may hurt commuters the most. this feels like a red alert moment for democracy. a brewing confrontation battle for one president elect donald trump's newest cabinet picks. we're live in washington. with the immediate backlash on capitol hill and across the u.s. and taking a stand, the walk several bay area students will take to today honor a civil rights pioneer. this is today in the bay. 6:00 on your thursday morning. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. we'll get a look at that commute coming up in just a bit. but first let's talk about that forecast for us today. you said a lot of changes for us. yes. and it's going to be raining off and on in the north bay. other areas are just dealing with some cool temperatures and a mix of sun and clouds. as we take a live look outside in san jose, and we're going to see those spotty
6:02 am
showers, cooler temperatures, and also the return of king tides that may cause some flooding and some of the low lying areas near the bay and the coast, and then chilly mornings ahead as sunday. the rain chances come back. we are seeing the rain right now, even a couple of lightning strikes that's off the coast and then some very light sierra snow coming down. but as we take a closer look at the north bay, we're seeing the rain coming through much of parts of marin and sonoma counties moving over towards santa rosa. and we'll also see that moving in and out of around napa county today. santa rosa, you're going to see that rain coming back around 10 to 11:00. and there will at any point today be some showers dropping out of those clouds. so i'll be tracking that for you. mike's tracking two traffic alerts. that's right. the one that's having the most impact right now as the volume builds through the tri-valley. look here. southbound 680, a disabled big rig still going on right around koopman on the right side and the slow lane. but the activity is causing a distraction slowing. and you only have two lanes getting past that. that's putting more pressure on 84. you see that slowing out of pleasanton and livermore and also over here
6:03 am
sending more traffic over to 880 and the castro valley y south 680. we don't know when those lanes will open. we do know it will be a couple of hours because of this deadly crash. for the second alert, eastbound 80 around airbase parkway. use texas street to get around that as your option. back to you. thank you very much. 602 right now, speaking of getting around, is it the end of the line for iconic parts of san francisco's history? the chronicle is reporting there's a bleak outlook for the city's busses, trains and even its cable cars. today, in the bay's ginger conejero saab joins us live in the city this morning. how bad are we talking here? well, laura, a deficit into the hundreds and millions of dollars. dollars anywhere between 200 and $40 million to $320 million annually starting in 2026. now, the chronicle reports that those cuts can begin as early or as soon as next summer. sfmta points a finger at the fallout of the failure of proposition l. that
6:04 am
is when voters failed to pass the measure a week ago. that would have taxed ride sharing services to provide an additional $25 million annually for sfmta run. now. right now, these are all just ideas being floated with no proposed cuts yet. but as of yesterday, the chronicle says staffers were at least considering ideas, including indefinitely suspending cable car service, doing the same thing with muni's historic f market streetcar line, and drastically cutting service on some bus and light rail lines. also, they talked about scaling back or cutting nighttime bus service and less direct routes. maybe this is a slight silver lining. ridership reached a post-pandemic high in september, with over 520,000 weekday boardings, but that number is still under 75% of 2019 levels. weekend ridership has now nearly fully recovered at 92%. that data did not include streetcars and cable cars, but the big question is, will this recovery be enough
6:05 am
now, with muni set to meet in the coming months to brainstorm on ways to cut into the deficit and may even impact your own holiday shopping plans, muni has launched some new merch. there are hoodies, there are hats, socks, mugs, stickers, just to name a few. quite a number of those items are showing that they are out of stock on the website, so that points to a possibly some popularity there, but it is hard to say in reality how much of an impact that will make when you're talking about hundreds of millions of dollars in deficit, but we'll have to wait to see what other ideas sfmta may propose. we're live in san francisco, ginger conejero saab. today in the bay. yeah, that would be a lot of sweatshirts you got to sell. thank you. ginger. well, turning now to a significant step in president elect donald trump's transition to the white house. he met with president joe biden for two hours in the oval office on yesterday. now, capitol hill gop senator john thune is voted
6:06 am
in as the majority leader. republicans also poised to return control of the house today in the bay's brie jackson. live for us in washington this morning. she's been following many of these headlines out of washington. brie the latest start with the white house meeting here. so the thing about it is it was closed off to the media as well as the public. but do we know what that conversation was about between the two? good morning marcus. so we know a little bit. we know that that meeting lasted about two hours. and president biden and president elect trump discussed key national security and domestic policy issues, according to administration officials. now this meeting happened as mr. trump announced surprising picks to fill his cabinet, including matt gaetz as his choice to become the next attorney general. do everything we can to make sure that president biden, welcoming president elect trump back to the white house. well, mr. president elect and former president and donald, congratulations. the president pledging a smooth transition, something trump refused to do
6:07 am
when he lost in 2020 but is now taking a softer tone. thank you very much. and politics is tough and it's many cases not a very nice world, but it is a nice world today. the president elect is moving quickly to fill key white house roles. his latest choices include tulsi gabbard for director of national intelligence. despite a lack of experience, and congressman matt gaetz for attorney general. gaetz played a key role in the historic move to oust former republican congressman kevin mccarthy from the speakership. i didn't like the way he handled the squabble with with speaker mccarthy. i think it was a i thought it was unnecessary. i thought it was divisive. i think that the conference suffered. i'll say this everyone who served with him will tell you he's one of the most intelligent members of congress. he's an accomplished attorney. gaetz is among the trump picks that will need senate confirmation.
6:08 am
democrats are raising alarms. this feels like a red alert moment for democracy. there were a lot of people, both my colleagues in the senate and voters in this country who didn't believe trump when he said that he was going to turn the department of justice into an arm of the white house. president elect trump's return to washington, bringing a handshake inside the oval office and concerns on capitol hill. and when announcing his choice for attorney general, president elect trump describes matt gaetz as a tenacious attorney. while some current justice department officials have called trump's pick for top cop truly stunning and insane. now, matt gaetz has been a critic of the justice department and defended people charged in connection with the january 6th attack here at the u.s. capitol. marcus. all right. brie jackson in washington for us. brie. thank you. well, just into our newsroom, and this certainly has our attention here at nbc bay area. the today show is naming craig melvin as the

new permanent co-anchor, along with savannah guthrie replacing the departing hoda kotb starting in the new year. the today show team just made the announcement during its east coast airing. craig first joined the today show team in 2018. he'll take over monday, january 13th with hoda's goodbye planned for friday, january 10th. there's still no word on who will join jenna during the 10 a.m. broadcast. well, happening today, students across the u.s. and the bay area will take part in ruby bridges walk to school day. in 1966 year old ruby bridges was the first african-american student to desegregate her all white new orleans school. federal marshals escorted her as she faced an angry and racist white mob. a group of fifth grade students in south san francisco actually started the commemoration event in 2017, and since it's turned into a national commemoration of the historic civil rights movement. interviewed here just last month. i know that. very

cool. amazing woman. all right, well happening today. a key moment in the controversial plan to build a massive seawall along san francisco's oceanfront. california's coastal commission will vote on that plan, which will likely cost hundreds of millions of dollars. now it calls for a 3200 foot underground seawall. this is to protect a sewage tunnel along the southern portion of ocean beach. it would also reroute the great highway and widen the existing beach. now opponents, including surfers, argue that that plan is so large in scope that it may also do just the opposite and make the beach disappear in an event of a heavy surf. today's meeting takes place at nine this morning. it is 609. let's take a live look outside. oh, look at that. over san jose this morning. sun coming up. carrie's got a look at our forecast. kind of got to keep the umbrella handy these days. yeah, it's at any point you can see at least a spotty sprinkle moving through. but we've also been watching the coastline with a high surf advisory that will be in effect. we could see some big breaking waves anywhere from 12 to 15ft
6:11 am
because of those storm systems that have brought those spotty showers moving in. and there may also be some sneaker waves and rip currents. a look at half moon bay today. it's going to be mostly cloudy, fog to start, and we're staying in the 50s here today, so it is going to be a chilly day. and actually the air temperature is kind of matching the water temperature with some upper 50s there. here's a look at the rain that we are seeing right now. and moving into the north bay with some light rain, but we'll have to see this activity continuing at least for the next few hours. heading over to you, mike, you've been tracking where we can find some lower gas prices. yeah, we're checking around the bay, folks. and so we're going to give you this list of cities today. livermore still has the best prices, but we're going to check with contra costa county, a bond fair market over there at willow pass that's actually in concord. my mistake. i put the wrong name up there. bond fair market on willow pass road in concord. next up, correct name. mill valley has the best from marin county, where we have 377 at arco on redwood highway. and then following the number of signs reading 383 in cupertino,

marin county. there's going to be some high tides that come up much higher than normal due to the gravitational pull of the moon. so this time of year, the moon is at its closest point to the earth. and so that is known as perigee. so we are going to see that pulling that water farther inland from today through the next few days. if you've been up in the middle of the night, you know that also we're approaching that full moon and it appears very bright. some of us haven't been able to see the moon because of the clouds coming in, and we're seeing the rain in parts of the north bay with some scattered showers moving in from cloverdale to healdsburg, santa rosa. as you're heading out this morning may not be raining at the time, but as you're driving to work, the roads are wet and we're going to see these waves of showers coming through between now 10 to 11:00, possibly moving down the peninsula into the east bay. not all of us will see the rain, but there will be a chance that we could at least see some brief passing showers today. mostly cloudy and temperatures

staying on the cool side. some of our models are showing that we have the possibility of measuring a few hundredths of an inch of rainfall, so this is not a big soaker, and our temperatures will only make it into the low to mid 60s for the south bay and east san jose. it will be 65 degrees and for parts of the east bay we'll see a high of about 66. in concord, 64 in oakland today. and staying in the 50s near the coast in half moon bay. san francisco, upper 50s to low 60s. and for the north bay, up to 60. in santa rosa and throughout the forecast we're looking at more of the same temperatures, only some modest warming toward the middle of next week as high pressure returns once again and slight rain chances in the forecast here and there. we may have a better chance of rain on sunday in san francisco. and mike, you have an update for that north bay alert. that's right. the traffic alert closed eastbound 80. that's the alert here after a deadly crash happened. this morning just before 5 a.m. we're hearing lanes may not open until eight. or at least that's what the initial assessment was for

the investigation. now, the fairfield police have been letting us know that north texas and air base parkway are both flooded, as that's where folks are forced off the roadway before the closure. i'd say take west texas and get past that. you'll have to funnel to the same slowing. meanwhile, the rest of the east bay showing a pretty typical build toward the bay bridge. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. 622 right now. with last year's rain, california's drought may be over, but it doesn't mean we should stop worrying. we started seeing drought driven more by high evaporation rates and higher temperatures ahead. we're breaking down the new factors, researchers say, could make our drought conditions worse. keep it rightere. you're watching h

is expanding in the u.s, and it's not only due to a lack of rainfall, but scorching temperatures are making for a very thirsty atmosphere. researchers from ucla, the university of colorado and the climatologist with noaa found that evaporative demand, or how dry the atmosphere is, has played a bigger role in the lack of precipitation in the last two decades. one of the notable areas of this expansion is through california's central valley, where, when we're comparing the period from 1948 to 1999, droughts were very much driven by changes in precipitation patterns. but
6:27 am
after around the year 2000 to 2022 through the central valley, we've seen that shift to evaporation driven droughts and lizenby. that climatologist says that we could see bigger changes in our soil moisture and faster snowmelt rates. and he says the droughts in the future may not look like droughts. in the past, which may force us to explore different water source options. you can hear the full story, including why dry conditions are impacting rare wildfires right now on the east coast. during our 8 a.m. streaming newscast, be sure to tune in on roku, pluto, and other streaming platforms, and we'll be sure to post this story on nbcbayarea.com. look for it on our climate in crisis page. thanks so much, kari. well, we do have a lot more ahead for you at 630, including san mateo county sheriff officially facing calls to resign over allegations of bad behavior. the sudden move she just made as county leaders pushed to remove her from offic.

now, at 630, defying calls to resign. the san mateo county sheriff doubles down on mounting pressure from local leaders. her surprise twist in response to allegations of an inappropriate relationship within her department. several campuses on the chopping block. a troubled south bay school district facing some tough questions about closures. the make or break meeting today leaving south bay families in limbo. and with the cierra bracing for winter, residents are sounding alarms over a major snowplow driver shortage. the measures being taken so people that live there and visitors don't get left stranded. this is today in the bay. that's a lot of snow to shovel. yeah. all right. good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. snow, you say? well, let's turn to meteorologist kari hall. no snow here in the bay area, of course, but. but certainly more rain. yes. we are
6:32 am
going to see some off and on showers, some light snow for the sierra. we're looking forward to seeing that. really getting going as we head deeper into november. but we are all dry at least for the south bay. while we are seeing some spotty showers. kind of off and on for today and tomorrow, there may even be some isolated thunderstorms in the north bay with a breezy west northwesterly wind at 10 to 15mph. and we talked about snow a little bit. it will be returning today for the sierra, and we're already seeing this system that's bringing north bay some rain, some light snow showers farther to the north and those higher elevations. and looking at the rain moving through much of sonoma county. some spotty activity in lake and mendocino counties this morning as you head out. the roads are wet. so santa rosa, you're seeing the clouds. you already had some rain moving through, and there will be another wave of showers between 10 and 11:00 with cool temperatures into the afternoon. and we'll be talking about what's going on this weekend, coming up in a few minutes. marcus. all right. gary. thank you. well, look, this morning, the san mateo county board of
6:33 am
supervisors officially calling on the sheriff to resign over an alleged racist and homophobic culture in her department. today, in the bay's bob redell. joining us live this morning. okay, so, bob, the sheriff is fighting back with a surprise move of her own. correct. good morning. jim marcus. the san mateo county board of supervisors accuses san mateo county sheriff christine corpus of being in a romantic relationship with her chief of staff, and the board was going to fire that person. but last night, the sheriff walked into the board meeting and told supervisors she wouldn't let that happen, and she made a surprise announcement to protect his job. this all comes as the board asked retired judge ladoris cordell to conduct an independent investigation into allegations against the sheriff's office that describes a culture of racial and homophobic slurs, retaliation and humiliation. the report also points to evidence showing sheriff corpus and her chief of staff, victor angela, engage
6:34 am
involved in a personal relationship. now the sheriff says this inquiry was, quote, politically motivated, one sided and was filled with lies. as i mentioned before, the board was to consider a resolution to remove i and j's position. sheriff corpus walked into that meeting last night and promoted him to a different position, effective immediately. i'm appointing doctor victor, i and j to the position of assistant sheriff. if we zero out a position, zero out its budget, and eliminate the position, and he's the one in it, he would be laid off essentially by her taking that proactive step today in. in live action before everyone, she protected him from that taking place. the board of supervisors still passed two resolutions eliminating inge's former position and calling for sheriff corpus resignation. the board is also directing staff to transmit the report of that independent investigation to the
6:35 am
da's office. the california attorney general and the san mateo county civil grand jury. supervisors also asked the county to look into whether victor inge could serve in the role of assistant sheriff, since he is currently just a reserve officer and not a sworn officer. reporting live. bob redell today in the bay. certainly want to continue to follow bob. thank you. 634 right now, a make or break moment is at hand in the trial of nima momeni. he's the man accused of murdering tech ceo bob lee in san francisco. but many yesterday taking the stand in his own defense. that's when he told his version of the moments leading up to and following the deadly stabbing. a year and a half ago, he says, the two took drugs in the car and when they got out of the car, lee pulled the murder weapon from his own pocket and lunged at nima momeni also told jurors he drove off from the scene because he didn't realize
6:36 am
lee had been stabbed repeatedly, and he claims he only found out lee was dead the next day. prosecutors today resume their cross examination. today is a day thousands of south bay families have been dreading. the alum rock school superintendent will present the list of schools he recommends closed to close up a giant budget deficit. today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us live from san jose this morning. talk a little bit about how deep these cuts go. certainly affects a lot of kids and families. well, laura, you know that our school communities are such a big part of our family lives. and so the cuts will go very deep here in the alum rock school district. and when or if those seven schools close next fall, this is going to impact thousands of school children where they go to school and even how their parents get them there. i want to show you the seven schools that are on the superintendents final list that will be presented at the school board meeting tonight. they are cherry wood, toyon, lakeview,
6:37 am
summerdale and ruskin. those are the elementary schools on the middle school list. serramonte piedmont and morrill. although superintendent german cerda will request that one of those schools be converted into a k through eight school rather than close altogether. now families have been pushing back against these closures ever since the plan was announced, but no amount of public pressure will change the fact that the alum rock school district has nearly 3000 fewer students than it did ten years ago, and a $20 million budget deficit. you can cut every program you can cut as many district positions as possible. you're not going to get nowhere near the $20 million deficit that we're in, and it's $20 million per year. all right. so the timeline is that the superintendent will make the recommendation tonight. the board could vote if they push that vote to december. then teachers staff administrators who will be laid off will be notified in january. but we know that districts all around the bay area are struggling with the
6:38 am
same issues, which is fewer federal dollars coming in post covid and more than anything, declining enrollment. there just aren't as many students and fewer students mean fewer dollars. oakland is having the same discussion. they are talking about closing ten schools in the east bay in san jose. kris sanchez today in the bay. all right. thank you very much for the latest there, kris. well, new at six a live look for you over at palisades tahoe ski resort, which officially opens in 13 days. and the resort just announcing the return of its parking reservation system. this is to help reduce the traffic. it's going to cost you $30 on weekends and select holiday periods. meanwhile, homeowners, they're already starting to worry about the winter access in and around the tahoe basin. that's because el dorado county is facing a shortage in snow plow operators, with 16 on the current staff and at least ten job openings. the current job posting offered $34 an hour with a $6,000 bonus. some of those neighbors fear that they may become stranded if nothing is
6:39 am
done. some of these house could burn down from a chimney fire because a fire department couldn't reach them. that's outrageous. so the liability they're accepting by not having snow removal 24/7 is huge. county supervisors say hiring more workers is not an easy task, but they're also working within the current budget constraints. and this is to add more staff. so tough job. yeah. and we know the rain that we've been seeing here means some snow in the sierra as well. kari has been tracking that all for us. yeah, a little bit more coming down today. i wanted to show you the live view of palisades. you know, i love this. as the sun rises and you get the view of the fresh powder in the morning. this is a camera. this is not a picture. and we are seeing the clouds rolling by overhead and temperatures this morning starting out in the 20s. if you're going to keep it here at home for today and into the weekend, we're checking out some of the events going on around
6:40 am
the bay area. we've got the diwali celebration in san francisco this weekend. it's going to be cool. temperatures in the mid 50s and coming down to the low 50s by late tomorrow night. also about the same weather for the warriors game at the chase center. at least for this year. inside, unless you're cheering them on in thrive city. so make sure you're wearing the layers and also bundle up if you're going to the grand opening of the holiday ice rink in san ramon, you'll be able to join our mike inouye there. starting at 6:00, it will be 53 degrees. yeah, that's ice skating weather, i'd say. as we take a look at what to expect and if you have a little bit of time, if the sky is clear, look out for a little bit in the middle of the night. you may be able to see anywhere from 15 to 20 meteors per hour as the leonids peak over the next few days. and mike, you have a warning about commuters about the next two delays. yeah, we have two unexpected delays. the first one actually should start improving as they've cleared this disabled big rig. i see the speed sensor starting to improve. the 6 or 7 miles from the dublin interchange down past
6:41 am
the scene around koopman, so that will relieve some of the pressure on 84. and we do see the build on 880. and that will probably stay standard for the morning as folks travel through the area. south bay starts that san jose slowing their 101 typical pattern. typical sections. east bay not so surprising. we have the build through walnut creek now starting as well. and the second alert is the unexpected delay getting out of this area. heading toward fairfield for eastbound 80, still closed around airbase parkway. fairfield police say surface streets are flooded. you can use west texas and north texas to get around. back to you. hope everyone's cool out there. all right. thanks, mike. 640 right now in san francisco, it's beginning to look a lot like christmas, but not without some uncertainty coming up. the growing concern last nights union square tree lighting may mark the end of a holiday tradition. president elect trump continues to name names of people he would like in the cabinet, and on his staff, and some of them are getting really controversial. plus. you're

people he wants in his cabinet and their controversial scott mcgrew joins us now. matt gaetz, who was under investigation by the justice department, will run the justice department. yeah, that's one of the big controversies. and this is if he's confirmed by the senate. gaetz, the republican from florida, is so confident he's getting this job. he just resigned from congress. we were expecting the house, which remember, is run by gaetz fellow republicans, to issue a report about gaetz this friday. not clear. that's now going to happen now that he's not in congress. the ethics report like the justice department investigation, was looking into accusations gaetz was involved in the sex trafficking of a minor. now, gaetz denies he was involved. the doj never filed charges. but to your point, the idea someone investigated by the doj for such a serious crime might then run the doj court. many in washington off guard, as

did trump's naming of former hawaii congresswoman tulsi gabbard to be the director of national intelligence. that would put her in charge of the cia, the nsa, all the american spy agencies. several republicans have accused gabbard of having too close relationship with russia, parroting russian propaganda. and she met unexpectedly and privately with syrian president bashar al assad and said after the meeting he was not an enemy of the united states. now, american troops were in syria at the time. gaetz and gabbard, along with fox tv host pete hegseth as defense secretary, will have to get approval from the senate. and it may be the first time we see trump's version of conservatism run up against the more traditional republicans, like the newly elected senate majority leader john thune of south dakota. here's thune speaking just after getting that job, this republican team is united. we are on one team. we

are excited to reclaim the majority and to get to work with our colleagues in the house to enact president trump's agenda. thune would go on to say he looked forward to the process of approving trump's picks, perhaps subtly hinting each candidate will go through a full hearing and not a recess appointment trump may prefer. as for hegseth, he, like tulsi gabbard, is an iraq war veteran, but he has strong feelings about women in combat. a clip from a podcast interview making the rounds on social media. i'm straight up just saying we should not have women in combat roles. it hasn't made us more effective, hasn't made us more lethal, has made fighting more complicated. most of them actually are. a lot of them are pushed. i shouldn't say most, but many are pushed into a combat track because they're so highly capable. but if they had their first choice, it probably wouldn't be that. if hegseth gets the job, he says, he will dismiss chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, air force general charles brown. trump
6:48 am
appointed brown as chief of staff of the air force, calling him a great patriot, and that led to brown's later position as chairman. but some conservatives did not like brown's to decision record this video for his troops. after the death of george floyd. the dumbest phrase on planet earth in the military is our diversity is our strength. it's our unity is what unites us, our unity of effort, our ability to say, yes, we're different, but we come together as a team to accomplish a mission. we expect president elect trump to continue to name more names to his cabinet and other positions. one relatively non-controversial pick, marco rubio for secretary of state. presidents are entitled to have the people that they want in these key positions, to carry out the mandate that's been delivered to him by the voters of the united states. now, believe it or not, election results are still coming in the republicans have now won enough seats to retain control of the
