river is on our way. i'll time it out. and when we can see those impacts in the 7-day forecast coming up in about 15 minutes. kira back to you. all right, cynthia, thanks. we begin with breaking news this morning. the chief spokesman of hezbollah has been killed in beirut. an official with hezbollah confirmed mohammad afif was killed in the strike sunday in lebanon's capital city. there is no official word on the death toll. this is the latest in a string of targeted attacks aimed at taking down senior hezbollah officials. but it comes as lebanese officials say they were considering a us led ceasefire proposal. hezbollah, you may recall, began firing into israel the day after hamas's october 7th attacks. one year ago. back here locally, a new report says the situation is dire and dysfunctional within the santa clara county board of education, and it could lead to financial problems that trickle down to santa clara county and its more than 200,000 students. a state

agency has been reviewing the santa clara county office of education for months. their report says the board failed to follow its own management policies for example, when the board abruptly fired county superintendent doctor mary ann dewan in early october. in a statement to the mercury news, the county school board president argues that this report came two weeks after dewan's ouster timing, which, quote, raises concerns about the process, limited scope and context included in the report. meanwhile, the san jose state women's volleyball team is facing yet another lawsuit over an alleged transgender player on their team. that player has not come out publicly as transgender. and for privacy concerns, we are not naming her. but the lawsuit claims title nine rights are being violated by allowing a transgender athlete in women's sports. the team's co-captain, one assistant coach and other mountain west athletes filed this new suit

3 to 2. san jose animal care and services needs to do more to protect animals in their shelter. that's the finding of a new audit released by the city of san jose. the city council called for the audit after multiple complaints from the community about poor conditions for dogs and cats inside that shelter. the new report found that the shelter is way over capacity. according to the audit, in july and august, there were 700 animals crowded into the shelter built for just 500, and that makes disease prevention more difficult. one animal advocate fought for the audit and tells us overcrowding can have extreme impacts on the animals. the ultimate impact is death because if animals are catching diseases and then having to be euthanized, or if the overcrowding is causing stress, especially for the big dogs, and it causes behaviors that then results in them being euthanized. so the basic result
7:06 am
is potentially death. we reached out to san jose animal care services, which says it agrees with the audit's recommendations, and it looks forward to delivering on them. meanwhile, matt mayor matt mahan says the audit indicates the shelter is over capacity under water financially and needs to expand staffing. he says the audit provides a roadmap to lead to improvements. the first known case of a more severe strain of mpox has been detected for the very first time in the united states, and the patient is right here in the bay area. today in the bay's natalie vera spoke to an infectious infectious disease specialist and joins us from the newsroom with what you need to know. doctors say there's no reason to be alarmed. the risk to the general public remains low. now, the new strain is called clade one, and the disease is usually transmitted with close skin to skin contact. a more aggressive strain of the

mpox virus has made its way to the united states, and patient zero is in the bay area. san mateo county public health says it is responding to a case of clade one mpox, a new strain that's been known to cause more severe illness and deaths than clade two. but doctors say not to worry. the risk to the general population is low. san mateo county health says the case is related to an ongoing outbreak in central and eastern africa, where the local patient traveled recently. health leaders say the illness is mild and the patient is recovering and isolating at home. the original strain was clade one back in the 70s. it was really from animals and the reason why this is concerning is that it's mutated to go from person to person. another strain, clade two, has been detected in the u.s. since 2022. the one that we saw in 2022. it's mainly confined to men who have sex

it's time for our 15th annual nourishing neighbors food drive. nbc bay area and telemundo 48 have partnered with safeway to combat food insecurity. you can see a lot of our team members kris sanchez marcus washington on the top left, cinthia pimentel on the top right. i'm there somewhere waving a sign and robert honda and other team members jessica aguirre kari hall we're out there. bob redell getting the word out at the stores across the bay area yesterday. get this we received an update in just our first day. you've helped us raise more than $123,000. that's all you. several bay area food banks, including second harvest silicon valley. this is video from there will benefit from the campaign. each dollar you donate will pay for two meals. we talked to one customer whose donation helped make this possible. thought of people being hungry is just and in our area, an affluent area like silicon valley, it's

shameful. anything we can do to donate a little here and there to help the people less fortunate? i think we should. but the bar for this year's nourishing neighbors campaign is high. last year, you helped us raise more than $4 million for those in need. that's equivalent to more than 8 million meals. there's still time to donate until christmas day. our nourishing neighbors food drive is at every safeway across the bay area, as well as andronico's markets. you can scan the code at checkout for $10 added to your receipt at your local store. just about 710. much more ahead on today in the bay. coming up, we take you live to washington, d.c. for our weekly interview with kristen welker, who has a

the house ethics committee, as well as robert f kennedy jr, who is known for spreading misinformation about vaccines. please join me in welcoming kristen welker, moderator of meet the press. hi, kristen. great to see you as always. there has been a lot of attention on the president elect's picks the past few days. i'm wondering who stood out to you. among the names trump put forward? well, i think the two names you just mentioned, rfk jr. certainly a lightning rod. he set off some alarm bells within the medical community. of course, he is a vaccine skeptic, despite the fact that scientists have long said that vaccines are proved to be safe and effective. and so there are concerns about him now overseeing the nation's largest health agency. but i have to tell you, republicans right now, keeping an open mind as it relates to him, i think the bigger challenge for president elect trump may be former congressman matt gaetz. he resigned from congress just
7:14 am
days before the house ethics committee was set to vote on releasing a report about allegations into gaetz of misconduct, including sexual misconduct. he denies any and all wrongdoing. i had an opportunity to interview republican senator markwayne mullin of oklahoma. he said. he would like to see that report. he thinks senators need that report in order to carry out their role in an advice and consent capacity in any confirmation process. so it's going to be really fascinating to see how this plays out. privately, a number of republicans have told nbc news they think that gaetz has a really tough path to confirmation, so we'll have to see how it all unfolds. kyra, it's interesting to see both sides within the same party, and i understand you also spoke with the senator about possible recess appointments, so we look forward to seeing that interview in just about 45 minutes from now. kristen, thanks as always. we hope you join christian for this morning's meet the press.
7:15 am
she will have those exclusive interviews. as i mentioned with senator markwayne mullin as well as house minority leader hakeem jeffries. if you just stick right here with us for today in the bay, meet the press is on at 8 a.m, right after this newscast. and coming up in about 30 minutes from now, we will talk to nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston for our weekly segment. we'll take a look at those key cabinet picks. nominees by president elect trump, and whether any nominations are in jeopardy. perhaps matt gaetz, as kristen just mentioned, dozens of volunteers and students helped repair broken items to help our climate in crisis. it was part of the fix it fest at king middle school in berkeley. the event was the second of three planned community workshops. the idea is to help keep broken items out of landfills and empower people to fix their own things. volunteers are so-called repair coaches, helped repair clothes, bikes, toys and more. students were also nearby to
7:16 am
check in on attendees and assist the volunteers. organizers say the community turnout for this event and the one before it, has been impressive. well, the first event we had at willard a couple of months ago, we had over 100 people come to the event to try to repair things. we're also getting close to 50 volunteers coming to either work at the event, or be a repair coach and help people fix their items, so that combined is an amazing response. i was so impressed and so happy to prepare for yesterday's event. students got in-class lessons about basic repair skills like sewing, patching a bike tire. the next fix it fest is in february. i think i need to go to that. the san francisco 49ers, meanwhile, showed their pride in more ways than one. the team hosted its second annual drag brunch yesterday, organized by lgbtq plus employees. fans were encouraged to come and celebrate pride and the niners, the team
7:17 am
used the opportunity to debut an exclusive pride themed collection of shirts and hats with a rainbow design. some of the team's lgbtq plus employees helped design the collection themselves. apparently, the 49ers were the first ever nfl team to have its own clothing line, and now it's the first team to refresh it with a pride twist. san francisco's sketch fest is out with this year's lineup, and tickets go on sale today. among those taking part this year, kevin pollak, phil rosenthal as well as bill murray and his blood brothers. there will also be a special tribute with peaches christ for tim curry from the rocky horror picture show. this year's event runs from january 16th until february 2nd. we were able to talk to the festival co-founder david owen, who tells us the festival is a way to bring everyone together. i think when times are hard, it's also very important to laugh. i think laughter is crucial for people's

physical and mental health. and so we i like to think that we provide an escape and a distraction and a wonderful evening out. performances are happening at several venues across the city, including cobb's comedy club, the gateway theater and the great american music hall. you can find more information online at sf sketchfest.com. well, happening today. thousands of runners are lacing up their shoes for the berkeley half marathon. the 13.1 mile race begins shortly after 730. this morning. this is video from previous years. the course starts at milvia street downtown and winds through some of berkeley's most scenic areas. runners will cross the finish line at civic center park on martin luther king jr way. heads up there are some road closures because of the race, so if you're driving in or around berkeley. here's a look at what you need to know. i-80 exits at university avenue are closed, so

50s for a lot of us, a few 60s start to pop up towards livermore and down into the south county in those low 60s, but it is the showers that we await another event going on down here in the south bay seahawks and 49ers. i would also wear another layer under the jersey, bring the jackets and some closed toed shoes as we see cloudy skies and temperatures only in the low 60s there continuing to turn even cooler as we go on into the evening hours down here in the south bay awaiting that shot of rain. so let's time it out for you. we go on into the early parts of the afternoon, could see some sprinkles up there in the north bay. it will come winding down into parts of the peninsula and the east bay around our late dinner time, and into the south bay. when we're getting ready for bed, we can hear some soft pitter patters and that will be it. monday looks to be sunny, breezy and clear before we get ready for even heavier activity going on into the middle part of the week, so people are going to start getting ready to wind down for the thanksgiving holiday. start traveling. here's what's going to be putting a dent on
7:21 am
our plans, at least if you're getting a week, start week heads up. start on this wednesday, thursday, friday. look at that path coming into the bay area. models are trending though a little bit to the north, so we can see those spots of yellow right around the north bay of course, into parts of the northern state where those totals. we're not going to be talking traces, amounts we could be talking possibly inches of rain. and as the days go on, we have to see how far south it pushes through into parts of the south bay. of course, we get rain shadowed when that rain does start to come. so watch here as we paint some early estimates on this. most of that painted up into the north bay, but then into the south bay. we could be looking at maybe 1 to 2in of rain, which would be pretty beneficial. i think at this point the soils can take that up. we could dampen that concern of fire weather and really get into a rainy season ahead. so 7-day forecast goes like this. seconds and cloudy

welcomed their triplets at only 27 weeks. the risks are really associated with entire body being premature. so what we need to do as neonatologists is try to make sure that we protect that development. so that the babies can reach their full potential. stanford children's neonatologist bonifacio explains that when babies are born prematurely, it's important to protect their development with the necessary care in the nicu and using methods such as kangaroo care. what we found here at stanford children's health is we found that even doing 20 minutes more of kangaroo care time has lasting impacts on a baby's development. at one year of age, they have higher scores in their ability to learn. this technique consists of the parent holding their baby skin to skin, something the cardona family says has benefited their little ones. mateo was the first one that i got to hold before that really, you're just touching like their hands or. but to feel his whole, like, body on top of my body, like they're so tiny

at trace amounts once again, a better shot maybe for parts of san francisco along the coast, half moon bay could see a 10th of an inch there, but we are looking at possibly higher totals as we go on into the second to last week of november. here. straight shot of an atmospheric river coming into the region right now. as far as totals, timing and who could get the best shot of it right? we're keeping it to the north bay and to the parts of the northern sierra. it could start to make its way south by around thursday, friday and bring some rain down here into the south bay. but there's the santa cruz mountains that we have to deal with, and then we get rain shadowed there. it could continue even on into our weekend there saturday for you, but this is still long days ahead. the models i wouldn't trust anything past three days, but they just keep ramping up more rain so this could verify as we go on into next weekend and start talking about thanksgiving. so seven-day forecast goes like this san francisco 50s and 60s, slightly

warmer, if you can call it that. by the middle of the week when we get more moisture in here, go into the mid 60s and our inland. seven day forecast. enjoy the dry days as we go on into today and tomorrow, because we go on into next week and we find those jackets, we get those slippery roads and we bump temperatures up just a little bit as we go on into the late weekend, late week of it. so here is kids are ready with their rain boots. i have to look for mine. yes, you can borrow some. cynthia. thanks
