controversial cabinet. in his latest appointment, president elect trump picks robert f kennedy jr for health secretary. but some wonder if he can survive the confirmation process. we're live in washington with major concerns this morning on capitol hill rv crackdown. the new measures one south bay city is talking about and taking talking about when it comes to long term parking and the software. some argue, may go a step too far. we're seeing a

lot less resources, so it's critical for us to get the resources necessary to meet the needs for people throughout the holidays and beyond. nourishing neighbors. this morning we kick off our holiday food drive. how you can help more local families make it in the bay. this is today in the bay. a very good friday morning to you at 6:00 right now. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. we'll get a look at commute coming up in a bit with mike, but first it's cold outside. yes. and it gets even colder these next few days. that's going to be the main thing we'll notice is do i turn on the heater or not? as of right now, we're in the low 40s, which is nothing compared to what we have coming this weekend. it is 50 in palo alto and 50 in san jose. and so as we take a look at what to expect, there will be breezy and cool conditions over the next few days. king tides causing some
6:02 am
tidal flooding late morning from this morning through monday. and then the north bay will have a freeze warning in effect starting tomorrow morning as our temperatures dip even lower from what we're seeing right now, we're headed for 62 in napa. it will be 62 today in hayward and 59 in livermore and dublin. upper 50s for morgan hill as well. these temperatures cooler than what we typically see for the middle of november, but we will continue to track those cold temperatures. and mike, you're tracking a crash on the roads. this one's still going on here for castro valley. so folks driving from 885 8238. if you're heading toward dublin through castro valley, you're down to two lanes still right around grove way. that's the other side of the freeway from crow canyon road, and that will jam you up unexpectedly slow, especially for a friday. but this is considered counter commute this morning. it's considered the slowdown for the east bay. everything else moves pretty smoothly outside of the altamont pass. a little build for the nimitz as folks travel past hayward and southbound direction. and we're looking at
6:03 am
san jose north 101, the end of the first slowdown. we have there, the bay bridge toll plaza. we do have the backup, but it's slow to build for all lanes. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. on capitol hill, there's mixed reactions to president elect donald trump's cabinet selections. embattled u.s. house representative matt gaetz has resigned from congres. this follows him being selected for u.s. attorney general. this is in the trump administration, and it comes amid the halted house ethics investigation into gaetz. meantime, one time presidential candidate himself, robert f kennedy jr, is trump's pick for secretary of health and human services today in the bay's brie jackson joining us from washington this morning and brie lawmakers on both sides really weighing this. but some people are wondering if both men will be able to survive the senate confirmation hearing. that's right. good morning marcus. so let's start with matt gaetz. sources tell abc news that gaetz has been calling senate republicans, asking them about his chances to be confirmed. and this comes as president elect trump unveils
6:04 am
another cabinet pick that's also facing a lot of backlash. you welcome the president of the united states, president elect trump, announcing more picks for his administration, choosing north dakota governor doug burgum to head the department of interior. we're going to do things with energy and with land interior. that is going to be incredible. trump also selecting robert f kennedy jr to be his next secretary of health and human services. if you like health and if you like people that live a long time, it's the most important position. rfk jr. bobby. while the 70 year old has been a vocal critic of covid vaccines and childhood immunizations, he told nbc news last week that he would not block any vaccines. are there specific vaccines that you would seek to take off the market? oh, i'm not going to i'm not going to take away anybody's vaccines. and i've never been anti vaccine. some lawmakers are
6:05 am
skeptical. i'd like to see more of his opinions, more of his more of his thoughts on different matters. but the anti-vaccine mantra scares me a lot. there are also concerns about the president elect's choice for attorney general matt gaetz. he resigned from congress this week, bringing an end to the house ethics committee's investigation into sexual misconduct, illicit drug use and other allegations. gaetz has denied any wrongdoing. amid growing calls for the ethics report to be released. well, my guess is at some point it gets out there. some senators want details from the ethics committee now to see if there is any damaging information. others say let the confirmation process play out, and the full house ethics committee was expected to meet today to discuss, among other things, whether to release the report on a years long investigation into matt gaetz. but that meeting has been canceled. marcus. all right. brie jackson in washington this morning. brie. thank you. well, some local health leaders are
6:06 am
raising major concerns about trump appointing robert f kennedy jr to lead health and human services. ucsf infectious disease specialist doctor peter chin-hong is among them. he cites rfk jr. s extensive criticism of vaccines, including covid injections and child immunizations, which he fears may make it harder to bridge america's growing mistrust and vaccine messaging, not to mention the potential added health risks. secondly, by controlling the fda and the nih and specifically that oversees a lot of research that continues to go on. so if you're going to cut research on vaccines, for example, i'm very, very worried about the next pandemic. if we're going to see one. leaders in san francisco's gop, meantime, support this election. party chair john dennis says he's excited to see the old systems in washington be disrupted. mourners are holding a vigil tomorrow for voters swept out to sea in the north

bay happened earlier this month when five people were crabbing in bodega bay and their boat capsized in rough waters. a 13 year old boy did survive. he later spoke to nbc bay area about the tragedy. search teams never found his father, his uncle and two cousins. a vigil is scheduled for tomorrow at 6 p.m. at westside regional park on west shore road. new this morning, the city of san jose is taking an aggressive new step to crack down on rv dwellers. this week, it launched a new pilot program to count and monitor the location of inhabited oversize vehicles. it's results are posted on a real-time map. the city cites environmental and safety hazards for the latest crackdown, with the goal of using the real time data to help identify areas of highest concern and establish towaway zones in the most impacted neighborhoods. leaders also say the city is boosting its push to offer more safe parking sites to take vehicles off city streets.
6:08 am
let's take a live look out in dublin this morning as the sun begins to rise. look at that. it's so beautiful out there. very fall like. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking what we can expect weather wise. so certainly cold out there, but beautiful start. yeah, it is a nice start. and we're going to see a lot of sunshine today. now that the spotty showers that we had moving through yesterday is moving out of here. you can see the rain staying off the coast and pushing to the south, as well as some light snow for the sierra. but this system is still enough to build up some dangerous waves near our coastline today. the high surf advisory continues until tomorrow morning. some of those waves breaking over 15ft. we're seeing 17 foot waves right now and santa cruz. so that also creates those conditions where you just want to stay out of the water for today, as well as those sneaker waves and for the inland areas, we are going to see temperatures in spots like concord up to 62. morgan hill will be in the upper seconds, and for the north bay, we'll see napa up to 62 degrees. it will be a cooler than normal day, but
6:09 am
at least it will be sunny and we'll see more of this weather into tomorrow. so i'll be tracking the changes coming up in a few minutes. mike's been looking at gas prices to see where you can fill up for less. yeah, folks might be thinking about a little more driving for the weekend, so let's check with the livermore, which has had the lead. it's been leading our list all week. we again call out 341 is the best price. like yesterday, that would be diamond gas and mart on south front road. next up is our north bay getaway. your getaway. fill up there will be the low in solano county. fairfield got 369 at bond fair market on walters road. last price listed here is for the south bay and san jose. we've got a good deal of 381 at great gas on stevens creek boulevard. you check those changes and maybe take it to your advantage. gasbuddy.com on the roadways. we do have a new issue over on the peninsula. i'll take you to el camino real, where the local law enforcement has told us to avoid the area right around middle road. a lot of activity. so avoid el camino around middle. the freeways themselves, though, coming past el camino or coming through palo alto, menlo park along the
6:10 am
peninsula are moving just fine as we do look at the rest of the bay. we do have the slowing in castro valley as well. there is a problem for eastbound 580 as you get over toward grove, still blocking your two left lanes. back to you. thanks so much, mike. the app, formerly known as twitter, experiencing a whole new exodus. as of this morning, x is using your data to train its artificial intelligence. so at 625, the growing backlash making some users opt out. but first, we are helping to kick off our nourishing neighbors food drive to help our local food banks fill the need that we are feeling in our communities. we have the relaxed crew here helping us. we have some school kids from newark and we're going to tell you where you can turn your $10 into 20 meals. you're watching today in the bay
6:12 am
6:13 am
half a million people a month, but they can't do it without your help. today in the bay's kris sanchez joining us from the safeway in fremont, kicking off our nourishing neighbors campaign. good morning to you, kris. good morning to you, laura. you mentioned half a million people a month. and that's just one of our big food banks in the bay area. and they are all feeling the pressure. so this is the time when they're really calling on our generous spirit and trying to get us to
6:14 am
donate so that they can feed the need. the rest of the year, i have karl schroeder here, division manager for safeway. this is a lot going on in your store early. why do you invite us here? well, we're glad to be here with you again. now, the 15th year, we've been partnered with nbc. and, you know, in safeway, we're committed to having an impact on the communities that we serve. and there's a great need for food insecurity. and i love being in the store this time of morning. all the activity like we have in the bay area right now, we have 30,000 employees working around the clock, getting ready for our customers to come in and shop and provide food for their family. and we're glad to provide a way for our customers to help their neighbors that might be in need by simply donating at the check stand. and 100% of it goes to the food bank. now, as you mentioned, you know, we've been doing this for 15 years now, and you learn things over the process you guys are really good at, you know, making things stretch and at
6:15 am
making it easy for people to give. yeah, it's super easy. and our, our check stands, our checkers in particular are happy to do this. they actually compete with each other. there's a passion around it. and so we track it. and as you know, last year working with you guys, we raised over $4 million. there's over 8 million meals in the bay area. so it does a lot of good. i know this time of year customers that are shopping, it's hectic. it's busy. and we they want to help, but maybe don't know how or don't have the time. and there's tear pads at the check stands. they can tear it off and hand it to the cashier, or just simply ask the cashier to bring up a donation and this is possible at any one of your locations. not just the one that has the music and the kid volunteers. yeah, we don't normally have a band in our stores at six in the morning, which is great. yeah, all across the bay area is 167 stores that are participating, and our are thrilled to make it easier for our customers to help their neighbors. and it stays here in the bay area. right. 100%. yeah,
6:16 am
all across the bay. and we love that. food banks are great partners. they work so hard and they make it easy for us to help them. so it's a great relationship with the three of us, really. well, we appreciate you letting us come in. and i know that in the years past we've had marching bands, we've had all kinds of activities. so we appreciate you letting us bring in the chaos in order to, you know, try to get that message out. there's a lot of joy around food. that's our mantra. and so we're glad to spread the joy and help our customers spread the joy to their neighbors. all right. so half a million people in in santa clara county, a million meals. alameda county, it's 1 in 4 people are suffering from food insecurity. so the need is clearly there. and i'll borrow your tear sheet, sir. $10. you scan it at the register so you don't have to put anything in your cart. you don't have to wander around the store with items. you just click. they just scan that and then you make a donation. every $1 is turned
6:17 am
into two meals. so for the price of a, you know, you could buy something like this for $1, $2, or you could buy full meals. if you make the donation in cash. so we are going to be out at the rivermark safeway in santa clara, also a lovely store. carl and marcus and i will be out there on saturday morning. if you're watching kira klapper, we will be with you having your coffee in the morning and of course, nourishing neighbors kicks off today and tomorrow. but it continues all the way through the end of the month and up to christmas, so hopefully you can find a little bit of extra change in your purse and you can make a donation. yeah, a little goes a long way. i love the music too. wouldn't that be nice? like every time you're shopping now? yeah. shout out to the relaxed crew and to saint edwards. these kids got up early, i love it. they look so nice. they're here from newark. that's fantastic. it's just such a great representation of our community. it really is. all right. thanks a lot, chris. it
6:18 am
is 617 right now. brat girl. summer making a fierce return this week on on snl. yeah, technically we're in autumn, right. but that brat summer feeling continues as pop superstar charli xcx is pulling double duty over at snl. but she might need to expand her vocabulary just a little bit. look at what i'm talking about. take a look. okay, i have this like, crazy rash bra. i know. totally, but do you mind if i show you a bra? sorry. overshare. bra. bless you. bra. bra. wait. what? brat! oh, that makes sense. brat. i'm sorry. i don't know what you're saying. it just sounds like you're repeating the word brap. brap brap brap brap brap brap brap brap brap brat. i never thought of it like that. brat. yeah, i feel like i still don't understand what brat means. but you will. babes. that was really good. i totally got what she was talking about. all right, look, you can catch the brat girl on
6:19 am
snl tomorrow. it airs at 830 right here on nbc bay area. if you miss it, don't worry. you can catch the encore coming up right after our newscast at 11. and that encore comes up at 1130. there you have it. they've had some good shows lately. not that they've had it in a little content, but so kari brat. okay. maybe not for everyone. whether, you know, i was going to say that, you know, if we're talking midwestern guy and brats. brats. oh, i love brats. yeah, you get some brats, we'll get some beer. deli mustard. yeah. that's good. i feel that i'm just like scott is always adding that content. okay, let's get started. this morning. i have a really cool shot to show you as we get a look at this live view over dublin this morning. look at the sunrise. oh it's nice. and we are starting out with an orange sky. some clouds in the mix and it's going to be really nice. get those cameras ready and you may also capture a shot of the
6:20 am
full moon, as just before it sets over the golden gate bridge. i'd love to see those shots as well. now the gravitational pull of that full moon is giving us now our king tides. so we're going to see that coming up late morning for all of these areas shaded in green. it's one of those areas where you see it where those low lying coastal trails, some of the tributaries to the bay, a deal with some higher than normal tides. so watch out for that this morning and the next several mornings, our high temperatures today headed for the upper 50s. 58 for a high today in milpitas and 62 in gilroy. these temperatures are cooler than normal, and we stay in the 50s today in vallejo and as well as livermore and pleasanton, 62 for a high today in oakland and 57 degrees in half moon bay. san francisco in the upper 50s to low 60s 62 downtown and for the north bay it will be 62 in napa and 55 in ukiah. as that fog lingers. the big story this weekend will be how cold it will be, and whether
6:21 am
or not you want to turn on the heater, add some extra blanks to the bed. it's only going to be 33 when you wake up tomorrow morning in santa rosa, and also some mid 30s for the tri-valley down to the south bay. san martin tomorrow morning, 35 degrees. it's also going to be very chilly again on sunday morning. not much of a change, but when we get these cold nights we start to see those fall colors really popping. those cooler nights enhance the color, and we start to see those brighter reds as opposed to those warmer nights where we get a more dull color and the rain holding off, except for a very quick shot of some scattered showers on sunday. next week we'll have a better chance of rain next friday, so until then, not seeing a lot of big storm systems coming in cold mornings and cool afternoons with a mostly sunny sky and also cool in san francisco. mike tracking a crash. what's the update? yea, i don't have to track it anymore. kari because it just cleared from lanes. good
6:22 am
recovery starting right now. eastbound 580. still slow from the castro valley. y heading over toward the dublin grade. but again, we should have pretty quick recovery as the rest of your commute builds in your typical pattern. not a major issue. the backup is, though, at the bay bridge toll plaza. of course, we've got more news, weather and traffic comg upin from laminate and vinyl to tile and wood, floor & decor has more options for pros... homeowners... and anyone looking for the right look... at the right price. your next beautiful space... is at floor & decor.

and cool day and the king tides will be an issue with some of the low lying areas around the bay, as well as the coastal flooding that we'll see as we head through this morning. through monday, and the north bay and some of the inland valleys will see a freeze warning starting tomorrow morning. as our lows dip down below 32 degrees. today we're headed for 62 in novato. it will be 57 in fremont and 59 in dublin. overall, a cool day. keep the jacket on and maybe add an extra blanket to the bed for tomorrow morning. we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. thanks, gary. well, this morning the controversy over a trans athlete on the women's volleyball team over at san jose state university is heading to court today in the bay's. bob redell joins us live from campus this morning. a lawsuit being filed now. bob. that's correct. good morning to you, laura and marcus, the co-captain of the women's volleyball team here at san jose state and assistant coach and ten other athletes from five other universities are party to
6:33 am
this lawsuit. they have filed this 132 page lawsuit. you should be able to see it on your screen against the mountain wes, the mountain west conference, the csu system and the head coach and two administrators. it is asking for a judge to approve an injunction to prevent this transgender player on the women's volleyball team here at san jose state from taking part in an upcoming conference tournament. tournament. the issue of athletes biologically born male who transitioned to female and play women's sports has been part of the national conversation in recent years. recently, with president elect trump even weighing in brooke slusser. she's the co-captain who is part of this lawsuit. she spoke with fox news earlier this week. so it's amazing that other teams in the conference can stand up and just say, no, we're not doing this. and yet our school is still okay with having one person on our team that's causing all of these issues. it's disappointing that it's come to this point because there's really been failure at every level of leadership. that

was marsha smith. she's a former ncaa champion swimmer and the co-founder of the independent council on women's sports, which is financially backing this lawsuit. she says some teams forfeited games against san jose state because of the transgender player. she wants those forfeit losses removed from those teams records, and for san jose state to forfeit any games that they won with a transgender player. in a statement, the mountain west conference said, quote, the mountain west conference prioritizes the best interests of our student athletes and takes great care to adhere to ncaa and mwc policies. while we are unable to comment on the pending litigation of this particular situation, we take seriously all concerns of student athlete welfare and fairness. san jose state issued a very brief response. we received the complaint and will review and respond appropriately. we have no further comment at this time due to this controversy, san jose state has provided extra security for the team at home and away matches. tomorrow, the women's volleyball team here at san jose state is set to take on

colorado state. reporting live here at san jose state university. bob redell today in the bay. all right. thank you very much, bob, for the latest details. there it is, 634. tensions are running high in the south bay. in a packed hearing surrounding looming school closures. dozens attended last night's public hearing for the alum rock union school district, one of several bay area school districts facing some tough decisions. the board last night presented its list of recommended campus closures. the district is now facing a $20 million budget deficit and dealing with a decline in enrollment. parents fear their concerns are not being heard. i hope that they listen to us, but honestly, i don't have too high hopes because the district has not been transparent for years, and i don't think this is going to change much. here is a complete list of schools facing closure donald j. meyer, horace cureton, lindale and sylvia
6:36 am
castle elementaries. one middle school is on the list. schiff, joseph george and two academies. aptitude and renaissance. other schools are listed for consolidation. a final vote is scheduled for december 2nd. we also need to take time to take a moment to correct our misreporting of this story. yesterday on today in the bay in our preview, we inadvertently listed a group of schools considered for closures in a separate south bay school district. 635 right now, and while the rest of the bay area experiencing some mild temperatures this weekend forecast in san ramon calls for below freezing on the ice. that is, you're looking at some of the young performers. they're practicing for tonight's official grand opening of the kristi yamaguchi holiday ice rink at center city. bishop ranch. the rink is slightly bigger than years past, as it returns for its fifth year in a row. bishop ranch leaders say that anticipation for the ice skating this holiday season is building. it's something that now resonates with san ramon. and, you know, a lot of our
6:37 am
community, our members, rely on it. they look forward to it. a lot of the kids and families love to come and hang out here. it brings a special event to the center and everybody just enjoys it. our own mike inouye will join kristi tonight at six to cut the ribbon on this year's ice rink. the rink is open daily with sessions throughout the day through january 5th. now there are few breaks for the holiday sprinkled in there, but you can buy those tickets by visiting city center, bishop ranch, dot com. a bigger rink this year to do all their tricks. more space for me to fall. yes. do they have the little penguin thing that you push? they probably do for the little kids, though. come on, a little kid at heart. meteorologist kari had experience. exactly. so you're tracking the forecast for tonight? yeah. it's going to be cold out there. i know mike is a little concerned about how chilly it's going to be. we will have to layer up, and our temperatures start out at the ribbon cutting at 52 degrees and dropping down to the upper 40s as the night goes along. so yea,
6:38 am
ice skating weather. now as we look at some things to do around the bay area, we have the diwali celebration tonight in san francisco that starts at 5:00. and there it's also going to be cool with the temperature at 56 degrees, dropping down into the low 50s with a breezy wind, and also for the warriors game tonight, it's going to be very chilly out there. thrive city if you're inside the chase center, you won't have to worry about it. and then also a little bit of time in the night sky enjoying some time to look up. we will be able to see at least a few meteors per hour, possibly 15 to 20. if you have a good view of the entire night sky and you don't have to worry about any clouds getting in the way and looking at our forecast for the 49ers game on sunday, we have some great football weather, a little cool, but that's what we're supposed to see for those football games in the fall. and then looking at sonoma valley this weekend, it will be in the low 60s for today. a mix of sun and clouds,
6:39 am
and just as fast as it warms up, it cools down. these overnight lows drop down to the upper 30s. and then for santa cruz, if you're going to the beach, it will be sunny, but very chilly. and mike, now you have an update for state route 82, right? some folks might wonder, what is that? that's el camino real. it's officially state route 82 on the peninsula. menlo park pd did update us the crash. the traffic issue for the northbound direction of el camino has been cleared right around middle avenue. an interesting note. there's a safeway right there. that's where raj, janelle and i will be tomorrow morning. as part of that nourishing neighbors campaign, we talk about. also, starting tonight through that same area, we have to remember there will be delays for 101 between san mateo and palo alto. they're doing work on that median this weekend and the following weekend. a complete closure, though, here, not just one lane, but all lanes across that rio vista bridge will be closed off starting tonight. here for that 55 hour closure. and the long reroute for folks would normally take that bridge through the delta. right now, though, the slowing for highway four is just your morning
6:40 am
commute, which is a friday. typical pattern slowing into concord. and then at the bay bridge toll plaza. back to you. thanks, mike. 639 while winter storms last year wreaked havoc on capitola, one iconic bridge made it through safe and sound. new at 6:00. why leaders there still want to replace it, and the long road ahead for its proposed redesign. and we will update you on the latest name, some of them controversial, that president elect trump has named off. let's go to the big board. interesting situation here. the head of the fed has said the economy is doing well enough. there's no rush to rate cuts. and clearly wall street doesn't like that. plus, the economy good for a lot of people, but not so great for some of our friends and neighbors in the bay area. we are kicking off our nourishing neighbors campaign to help our local food banks make sure they have what they need to help some of our community members out. we'll tell you how you can do it right at the cash register at your local safeway.

welcome back. we'll some in washington were already reeling from president elect trump's choice of matt gaetz as attorney general. and then a new announcement scott mcgrew trump would like to see robert f kennedy jr run health and human services, right. which put him in charge of things like the centers for disease control, food and drug administration.
6:44 am
rfk jr has claimed that vaccines cause autism. they don't. he has suggested 5g telephones are a form of mind control. covid was designed to spare jewish people and questioned whether hiv causes aids. kennedy was at that first america first party at mar a lago last night. president elect trump called him out from the podium, warned him don't get too famous. there's only room for one guy at the top. and i just looked at the news reports. people like you, bobby, don't get too popular, bobby. you know you've reached about the level. now we want you to come up with things and ideas and what you've been talking about for a long time. and i think you're going to do some unbelievable things. nobody nobody's going to be able to do it like you. now, there have been a string of controversial picks at the top of course, matt gaetz to be the top cop attorney general. more about gaetz in a minute. tulsi
6:45 am
gabbard is top spivey, though her critics worry she's been influenced by russia. pete hegseth as defense secretary now rfk jr to supervise the nation's health. many in washington, on both sides wondering, will the senate actually confirm these candidates? candidates, especially gaetz, who is under investigation by the house ethics committee on accusations of improper relations with a minor, drug use and other issues? a report on all that was supposed to be released today, but may not be because gaetz resigned suddenly. or is this some kind of strategy? nominate someone you know won't be confirmed. so you can slip someone in that you really want on the job. here's former speaker and possibly, you know, gaetz's archenemy, california's kevin mccarthy. the choices are very good, except one. look, gaetz won't get confirmed. everybody knows that. you say gates will not be confirmed. why bother with the nomination, then? well, you could talk to the president, but it's a good.
6:46 am
it's a good it's a good deflection from others, but it also gives. i'll let it stand with that. elections have consequences. he chose matt gaetz matt will come before the committee and he will be asked hard questions. and we'll see how he does. what do you make of the pick? i voted for a lot of people. i didn't like gaetz when he was a congressman, led the fight to block mccarthy from becoming speaker, causing the republicans to call vote after vote, though gates had no alternatives to offer, mccarthy did become speaker, at least for a while. less controversial picks trump has named his own defense lawyer as the next deputy attorney general, and north dakota governor doug burgum. burgum rather you remember him. he ran against trump in the primaries as secretary of the interior and elon musk, who is in charge of the so-called department of government efficiency, has put out a call for what he calls super high iq, small government revolutionaries to work with him. 80 hours, 80 hours a week on cost cutting. laura, thank you very much. scott. will new

at 6:00. an iconic bridge in capitola may soon be getting a makeover. that's because engineers say it poses major flood risks. the stockton avenue bridge opened back in 1934, but some argue debris buildup along two piers at the base of the bridge can pose a huge flooding threat. city leaders are now considering replacing the bridge and removing the piers. the first step will be a series of community outreach sessions. well, we are moving the bay area forward. nourishing neighbors is our annual campaign to help our local food bank serve our communities when they especially need it. yeah, and it kicks off this weekend. today in the bay's kris sanchez joining us from the safeway in fremont this morning on to how take $1 donation and turn it into two full meals. it's like magic, marcus. the way that our food banks take that $1 and turn it into two meals for
6:48 am
our community members who need a little extra help. it's just remarkable. but our food banks can't do it without your help. so we've made it very easy for you to make a donation right at your safeway cash register. so as you are checking out, you don't have to put anything extra in your basket. you just grab one of the tear sheets. they scan the code right there, and for $10 you have now made a really big impact in your community. so how big of an impact do we need to make? that is a good question for liz gomez from our alameda county community food bank. this is we're not seeing a need going away. we are not, unfortunately, in alameda county. we're estimating that we are serving 1 in 4 alameda county residents who are experiencing some level of food insecurity. this includes children, adults and seniors who are just having a tough time stretching food budgets. so it's definitely a critical time for us this holiday season. but really throughout the year and this is the time that you really people
6:49 am
say like, oh, we're helping for the holiday. you're not. we are helping you stretch that through the rest of the year. that's right. we are providing over 1 million meals every week. and again, this is going through all sectors of alameda county to all of our neighborhoods. and a program like this. this campaign is really critical for us. it's really essential for people to step up and donate, right. because every donation will help stock our shelves for the holiday season and beyond. so every donation really does matter. we do like that physical act of putting something in a barrel or delivering a turkey, but really, the best way to maximize your your donation is to give a financial donation, because you guys can stretch it through, you know, bulk buying and rescued food that you get from retailers and such. correct. you know, every dollar that is donated, we're able to convert it into $2. so, you know, it's multiplying the giving. right. and like i said, every donation really does
6:50 am
matter. i'm really counting on community support today. and really throughout the year throughout the year. so, you know, we have a lot of volunteers who help with this program. we have our school kids here from saint edward's school in newark. we have the relaxed crew providing a little ambiance, but really, you don't have to go to one of the safeways where we are going to be over this weekend. you can go to any of your local safeways around the bay area, and there are more than 100 of them. so marcus and i are going to be at the safeway store in santa clara. the rivermark store, tomorrow morning with kira klapper. during that morning news. we know you like to drink your coffee with her in the morning, and this campaign starts today and tomorrow. but it will continue all the way through christmas day. and as i was saying earlier, this is a gift that you give yourself because you are providing two meals per dollar and you don't have to decide what the meal is. you don't have to ask everybody, what do you want for dinner? you just pay the money and the food bank will take it from there. so
6:51 am
hopefully you can find a little extra money in your wallet and in a little extra motivation in your heart. and you can help our community members through the holidays and the rest of the year certainly need it too. all right. thank you chris. it's such a great event. all right. we're talking about having to bundle up this weekend though. yeah. when the doors open in safeway we're standing right there in the front. you feel that breeze. some of the leaves come in too. we are going to have a cool weekend. here's a live look in san rafael as we are getting started. a cool morning, but it will be even colder over the next few mornings. it's 43 right now. here, but i think by tomorrow morning it will be in the 30s. and as we take a look at our trend, it will be in the upper 50s by late morning and a lot of sunshine. now that we are seeing the rain off the coast and heading farther to the south, it will be an all clear day. no significant rainfall coming our way. so let's check in on the drought. that's not just affecting california, but is affecting much of the country right now. we have seen the drought expanding and even for
6:52 am
the east coast, they've had a really bad drought that's been causing leading to some of the wildfires that they're seeing for parts of the northeast, for our area, we are abnormally dry after a really good rainfall season last year. we are going to start to see those dry conditions coming back. if we don't get any significant rain soon and seeing some of the extreme drought from arizona starting to creep into southern california here at home once again, we are abnormally dry, which is not yet a drought, but we may get there if we don't get some big storms soon. temperature wise will be in the upper 50s low 60s. this is cooler than normal for this time of year, only 61 today in walnut creek. our next few mornings will be much colder and by tomorrow morning we're waking up to those lows in the low to mid 30s in the north bay. and really not much better on sunday as well. so very chilly temperatures behind the cold front that's dropping in now and only a little bit of rain here.
6:53 am
it mostly looks like the coastline. parts of the north bay could see some spotty showers. we are dry as we go toward much of next week with the exception of the north bay. seeing that rain and then eventually it spreads into the rest of the bay area by next friday. so once again, not a lot of rain in the forecast until the end of next week. until then, it's just going to be cool, dry and sunny for the next several days. and mike, you're looking at a quick bridge check. yeah, we'll check the bay bridge toll plaza. all lanes are filled in, but there's good movement. and so this is not unusual for a friday. a smooth flow of traffic on the approach through the maze, a little slowing now for berkeley coming out of richmond. and the richmond bridge sees a build in the volume as you approach the toll plaza. no incidents, just there. same thing for the drive across highway 37, which bridges you over toward novato. a little slowing toward the san mateo bridge south 880 a crash moving to the shoulder. back to you. thanks so much, mike. it is 653 happening now, as expected, california's coastal commission is approving the plan to build a massive seawall along san francisco's oceanfront. the 3200

foot wall would help protect a sewage tunnel running along the southern portion of ocean beach. the project also calls to reroute the great highway and widen the existing beach. the cost is expected to approach $200 million. opponents fear it may actually make the beach disappear. construction is expected to start in 2027 at the earliest. and we're back in just a few moments with a look at our top stories this morning, including an rv crackdown. the new measures one south bay city is taking to track long term parking, and the software, some argue, may go a step too far. but first, it is friday and here is something to bring a smile to your face. another edition of our school shout out my name is anne and this is room 108 and 109 at francis scott key in san francisco, california. and we have a message for you. good morning. bay area. you see the
