matt gaetz is now a private citizen. >> i think it would be a pandora's box. >> let's go back to the news that broke overnight, president- elect trump confirming that he wants to declare a national emergency and that would enable him to use the military. how might that work and how much would it cost? >> let me take the second part of your question first. how much would it cost? the answer is a lot of money. we cannot get super specific. it is not clear how much. there is one estimate that suggests it could be something like $90 billion a year. that is from immigration rights group which also questions the impact of the economy more broadly thing the annual gdp could take a hit because of the removal of workers, especially in the construction and hospitality industry. president-elect trump and his allies argued that this issue is so important and it was so central to his campaign that it goes beyond cost. mr. trump told nbc news right after the election that there is no price tag on this because there is no choice other than to do it. he would need congress to approve the money he needs but remember that both the house and the senate will be an

>> thank you. thanksgiving is just 10 days away. when it comes to travel, it will be a busy one. aaa is saying that it expects nearly 80 million people will be heading out on airplanes, trains and automobiles. what do we need to know to make the trip as smooth as possible? let's get to christine ramos. it sounds like a lot. how does that compare? >> it is a record. 80 million people on the move, americans on the move. that is just remarkable. these will be record breaking numbers. they are taking the train and flying. look at the numbers. when you see how much is going from last year, even more than last year. records all around. and cruises, huge. look at the number. buses, trains and cruises, up 18% versus 2019. they are basically booked solid. people want to get out there and gas prices will be lower this year. i think we will see 3-dollar a gallon national averages by thanksgiving. overnight, about 3. zero seven. >> parents can already hear their kids in the backseat

saying, how soon will be get there? as a new minivan owner, i'm so excited. >> what are the best times to the road? >> tuesday and wednesday before thanksgiving will really be the most busy. because of hybrid work, we stretched out the holiday work to be more like monday, to monday or tuesday, to monday. the worst time to drive is tuesday and wednesday afternoon before thanksgiving. the best time to drive is actually giving day. and if you are coming back, come back on the sunday either very early or wait until the tuesday after thanksgiving if you can because there will be 80 million people on the move for the holiday. pretty remarkable. it will be busy on the roads and in the airports and the train stations and on the cruises. >> spirit airlines declared bankruptcy. what if you have a ticket from spirit? >> the company said they will operate during bankruptcy and you can use your loyalty points and your tickets. you can purchase a ticket. they hope to exit bankruptcy sometime in the beginning of the year. maybe the end of the 1st quarter. you can still use the tickets if you have a spirit ways

ticket for the holiday season. to a serious care for airplane passengers during the build up thanksgiving. investigations are underway after a southwest plane was hit by gunfire while it was getting ready to take off from dallas love field airport pick a single bullet piercing the cockpit. we have the very latest. >> they think that somebody from outside the airport shot a firearm at the aircraft. >> this morning, the mystery behind a southwest airplane hit by gunfire remains unsolved. the 737 was preparing for takeoff friday night at dallas love field airport when officials say that a bullet suddenly struck near the right side of the cockpit. the pilots immediately turned the airplane around and the runway was closed. passengers on board had no idea what happened. >> the pilot came on the speaker system and said that there is a rattling outside it.

at the gate, he said that the airplane did sustain damage and so we are going to have to deplane. >> there were no reported injuries and the airplane was taken out of service. >> when i found out the bullet hit the cockpit, that hit my heart because that could have easily have hit and gone through the window. >> in a statement, southwest said they spoke with passengers and apologized for the inconvenience stressing, "the safety of our customers and crew are top priority." >> for something like this to happen in the continental u.s., the mainland u.s., is virtually unparallel. >> it was just last week when the faa put a ban on all u.s. flights to the -- haiti for months after three airplanes from spirit, jetblue and american were all struck by gunfire during the ongoing political unrest and gang violence. >> in texas, dallas police are trying to determine who fired the bullet at the southwest jet and why. >> with the airplane taken out of service, a couple things investigators are studying.

they will be looking at the bullet hole trying to to study the trajectory and see if they can find the source and hopefully the gun used. but they also will be assessing of course the airplane damage to see if or when the plain can be returned to service ahead of what we just heard christine say about it being a busy holiday travel season. >> thank you. >> good morning. >> good morning to you as well. the accommodation of the ongoing drought and windy conditions are really keeping us busy in the northeast. crews racing to contain a number of brushfire breakouts and they have finally gotten the upper hand on one of the biggest wildfires in the region along the new york, new jersey border. we will get to the forecast in a moment. first, we have more from greenwood lake, new york with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. you might be able to make out that worrying of the chinook behind me picking up water from this lake to continue the firefight.

parts of new york remain in a state of emergency this morning. some schools in the area are closed and firefighters are sticking close to neighborhoods in an effort to protect homes from flames. across the lake, there are some homes that were evacuated over the weekend after strong powerful wind pushed flames even past containment lines. >> this morning, firefighters gaining ground on the jennings creek fire. now nearly 90% contained in both new york and new jersey. but the national weather service warning that colorado on dry and windy conditions across the northeast remain a threat to spread the flames and ignite new fires. >> we have another wind event coming. obviously there is concern. >> officials say the wildfire is the largest in new york in 16 years with fire crews from as far as montana on the ground in the air working to manage in. helicopters from national guard dropping 50,000 gallons of water. >> very rocky and steep.

it makes it very difficult to get crews in much less engines. >> over the weekend, flames jumping containment lines because of the wind prompting voluntary evacuations still in effect that impacted over 160 homes in the neighboring town of warwick. more than half of the northeast remains under moderate drought with red like mornings on saturday impacting over 40 million people. crews managing localized brushfires and other states like massachusetts and connecticut. now this morning, within the fire threat far from gone, officials hope that rain in the near forecast will help them get the job done. >> we are trying to control and contain mother nature. >> just south of here, new york city fire commissioner announcing its first ever brushfire task force after the fdny responded to a record 271 brushfires across the city over just the last two weeks. fortunately, there is forecasted up to a half inch of rain for later this week.

it will certainly be welcome relief for this dry landscape and strained firefighters. >> thank you. let's get over to al and see what the forecast holds. >> good morning. nationwide, 50% of the lower 48 states are in moderate drought. there was some slight improvement over the week. here is the northeast. 50% of the area is in a moderate drought. this is the worst sense 2002 of. you add to the gusty wind coming out of the northwest. 25 miles an hour from albany, boston, down to new york, philadelphia. and then combine that with the relative humidity falling below 40%. so it is bone dry out there. and so that will be a big problem. as emily mentioned, we do have a system that will be coming to the east. flood warnings right now for 6 million people from texas into central oklahoma. as the system moves east,

bringing heavy rain to the plains, a severe risk in the central texas for strong wind and possible tornadoes, hail as well. the system will continue to move to the east. remnants of sara will bring a lot of moisture up and into the panhandle of florida where we have the risk of some flooding as well. and we will be looking at anywhere from three, too inches of rain down along the central gulf. but we will see light rain making its way into the northeast and a quarter inch to half-inch. we will get to your local forecast in the next 30 seconds. but who is sandracheryl? she's a little bit of this, and a little bit of that... ♪♪ and some other things. i'm laura garcia. breaking news this morning in san jose, where police officers shot and injured a suspect while responding to a family disturbance. it happened near south first and sutter streets. two blocks of sutter street remain closed at this hour. police say at around 8 p.m, a man threatened them with a knife and an officer fired. he then barricaded himself in a home until officers moved in for an arrest. police say the suspect is now in critical condition. i'm bob redell. the fda is investigating an e coli outbreak involving contaminated carrots that were sold at stores including target, trader joe's, sprouts and walmart. these carrots came from grimmway farm, based in bakersfield. they were found on selected, bagged, organic, whole and baby carrots. the whole carrots alone are sold under 15 different names, including bunny love and o organics. these carrots have since been removed from store shelves, but if you have them at home, you are asked to obviously throw that away. the cdc says
