san francisco's iconic cable cars were live in san francisco. with the tough questions muni now faces and where it may hurt commuters the most, making a stand the walk some bay area students will take to today honor a civil rights pioneer and a bruising confirmation battle for one of president elect donald trump's latest cabinet picks. we're live in washington. with the immediate backlash on capitol hill. this is today in the bay. good thursday morning to you, 5:00 right now. thanks for joining us i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. we'll get a look at that commute with mike coming up in just a bit. but first that forecast for you on this thursday, meteorologist kari hall is tracking that more changes. you know yesterday we had the off and on showers. it was sunny. it was cool. it was breezy. and we're seeing the same thing again today. look at all the rain that's coming in from the north and even some very light sierra snow showers happening across the region. as we are going to continue to see the rain advancing into the
5:02 am
north bay, there will be some rain chances, mainly very light, spotty and light as it moves through, but we are already getting that wet weather enough to wet the roads. as you're heading out this morning, north bay will be the target for seeing a lot of this activity today, but notice how much of the rest of the bay area is only going to see partly to mostly cloudy skies. and as we go into the next couple of days, we're still looking at those rain chances lingering in and around the area, with highs only in the upper 50s to low 60s. i'll be tracking more changes for the weekend. that's coming up in a few minutes. but mike, you just heard about a traffic alert. yeah. and so the sensors have not yet changed. so they're starting to change now. eastbound 80 getting up through fairfield right around airbase parkway reports all lanes just got blocked by a crash. and the related activity? no major injuries reported. we'll track this. it's a larger vehicle, probably a tractor trailer there again, that's going away from the bay area. heading up through the north bay. the rest of the east bay shot looks fine here, but we have two more crashes to
5:03 am
talk about in the east bay. westbound 88 eaton canyon road. there's one lane blocked by a crash and a lot of activity slowing in the last few minutes. same thing. southbound 680. around sunol. we do have a disabled vehicle blocking your slow lane. back to you. thank you very much, mike. well, is it the end of the line for iconic parts of san francisco history? the chronicle is reporting there's a bleak outlook for the city's busses, trains and even its cable cars. today in the bay's ginger conejero saab joins us live in san francisco. ginger, how bad are we talking here? well, laura, we're talking about a deficit into the hundreds of millions. anywhere between 200 to $40 million to $320 million. and the chronicle is reporting that because of that budget deficit cuts could begin as soon as next summer. now, sfmta points the finger at the fallout from the failure of proposition l. voters failed to pass the measure a week ago. it would have taxed ride sharing services to provide an

additional 25 million annually for sfmta. right now, all of these are just ideas that are being floated with no proposed cuts just yet. but as of yesterday, the chronicle says staffers were at least considering ideas, including indefinitely suspending cable car service, doing the same thing with muni's historic f market streetcar line, and drastically cutting service on some bus and light rail lines. now also scaling back or cutting nighttime bus service and less direct routes. now, maybe this is a slight sliver of silver lining. i should say. ridership reached a post-pandemic high in september, with over 520,000 weekday boardings, but that is still under 75% of 2019 levels. weekend ridership has now nearly fully recovered at 92%, but that data did not include streetcars and cable cars will this recovery be enough? that is the
5:05 am
big question. with muni set to meet in the coming months to brainstorm on ways and how to cut into the deficit, and may even impact your own holiday shopping plans, muni has launched some new merch, hoodies, hats, socks, mugs, stickers, just to name a few, and i've taken a look at some of those items on the website. some of those are sold out. they're apparently doing really well here, but it is difficult to see how realistically how much this can impact hundreds of millions of dollars in deficit. we'll have to wait and see how those other ideas come along. we're live in san francisco, ginger conejero saab today in the bay. all right. thank you, ginger, for the latest there. well, happening today, a key moment in the controversial plan to build a massive sea wall along san francisco's ocean front. california's coastal commission will vote on the plan, which will likely cost hundreds of millions of dollars. it calls for a 3200 foot underground sea wall to protect a sewage tunnel along the southern portion of

ocean beach. it would also reroute the great highway and widen the existing beach. opponents, including surfers, argue the plan is so large in scope it may also do just the opposite and make the beach disappear in the event of heavy surf. today's meeting takes place at 9:00 this morning. turning now to a significant step in president elect donald trump's transition to the white house. he met with president joe biden for two hours in the oval office yesterday on capitol hill. gop senator john thune was voted in as the majority leader. now, republicans are also poised to return control of the house. today in the bay brie jackson. following many of those headlines out of washington and brie, the president and president elect met in the oval office yesterday, closed off to the media. but do we know what that conversation was like? so yeah, we do. good morning marcu. so administration officials say that president biden and president elect trump, they discussed key national security and domestic policy issues during their nearly two hour

that. says who? i'm the baby. i'm her baby. that is true. that is true. all right? you don't have to travel far. we're going to change up the weather every few minutes for you here in the bay area. we are going to start out with cool temperatures and see partly to mostly cloudy skies throughout the day. even a little bit of rain, but mostly in the north bay with cooler temperatures than we've recently seen. and then we also will have the return of king tides if you deal with that flooding, you know what i'm talking about. it goes on from today through monday, and we'll also have more chilly mornings ahead and sunday. another chance of rain. back to the king tides. we're expecting these areas shaded in green, included in a flood advisory. not because of any rainfall, but because of the higher tides due to the gravitational pull of the moon, which happens during our fall and winter months. and the high tide for san francisco will be between about 9 a.m. to about noon. so we are going to be
5:22 am
watching that time frame for that possibility, looking at the rain and just now getting a lightning strike just offshore. as we get a closer look at the rain moving over the north bay, there will be some pockets of some moderate to maybe some briefly heavy rainfall, but overall it's the north bay where we're watching out for that best chance of rain. the rest of the bay area may stay dry throughout the day, just mostly cloudy and temperatures on the cool side only making it up to 64 in novato and 64 in martinez, as well as san jose in san francisco, 62 degrees and then going into tomorrow, it's about the same still very, very cool for this time of year. upper 50s for the most part. and then on saturday, not much warmer as we see highs near 60 degrees. looking ahead to the weekend early next week, a couple of more storms in the next one, quickly moving through on sunday into monday, and then much of next week is dry and we'll see the return of high pressure and possibly some warmer

temperatures. so we only have a couple of shots of rain and no significant storms coming in. so it looks like for the most part, a lot of our inland areas won't see any rain for quite a while. mike, you've got a major issue for i-80. yeah. to put folks at ease. it's okay here. contra costa and alameda county is getting toward the bay bridge. is just fine. it's getting away from our viewership and heading up in toward davis through fairfield. we have basically all lanes of eastbound 80 getting away from us, blocked right now right around air base parkway. there's been a deadly crash, we hear. and so that means west texas over to north texas is the easiest alternate for you. lighter traffic on that major surface street. it will not be at capacity as the freeway. so we'll watch that as it builds through the north bay. we still have a crash coming in through castro valley west 580 and south 680 heading in towards sunol. back to you. thanks, mike. well, using ai to power new housing. coming up next on today in the bay. the new idea in silicon valley pg&e is using. and the way it helps battle r climateou

5:31 am
oh, it's coming up very close. want to say good morning to you? thanks for starting your morning with us. i'm marcus washington. i'm laura garcia. it is thursday morning. let's start out with a look at the forecast. meteorologist kari hall tracking what we can expect. a lot of rain for parts of the north bay, but cloudy skies and cool temperatures for us all. so we're going to see a mixed bag of weather as we see this unsettled weather continue with this system dropping in from the north. a closer look shows that we are getting some rain over parts of northern napa and sonoma counties and marin county as well, and it's going to be hit or miss with the rain activity as cool temperatures settle in all across the bay area. danville, you're one of the cooler spots. you're at 43 right now, and it is 53 in san mateo. much of the north bay in the upper 40s and low 50s and napa will see a spotty shower moving through right at about noon. otherwise, it will be partly cloudy. highs in the low 60s, and we will have another chance of rain in the forecast for the north bay for this morning. we'll talk more about
5:32 am
that coming up. mike, there are some incidents right now in the traffic report. major issues right now. this is eastbound 80 in through fairfield. folks, if you're traveling away from our viewership and heading up toward davis, no. eastbound 80 will be basically blocked at air base parkway because of a deadly crash. word is, it will take several hours to clear that you can use west texas to exit and then take calvert calvert over toward north texas. that will take you past the incident. it's a major surface street, so allow slower speeds. this part of contra costa county is just fine with typical slowing here, as well as highway 37 in the north bay. but another issue here west 580 coming in through castro valley there is that crash still in lanes at eden canyon road. no word on when they can reopen, but speeds are starting to improve a little bit. i'm tracking that closely, but chp has called an alert for here through sunol south 680, a disabled big rig blocks your slow lane and that may take a while. they need a special heavy duty tow truck to clear that rig. so right now there's already slowing out of pleasanton, heading down toward

fremont. back to you. thanks, mike. this morning, the san mateo county board of supervisors is officially calling on the sheriff to resign over alleged racist and homophobic culture in her department. today, in the bay's bob redell joining us live this morning. and bob, the sheriff not taking these allegations, lying down, she's actually fighting back in a surprise move of her own. correct. good morning. marcus and laura, the san mateo county supervisors, the board of supervisors also accused san mateo county sheriff christine corpus of being in a romantic relationship with her chief of staff, who the board was going to fire. they were going to fire the chief of staff, but last night, the sheriff walked into that board meeting meeting and told supervisors she would not let that happen. she made a surprise announcement to protect his job. this all comes as the board asked to retire judge ladoris cordell to conduct an independent investigation into allegations that her sheriff's office has a culture of racial and homophobic slurs,
5:34 am
retaliation and humiliation. the report also points to evidence showing sheriff corpus and her chief of staff, victor i. angel, were involved in a personal relationship. now, the sheriff says the inquiry was politically motivated. one sided and filled with lies. those are her words and as i mentioned before, the board was to consider a resolution to remove inge's position. last night, sheriff corpus again walked into the meeting and promoted him to a different position, effective immediately. i'm appointing doctor victor, i and j to the position of assistant sheriff. if we zero out a position, zero out its budget, and eliminate the position, and he's the one in it, he would be laid off essentially by her taking that proactive step today in. in live action before everyone. she protected him from that taking place. the board of supervisors still passed two resolutions eliminating inge's former

position and calling for sheriff corpus. resignation. they're also directing staff to transmit the report of that independent investigation to the da's office. the california attorney general and the san mateo county civil grand jury. supervisors also asked the county to look into whether victor inge could serve in the role of assistant sheriff, who the sheriff promoted him to last night, since they say his current status is as a reserve officer, not a sworn officer. we will continue to follow this story and bring you developments as they happen. reporting live, bob redell today in the bay. well, it's really continuing. thank you. bob. 5.34 right now, a make or break moment is at hand in the trial of nima momeni. so he is the man accused of murdering tech ceo bob lee in san francisco. well, many yesterday taking the stand in his own defense and that's when he told his version of the moments leading up to and following that deadly stabbing a year and a half ago. he says that the two

5:37 am
the bay kris sanchez joins us live from san jose. so kris, talk a little bit about how deep these cuts may go. you know, these cuts go really deep here in this alum rock community, laura. and if or when those seven schools close next fall, this is going to impact where thousands of children go to school and how their parents aim to get them there. i want to show you the schools that are on the final list. that will be recommended to the board today by the superintendent. it's cherrywood for elementary schools. toyon, lakeview, summerdale and ruskin on the middle school list. serramonte, piedmont and morrill. though the superintendent may request that one of those middle schools be converted into a k through eight school rather than close it. now, families have been pushing back ever since the closure plan was announced, but no amount of public pressure is going to change the fact that the alum rock school district has nearly 3000 fewer students than it did about ten years ago, and a $20 million budget deficit. you can cut every program. you can cut
5:38 am
as many district positions as possible. you're not going to get nowhere near the $20 million deficit that we're in, and it's 20 million per year. now, the superintendent will make his recommendation today at the school board meeting. if they vote, it will move on. if it's pushed to december, then those teachers and staff and administrators who are going to be laid off, they will be notified, likely in january. districts around the bay area are struggling with this issue of declining enrollment. there are just fewer children and there are fewer dollars coming from the federal budget. after those covid era funds that came our way. in san jose, kris sanchez today in the bay. all right. affecting a lot of people there. thank you. chris. well, now to a live look in san francisco, which is hosting its own first ever official version of a popular global festival starting tomorrow, diwali, the festival of lights is india's biggest holiday of the year, and

warm at the diwali celebration this weekend. we're going to start out at 57 degrees in san francisco. it will be clear for tomorrow evening, but once that breeze picks up and the temperature drops, it is going to be chilly out there. maybe you're heading into the chase center tomorrow night. here we're also looking at about the same temperatures in the low 50s, with a breezy wind. or you can join our mike inouye in san ramon for the kristi yamaguchi holiday ice rink. grand opening starts tomorrow night at 6:00. and look at the temperature 49 degrees. yes, it's going to be cool out there. i guess that's appropriate for ice skating, but if you're able to bundle up and spend a little bit more time outside this weekend, check it out. look at the night sky for the leonids meteor shower that will be happening from now through december 2nd. the peak is coming up, so we may be able to see about 15 to 20 meteors per hour. will be watching out for this sky condition for that. mike, you're continuing that traffic alert for the tri-valley. yeah. this is a bigger delay for southbound 680.

this disabled big rig still in the slow lane. they need a heavy duty tow truck, and that may take a while to get the equipment. we see the buildup already coming down. 680 off the dublin interchange. folks in pleasanton are hearing about this, likely getting over toward 84 to join past that incident, but it's adding to more slowing for 84, and that will affect folks coming out of the altamont pass as well. that's rougher news. however, better news for this 580 westbound into castro valley. the earlier crash has been cleared from lanes at eaton canyon road just minutes ago. we already see some slowing. things should smooth out, setting a lot of traffic over toward the castro valley, y prepare that for that. heading over through the area toward 880, which is moving at speed right now. we'll start to see the build. we do see north 101 in san jose. traditional timing for that south bay commute first burst back to you. good to know. thanks, mike. 540 right now in san francisco, it's beginning to look a lot like christmas, but not without some added uncertainty. just ahead on today in the bay. the growing concern last nights union square tree lighting may mark the end of, or

it's 5:45 right now. president elect donald trump naming two more people he wants in his cabinet. and they're controversial. scott mcgrew has been following this one. and scott, when you say it out loud, it makes you turn your head. but matt gaetz, who is under investigation by the justice department, will run the justice department. yeah, yeah, he was under investigation. now trump wants him to do that if confirmed by the senate. gaetz, the republican from florida, is so confident he's getting the job. he just resigned from congress. we were expecting the house, which, remember, is run by gaetz, fellow republicans, to issue a report about him this friday. not clear. that's going to happen now that he's not in congress. but the ethics report like the justice department investigation was looking into accusations gaetz was involved in the sex trafficking of a minor. gaetz denies he was involved. the doj never filed charges. but to your point, the idea that someone investigated
5:47 am
by the doj for a serious crime might then run the doj court. many in washington off guard, as did trump's naming of former hawaii congresswoman tulsi gabbard to be director of national intelligence. that would put her in charge of the cia, the nsa, all the american spy agencies. several republicans have accused gabbard of having two close relationship with russia, parroting russian propaganda, and she met unexpectedly and privately with syrian president bashar al assad and said after the meeting he was not an enemy of the united states. american troops were in syria at the time. gaetz and gabbard, along with fox tv host pete hegseth as defense secretary, will all have to get approval from the senate. and it may be the first time we see trump's version of conservatism run up against the more traditional republicans, like the newly elected senate majority leader john thune of
5:48 am
south dakota. here's thune speaking just after getting his job. and this republican team is united, are on one team. we are excited to reclaim the majority and to get to work with our colleagues in the house to enact president trump's agenda. now, thune would go on to say he looked forward to the process of approving trump's picks, perhaps subtly hinting each candidate will go through a full hearing and not by recess appointment that trump may prefer. as for hegseth, he like tulsi gabbard, is an iraq war veteran, but he has strong feelings about his experience with women in combat. in a clip from a podcast interview, been making the rounds on social media. i'm straight up just saying we should not have women in combat roles. it hasn't made us more effective, hasn't made us more lethal, has made fighting more complicated. most of them actually are. a lot of them are pushed. i shouldn't say most, but many are pushed into a combat track because they're so
5:49 am
highly capable. but if they had their first choice, it probably wouldn't be that. now we expect president elect trump to continue to name more names to his cabinet and other positions. one relatively non-controversial pick is marco rubio for secretary of state. presidents are entitled to have the people that they want in these key positions, to carry out the mandate that's been delivered to him by the voters of the united states. believe it or not, election results are still coming in. the republicans have now won enough seats to retain control of the house, meaning that party will run both houses of congress. laura. all right. thank you very much, scott. 548 right now, new this morning, the contemporary jewish museum in san francisco is set to close in one month. it plans to shut down for one year as it tries to preserve its financial stability and develop a sustainable operating model. it says it has been struggling to bounce back from the pandemic. the board of trustees says it's not a permanent closure, but a
5:50 am
strategic pause to ensure the museum's longevity. the contemporary jewish museum will be open free of charge through december 15th. well, the tree in san francisco's union square is now lit. marking the start of the holiday season in san francisco. three. two. one push. looks beautiful. right? well, the lights went on around 630 last night. of course, this comes as retail giant macy's announced earlier this year it was shutting 150 stores nationwide. and it's looking to sell the flagship store property that boasts the iconic wreaths in the windows every holiday season. well, the company representatives say that it is working with various partners to redevelop the property. the fate of the flagship store hasn't been determined just yet. it's you know, all in the hands of, you know, folks outside of what we do in the store day to day. the union square alliance is confident that it can help find a way for macy's to stick

around. it also adds that if you don't want macy's to close, come on out and visit and shop. there's your cue to go shopping. hey, here's a very happy birthday. in order for a world war two veteran in contra costa county. so today, the veteran is turning 104 years old. this is air force veteran sam avila. chino, and he was born in italy and came to the u.s. when he was just three months old. so last year, at his birthday party in danville, the mayor gave him a key to the city. but this year he will have a party this weekend. he says that the secret to longevity is wine, good pasta and no stress. and a good wife. of course, i want to say happy birthday to mister sam there 104. he looks amazing. so does wife. look at that. we still got it. what was it? wine. good pasta, no stress. and a good wife. and a good wife. or a good husband in her case. got it all. they got it all. good for them. all right, we're ready for you
5:52 am
this morning. two wickedly talented stars opened up ahead of the highly anticipated fall blockbuster and a little bit of insight for you this morning in what's sure to be a very popular movie. i'll help you be pop. you sure you'll hang with the right cohorts? you'll be good at sports. know the slang you've got to know. so let's start. cause you've got an awfully long way to go. don't be offended, okay? if you don't know it, you will. that's the popular song in the new movie. musical wicked. the film explores the backstory of the witches in the wizard of oz and the stars ariana grande and cynthia erivo are talking with today about the film. grande calls this a really full circle moment because as a child, she had a backstage encounter with kristin chenoweth wicked's original glinda on broadway. this has been like really a destiny for the two of us. we've loved it our whole lives, and i think we needed
5:53 am
these roles more than they needed us in certain ways. it just feels like the perfect balance between that manifestation and dreaming, but also the magic is real, too. wicked hits theaters one week from tomorrow, november 22nd. its distributor, of course, is comcast owned universal. you can watch the full interview with both the stars and a big surprise that they had for a special screening for nbc employees later on the today show. it's at 7 a.m. right after today in the bay. and someone on the set was lucky enough to already see it. i know he's more popular. yes, he's very popular. wow. yeah. and it was a good one. it was a good movie. it was a good movie. as i was saying yesterday, ariana grande surprised me. i mean, comedic timing. perfect. the singing from both of them, cynthia erivo as well as ariana grande. amazing. did they explain why in the video we saw she was putting on makeup, but if she's magic, can she just. you got to watch
5:54 am
the movie to see all about her magic. all right. oh, nice. all right. i already got my tickets. you got to buy them ahead, i guess. i know, all right. and hopefully it's a rainy day because it'll be cozy to be in. it's going to be definitely cold. so, i mean, i think that's a reason to try to escape from being outside too long. we are going to also have to deal with this. the return of king tides coming back this morning. coastal flooding expected to be minor, but in those typical spots that we always talk about, or if you live near one of those areas that deal with tidal flooding, well, you will have to watch out very closely for this over the next few days. the time frame is usually late morning from 9 a.m. until noon, and this kind of flooding is not because of any storm systems coming in or any rain. it's the gravitational pull of the moon this time of year. it's the closest point to the earth, and that pool brings that water farther inland. and we start to see these tides really having an effect on some of those low lying areas for the bay, those
5:55 am
park and rides and the trails that are near the bay. and we'll see that for the next several mornings, but also extremely low tides as well. looking at the rain coming in, this is what we'll be watching for the north bay, mainly with some off and on showers, cool temperatures and as we go, hour by hour does show some of that rain making it into san francisco. parts of the peninsula, possibly into the east bay. but as we go toward the early afternoon, we're getting a break in some of the activity. but really, at any point we could see some rain coming through. how much rain we're talking about here in santa rosa on northward, that could really measure up to about 3/10 of an inch of rainfall. many other areas, if you see some rain, it will be very light and won't last that long. and then we go back to some dry weather for the weekend. even though the storm pattern stays active across the region, another atmospheric river moving into the pacific northwest that will weaken as it moves closer to the bay area by sunday into
5:56 am
early next week. and then we have a period of high pressure building and warmer temperatures toward the end of next week. not looking at a whole lot of rain here. once again, the north bay seeing the best chance for today and a very light spotty rain tomorrow, but then dry for much of the rest of the forecast. mike, you're still tracking two traffic alerts. yeah, the biggest one is the closure of eastbound 80. this is in the north bay through fairfield, heading toward vacaville. eastbound 80 basically inaccessible because of a deadly crash that happened at air base parkway. it sounds like things won't open for hours right now. still, the option for you is getting over to west texas, which curves over to north texas. that keeps you well clear, but it doubles your travel route and also slower surface streets. so min that add another 20 minutes. i'd say at the very least right now. the rest of the east bay shows a pretty smooth flow on that. with the build of the bay bridge toll plaza, we have recovery now for 580, but 680 still slow past the disabled big rig. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. well, happening now for you. california is experiencing a big
5:57 am
rise in whooping cough infections. this is all according to the numbers from the state department of public health. california has seen 1800 cases through the end of september. there were only 644 infections reported in all of last year. for example, contra costa county, there have been 109 reported cases. that is up from just 16 last year. ucsf infectious disease expert doctor peter chin-hong says that the increase is likely due to a decline in vaccinations during the pandemic. big changes could be coming to a popular san francisco beach just ahead on today in the bay at 6:00. a controversial new proposal, which could help protect against erosion but could be tough for surfers looking to hang ten. and later, mark zuckerberg in the studio with t-pain. our scott mcgrew breaking down what the social media ceo is up to these days. you won't want to miss it
