for a decade is an army national guard veteran, an infantry officer who served in iraq and afghanistan would lead active duty troops. arguing it focuses too much on diversity. last week discussing how he would, quote, course correct. >> any general that was involved, admiral, general involved has got to go. also saying he opposes women in combat roles. it hasn't made us more effective, it hasn't made us more lethal or complicated. trump announcing vivek ramaswamy will lead a new department of government efficiency creating the manhattan project. trump says musk and ramaswamy will provide advice from outside the public government. musk who has been an adviser to trump and frequent presence at his mar-a-lago club runs companies that has billions of dollars in government contracts.

>> elon thinks he can cut the costs of our government by $2 trillion. >> ramaswamy has campaigned on ending federal agencies including the fbi and department of education, but it's unclear how much power the commission would have. former arkansas governor mike huckabee, an evangelical christian for u.s. ambassador to israel. huckabee strongly supports israeli settlements in the occupied west bank. >> there's no such thing as a settlement. they're community. >> president-elect trump has announced some of these cabinet picks much faster than his go round eight years ago, still, some could face potential roadblocks in the senate which confirms nominees for these high-level positions. trump is trying to avoid possible delays like those in 2016. he's demanding republican senators what he call recessed appointments that would temporarily place his picks in office without a confirmation hearing or a senate vote. savannah?

>> there's news breaking about special counsel jack smith who is handling the federal cases against the president-elect. what do you know? >> that's right. nbc news has confirmed that special counsel jack smith who has led the federal election interference and classified do you mean classes against president-elect trump is planning to step down before he takes office. you'll remember first reported last week that smith's office was evaluating the best path for winding down his work. trump has previously said that he would fire smith within two seconds, his words of being sworn in. the question is whether smith now will complete a final report on both of these cases explaining his charging decisions before the biden administration ends. of course, the justice department has a longstanding policy, savannah, against prosecuting a sitting president. so both of these cases basically would have gone away quickly once trump is sworn in. back to you. >> peter alexander at the white house. thank you. let's turn now to another

big story in washington today. after seizing control in last week's election, senate republicans have a very important decision to make. they're selecting a new leader for the first time in nearly two decades. nbc's capitol hill chris chris ryan nobles is following that story. hey, ryan, good morning. >> hoda, good morning. donald trump has yet to endorse a candidate to replace longtime republican leader mitch mcconnell and his presence in the leadership battle looms large. it will be a new era for republicans on capitol hill. for the first time in a decade and a half the senate is set to pick a new leader. >> hopefully we get rid of mitch mcconnell pretty soon. >> current republican leader mitch mcconnell who often tangled with president-elect donald trump is stepping away from his leadership post, opening the door to one of three potential candidates. senator john thune of south dakota, senator jon cornyn of texas or senator rick scott from florida. >> i think i'm uniquely

positioned to really help the trump agenda. >> scott claims he's the most loyal to donald trump. he's running an insurgent campaign fueled by support from conservative influencers like elon musk and kind words from trump's daughter-in-law laura. >> i certainly think rick scott would do an amazing job, but none of those influencers have a vote and the ballot is secret which could favor longtime senate leaders cornyn and thune. thune is currently the number two senate republican who initially did not endorse trump for president in 2024, but has since worked to get back in his good graces. cornyn is a veteran serving since 2002 and has promised to open up the prosis to move the trump agenda quickly. most senators like eric schmidt of missouri are keeping their decision private. >> we want to make sure we're executing on the mandate we got last week and have an agenda that looks out for working families. >> the new senate majority will fulfill trump's campaign promises from tax cuts to

immigration reform to judicial nominations, it must all come through the senate. meaning this decision will be crucial to the new administration. meanwhile, the race for control of the house of representatives is still not settled. there are 12 races that nbc news has yet to call. right now republicans need to win just two more of those seats in order to claim the majority, but no matter what, that majority will be very small and will be made even smaller when two house republicans elise stefanik and michael wall walz leave to join the trump administration. >> ryan nobles, thank you. the latest read on inflation is being released this morning, and it will offer a glimpse at the state of the economy one week after the presidential election. i want to turn to senior business correspondent christine romans. christine, good morning. so many people think of this as the inflation election that was a decisive matter. so what do we expect from this? >> hey, good morning. so as expected, no big surprise in this report. inflation rose 0.2% from last

month or 2.6% from this time last year exactly as expected, but that is warming up, right? that is slightly higher than october when inflation rhodes 2.4% and for some specific pain points here for the family budget, no signs of a shelter slowing down. these are housing prices up 0.4%. that takes the title as the biggest monthly driver of inflation in the american economy. food overall climbing 0.2%, but maybe some good news for your next trip to the grocery store. meat and egg prices dipped a little bit, falling 1.2% in october. as for where things stand right now in the stock market, you've seen quite a powerful rally in the stock market since the election of donald j. trump to a second term. the s&p 500 up 3.5% since he was projected as president elect. that's almost $2 trillion in added stock market value and that's a big deal. the stock market is held widely and everyone's 401(k) as half of americans have exposure to the stock market one way or another. stocks fell yesterday for the first time since the election,

but it's really not something to worry about. the market is up an incredible 780% since the financial cries crisis, 160% since trump's first term. president-elect trump will support deregulation and lower corporate texas and will be inclined to keep the stock market roaring as a read on the administration's performance. watch this space here. it's been quite a run. guys, back to you. >> all right. christine, thank you. let's go to new developments tied to the war in the middle east. israel is increasing the flow of aid to gaza. meantime, israeli officials are reacting to news on who could be the next u.s. ambassador to israel. nbc's chief foreign correspondent richard engel is in jordan for us. hi, richard. good morning. >> good morning, hoda. yes. the biden administration had threatened to cut off some military support for israel because of the lack of

humanitarian aid getting into gaza, but at the 11th hour the administration decided not to do that and that decision came as leaders all across the middle east are already starting to look beyond president biden and prepare for president trump. israel this morning says the ex-arkansas governor mike huckabee tapped by president-elect trump to be washington's next ambassador is a welcome choice. >> i think he would be a great ambassador to israel. he is very familiar with the facts on the ground. it was -- overnight, the biden administration also backed down from a threat to reduce american military support unless israel allowed more humanitarian aid into gaza by a deadline that expired yesterday. >> i would not view it as giving them progress being made. we would like to see some more changes happen.

>> the u.n. and humanitarian agree, warning that parts of gaza are once again on the brink of famine. we joined a rare air drop by the jordanian military. the crates on the c-130 cargo 13 contain some of the only food available to reach more than 2 million gazans. >> and there they go. 8 tons of food and medicine this time being dropped over southern gaza. floating down went olive oil, pasta, tomato sauce and medical supplies. we filmed as the crowds below grew excited as they watched the chutes open. many started to run, desperate to get whatever they could before it was gone, but 30-year-old abdullah maroof came back with an empty bag. it was a bust, he says. explaining that another palestinian family got there first and then fired guns in the air so they could hoard everything for themselves.

law and order has collapsed after a year of war and siege. speaking in brussels this morning, secretary blinken said the time has come for israel to end its war in gaza. officials in the biden administration have made similar comments before to no effect. hoda? >> richard engel for us there in jordan. thank you. >> a quarter after, wednesday morning. let's check in with craig. what have you got. >> savannah and hoda, good morning. good morning to you, as well. a massive explosion at a plant in louisville, kentucky. you can see it there. the factory was destroyed in that powerful blast. it is also now being blamed for at least two deaths. nbc's maggie vespa joins us with the very latest from louisville, maggie, good morning. >> good morning. we are about a block from where this explosion hand and we will show you the drama of the wreckage. homes within a mile of here shook when the blast happened prompting a shelter in place for

hours and leaving two people dead and this isn't the first time tragedy has struck this factory. this morning an investigation is under way in louisville following a deadly explosion and structure collapse at a commercial plant that's killed two people and injured about a dozen others. >> appears to be a large explosion. we have smoke showing. >> the blast seen from this sky camera blocks away happening tuesday afternoon blowing out windows in nearby homes. >> i was just inside of my house and heard a huge boom and the whole house shook. >> on scene, firefighters working to secure the site on the ground. >> we had one person that was pinned and we were able to get them out and rescue them as well as assist the others in the evacuation. >> the explosion leaving two victims. the company behind the factory givaudan confirming they were team members adding we are deeply saddened. the university hospital treating serve of the injured including two in critical condition. >> we saw a little bit of everything today.

>> this tragic scene an echo of a prior explosion at the same plant more than two decades ago that resulted in one death according to a federal government report. that investigation concluding at the time the incident was preventable. now this morning, more questions than answers with the cause of this explosion under investigation. and we are told that investigation is being led by louisville fire department with help from state and federal partners including a federal reconstruction team now on site from alcohol, tobacco and firearms. we expect a press conference and potential updates from local leaders later this morning. craig? >> maggie vespa. thank you. much more to get to including crews from both coasts facing mounting challenges as they work to get the upper hand on wildfires. this historic drought in the northeast. i want to turn to al now. good morning to you. we see the air quality warnings

and it's a really situation situation. >> 35 million people from new england to the delmarva peninsula. dry vegetation, low humid itd and the humidity level, dry air falls below 30% today across much of the northeast and because it's so dry, of course, and those winds, anything that sparks is going to cause problems. we would hope this system that will be bringing locally heavy downpours across the mississippi river valley today will bring some relief, but it looks like the rain will stay to the south especially in mississippi and parts of louisiana and there could be flooding there and as it pushes east tomorrow. it fizzles out, and pretty strong along the mid atlantic states. as you can see the heaviest rain stretching from the carolinas across the appalachians all of the way down into the gulf. so unfortunately, we don't get any relief from that as we move into the weekend. we are going to get to your local forecast in the next 30 seconds.

san francisco, where san francisco police are now confirming the death of a man in an apparent stabbing outside the embarcadero bart station. it happened a little before 6 a.m. at market and main streets. so far, police are saying little next to nothing about the victim or the investigation other than no arrests have been made. we also know the incident and police response briefly slowed bart underground traffic and closed that station. but operations are said to be up and running again normally. also this morning i'm bob redell. later this afternoon, the oakland unified school board will consider a proposal to combine ten of its schools into five. this is to help reduce the district's budget gap. all the schools are already located on shared campuses. students would continue their normal classes, but the administration would combine resources and staff in a message to parents. superintendent kyla johnson

the university has set up to honor the students with fresh flowers and candles here. i spoke to one student who said although the community is healing, the sun just doesn't shine quite as bright here on campus as it did before two years ago today. this morning marks two years since the brutal murders of four university of idaho students and for the families of the victims, two weers years of grieving as await the trial and closure. >> does it get easier? >> no. not really. you don't get over losing a kid. >> kaylee goncalves, madison mogen, ethan chapin and xana kernodle were kill in the small town of moscow. a surviving roommate saw a male figure black clothes and a mask walking toward the back door and they died from multiple stab wounds. it took seven weeks before police made an arrest in pennsylvania charging then 28-year-old criminology student

brian kohberger with their murders. >> your honor, brian is innocent. >> the trial is finally scheduled for august after a series of delays including a venue change. >> justice is slow, super slow. as long as we get it, it's worth the wait. >> the state versus kohberger. >> at a recent hearing in boise, a judge granting kohberger's request to wear street clothes in court as his attorneys pushed to take the death penalty off the table. >> the death penalty really ought to be abolished. >> on the university of idaho campus, students fill feeling the impact. >> the fact that four of your peers were murdered by someone, it's hard to kind of grasp that, and i don't know if i still fully have two years later. >> in an attempt to heal, the university tearing down the house where the murders happened. >> this is what it now looks like here. weeds are growing where the home once stood. all that's left, this small memorial, a reminder that the lives lost here have not been

>> i think people at home might be wondering what is taking so long? they have to go through the forensic evidence and there's quite a lot that the defense will have to keep up and the prosecution has its work cut out for it because it has to prepare the witnesses including the two surviving roommates who will have to get on the stand and tell their story. one of the roommates saying she saw a masked man and she'll be cross examined about that and it will be gruelling and they have to prepare for that. >> kohberger's team trying to get that off the table. how realistic is that possibility? >> i would be shocked if that's a winner mostly because it's a settled point of law at this point. it definitely is not used that frequently in idaho. it's only been three times since the 1970s and that's mostly because they can't get the drugs for lethal injection not because there is a policy against death penalty and if it is overturned it will happen on appeal. most people sit on death row for more than ten years and even if convicted he'll have the right

>> france is racing toward the cathedral's vast reveal. the roof installed and after the fire removed following years of delicate, laborious restorations. last friday a taste of the much-missed notre dame bells, sounding across paris for the first time since that inferno silenced them. rescued from the catastrophic fire, now repaired and ready to ring again alongside these special three olympic bells delivered to notre dame last week rang by american superstar gold medalists at the olympic stadium during the paris summer games. notre dame's meticulous revamp a well-kept secret, but we were shown a tiny hint last july, underneath the spire the intricate oak frame. >> we are at the base of the spire, a thousand pieces of wood carefully put together. the spire's oak base and wood ceiling complete, more than a century of soot cleaned from these murals and stained glass windows.

>> they're just stunning. they're so bright. the colossal restoration effort now in its final stages, a sacred space reborn getting ready to receive the world again. >> it really is quite remarkable, kelly, on so many levels what they've been able to do there. can you walk us through the last-minute touches before that official reopening? >> yeah. so a couple of things yet to do including a little bit of work inside, but most of the restoration work has been completed. there will be a candle lit procession on friday to bring that famous virgin mary statue back to its rightful place here at notre dame. it's been kept in another position for the past five years since the fire, and we are also told that inside, because all of those restorations have been completed, they've kept that kind of secret. they don't want to reveal what it actually looks like, but folks who have been in there say it looks completely different. that the stone, which has been covered in black soot for

it's some news about your health. >> it is, first of all, it's great to see you. >> i'm happy to see you, too. >> yes. five weeks ago i was diagnosed with stage three non-hodgkins lymphoma, and in that time i've had three surgeries. i've had chemo, i've lost a little bit of hair. i kind of look like a baby bird now, but it has been a roller coaster ride, for sure. yeah. >> what do the doctors say about the prognosis. >> this is b-cell lymphoma that i have. it's a very aggressive type of lymphoma, and it happened very quickly, and the onset of this growing lymphoma in my groin area was very quick. so i said something's not right. i have a golf ball down here, and so we biopsied it. we took it out, and they said we wish we had better news for you, but you know, you have b-cell lymphoma. we need to get you into chemotherapy right away. then we had another hurdle.

i told my wife melissa i got the news -- i was home by myself. she came home 20 minutes later, and she said have you heard anything? i said yeah. i have cancer, and she said come on, quit making jokes. i said no, i did. once that settled in it was a gut punch, but there was still another hurdle. we had to find out what the staging was, and so they, you know, went into my bone marrow and we got good news that day once we got the results that, you know, it hadn't spread and so at that point the curable iterate went up to 90-plus percent. so it is very treatable. >> let's go back to the beginning because you said it happened quickly. >> you had a cold like so many people do, and often when we have colds sometimes you feel achy or you feel like your lum of nodes are swelling up a little bit. you had a slight swelling in the lymph node in your groin that grew rapidly. is that what it was?

>> within days, hoda. it had gone -- i guessed i'll fight this cold off to the side of a golf ball probably within five days. >> you go to the doctor with that and they check your blood and say you're fine at that point, right? >> the blood work looked great, but they said this has grown rapidly so let's take a look and we did pet scans and ct scans and there were two hot spots in my body. the two hot spots that we suspected showed up in the scans so let's move. >> you had how many rounds of chemotherapy. >> i had one round so far. the next one is this friday. >> did you shave your head? >> i did a little preemptive strike because i knew it was coming so, you know, i fit better in my hockey helmet now. i am more aerodynamic on the ice. >> i should point out, you just played hockey. tell me how -- there are ways to

you could see at a minimum, that was an exchange of pleasantries, where in the last two years, it's been anything but pleasant the way these two have spoken about each other. some language we can't share with you on daytime television. joe biden casting trump as a threat to this nation and to democracy. i'm told they would be joined in this meeting at least by their chiefs of staff, susie wiles, who helped run the campaign for donald trump would be in attendance, as well as jeff zions, the chief of staffer to joe biden. unclear whether other individuals would be in that room as well. notably not in attendance today is melania trump, she did come with her husband back in 2016 as the obamas greeted the trumps then. melania trump's office in a statement saying today that she would not be attending, saying in the offices words that the

visit was quote encouraging and about her husband, saying that she wishes him great success, which leaves open the question about what role she will play in a trump administration. whether she will be managing the east wing and living here at the white house alongside of her husband. no answers to those questions at this point. lester, we're going to get more details as they come. i should note as one piece of color here, there have not been this many reporters and cameras from not just the united states, but around the world, since donald trump left office. the short walk for me to the west wing, you're hear languages from around the world, many anticipating the potential that donald trump could speak to reporters after that meeting is done. no indication whether that will occur. but it does sort of pull back the curtain on the scene after this historic campaign season. >> all right, peter alexander. as we continue to look at these pictures taken just moments ago, what appears to be a

fraud lies that he put out there in 2020 and his legitimate loss. people he believes are true maga believers and will fight for him on the international stage and domestically. as for staff members, he has named peter peter hegsath. he doesn't have that traditional experience. there's a question mark ahead for him. we also understand, based on our reporter, that florida senator marco rubio is set to be named secretary of state. that official announcement from the campaign has not come yet, but it seems to be pretty locked in at this point. we're still waiting on who might be named treasury, secretary of the treasury, and who might be named the next

attorney general to lead the justice department. those are two critical roles including president trump has talked a lot about the economy in tariffs, in what in his view he will do to improve the economy. but also what is the department of justice may do, retribution upon political opponents, so those are some question marks here. beyond this, he has installed allies in the executive branch with him. including a name that may be familiar to our audience, stephen miller. he is considered an immigration hard liner. he is likely to have a big role in shaping immigration policy. this was one of the things that did help propel president trump back to the white house. i mentioned elon musk earlier. let me just say this, both he and vivek ramaswamy is are being tabbed to be what you could call outside consultants

took us to see "oliver" the play in london in the west end and we sat at the top, very cheap seats and that was enough to awaken my sort of lifelong passion and she created a place where i could play, and i used to do ballet and i did sports and i thought i really want to jump into a leotard and my nana allowed me to be free in her house and you realize now when i saw the film i find it incredibly emotional because i could see in that the original dancing and singing that were my first joys and life is so short. to be returning to something that -- yeah, brings you that -- defines who you really are and my nana was there and supported there. >> thank you, nana. america thanks nana, as well. let's go back to the elaborate dancing number at the top that we just showed our viewers. someone made this reference out,

you really do steal a couple of scenes in the film and this was one of them, is it true that this took several days to film? >> yeah. so what you're seeing here is that would have taken two days, and that's the tornado wheel which moved in three different secks. sections. we had dancers that were parkour street runnerses and it took a week to shoot the sequence and you train as hard as you can with the choreographer and singing teachers so you can sustain that for ten days, and in the middle of that our incredible director who, i think, will play people's minds and his vision he had a baby and there was one day when i turned up and john was at home checking in via facetime and whatsapp as his wife gave birth. so yeah, it's amazing. the sense of family on this film and the passion and the creativity, but yeah, it's a dance number like this is where

fascinated people are with this? >> no. i think women really need that kind of straight talk, and i straight talked. >> yes, you do. >> yes, you do. >> let's do some straight talk about pie. >> my pie this thanksgiving and it's in the book is an apple crumb pie. >> that's my favorite. >> what's good about it, it's not only good right out of the oven and not only good the day of thanksgiving, but it's good for, like, two days later. it's still delicious. what do you think over there? >> insane. >> so good. >> goes well with champagne. >> i give you my old-fashioned pie crust. it's two and a half cups of flour, one teaspoon of sugar, one teaspoon of salt, two sticks of unsalted butter. >> is it cold? >> icy cold, and the secret to pie, and i said this on the "today" show probably ten times, make it cold, bake it hot. >> all right. >> you grind this up in the food

processor, and you get that butter into sort of little pieces and then add about between a third cup of ice water, and then that -- make it flat and wrap it in plastic wrap and put it in the fridge and chill it before you roll it out. then the crumb topping. >> oh. >> this is the crumb topping. >> delicious, by the way. >> 1 1/3 cups of flour, 3/4 of a teaspoon of salt, 3/4 of a teaspoon of cinnamon. stir that together. again, more butter. >> cold butter? >> icy cold, and just cut that. you can do it in here or you can do it with this. >> how do you prep the apples. >> okay. this is a lot of apples. this is four pounds of apples. >> what apples do you like? >> notice there? every kind of apple. i grow my own apples. >> of course, you do. >> of course, i do. of course, i do, and they've been so good this year, so

sweet. but all kinds of apples in the store, you want tart, sweet, sour, you want hard, you want soft. >> and then lemon juice. >> and then you add lemon juice and 3/4 cup of sugar and stir that up and put it into your fluted pie crust, and just pour this all in. and mix that up. i don't put a thickener. >> that's the topping. >> yeah, that's the topping and then -- it's a lot of apples. a lot and keep adding them until they fill that dish. >> and then you put the topping. >> not yet. >> not yet! not yet! >> you have to get all these in there, and then you put the -- you take that with your hands and crumble that over the top. >> what's the other pie you've got there. >> oh, my gosh. that's the cranberry tart. >> how's the cranberry tart? >> squeeze it and then put it down. >> over here you've got one of my favorites, brown butter shortbread. >> oh, my gosh, that's another delicious thing.
