though with that incredible news from the white house. >> yeah, president-elect donald trump returning to washington, d.c. for the first time since winning the election. >> the president-elect met one-on-one with president biden in the oval office today. mr. trump did not extend the same offer to president biden four years ago. both men spoke briefly in front of the press before continuing the meeting in private. >> congratulations. >> thank you. >> and looking forward to having, like we said, a smooth transition. we'll do everything we can make sure what you need. >> politics is tough and it's in many cases, not a very nice world, but it is a nice world today and i appreciate it very much. >> as we mentioned this hour, the breaking news that nbc news projects republicans will keep the majority in the house of representatives. that means the gop will have full control in washington come january. we'll have more from capitol hill this hour. >> let's start with the trump
12:03 pm
transition. aaron gillcrist joins us from washington, d.c. i called it incredible because we've rarely seen trump and biden so cordial. how would you describe how the meeting went? >> i think you're right. that was one of the words used by the white house press secretary to describe this meeting that lasted roughly two hours involving president biden, president-elect trump, and the white house chief of staff, the current one, and the incoming one. the meeting was described as cordial and substantive by the press secretary. she said the two men had a good back and forth. she indicated the president-elect came into the meeting with a list, a detailed set of questions, then president biden tried to answer each of those questions or as many as he could. we also hear from the president's national security adviser, jake sullivan, that there was at least part of their conversation that related to the war between ukraine and russia, indicating that the president
12:04 pm
told the president-elect that standing by ukraine is critically important and something in our national interest. in terms of color of the meeting, you can see the body language between the two men. the video you see here was probably about, it was less than a minute long because that's as long as as the press was allowed to stay in the room and president biden didn't say too much other than congratulations president-elect trump and offering to make sure there was a smooth transition between the two administrations, ladies. >> jd vance and kamala harris were not there today. what is the white house saying about potential plans for those two to meet prior to the inauguration? >> well, the white house really isn't saying much or hasn't said much up to this point. we know the vice president is back at work obviously after coming off of this whirlwind campaign that she conducted. we know she was at the white house yesterday. she had lunch with president biden and there's a source familiar told nbc news last
12:05 pm
night that the vice president elect's office had not heard from vice president harris at this point. i guess if we're being honest about this, the transition of power happens at the presidential level. that's where the power rests. and so there's not a requirement that the vice president and vice president elect meet, although some say having that imagery would be useful coming out of that campaign that was quite bruising. >> thank you. president-elect trump has been moving quickly to fill key roles in his administration in the week since winning. >> the president-elect has officially announced florida senator marco rubio as his pick for secretary of state and it comes after a surprising choice of a fox news host for the defense secretary. let's bring in dasha burns for the latest. talk to us about the rubio selection now confirmed. how significant is that? >> reporter: this is something we reported on earlier.
12:06 pm
the rubio selection is part of a universe where folks like susie wiles who will be his chief of staff. that universe of people is giving some relief to career civil servants, government traditionalists who want people with more typical resumes for these jobs installed in those positions. rubio is not a staunch isolationist in the way trump is. he's been more of a hawk on china, for example, and more in line with old school republican views when it comes to foreign policy. so people see that as nice balance to president-elect trump. slightly different views from old school republican policy. we'll talk about the other picks but there's been another set of more controversial choices that are alarming people. >> talk to us about the picks
12:07 pm
that are maybe raising some eyebrows. i know the defense secretary was one not a lot of people were expecting. >> reporter: this is a massive role and is going to a fox news host and commentator who doesn't really have experience in government. he has served in the military and served honorably but he holds some controversial views. he recently said he doesn't believe women should serve in combat roles in the military. he wants to go after what he and trump call wokism in the military, in going after diversity programs, for example. people like governor noem of north dakota who's going to be homeland security secretary. she does not have any experience with immigration. those are the sorts of picks that are more controversial and have some concerned about how it might impact the government and operations.
12:08 pm
>> the president-elect says elon musk will lead the department of government efficiency alongside vivek ramaswamy. some find musk may be overstaying his welcome. >> reporter: he arooifred at mar-a-lago, left, came back and hasn't left since he's been at trump's side for meetings, for calls, for a lot of moments in this critical transition period. there are some sources in trump's orbit who say it concerns some advisers that he may be overstepping. one source telling me he's acting as he's quote, co-president. some feeling like they've been too aggressive in having too many opinions on too many they thinks. you saw him today in washington, d.c. with trump. this is someone who looks like he's going to have a serious presence and that department of government efficiency, doge, as their calling it, that's also

alarming. particularly a union of federal employees says this could mean some massive pains when it comes to critical programs like social security, like medicare. still a big question mark how this brand-new agency task force, whatever you want to call it, will operate and the impact it's going to have. >> thank you. now to your money. we are getting an important update on inflation in america. >> the consumer price index for october was released and showed inflation rose 0.2% from september to october. if you look at the year-over-year number, it shows inflation rose 2.6%. these numbers are right where economists on wall street were expecting them to be. >> let's go to brian cheung to crunch the numbers. most people are not looking at those percentages. they're looking at the money in their wallets. what does this mean? >> let's put it in context because i think that will help people understand. 2.6%, that's how much prices

rose for everything between october of this year and october of last year. a faster pace than the 2.4% we saw in september to september period. if we zoom out and look at this chart at yearly inflation rates over the last two years, you can see yes, 2.6%, that's improvement from the over 9% we saw in the summer of 2022. we've been going sideways the past few months. we break it down by category. people will not be surprised that food prices continue to go up. energy prices though did stay flat but this is a big one for most americans. shelter costs accelerating by four tenth of a percent for september into october. the cost of mortgages, also rent. here are the prices you might be seeing at the store and pump. eggs getting a lot of attention. a lot of people referenced this at the poll last week. $3.37 for a dozen eggs. that's a lot more expensive than
