some unbelievable things, nobody's going to be able to do it like you. >> we're joined now by brie jackson. good morning, brie. kennedy's ideas may not be popular enough for an easy senate confirmation. >> reporter: that's right, good morning, frances. so robert f. kennedy jr. has faced a lot of criticism over his public health views. kennedy has promoted controversial ideas like bank fluoride in drinking water and allowing raw milk. he's also known for repeatedly pushing false claims about vaccines and questioning their safety. he did tell nbc news last week that he would not take any vaccines off of the market, but he did say he wants to overhaul agencies. >> what does that look like? >> in some categories, the entire departments, like the nutrition department at fda that are, that have to go. >> reporter: and mr. trump's pick for attorney general is trying to rally support. multiple sources tell nbc news

that matt gaetz has been calling senate republicans, asking them about his chances to be confirmed. when gaetz resigned from congress, that ended a house ethics investigation into whether he engaged in sexual misconduct and illicit drug use. allegations that he denies. but senators say they want to see the report. >> i want to know what's in the ethics committee report. it's a bipartisan item that relates to very serious charges. >> considering that the fbi's going to do a background check anyway, i can't imagine the committee's not going to want to see it. >> i am going to demand release of the ethics committee report. matt gaetz has chosen to resign from the house, but he can't choose to conceal. >> reporter: meanwhile, the newly-formed department of government efficiency says it is

explosive belt. agents say saeid also told them he considered attacking members of the military if they supported israel. the 28-year-old is charged with attempting to provide material support to isis. he pleaded not guilty. the u.s. ambassador to lebanon has submitted a draft truce proposal. it is the first written proposal by washington to end fighting between israel and hezbollah. as israel continued intense attacks on hezbollah-controlled suburbs in beirut for a third straight day. on wednesday, secretary of state antony blinken said the u.s. wants real extended pauses of fighting in gaza so assistance can get to those who need it, adding the best way to do that would be to end the war. let's turn now to matt bodner, what do we know about this initial proposal? >> reporter: frances, good morning. we still don't know very much about the content of the proposal but they are optimistic a cease-fire can be reached.

officials have signaled some optimism for some kind of deal. the energy minister, eli cohen said prospects for a cease-fire were the most promising since the start of the conflict. based on previous efforts to secure a cease-fire in lebanon, we would potentially see something like a 60-day cease-fire with hezbollah pulling forces back from the lebanese-israeli border among other things. the biden administration is pushing for a cease-fire before leaving office, and the "washington post," citing three current and former israeli officials is reporting that netanyahu himself may be looking to secure a cease-fire to present to the incoming administration with an early oreign policy win. as for the war in gaza, secretary of state antony blinken said on wednesday that the u.s. want as role and extended pause in fighting in gaza so that humanitarian aid can reach palestinian civilians who desperately need it. a u.s.-imposed deadline for israel to take steps to address the humanitarian situation in gaza passed on tuesday with the

state department saying its policy of arms transfers would not change. they're saying that israel has taken a number of positive steps. however, eight international aid groups have said that israel has not met the u.s. demands, and other experts are warning that a famine is likely imminent in parts of gaza. frances? >> matt bodner for us, thank you. the murder trial of jose ibarra is set to begin in just a few hours in athens, georgia. he is charged with killing laken riley. her murder has added fuel to the national debate over u.s. border security. ibarra, a venezuela citizen, entered the country unlawfully in 2022. he has requested a bench trial where a judge will decide his fate instead of a jury. he's facing life in prison without parole if convicted. a worker is safe this morning after a desperate rescue effort in kentucky. the man was trapped for hours

on the jennings creek fire which devoured around eight square miles across new york and new jersey. the new york side is at 30% containment. some of the blazes in the region have been set on purpose. police in new jersey charged a juvenile with deliberately setting a fire. and on island, a firefighter was charged with arson for a brush fire in suffolk county. and as dry conditions are expected to continue through the weekend. let's see if there's going to be any relief in sight. here's angie lassman. >> unfortunately, not a whole lot of rain in sight to help with drought conditions across parts of the northeast. we've still got more than 40 million people under fire alerts. we'll expect elevated winds, too. anywhere from philadelphia up to portland we'll see the potential for elevated risk for fires to start and spread. heads up for folks there as we get through the day today. we're also watching parts of the caribbean where we see tropical

kraft could face a class action lawsuit over iconic mac and cheese, but first a luxury merger is unraveling his morning. karen gilchrist joins us with the details. good morning, karen. >> good morning, frances. happy friday. yes, it looks like the end of the road for luxury fashion houses capri and tapestry, who have called off their planned deal after facing a successful lawsuit. sorry, a successful, after being successfully sued by the federal trade commission who tried to block the mega deal. now this was an $8.5 billion deal which would have brought together designer brands, including jimmy choo and michael kors on one end and coach and kate spade on the other, but they decided mutually yesterday to call off the deal after thinking they would not get this

passed after the expired. that's because the lawsuit said it would harm competition for employees. and this is the latest of cracking down on mergers. the kraft heinz company must face a class action lawsuit over allegations that it defrauded customers by claiming that its mac and cheese product contains no artificial preservatives. this comes after claims that it contains synthetic products which undermine labels which claim it doesn't contain such elements. kraft heinz disputes the claims saying there are no factual allegations behind these claims and that no reasonable consumers would assume there are
