16th, we are taking a live look outside. this is safeway in santa clara, where we will soon have two very special guests appearing as we kick off our nourishing neighbors food drive. today, we'll tell you how easy it is to participate. up until christmas day and help those in need across the bay area. thank you so much for starting your saturday morning with us. i'm kira klapper cinthia pimentel has a quick look at our microclimate forecast, and you told me earlier this might be our coldest morning yet. oh yeah. and those beautiful clear skies behind you are helping the earth cool down. and we are starting the morning with a freeze warning up in the north bay, southern marin, all the way to our north bay mountains, where some of those temperatures could be in the upper 20s low 30s. but it's not only the north bay that i'm paying attention to with those low 30s, low 30s out through danville, pleasanton and down here in the south bay, we are starting off with some chilly 40s. but after that cold morning, don't worry. should be
7:02 am
a fabulous saturday. mostly sunny skies, temperatures in the low 60s will see the cloud cover rolling about later on tonight as we get ready for some spotty showers. the second half of our weekend will time it out for you. coming up in my full forecast in about 15 minutes. keir, back to you. all right cynthia, thanks. police in san francisco are on the hunt for the owner of three large dogs that mauled another dog and its owner. the sfpd responded and was forced to intervene with their guns after the vicious attack in order to protect the neighbors. today, in the bay's thom jensen reports from the fillmore district, the area around san francisco's raymond kimball playground is active with dogs and pedestrians night and day. south africa is a border. gunfire rang out in the park, and a nearby safeway parking lot. after three unleashed dogs attacked a poodle and its owner and then another person. they started mauling this medium sized poodle and i
7:03 am
jumped on the dog. police say the dogs were cane corsos weighing about 120 pounds each. three of them eaton strong saw what was happening and tried to pull the dogs off a woman and her poodle, and he says the dogs were latched on to the poodle's neck. the dog was messed up. it was a white poodle and it was covered in blood. the poodle is being treated at a veterinary hospital, but eaton says the dogs also began chasing other people near the safeway parking lot and viciously tore into one man who tried to break them up and bit his arm. real bad, ripped it up something terrible, and then that's when one of the officers shot one of the dogs, or both of the dogs, but one was dead. shortly thereafter, in the middle of the safeway lot. you can only imagine what the two people and the dog who were attacked went through. this was three dogs with a combined weight of 360 pounds, attacking them. and believe it or not,
7:04 am
people we talked to out here said they're not surprised at all. they've had their own run ins with vicious dogs off leash. there was a dog in a car that was like, unleashed and unrestrained, and he jumped out and attacked us. you and this little dog. yeah. so it's very concerning, especially with people having their dogs off leash. i don't think it's okay. sfpd says there's now a criminal investigation underway into the dog attacks and charges could follow. we're working with animal care and control to identify the owner of the dogs. and at this time, we have not made contact with the owner. we reached out to sfpd for updates on the condition of the injured man and the poodle, but have not heard back on their conditions. thom jensen today in the bay. in other news, the community is invited to join a vigil for four boaters who were swept out to sea in the north bay. it happened two weeks ago this month, when five people were
7:05 am
crabbing in bodega bay and their boat capsized in rough waters. a 13 year old boy survived, but search teams never found his father, his uncle and two cousins. the vigil is tonight at westside regional park on west shore road in bodega bay. it starts at 6 p.m. new overnight a bullet hit an airplane at dallas love field airport late last night. the incident involved a southwest airlines flight as it was departing for indianapolis. passengers were on board, but no one was hurt. southwest confirmed a bullet struck the right side of the aircraft just under the flight deck. the plane made it safely back to the terminal and was removed from service. a shooter has not yet been found. the fbi says it's only gotten worse. those racist text messages being sent across the country and here in the bay area are now evolving into
7:06 am
emails. it all started the day after the election. hundreds of black people received the same racist texts. and now the fbi says hispanic and lgbtq people also have been targeted with offensive texts and emails. the fbi said in a statement, quote, some recipients reported being told they were selected for deportation or to report to a reeducation camp. if you receive one of these messages, report it to the fbi. back here locally, the latest election returns are showing that alameda county district attorney pamela price will soon be out of a job. the most recent results posted by the alameda county registrar's office continue to show a widening gap in the recall vote. as you can see here, more than 63% of voters have voted to remove d.r. price from office, as today in the bay's pete suratos reports. d.r. price is
7:07 am
so far refusing to concede any plans to concede the latest election results are in, and they're not looking good for alameda county da pamela price. 63% of voters in the county are in favor of price being recalled from office. the yes votes outnumber the no votes by more than 150,000. recall organizers say it's clear that it's time for the da to immediately leave office. she has never really facing the reality. okay, and despite the fact that, you know, anyone have a, you know, knowing basic math, we all know that that is a done deal. and according to the latest numbers from the registrar's, there's only a small batch of ballots left to count. we have 17,000, approximately 17,000 more votes to count. the number won't close the gap, but the da says she's waiting until every ballot is counted before commenting on the recall vote. she did not comment on the recall during a thursday press conference. but in an email to supporters, she says we must wait until every vote is
7:08 am
counted in alameda county in order to determine the way forward. and during a virtual meeting with the alameda county democratic central committee. price moved to adjourn the meeting in recognition of her time as da, saying this. i would like to acknowledge the legacy of the first african american district attorney of alameda county. the registrar's office will post another update on results next wednesday, and when the votes are certified in december, the county board of supervisors will select an interim da to serve until the next scheduled election. in 2026. and recall organizers hope the community can play a role in picking the next da. someone who has experience and someone can rebuild the da office and making sure that they can continue to serve the victims and their families. pete suratos today in the bay and the ballot counting continues in oakland. not for the recall of mayor sheng thao, a majority of oakland residents have voted to remove her from office, but this is all about
7:09 am
who will take over as interim mayor in her place. right now, oakland city council president nikki fortunato bass would become interim mayor until a special election is held early next year. but the issue is she is the president of the city council, but she's also running for the alameda county board of supervisors. after the latest count, fortunato bass is now in the lead with 106 votes ahead of john bowers. if fortunato bass gets elected as supervisor, the city council would then have to pick a new president. that person would then become interim mayor. new developments. now a surprising resignation within the troubled san mateo county sheriff's office as sheriff christina corpus fights calls for her to resign. instead, one of her high ranking employees has stepped down. acting assistant sheriff matthew fox resigned thursday night. he's on the left of your screen there.
7:10 am
fox worked for 25 years in law enforcement, mostly in daly city, san mateo county. sheriff, corpus had just promoted fox to assistant sheriff in september. it's not clear why fox stepped down, but his departure comes just days after that independent report was released accusing sheriff corpus administration of lies, abuse of authority and conflicts of interest. you have to go ahead and ask yourself why is command staff continuing to leave? and i think that has a lot to do with the dysfunction that we've seen in the department that was outlined in that 400 page report. the san mateo county board of supervisors says they forwarded the report to the county district attorney, as well as the california attorney general. next week, they will consider an amendment that would allow the board to remove the sheriff, but that would have to be approved by voters in march. more than 100 sworn staff members have been have left the sheriff's office since corpus was elected back in 2022. corpus is the

is moving the bay area forward. our nourishing neighbors food drive is our annual campaign to help our local food banks serve our bay area neighbors when they need it. the most, and it all officially kicks off today. today in the bay's kris sanchez and marcus washington are joining us live from rivermark safeway in santa clara with how you can just donate $10 and it turns into two full meals. you guys, so great to see you. thanks for coming in for your sixth early morning in a row. we love it. look, it's great to be here. and as you said it right. you know, look, you can take $1, make it into two meals. that is

the power of the partnership that's going on here with safeway. nbc bay area, telemundo 48, as well as second harvest food bank. and that is so important because this is when the bay area truly shows out during the holiday season. we say this is the season about giving and so many people do, and this is the time we start, right? and we're not just talking about making sure that people have enough food on the table for the holidays. what are local food banks? gather in this season? they stretch and they make it work most of the year round. and there is a really tremendous need. 1 in 6 people in the bay area suffering from food insecurity. these are people who go to work every day and maybe just can't stretch that dollar far enough, because we all know that our prices have gone up. so we had the chief impact officer from second harvest food bank. giovanna, come on in. thank you so much for joining us. you guys really do work magic. tell the people how you turn that dollar and you're able to stretch it so far. thank you. a lot of the food we get is donated. so we get a lot of not just food
7:16 am
donations, but we also get a lot of produce directly from the farms. and we are able to buy things in bulk. we have huge purchasing power, so we couple the produce. over half of what we give out is produce along with meat, eggs and milk, etc. and the thing about it is the need is growing. and you know, we see a lot more people needing help. you're absolutely right. the pandemic is over and we are hearing that unemployment rates are low, but people are not okay. all our neighbors are not okay. 1 in 6 of our neighbors is needing food assistance right now, so we could use all the help we could get. and you get right now, you're dealing with a need that is not going away, but you're also dealing with fewer private donations. correct? that's right. so we are seeing a record level of need, and our donations are not keeping up because people think the pandemic is over. everybody is back to work. things are okay. but a lot of our neighbors are needing help. 1 in 6, like you
7:17 am
said. yeah. all right. well, look, that's the thing. that's why it's so important for us to do our part. they make it truly easy. when you come out here to safeway. so once you get here, you get to one of the cash registers and you're going to see something like this. there's a little tear sheet. you take that tear sheet, give it to the person checking you out. or if you're at self checkout, you can do it yourself. yeah. and that's $10. you don't have to do just ten. you can do more if you like if you're available to do so. and that way you're going to help so many people right here in our area have food on their table. this holiday season. and kira, as a mom, you'll you'll understand the joy of making a meal. i'd rather choosing a meal that you don't have to decide so you are buying with that $10 donation, 20 meals, and you don't have to ask anybody what they want for dinner. it's the best kind of a gift. they do it all for you here for a great cause, but it's also a fun time. it's a fun, it's easy. and you know, we've got the help here with second harvest silicon valley. we also have junior league out here. so good morning bay area. and let's get out.

head to the safeway and do your part and see marcus and kris while you're at it. thanks guys. we'll see you again in a couple minutes. we'll check back in with you. thanks. so much. we're going to go now to people in one peninsula community who say they've been pleading with their city to keep their neighborhoods safer, but to no avail. neighbors in east palo alto say drivers speed dangerously down kavanaugh drive. they say they approached the to city install speed bumps, but claim they've been waiting for more than a year for the city to take action. east palo alto's mayor tells us the changes are imminent. it took a little longer than expected. however, we do anticipate for next year in a timeline no later than six months starting in january. the residents are going to start to see those speed bumps being built, so we apologize for the delay. neighbors also are asking the city to improve lighting in that neighborhood as well. happening today a celebration on san francisco's great highway to mark the passage of measure k, which voters decided will permanently close to traffic last week. the controversial

you've really come back to you. how do we bottle this? and that's where i started to think, well, if this can do this for me, it's got to be able to do it for other veterans. the answer to that question is warriors for african wildlife, founded in 2020. since then, brad has taken five groups of veterans to africa. after some training themselves, the vets then use their military experience to teach rangers how to protect wildlife from poachers. we've started two more. they've even participated in missions to help relocate elephants or remove horns from rhinos to make them less of a target to poachers. brad says it's a way to take everything he's learned in the past and do something good with it. in the future. he says the transformation he has experienced. he now sees in others. it happens, brad says, not just in the bush, but around the campfire as well. just talking about their experiences, whether it was afghanistan or iraq, their time in the service, that they really can't talk to

at 12 p.m. at noriega and the great highway. and we continue to move the bay area forward. one of our local food banks is serving a half million people a month, but they can't do it without your generosity. today in the bay's kris sanchez and marcus washington, join us live from safeway to kick off our 15th annual nourishing neighbors food drive. hey, you two. how you doing, kira? look, we do it because it's needed out here, so you can tell a lot of folks in the bay area are really struggling right now. so that is why it's so important for us to do our part as a community there. every time you give a dollar or a donation, it's going to help change that $1 into two meals. the food banks really do magic. they stretch your dollar donation by using the power of bulk buying, and also by rescuing produce from local farms and also getting donations from our local retailers. but i have some breaking news that you don't even know. the food bank, second harvest food bank of silicon valley, right now has
7:57 am
matching funds. that is, if you make a donation, they are going to get a match from another community organization. so now instead of making a $1 donation, turning it into two meals, your $1 is going to be turned into $2. look for meals. look, do what you got to do because that is great to hear. so the thing about it is we have time to do it. we have until december 25th. but don't wait. go out and shop while you can and make that donation. 167 safeways across the bay area is going to be a place you can go inside, buy items that you would normally buy, and then make that donation to help so many people right here in our bay area. i will say those matching funds are good. through november 28th, so maybe act fast, don't wait until december 25th because if not, then the food bank is leaving three quarters of $1 million on the table. if they don't use those matching funds. so thank you very much to our partners here at safeway who make it so easy. you just have to scan your ticket at the register. you don't even have to bring it to the register because they have it right there. and i hear that the safeway employees, they have
7:58 am
a little friendly competition, and they really do like to compete and do good for the community. so thanks to them. so get out and do your part. kira, we're going to send it back to you for now, but we're just going to hear and get more people to donate. thanks, marcus and chris. so great to see you. this morning. thanks for coming out. and cynthia has one last look at the forecast before we go. should be a nice day. cool but dry. so good shopping weather to get out and help our community. that will change for tomorrow though. we are looking at some spotty rain that could be coming in to santa clara for the niners. as we go through the week, we should see monday tuesday staying mostly dry, but then we tap into some more moisture as we get on into the middle part of the week. people are going to start traveling soon, so we really got to pay attention to all the changes in the forecast as we approach thanksgiving, not only the rain there for the second half of the week, but notice how we bump up those temperatures just a little bit. i'm still wearing a coat, though for the next couple of days. even if we get into some low 70s november as we call it.
7:59 am
