first major atmospheric river coming in, and it arrives on wednesday during the afternoon into the evening, and it looks like pretty much all of the bay area gets some rain. but then that atmospheric river starts to wave a little bit to the north and takes with it the rain just mainly into the north bay on thursday and then friday it starts to sink back down and may be more intense with some higher winds and the heavy rain continuing at least into the start of the weekend. so we're looking at some pretty significant rainfall here farther to the north, where we see the yellow. that's six inches of rainfall that we could see north of santa rosa. and then the purple shading shows about two and a half to three inches of rain. and then for areas south of the golden gate bridge, it could be more like 1 to 2in of rainfall, which once again will be our first significant storm of the season. so i'll be tracking that. we'll have more details coming up in just a few minutes. mike has a look at where you can fill up for a little bit lower today. yeah, we've i've seen local

5:20 am
looking across the region at how much rain we could see, the rain outlook shows that these areas in yellow, that's calistoga on northward, could be about six inches of rainfall between wednesday and saturday. and then for the areas in light pink, that's about three inches of rainfall. and that's much of the rest of the north bay into the east bay. we could see about 2.5in of rainfall, which is fairly significant coming over the course of 2 to 3 days. and then for the sierra, we go into the weekend with the possibility of a couple of feet of snow, and then there could be some more coming next week in total. look at this 58in of snow over the next week and a half for kingvale. so that's going to be a really big boost to getting those ski resorts open in time for thanksgiving, as well as beyond. so we're looking good here. we need the rain of course, but we don't want too much of it and we're going to be watching out for the problems that come along with that.

5:33 am
sonoma county used a mask mandate for doctors, nurses and other providers to limit the spread of viruses like the flu and rsv and bacterial infections like whooping cough. now, several other counties enacted mask mandates starting november 1st in alameda, contra costa, santa clara, san mateo and napa counties. their health care workers are also wearing a mask when they are providing care in hospitals, skilled nursing facilities and other health care facilities. we need our health care workers during the winter. the winter is the time when we see many more patients per day, and we want to be sure we have a whole and healthy workforce. now, while covid levels are low and flu levels are low in california, cases of respiratory syncytial virus or rsv, those are starting to tick up. and with the holiday gatherings coming up and travel ahead, we could still see cases on the rise. now, if you have not

folks may be leaving the area after work. getting to work this morning. we do have some slowing and there's that crash 101 at 87. there must at least be some visual impact because we see a little more slowing a little earlier around the airport. sjc, back to you. good. good to know. thanks. 540 this morning. and bart today expands its rollout of the new gates meant to crack down on fare evaders. stick around because we have that story just ahead. and the head of donald trump's proposed government cutting agency promises and extinction level event for government departments. well, maybe you need some laughs. these days. we're going to meet a comic bringing his own unique brand of comedy to a new podcast. keep it

starting out clear, and it's in the upper 40s. chilly morning with a very slow warm up today, but at least it will be sunny. you'll need that jacket throughout the day as our highs only make it into the upper 50s. we will have dry weather today and tomorrow, and then rain arrives wednesday. we'll talk about our first major storm of the season coming up. and right now i'm just looking at that flag in the lower left corner. things are pretty calm there, but we're watching for those changes, watching the changes in the commute as well. the headlights southbound through fremont a little farther north. there may be a crash or maybe two actually, reports of a hazard. we'll sort things out and i'll let you know what's
5:45 am
going on. coming up. sounds good. we'll check back with you both. it's 544 right now. president biden has given permission for the ukrainians to fire medium range american missiles into russia. and scott mcgrew the u.s. and ukraine. concerned about the massing of north korean troops on the border. yeah. with any luck, these missiles are going to hit them, right? they're called atacms, these missiles. it's an acronym ukraine has been itching to send these missiles into russian territory, though military experts say ukraine has done a pretty good job using long range drones as a replacement. so far. biden, meanwhile, has resisted giving permission as he was concerned it would cause russia to escalate the war, maybe even against nato. president biden is in brazil for the g20 conference. on sunday, he became the first sitting u.s. president to visit the amazon rainforest because the fight to protect our planet is literally a fight for humanity for generations to com.

it may be the only existential threat to all our nations. incoming president trump, meantime, has confirmed on his social media he will declare a national emergency and send u.s. troops to protect the border. state national guard already make regular appearances in texas and arizona, but active duty is different under the law, trump says 20 to 30 million undocumented immigrants will be deported. trump, standing by his proposed secretary of defense, pete hegseth, who it's been reported, was under investigation after an alleged sexual assault in monterey at a republican women's conference in 2017. no charges filed. hegseth lawyers confirmed there was a sexual encounter and that money was paid to the woman under an agreement of a confidential settlement. but the woman, they say, was the aggressor. the lawyer said, quote, this is a situation where a consensual encounter occurred and unfortunately, the woman had to come up with a lie to explain why the woman had not come back

to her husband's room that night. more pressure on the speaker of the house and the house ethics committee to release the report about trump's pick for attorney general, matt gaetz. gaetz had been under investigation accused of sexually trafficking a high school girl. at first by the justice department and later by congress itself. no charges filed there either. the speaker says the report should remain under seal because gaetz is no longer a member of congress. tesla's elon musk, meantime, who trump has named as a co-chair of a cost cutting effort, says he and vivek ramaswamy will cut so much from the budget, it will be a, quote, extinction level event. ramaswamy promises thousands in reduction in force, a government term for firings and layoffs. are you expecting to close down entire agencies like president trump has talked about the department of education, for example. are you going to be closing down departments? we expect mass reductions. we expect certain
5:48 am
agencies to be deleted outright. we expect mass reductions in force in areas of the federal government that are bloated. we expect massive cuts among federal contractors and others who are overbilling the federal government. so yes, we expect all of the above, and i think people will be surprised by, i think, how quickly we're able to move with some of those changes. now, musk has said they're going to cut 2 trillion out of the budget, but you can see here when you take out the stuff that you have to pay for, like social security, the discretionary budget is less than $2 trillion. this is important context. as we listen to musk's plans to make the whole several departments extinct. a vast majority of the federal budget goes to just three things one, two, three. and very few americans support cutting these three things. laura, a lot to follow there. thank you. scott. 548 right now, firefighters will take part in a prescribed burn starting today in mount diablo state park covers about 100 acres in
5:49 am
mitchell canyon, south of clayton. several nearby roads and trails will be closed. the burn is expected to continue through wednesday. also happening today, crews begin installing bart's next generation faregates at the warm springs south fremont station. the six foot gates are designed to better thwart fare jumpers, and they're now in use at ten bart stations, with a plan to have all stations upgraded by the end of next year. well, thousands of families will receive free meals in marin county this holiday season. this is all thanks to a food drive by the boy scouts over the weekend. i remember doing this as a kid, so each year they go door to door collecting food donations. this year they collected nearly 50,000 pounds of food with the help from marin county fire and san francisco marin food bank. the donations are now at the san rafael food bank, distributed throughout the holidays. and we here at nbc bay area are doing our part to help out our nourishing neighbors campaign is officially underway. members of our today in the bay family kick

things off with our own annual food drive over the weekend. mike inouye was up early saturday morning, flanked by janelle wang as well as raj mathai. you don't see them in that picture, but they were there. i promise you. and this is they were at the safeway in el camino real in menlo park. the group helped hand out some cool nbc bay area swag to those customers. and not to mention, look at this myself, along with kris sanchez. we were there over at the rivermark safeway in santa clara starting out the day. now we love meeting all of our today in the bay viewers this weekend. there are a total of 167 safeway's participating across the bay area, so there's pretty much one near you. our nourishing neighbors food drive lasts through christmas day, so you have some time. get out there and do that, and next time you're at a safeway, you can donate the $10 donation at the checkout. as of last night, the food drive has already raised more than $191,000, with several weeks to go, we know that your

donations really can make a big difference right here in the lives of so many people in need here in our own backyard in the bay area. nice to see. keep it going. well, turning for you this morning. let's talk about this. if you thought about connecting with a popular jewish comedian. well, if that's something you've thought about, there you go. i just learned about it. the yiddish word for complain, by the way. and it'll just be a small part of a new podcast. stars of david, which debuts tomorrow. it's hosted by comedian comedian elon gold and his co-host eli leonard. gold is also an actor, and the way he puts it, his podcast will include guests who are jewish covering topics that are universal. as elon tells our own mike inouye, even his parents are playing a role. i'm still holding the grudge that they didn't teach me our sort of language from eastern europe, and now this is payback. now they have to come on the podcast and teach me and our viewers and listeners a yiddish word of the
5:52 am
day from the shadows. eight episodes drop tomorrow. tomorrow's guests will include singer montana tucker and civil rights champion keana dvd. it's available at jewish unpacked, .com or anywhere that you find your podcast, which is everywhere. yeah. okay. have you heard about this? this friday, the highly anticipated fall blockbuster wicked finally hits movie theaters. yeah, but tomorrow night, the countdown officially hits the fever pitch. this is right here on nbc bay area. so if you care to find me, love to the western sky. yes. that is do that in studio. we're going to do that for you on thursday. just so you know, that's how i fly to work. just so you know. so look, make sure you check it out because you're going to get a behind the scenes glimpse of cynthia erivo performing. you heard it right there, high flying stunts there. and the highly anticipated defying gravity. yeah. that is probably the most popular song of the musical. tomorrow night,
5:53 am
nbc airs defying gravity. the curtain rises on wicked. audiences will be able to get some behind the scenes looks as you see right there, of what it takes to make that movie the magic of oz, bringing it to life. that includes massive construction across 17 soundstages and four backlots, leaving cast members spellbound. the scale is kind of a little hard to really wrap my mind around. i still have not processed any of it like i. this still does not feel like real life to me to be honest. yeah, yeah yeah. until until the movie comes out, i think it will not feel totally real to us. oh yeah. so wicked distributor is of course, comcast owned by universal, which is our parent company. defying gravity. the curtain rises on wicked airs at 10 p.m. tomorrow night. it's followed by nbc bay area news at 11. and make sure you tune in to today in the bay. tomorrow morning, you'll see my interview with one of the cast members, michelle yeoh. she's a part of that, so stick around for that. it's going to be a good one.
5:54 am
that is amazing though. all that goes into it. yeah, i'm glad you explained it was behind the scenes because i was like, really disappointed in those special effects. and then i realized, right now it comes to life. you know, i got a chance. now you know why she sings are. you like? yeah. and they're like, look it. that's perfect. i do the same thing. all right. kerry's got to look at our forecast. i already have my tickets for the weekend, which might be good because it might be raining. yeah. it's going to be raining off and on. and we are going to see a lot of wet weather coming our way this week. so we're starting out dry today. it's chilly and we're seeing those temperatures in the 30s in parts of the north bay mainly, but 40s elsewhere. frosty morning but will be a sunny day. and this midweek into saturday there will be our first major storm of the season coming in. we'll have to watch out for the possibility of flooding, as well as some very big sierra snow. and then looking at our temperatures right now, we're at 38 degrees in napa and it is 35 in calistoga. and we're seeing mostly low 40s for the east bay as you're heading out. but then
5:55 am
as we take a look at our highs for this afternoon, 59 in palo alto, that's kind of on the cool side. will be 59 in dublin and 60 in martinez. and tomorrow also sunny and just a touch warmer with low 60s in san jose and upper 50s for the north bay. wednesday is when we'll start to see that rain coming in. temperatures pretty much holding steady as we see the clouds that will be extending across the pacific northwest, reaching into the bay area. so first we all see the rain coming in on wednesday, but then it will start to lift back to the north just a little bit as this atmospheric river just waves across the region. and we will have some times of heavy rain. looks like thursday into friday as the heaviest rain with lingering showers continuing into the weekend and possibly early next week. so during the several days that we'll see rain off and on, the heaviest rain is just to our north with those areas in yellow at six inches of rainfall, it's about four inches for santa rosa and napa between wednesday and saturday, and
5:56 am
parts of the south bay and red could possibly see about an inch and a half to two inches of rainfall. and the sierra is going to get several feet of snow going into the next week and possibly more ahead. so we are going to see a big start to our cierra snowfall season and time for those resorts to open. here's a look at our 7-day forecast. lots to look at here. it's sunny today and mild and tomorrow it's going to be become partly cloudy. rain chances increasing on wednesday with rain off and on into the weekend and highs warming up into the upper 60s and low 70s. san francisco will have a nice quiet start to the week, but things really ramp up as that storm arrives on wednesday. back to you. all right. thanks so much, kari. well, happening now, san mateo county health leaders, they're reporting the first case of severe strain of mpox is called cloud one. officials say that the person became infected after traveling in eastern africa. that patient is experiencing mild symptoms and is recovering at home. the
