county district attorney's office and the san mateo county civil grand jury, as well as the california attorney general's office. the board is also preparing an ordinance which they say will allow them to remove sheriff corpus if she refuses to step down in san in
6:36 am
san mateo county. kris sanchez today in the bay. all right, chris, thank you. 635. breaking news, special counsel jack smith and his team plan to step down before donald trump becomes president. scott mcgrew the latest sign that trump has beat charges yet again. yeah. that's right. at least the federal charges, right. trump accused of taking and sharing classified documents. and in a separate federal court, accused of meddling in american elections. now, those were supposed to go to trial, but justice department policy prohibits the prosecution of a sitting president. so smith and his team were left with nowhere to go. this is at once really big news and also really expected news. there's no other option for smith. now trump still on the hook for the millions. he owes after he was found liable of sexual assault in new york. he still faces sentencing in his fraud trial. and the georgia case is not federal, so there's no legal
6:37 am
restriction on that going forward, though that's always been the weakest case. i want to take you out live this morning. this is president trump coming off of his trump airplane or president elect trump. and he is headed to the white house to meet with current president biden. now, this is a long tradition dating back to the early 1900s. the most recent video we have of such a meeting is this one because trump didn't do it for biden. this is the obamas welcoming the trumps. now we understand melania trump might not be joining the president elect today. a lot of new names to learn this morning as trump announces the offices he wants to fill. two people, not one, will run the department of government efficiency. elon musk and vivek ramaswamy. john ratcliffe, nominated to run the cia. he used to be director of national intelligence. make a mental note of him. kristi noem will run homeland security. she's the governor of south dakota. pete hegseth is a tv
6:38 am
anchor. he will run the defense department. he's an iraq war veteran. you know, mike huckabee, former governor of arkansas. he will be ambassador to israel. this is all, of course, assuming the senate approves them. and that's an important part of the checks and balances, but important detail. trump wants the new senate majority leader, whoever that is. they vote on that today to allow him to make recess appointments. now, typically the president has the constitutional authority to make temporary appointments while the senate is not in session. but the senate has found a loophole where it never goes into recess. and it's been using that loophole for years. trump wants them to knock it off. now, you might ask yourself, hold on. the senate will be republican controlled. why would trump need the power to appoint people without approval? if the approval process is run by his own party? well, remember, john ratcliffe, the first time trump nominated him to be the director of national intelligence?
6:39 am
republicans said no. they were so worried ratcliffe would politicize american intelligence. so it's entirely possible not every candidate trump wants to put into government will meet with his own party's approval, and he wants to get the power to get around that. we can end on something lighthearted. the american bald eagle, long a symbol of our country. the house may vote as soon as today to make the bald eagle our national bird, which it isn't. we have a national anthem, the star-spangled banner. obviously, we have a national flag. the stars and stripes. we have a national motto. we have a national flower. national tree. that's the rose and the oak tree. somehow we never. laura got around to the bald eagle. i really thought we had. interesting. yeah. okay, thanks. well, if you're driving anywhere along low lying coastal areas over the next few days, be aware of the return of king tides. this is video from a previous round along san francisco's embarcadero. minor flooding areas in marin often include spots like luckey drive and
6:40 am
green bay. the redwood highway and the manzanita parkway and ride near tam junction. meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring the latest king tides that we've been seeing. we were out in pacifica earlier this week. yeah, so we had the high surf advisory for the coastline and then tomorrow we'll start to see those king tides causing the tides to be higher than normal. i wanted to start out with this beautiful sunrise that we have over san francisco. all right. these areas highlighted in green will be included in that flood advisory. due to the higher than normal tides that come up around late morning. so for san francisco, it will be at about 9:26 a.m. and we're expecting the tide to come up to over six feet. and then for those tributaries, some of the areas that feed into those low lying areas in the bays, they'll also have some higher tides. but this happens due to the gravitational pull of the moon, and we are now at its closest point this time of year. seeing the moon and the earth close together, that creates a greater gravitational pull and pulls that water
