sports sunday. it is presented by xfinity. you know the hit man. donte whitner. i am dave feldman. the 49ers have now blown three fourth quarter leads this season. their overall record is five and five. they have only one division win. one doesn't bode well for the tiebreaker. getting into the playoffs. and today no george kittle against seattle. all a bad scenario for brock purdy and his team hosting the seahawks. first quarter seahawks up three. nothing. second and goal. purdy runs it in from ten yards out. that's a good start. seattle goes on to kick a field goal. so san francisco takes a76 lead at the half. third quarter 49ers up ten six. second and 17 nick bosa aggravates the oblique hurt one the other day. donte this is a bad blow. oh it's a definite bad blow. the biggest games of the season green bay and buffalo are coming up next. more on bosa later. later in that quarter kenneth walker the third runs it in for a one yard touchdown.
9:10 pm
seahawks take a 1310 lead. seattle had not scored a touchdown until bosa got injured. then fourth quarter second and goal. purdy to christian mccaffrey finds jauan jennings open for the three yard touchdown. jennings was a bright spot and a little trickery on the goal line. definitely deserved to be rewarded today. final minute of the game. second and two for seattle. geno smith oh. geno smith maybe a lamar jackson type run. seattle goes on to win 20 to 17. gino's first win against the niners. kyle shanahan what do you have. extremely disappointed. i thought we had a chance to put him away. a number of times throughout the game i thought the penalties we had on a number of drives just killed us. i thought we had some good momentum and then had a penalty that kind of ended the drive on two big drives that cost us points on both of them. still should have put it away there on that last drive and had every opportunity to and missed a couple of opportunities to do
9:11 pm
that. and when we did that, we gave them a chance. and i thought our defense played great all game until that last drive. but let them hang around. and when you let people hang around, that's what happens. you know, we just got to look at the film, be real with ourselves and just try to limit those kind of things, man, because, you know, just because we had success the last couple of years doesn't mean, you know, the next play or just because something bad happens to us. we're just magically going to make make up for it. like we got to have the chip on our shoulder to go take it every single, every single play. and down and in game. so we've just got to get back to that mindset. hey dante, you know, the two minute warning that has become a warning that the 49ers are going to give up a lot of points, 36 this season. that was most in the nfl until tonight when cincinnati did it against the chargers. why dante are they so bad in the final two minutes? why are they so bad at giving up leads three times this season? how much of that you putting on the coach? what happened? what. it's multiple issues when it comes to the coaching. i thought there was
9:12 pm
some bad time management late in that game. christian mccaffrey picked up a first down on the first drive of the four minute. then they threw the ball two consecutive times and stopped the clock. so that's number one. the inability to create explosive plays. that's number two the defense. they just ran out of gas. we're so accustomed to seeing the 49ers defensive line have a plethora of talent to be able to roll them in and out. once nick bosa went out of the game, that defensive line fell apart. they ran out of gas and geno smith and the seattle seahawks you have to give them credit. they fought to the bitter end. they punched the ball in the end zone late. he didn't throw any touchdowns but he utilized his legs. great day from the seattle seahawks. the 49ers just isn't getting it done. you used to say they couldn't do things without deebo. how big a loss. not having kittle. he might be their biggest offensive player and most important with his versatility. the ability to block defensive ends, get to the second level, the yards after
9:13 pm
the catch in the red zone. he's really been the only guy to score touchdowns this season. i think not having kittle out there was probably a major detriment to this offense, and if they don't have him moving forward, it's going to be difficult to move the football. and remember, no brandon aiyuk this entire season after getting injured. all right. our must-see moment. it is presented by zenni. it is the official eyewear of the san francisco 49ers. dante mentioned it. bosa injured in the third quarter on this sack of geno smith injured his oblique last week. played through it and he thinks playing through it helped him injure his other oblique this week. afterwards he was not optimistic about his future, thinking god maybe i'll miss some time. we don't know yet. that's not official. we do know this seattle hadn't scored a touchdown, dante, until he got injured. no. and he was working the right side of that offensive line. they had some returning players from injury. they have some young players that they were rotating in. and nick bosa was bringing consistent pressure. once he went out of
9:14 pm
the game, they blocked it up mano a mano across the board and they were able to get and do anything they wanted on the outside, getting the ball quickly to d.k. metcalf, they were able to run the football and then again, geno smith was able to pick his holes in the defense and pick and choose when he wanted to run the football and ultimately scored the game winning touchdown. geno smith had never beaten the 49ers and not that he's terrible, but but the 49ers had this game. this was a game the 49ers should have win. we talked about in the beginning. how much are you putting on the coaching staff? i'm putting a lot on the coaching staff, but also on the players, and i feel like and i've been in those locker rooms, i've been in those defensive meetings. if the defense is on the field and we have the lead late in the game, we expect to close it out, especially especially with the championship standard at the 49ers have exuded for the last few years. they have to close that game out. the defensive line has to close it out during the championship years. for the 49ers, that defensive line would have attacked geno smith and this offensive line. they would
9:15 pm
have gotten him on the ground and ultimately close that game out. so i put it on the defense. ultimately, they had the lead late and they squandered it. time for our toyota red zone drive of the game. it is brought to you by toyota. niners trailing 1310 in the fourth. we want a bright spot. let's go here. we're not all negative here. seventh round draft pick brock purdy finding seventh round draft pick jauan jennings. 49ers regain the lead 1713. jennings the go to guy today dante. and he's definitely been a pleasant surprise for the entirety of the season. the ability to separate at the top of the routes. and he does it in a unique way because he's bigger, stronger, and he has more length than a lot of the quarterbacks that he's facing, and he's able to separate, catch the ball with his hands. and there's many times out there on third down where he's not expected to get open and he's continuously moving the ball, and he had an incredible play out there. it was a third and long. he caught underneath. i think he needed three more yards to pick it up. he carried five defenders onto a first down. jauan jennings is a pleasant
9:16 pm
surprise for the 49ers this year. ten receptions, 91 yards christian mccaffrey is good. he played pretty well today. do you think he's back to full was last year when he led the league in rushing. i don't think he's back to full strength. i think he still needs to work on his cardiovascular endurance and his footwork was a little bit off. there were certain plays out there where he was a little shuffly with his footwork. normally he would stick that foot and go and after he watches this, this film, he'll probably agree with me. i think he's still a little rusty. you still have to give him a acclimated td get back to peak condition. we'll take a break when we come back. lambeau field is up next for the san francisco 49ers. dante will delve into the remaining schedule and it's not easy. must wins and maybe some tough losses ahead when we come back

pick it up in the fourth quarter. bears up 1914. jordan love sneaks it in for the touchdown. packers have the lead. bears drive down the field to attempt a game winning field goal, but whoa! it's blocked. green bay wins it 20 to 19. packers improved to seven and three. they of course, will play the 49ers on sunday. and the nfc playoff picture. as of right now the division leaders the lions. the eagles. the cardinals are the only six and four team in the nfc west and the falcons. you look at the 49ers right now two games out of the seventh playoff spot. dante. and with only one division win. that's a pretty big loss today. definitely. and it's not much margin for error, especially with the green bay packers and
9:20 pm
the buffalo bills. up next on the schedule and on the road when you look at this 49ers team, they've squandered many opportunities this year. they've had six one score games and they're two. and four in those games. these are games that they typically win with a high level of execution at the end of the game, defense normally closes it out, so they've put themselves behind the eight ball. but when you look at that playoff race, there's a lot of teams that are clunked in there. the next 3 to 4 games will be very telling for the nfc, and if the 49ers can get three of the next four, maybe four of the next four, they can slip up into maybe that sixth or fifth position. all right. give me your realistic picture here dante. let's look at the remaining schedule up ahead at green bay. tough place to play. they win that or lose that i think they win that okay. at buffalo on sunday night. that's going to be a very difficult one. that's a 5051. they're going to have to play phenomenal. they're going to have to have nick bosa. so i don't know which way i'm going with that one yet. buffalo beat the chiefs today at buffalo.

could be an l i may say that if you wouldn't chicago i think that's definitely a w. the rams in the division. they lost the first match up thursday night game. yeah they lost the first matchup with the los angeles rams. but that will be a must win. and i definitely see the 49ers pulling that one out at the four and six. currently miami dolphins. as long as they don't party the night before they should be okay at miami. miami is having a down year. they can't push the ball down field. there's no chemistry between the quarterback and tyreek hill. 49ers win that one. detroit is a tough team right now. maybe the best team in football. yeah. but the scheduling late in the season and with the way that detroit is playing now and accumulating wins, they might have the number one seed locked up during that week. so they might not play their starters. so they don't play their starters. i'm definitely giving up the 49ers a w if they do play their starters. i have to go with detroit in that one. that's a

monday night game against detroit at arizona. arizona may have clinched. then it's possible and maybe could rest their starters as well when they play arizona in the final game of the regular season. i don't know if i see arizona clinching. i think that that will be a game that could possibly decide who enters the playoffs. between the 49ers and arizona cardinals in week 18, so keep that one circled and watch out for that game on your calendar. i like the optimism. listen, people could point at injuries to deebo dre greenlaw, kittle, bosa. but those are excuses for the season. but but everyone's got those yeah everybody has injuries. but the 49ers have still had opportunities to win these games. after they got that fourth down stop late and got the football back. and they went into four minute mode. that's typically when they close teams out. christian mccaffrey hit a couple explosive runs. they run the clock down. they either make the opposition use all their time issa timeouts and punt the football and make them go to
9:23 pm
long field with no timeouts. they win those games again. there's they're two and four and one score games this year that could they could easily be four and two. so there's reason to remain optimistic. don't get in one score games then you're not good at it. no score team points score a lot of points. blow a team out. we'll take a break, dante and i'll come back. put a bow on sunday sports extra presented by xfinity, and we'll look at the nfc west standings. but first, a preview of the new. up next here's gia. hey dave. hey dante. we've already seen some showers this weekend. but you're going to want to get those umbrellas ready. the updated timeline on when you could see heavier rain in your neighborhood. also, a well-known private school fires a teacher for wearing a free palestine pin. we investigate why many schools are having a hard time with free speech issues and check your refrigerators. we've got an important recall alert to tell you about the new e coli outbreak that's being linked to a california farm. those stories and more. minutes away on a

in seattle, arizona at six and four. but you look at the bottom right number there, one and three in the division. that hurts them. dante. in any tiebreaker situation it does hurt them in any tiebreaker they need to go three and oh in the next you know three divisional games to really even it out at 500. you can't lose any more division games. and that's the easiest way to make the playoffs. but all in all, when you look at the division, there's three teams that are five and five and the leading team is six. and four. so if arizona doesn't win their next outing in the 49ers do and the rest of the teams in the nfc, everybody is tied at six and four. so all in all they're not playing well. they have a lot of injuries. they're squandering close games. but they still have an opportunity to make the playoffs. and they got to travel cross-country to lambeau field a tough place to play. yeah. and they're going to have jordan love. and they have to get some turnovers off of them. win the

progressive politics. what might be a controversial cause somewhere else is often seen here as a social justice issue worth fighting for. but tonight, senior investigative reporter bigad shaban explains how one polarizing issue is pushing the limits of free speech on school campuses and workplaces in the bay area and beyond. for the first time in years, english teacher aaron donovan doesn't have any students to teach. she was fired. not for what she taught, but what she wore. a free palestine pin. how soon after putting it on to the school, ask you to take it off? i got an email the very next day. her principal at bishop o'dowd high school in oakland told her some students expressed discomfort about the pin and its negative impact on their ability to learn. donovan says the year long war in gaza and the large scale humanitarian crisis that followed pushed her to put on
9:36 pm
the pin as a sign of solidarity with students who may be grieving. but some argue the movement to free palestine from israeli occupation has also been associated with calls to use violence against israel. if the pin made some of your students feel uncomfortable, why not just take it off? i take issue with the idea that classrooms are supposed to be places where we feel comfortable. if you are learning something, you are feeling discomfort. it's hard. it's vulnerable. donovan says the school repeatedly warned her she'd be let go unless she stopped wearing the pin, but she refused to take it off. it feels weird to even just like, be talking about being fired. there are teachers in palestine who have lost their jobs not because of a pin, but because their schools no longer exist, because their students are dead. donovan says the school has a history of embracing political causes, like the black lives matter movement, and even regularly praying for those in ukraine. all of these things are deeply political, and so it's problematic when there's
9:37 pm
no really clear policy that says like, well, what is political and what is social justice and how are we deciding what things are okay to take a stand on and what aren't? it was just over a year ago when hamas attacked a music festival and surrounding villages in israel, killing some 1200 people and kidnaping more than 250 others, according to the u.s. state department. palestine's health ministry says israel's ensuing military response has killed more than 40,000 and has decimated much of gaza. the conflict abroad continues to test the boundaries of free speech here at home. earlier this year, pro-palestinian demonstrations and encampments blanketed college campuses at times leading to clashes with law enforcement. it is not tolerated and it is not acceptable. top university leaders were summoned to appear before congress, chastised over their handling,

with some ultimately forced to resign. today, schools and workplaces are still grappling with how to let students and employees express themselves without creating an environment that leaves others feeling offended or even unsafe. to me, it's sort of contrary to the educational mission of the institution to say certain political viewpoints are out of bounds. david sloss is a constitutional law professor at santa clara university, and has been tracking the impact of those widespread student protests. some institutions have since adopted new rules to limit protesting by banning encampments and restricting campus access to only students, and staff. from the university standpoint, they're trying to minimize risk of disruption, but maybe that goes too far. public universities and even private institutions that receive public funding are largely prohibited from infringing on a person's right to free speech. but
9:39 pm
private employers like your own office have much more leeway to make their own rules about what's allowed and what isn't in the workplace. both pro-israel and pro-palestine organizations report spikes in complaints from u.s. employees feeling uncomfortable at work because of their stance on the gaza war. they are working in fear. they are looking for new jobs, and in some cases, they're facing termination. zahra billoo is with cair, the council on american-islamic relations. each community wants to live in peace, and tyler gregory is with the jewish community relations council. the two groups have differing views on the war, but agree on the importance of having a respectful dialog. if all sides can't be equally heard, then they both concede it might be best to restrict all political speech in hopes of avoiding the kind of controversy involving aaron donovan and bishop o'dowd high. one way this school and any other employer
9:40 pm
can simplify things is by saying we won't allow any pins, right? we wouldn't be having this conversation if they hadn't been inconsistent. what we need to do is create an environment where those folks who are dealing with active trauma right now feel safe. bishop o'dowd high school didn't respond to our interview request, but in emails to aaron donovan, the principal said, as a private school, it has significant discretion to regulate employee speech, adding teachers have repeatedly been advised to maintain neutrality on controversial issues as professionals with positional power over young students, why shouldn't you be expected to hold a neutral position when it comes to polarizing issues? there's a difference between students knowing that you have an opinion and that you have a stand on something, and you explicitly teaching them that. and i wasn't explicitly teaching anything. it's hypocritical, she says. and confusing. that is an openly queer woman teaching at a

rob? yeah, the light rain that was there is now over san jose moving through the south bay. and it's interesting time of year where you can pivot from fire season, which will be ending for many areas in northern california, to sandbags. unfortunately, this is this is what we're going to be dealing with in the 48 hour cycle. i'm telling you, as we head towards the middle part of the week, an atmospheric river that could stall out across parts of northern california is leading some to some concerns. starting as early as wednesday. but in the meantime, we've got some light rain ending and then some chilly mornings ahead. first of two coming up tomorrow morning, then all eyes on that midweek to late week pattern. and there's a look at the light rain right now moving from the northwest to the southeast. not much left to it once we pass midnight. you see the clearing skies, and that's going to be given a boost by the wind. if you're in the north bay or the east bay already, notice those wind speeds picking up. they will be briefly gusty as we head towards sunrise tomorrow, but that is also helping to clear our skies, leading to that chilly start. wind sheltered valleys could see patchy frost in the north bay tomorrow morning, with upper 30s low 40s elsewhere. then, as we head
9:45 pm
towards the afternoon, few isolated showers around mendocino county around midday. but look at the high temperatures tomorrow. upper 50s and low 60s. so the atmospheric river pattern gets started wednesday. notice where the plume kind of hangs out. it's right up here on the north coast and it stays there wednesday thursday into part of friday. and when you see an atmospheric river stall out, that's what makes these kinds of rain totals possible. right now the estimates are especially for areas north of interstate 80. as you get into sonoma county and mendocino county, several inches of rain could be possible less south of san francisco into san jose. it will take some time, probably for that heavier rain to march its way southward. so getting into it here on wednesday, watch closely how the north bay really doesn't see any let up into early thursday. thursday afternoon and evening the rain line marches northward, some warm temperatures around the south bay and it's right there. friday into saturday we see the heavier rain transition into san francisco and san jose, and then maybe a break coming up by saturday afternoon. so the

multi-day event that we're tracking there is midweek through at least midday saturday. and i think for the north bay it will be about a 24 hour cycle potentially of some very steady rain, high rain rates at times. we'll have to watch that closely for runoff issues and burn scars for interior. northern california could find some issues as well. wind will be a factor too. we'll watch that wednesday and again friday into saturday. so things changing quickly now in that 7-day forecast. pay attention to the forecast by the way midweek into next weekend. does this have any impact on the long term forecast for this winter for the el nino? well, if it's a la nina season, it looks like a weak to moderate to one of those. you can have flooding and you can also have some drier than average years. but the more recent runs of la nina seasons for northern california have been average to above average. so maybe that's how this was shaping up. okay, thanks. okay. up next, lawrence trending up in up next, lawrence trending up in the city b y the volvo holiday sales even. perfect for wherever your little passengers want to go. i want a hot chocolate!

median rents in san francisco rose about 1%. the average for a one bedroom comes to just over $2,700 a month. it's a sign the san francisco rental market has fully recovered from the effects of the pandemic. now across the bay in oakland, rents fell by about 6% to an average of just under $1,800 for one bedroom. the two rental markets were behaving very much the same after the pandemic until now, contributing to oakland's lower prices, more supply and less demand. a bold new idea to improve education in pacifica breaks ground tomorrow. the city is tearing down these old buildings to build affordable housing, with the aim of recruiting and retaining teachers and school staff. the pacifica school district is holding a ceremony tomorrow to mark this occasion. the new sustainable housing will be built on ottestad boulevard at
