6:02 am
temperatures going from 50 degrees to upper 50s kind of on the cool side even for this time of year. so we're going to see highs cooler than normal, lots of sunshine and a light wind. tomorrow is also dry, but then by wednesday we're tracking the arrival of our first major storm of the season. i'll have a look at that timeline coming up. and mike, you have an update on that crash in san jose? yeah, we have the build of a first phase of our commute is easing off now, but we still have that crash north 101 at 87 blocking your fast lane. so there's still more slowing than you might expect. starting about oakland road, heading up past the airport and the merge with guadalupe parkway. everything else for the south bay. looking all right as far as those speed sensors go. southbound 880. there is a crash at stevenson. in fact, i heard there were two separate crashes leading to about five vehicles involved. so a spectacle. i believe only one lane might be blocked. as you travel past the scene, but that is slowing through. fremont. the crash or the disabled vehicle did clear from the bay bridge, and now it's just the morning commute. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. well, we are following

committee to release its report into allegations of sexual misconduct and illicit drug use. gaetz denies wrongdoing and resigned from congress last week. some republicans argue the report should not be released. the jurisdiction of the ethics committee is limited to those who are serving in the institution. i believe the senate should have access to that now. should it be released to the public or not? that that's i guess that will be part of the negotiations. democrats are also blasting trump's selections, including robert kennedy jr, as health and human services secretary. these nominations are insane and crazy. congress gearing up for a battle over cabinet selections in washington, brie jackson nbc news. important news. before you pack that lunch this morning. developing right now, the fda is investigating a new e coli outbreak. this one is tied to carrots, and at least one person has died. today in the bay's bob redell joins us live this

cool temperatures to start with. this storm that will be approaching for the middle of the week. as of now, we're seeing the rain across the pacific northwest. eventually, this storm system is going to drop in and we'll see. it just kind of waving back and forth across the region. so that's going to make it really hard to time out exactly when it's going to be raining. it just starts out on wednesday and just lingers over the region from wednesday into thursday, friday, saturday, sunday, monday. you see that we are going to have several days of rain off and on, and this is going to bring us a lot of rainfall that will add up day by day, and rainfall totals farther to the north, north of calistoga and up toward ukiah. the yellow that's six inches of rainfall. and that's between wednesday and saturday. it looks like it may continue beyond that point in the pink in the north bay. that's about three inches of rainfall. and then for areas south parts of the peninsula into the south bay, about two

and a half to possibly closer to three inches of rainfall. while we're getting the rain, the sierras getting the snow. and this could really help jump off the ski season and get those resorts opening right in time for thanksgiving. we're going to see heavy snow before the weekend and more coming next week. in total, there could be about two feet of snow for south lake tahoe and possibly closer to five feet of snow in some spots. so we're going to see that once again, really help start off the ski season and also give the bay area a wildfire ending season rainfall. so we're going to see this into the weekend. heavy rainfall as well as gusty winds. and our temperatures in the 60s for much of the week. and it will be cool in san francisco as that rain begins on wednesday. mike, there may be another issue on the bay bridge. yeah. kari we've been tracking this. the first one cleared at just past treasure island. things recovered on the span, but look how things are really jamming up. i've been watching. i don't see those

because of their personal stance on the gaza war. over the past year, college campuses have been blanketed by protests and encampments in response to the conflict, which has led to some universities implementing new rules to limit protesting, which some constitutional law experts believe could be regarded as an infringement to free speech. now we delve into all of this in our full investigation, which you can watch right now. that's at nbc bay area.com/investigations with the investigative unit. i'm bigad shaban. thank you bigad. we've got a lot more ahead at 630, including a new push to help teachers make it in the bay. the one of a kind housing opportunity set to break ground today. we're live at sfo. this morning. thanksgiving holiday travel forecast are out. we'll run that through with you up ahead, including when you should and should not hit the road.

holding steady around california, sonoma county is asking its health care workers to mask up in order to stay on the job during one of the busiest times of year. now, for years before the pandemic, sonoma county used a mask mandate for doctors, nurses and other providers to limit the spread of viruses like the flu and rsv and bacterial infections like whooping cough. now, several other counties enacted mask mandates starting november 1st. so in alameda, contra costa, santa clara, san mateo and napa counties, you've probably already seen your health care providers wearing masks anytime that they're dealing with patients in hospitals, skilled nursing facilities and other health care facilities. we need our health care workers during the winter. the winter is the time when we see many more patients per day, and we want to be sure we have a whole and healthy workforce. now, while covid levels are low and flu levels are also low, right now, cases of respiratory syncytial virus or rsv are
6:34 am
starting to increase. and as we know with holiday gatherings and travel ahead, we could still see those cases go up. now, if you have not gotten your covid or flu shots yet, you are not too late. but you should act quickly if you want to get one, because it takes your body a few weeks to build immunity so you can still get some protection in time for thanksgiving. now, the cdc recommends vaccination, particularly for children under five and adults 65 and older. pregnant women and all people with underlying health conditions such as heart diseas, diabetes, asthma or who are immunocompromised of the respiratory virus season. you know, we used to call it flu season. now there are more bugs rotating around that generally peaks in february. laura. all right. try to stay healthy. thanks, chris. 634 right now, the city of pacifica today takes a new step in helping more teachers make it in the bay. crews are breaking ground on a new affordable housing project. it will be located at what's

and laura, we're getting in the holiday spirit of things. i guess you can say, even with the lights behind us here at sfo, they're already red and green, but we are talking about the thanksgiving travel period. as you mentioned, it's been extended from the tuesday before thanksgiving to the monday after. so that might explain the boost in numbers. but nonetheless, it's looking like a busy time to travel. around 80 million people projected to travel 50 miles or more this thanksgiving travel period. that's up 1.7 million people from last year. 2 million more than 2019. now, of that 80 million, almost 6 million will fly domestically for the holiday. let's talk about driving to your holiday destination from that 80 million triple a projects a record 72 million people will travel by car. a lot of people, that's an additional 1.3 million travelers on the road, which also surpasses pre-pandemic levels. there's good news for those planning on hitting the road. gas prices will be lower this

year. i think we're going to see $3 a gallon national average by thanksgiving. overnight, it was about 3.7. now, last year, the national average was 3.26. so that's already lower than last year's average. there are the best times and the worst times to hit the road. as we all know, the general rule is try to get out around 10 or 11 in the morning. on the days leading up to thanksgiving, and if you're lucky enough that you can extend your thanksgiving break all the way until that monday, you are suggested advised to leave before 8:00 in the morning, or then you can wait until after 7 p.m. so it's pretty extended break there, guys. triple a and its partners do have a more specific breakdown by metro on their website. we're live at sfo. ginger conejero saab today in the bay. but if you're going nowhere, just stay in the bed and watch nbc bay area all day. yeah that's right. thanks, ginger. well, kari, you brought

it's looking a little bit more like what we expect at the bay bridge. yeah, the pattern at the bay bridge. we did have a lot of slowing in these hov lanes until just a few minutes ago. because of that disabled vehicle, whatever was causing the slowing for a short period of time across that flat section, heading over in toward the bay bridge treasure island tunnel, things have greatly improved there, and they've brought those metering lights back to what looks like your typical pace slowing through richmond, north bay highway 37 east bay. look at contra costa county highway four and now pushing down 242. there may be a new crash coming down through concord will track that. meanwhile, i want to give you a look ahead. remember that the last overnight, last night and every night through thursday, they will have this traffic control highway 37 and lakeville highway. they're working on the drainage before that rain comes in. hopefully they can complete the project again. i said through thursday. but kari is talking about those systems changing as early as wednesday, so we'll watch that area. at least one crash over at thornton for southbound 880, slowing you down in toward fremont. back to you. thanks, mike. daring rescue in san francisco. this after a man gets trapped on a cliff.

government. so yes, we expect all of the above. and i think people will be surprised by, i think, how quickly we're able to move with some of those changes, how massive will. musk has said they will cut 2 trillion out of the budget, but you can see here when you take out the stuff we have to pay for, like social security, the discretionary budget is less than $2 trillion. this is important context as we listen to musk and ramaswamy's plans to make whole departments extinct. a vast majority of the federal budget a huge amount of the federal budget goes to just three things very few americans, marcus, want to support the cutting these three things. absolutely. all right. scott mcgrew for us this morning, scott. thank you. well, we here at nbc bay area doing our part to help nourish our neighbors this holiday season. members of our today in the bay team, they kicked off our annual food drive over the weekend. mike inouye was up early saturday morning there with janelle wang and raj

that's going to go a long way. as of last night, though, the food drive has already raised more than $191,000. with several weeks to go and we know that your donations can really make a big difference in the lives of so many people throughout the bay area and their families. all right. always good to see that. you know what else is coming this this friday. yeah. so friday highly anticipated fall blockbuster wicked finally hitting the theaters. but tomorrow night, the countdown officially hits a fever pitch right here on nbc. bay area. so if you care to find me, love to the western sky. and that's when she yells, look at her go behind the scenes glimpse of cynthia erivo performing the high flying stunts for that highly anticipated defying gravity, the musical's most popular song. tomorrow night, nbc airs defying gravity. the curtain rises on wicked. audiences will get to see a little behind the scenes look at what it took to really

yeah. it's a great restaurant there in los altos okay. hey let's check the forecast for today. enjoy. today i understand some rain is coming. yeah. you want to take a little time to prepare for the big changes we have coming for the middle of the week, we are waking up to sunshine this morning as we take a live look outside in palo alto. beautiful orange hues in the sky and it is now 50 degrees there. it's going to be a cool morning and gradually seeing those temperatures rise with a mostly clear sky throughout the day. we'll only make it up to about 59 degrees there, 60 in oakland and 62 in concord. there's not much of a change temperature wise. cold mornings and some fairly cool afternoons, but we'll start to see clouds moving in tomorrow and rain arriving on wednesday. it's all a part of this system that we are seeing, this long line of clouds. this is the atmospheric river that we're going to see. that's the flow of those upper level winds that also taps into some deep tropical moisture. and that brings in for the bay area, about 50% of our annual rainfall. we see these atmospheric rivers coming in.
6:52 am
this one looks like it's on a scale of five, about a three or a four. so this is going to be a significant one. and it kind of stalls out. so it's going to just wave back and forth across the region. there will be times of rain, and then there will be times that we get a bit of a break. but the north bay is going to be in the target for the heaviest rainfall. and notice how the rain stays in the area through friday, saturday, sunday, possibly into monday. so we have several days of rain that's going to be off and on in our forecast. that begins this wednesday. as far as how much we may be seeing with at least the heaviest rainfall in the north bay, where we see the yellows. that's parts of northern sonoma county extending up to lake and mendocino counties, possibly six inches of rainfall here, and then the south bay, possibly getting about 1 to 2in of rain. so this is going to be a heavy rain maker, a heavy snow maker for the sierra and into the sea
6:53 am
about a foot and a half to two feet of snow in some spots, and a lot more coming next week, possibly. so we're going to really start to see our stormy season ramping up, and this is going to be affecting the bay area into the weekend, as well as early next week. we do have a couple of days to prepare, and that's today. and tomorrow before that rain arrives and mike, you are tracking a crash now in fremont. actually, a few crashes. we're looking over here. 880 southbound is fine over as you're approaching tesla. it's just a little farther north where we had two crashes at stevenson and another at thornton. i believe all of them are cleared, at least to the shoulder. there may still be some activity with the distraction and some slowing, but look, there's a good volume of traffic coming down out of san leandro all the way into fremont. and that's typical for the nimitz, as well as 680 showing that build and the slowing through pleasanton. but no problems for that portion of the tri-valley getting across the san mateo bridge. there's a bit of a build. so a little more slowing there. nothing major typical for the east bay as well. back to you. thanks so
