the past. new film, new week. same duo. >> good to see you. >> lead to be back here with all of you. >> we are going to jump in with president-elect donald trump confirming the controversial boarding plan over cabinet picks it. >> the president-elect says he plans to use the military to carry out his mass deportation program. mr. trump responded "true" to a social media post saying that he will declare a national emergency. >> matt gaetz will be under the spotlight again on capitol hill this week. nbc news learned the house ethics committee will meet wednesday to discuss its report. the panel was investigating allegations of sexual misconduct and illicit drug use, both of which gaetz denies. we have dasha burns in the studio. and ellie vitale at her post on the hill. >> we know that he is facing a tough confirmation battle. of majority of center pelicans are doubting he will be

confirmed as attorney general. this was before we learned of the ethics committee's meeting on wednesday. what do we expect from these conversations happening later this week? >> reporter: not entirely shocking that house ethics wants together and talk about this. we learned last week they actually postpone the meeting on this topic. and so it makes sense that it would resurface this week. and i we learned that it will happen on wednesday afternoon. but what ends up happening is really an open question. you have the speaker of the house, mike johnson, urging the committee not to release the report and then you have senators from both sides of the aisle saying they would very much like to see it as a head into their advice and consent role of confirming some of these nominees, including gaetz. the open question is which way the senate and health ethics committee will go on this. there is precedent for them releasing reports of house members, even after they resigned their post as an

official member of congress. but typically, when you leave being a member, the ethics committee no longer has jurisdiction pick that is why you are starting to see this back and forth. gaetz resigned and the ethics committee no longer pertains to him but will they release the report? i guess we'll find out later this week. >> let's turn to dasha. let's talk about the mass deportation plan. in 2019, the first term of mr. trump, he did declare an emergency on the border and president biden reversed that when he was in office. how could things be different this time around with president- elect trump? >> think about the people he is installing. where loyalty is a priority. this time around, he could do something similar to what he did in 2018 where he did to play troops to help with the immigration issue at the pentagon at that time was very adamant that those troops could not actually apprehend migrants. that was not the job for the

military. this time around, he has a defense pick that is very loyal and wants to carry out exactly trump's orders. he could push the boundaries. is that legal? will there be challenges? very likely. will have to see how that goes in court and how far trump is going to push that boundary. there are a lot of questions about the logistics of a massive operation and the cost and the legality but trump's orders are putting the finishing touches on a plan. listen. >> we are already working on a plan. and going to mar-a-lago this week to put the final touches on. >> ice will do the job and secure the country and protect american communities and arrest the bad guys first. >> this is what trump campaigned on. the biggest campaign promise, shutting down the border and this mass deportation operation. now it is a matter of how he carries it out.

he seems determined to do so. we don't know the exact cost of it. one, immigration rights group immigrates the cost at $90 billion a year. but it was said in the interview that there are a lot of ifs about with the budget will be and they have to work with congress. a lot of questions. certainly, a lot of determination from mr. trump to carry this out and putting the pieces into place with the people that are willing to do it. >> dasha, thank you. some officials in the justice apartment and if you are preparing for what some are calling revenge prosecution one president-elect trump returns to the white house. now they are reaching out to lawyers. according to people with knowledge of the deliberations, several current and former senior officials anticipate the new trump administration wants to criminally investigate them. let's bring in our nbc news justin's an intelligence correspondent. and in your report, you said the selection of former congressman matt gaetz as attorney general, has amplified years and said the justice

department. what are your sources telling you? >> transiting is the personification of the mug our charges that the justice department has been corrupted and the jack smith special prosecution was motivated. i've been covering that for years and there is no evidence of any of that. people inside the doj are concerned there may be a special counsel appointed or some investigation launched, looking at e-mails and interviewing them and even if it goes nowhere, it would require them to hire lawyers and spend a lot of time and provoke a lot of anxiety. court we saw that to some extent with special counsel john durham investigating the mueller probe. went on a lot of rabbit trails that did not see the light of day. but nonetheless, it took a lot of time and people had to hire lawyers. that is the real worry. nobody thinks laws were broken or anything inappropriate was done in these investigations. but matt gaetz and a lot of people around trump and trump himself have said they want to prosecute the prosecutors.

>> it sounds like legal concerns go beyond potential legal trouble. we all know it is not unusual to have some equipment turnover when there is a shift in power in washington. but you have new reporting that some in the department of justice feel that it could head in an entirely new direction. >> that is right. we are talking about the career civil servants. the people that don't turnover administration to administration and in many cases are giving up higher private sector salaries to serve the american public and they are very used to going from a democrat to republican administration which has different policy priorities. what they are concerned about with incoming trump administration is the desire by donald trump and people around him to throw out the post- watergate norms and essentially take control of the justice department and have a president order specific criminal investigations. that has not been done since watergate and they would be very concerned about investigations that could be politically motivated and investigators without proper predication. that is a big concern right

now. people that are retirement eligible, career folks, are speaking about leaving and others are evaluating options. >> thank you. let's switch gears and talk turkey and the price you pay. aaa is expecting the thanksgiving holiday travel season to be one of the busiest yet. >> nearly 80 million americans across the country are expected to take planes, trains or automobiles to get to their destination. that would be a new record breaking last year's historically high numbers. >> christine romans is with us to talk about it. we know people are either probably flying or driving to their destinations but a lot of people are expected also to set sail on cruises. >> it is remarkable. number of americans hitting the road or setting sale, this number is up from 20% last year, the number of people going on a cruise for the holidays. it is really remarkable. and you are seeing international travel as well being popular over the

holidays. and the numbers we have never seen before, even with airfare of about 3%. so a lot of people are opening their wallets and getting behind the wheel or getting to the airport and are going to be going on vacation. >> and then one of the budget airlines spirit just filed for bankruptcy protection earlier today. so if somebody bought a ticket with spirit, what should they know? >> spirit wants everyone to know that they will try to reorganize. now they are in court to put the company back together financially but in the meantime, there will be business as usual. they say you can use your credits or loyalty rewards that you have and you can use a ticket or fly on the airline. you can buy a new ticket. they hope to be through the bankruptcy process by early next year. >> should be talk about driving? i was talking to my mom about, what day did they leave and then gas prices are better. >> gas prices are better.

bondholders and creditors under the restructuring plan. that includes $300 million in financing to help it stay in operation. the spirit ceo said operations will not be affected by the filing and customers can still book, fly or use loyalty points. meanwhile, tesla stock jumped big today after bloomberg reported that president elect trump plans to ease self driving regulations. tesla recently promised autonomous vehicles without steering wheels or petals. there is, requested from the trump team. according to netflix, record 60 million homes worldwide tuned in to watch jake paul defeat mike tyson in the event peaked at 65 million streams but it was not all good news. data show viewers reported issues streaming the fight with outages at more than 95,000 reports by 11:00 p.m. eastern time. netflix said in a few weeks,

of an outrageous violation of his constitutional rights. prosecutors are accusing combs of trying to obstruct justice in his sex trafficking case from behind bars. they allege in court documents that since his detainment, combs has continued to try to evade law enforcement monitoring, corruptly influence witness testimony and further attack the integrity of these proceedings. prosecutors say that they obtained personal notes and communications from the jail. attorneys for combs claim that violates his due process. let's bring in our legal analyst. what does all this mean? >> let's start with the government. the government is alleging that combs engaged and all this kind of gamesmanship which i have to tell you, all detainees, everyone in jail and all prisoners, there are so many rules about making context that that is what a lot of these folks do. they try to get around the rules. they are really restrictive. after all, you are in jail or

prison. the government alleges that he is using accounts of other prisoners to call out so it won't be detected and there alleging he is using three way calling. so he will call someone on his approved list but that person will 3-way someone in not on the approved list. this happens every day in jails and prisons around the country. but it is in violation of the rules. >> the combs legal team is asking for a new bail hearing. he has already been denied i think twice, bail. based on your experience, i don't know if it has anything to do with what we were just talking about but is it likely he will ever get bail? >> i like the defense moved. they are going on the offensive when the government alleges combs has broken all of these rules and prison including lent getting in touch with witnesses to influence his case. the defense is saying, okay but in doing that, the government obtained privileged materials and we want a hearing to figure out exactly what the government got and what they reviewed and whether or not it paints the

entire trial process. is your child on roadblocks? many of kids are on it and other digital gaming platform is rolling out new safety features. changes come after reports highlighting incidents of exquisite content. previously, roadblocks told nbc news that the incidence were isolated and not representative of the family-friendly experience. our anger joins us now with a closer look. first, for those not familiar with the platform, what is it and what is it changing? >> it is one of the most popular games for kids. especially kids in the late elementary school through middle school age and beyond. last year, they were massive. the company reported 60 million users. so there were tons of kids playing basically in this virtual world right along with adults.

and it is not just one game. that is the thing. you might ask your child to show you a game and roadblocks. and they will show you one game but it is really as close to the metaverse as any game has come. it is a bunch of different games and worlds. some are very violent and some are these sandbox games where you can build things and some are places where you can shop and the roadblocks has been under criticism for quite some time. they have allowed kids to privately message and receive private messages from just about anybody. now they are walking that down so parents have a little more control there. they have to be 13 years old to receive some private messages. and those controls are given to the parents. >> i'm wondering if there are more to the changes they are making. as you mentioned, roadblocks has come under fire for this idea that kids can access content that is inappropriate, violent or explicit. what are critics saying about the changes being made today and is it enough?

bottom of the hour. here are the stories making headlines on nbc news daily. >> three daughters of malcolm x have filed a 100 million- dollar lawsuit against the u.s. government. the lawsuit alleges that the cia, fbi, new york city police department and other law enforcement agencies played a role in the 1965 assassination. the lawsuit says that the agencies were aware of and involved in the assassination plot and failed to stop the killing. three men were convicted in the malcolm x murder. two were exonerated in 2021. the agencies mentioned in the lawsuit have declined to comment. people in syracuse, new york are demanding their government do something about the drinking water. in august, the city found elevated blood levels and water at some homes. city officials say the numbers where an outlier and that new tests show that low levels are below the limit for lead. many syracuse residents are demanding the city distribute water filters to household service by lead pipes because he said their working on plans to replace all lead pipes in the next year.

and ms. carter, christmas has come early for the beehive. netflix announced beyonci will be performing the halftime show during a ravens texans game christmas day. it will be a houston homecoming for the 32 time grammy winner who will be performing songs of of her latest album "cowboy carter. this will be the second of two and of all matchups streaming live on netflix for the first time ever. >> i know where you will be on christmas day. we take a turn now. president biden and leaders in ohio are forcefully condemning a neo-nazi march that happened over the weekend. >> and we want to warn you that the images are about to see may be distressing pick this took place saturday in columbus and it is the second not the related demonstration in the u.s. and just last week. let's bring in our nbc news correspondent for the latest. what exactly happened this weekend? i understand there was a counter protest on sunday. >> let's start with what happened on saturday. nbc news has been able to look at the video that eyewitnesses

were able to record in columbus, ohio saturday afternoon. and we were able to locate that and confirm the authenticity of the video of a location perspective. what we understand from our affiliate in columbus is that there was a group of people. maybe a dozen or slightly less, that were marching through the streets of columbus uttered afternoon carrying these black flags with the red swastikas on them. they were wearing red masks as well. one person had a bullhorn they were yelling racial slurs and to as they were marching through the city. as you noted, there was sort of a counter protest if you will, counter demonstration on sunday. we understand there were about 30 black men that got together after hearing about and seeing some of the social media postings about the incident. on saturday, they said they wanted to sort of stand up to the fear that these groups were trying to bring into the community and show that they can unite in a positive way and in a peaceful way.

>> i know we've reached out to the trump transition team to see if the president-elect has any comments and we have not heard back. what has president biden said? would have ohio leaders said? >> the white house called it is sickening display putting a statement earlier today on behalf of president biden from the spokesperson saying that president biden of bors the nazi -ism and anti- semitism and racism which are hostile to everything the united states dance for. the governor of ohio also putting out a statement calling on his community to denounce this sort of hateful activity anywhere that it may pop up saying that we will not tolerate hate in ohio. there were several other local leaders, community leaders, that spoke up about the incident in ohio over the weekend saying that they don't support it and don't want to see it in there and they want to make sure people know about it and speak out against it. >> thank you. you might want to check

your refrigerator if you recently bought raw organic carrots. >> the centers for disease control control issued a nationwide recall for organic carrots because of possible e. coli contamination. the carrots were distributed by grimmway arms out of bakersfield, california. this includes hole, baby organic carrots sold under popular brands. this includes trader joe's, whole foods and wegmans to name a few. e. coli infections have been reported from this and i think 18 states so far. at least 39 people have gotten sick and one person has died what should we know about e. coli? what should we know about signs of a possible infection? >> this is unfortunately all too, and the food supply. often, animal manure can be a contaminant. this could happen.

not to alarm the public. but this is an outbreak causing us some degree of concern. things to be aware of. three days after consuming e. coli is when you can develop symptoms. they could be gi symptoms. gi upset. not to be graphic. but you could see blood in the toilet bowl as well. fever or flulike illness. that is the hallmark of e. coli and what to watch out for. >> you talked a bit about how it typically spreads. it does feel like we have been seeing more and more of it. is their something unique to that? >> unfortunately, this is just the risk that we face every single day. control efforts, especially when it comes to farming mitigate the risk of this by 99.99%. we do a great job of mitigating risk. sometimes the efforts have been. we saw with mcdonald's and onions. now we are seeing it with raw carrots. and unfortunately, this is a risk. you have to make sure your

prolific da vinci was even 500 years after his life. so many people are captivated. mona lisa, last supper. he was not known for finishing projects per se. but i'm wondering, what surprised you and did you learn anything new? >> everything. >> in a lot of ways, it is all new to us. we all know a few of those things. the famous paintings. we understand he is something of a scientist and engineer. for us, the process of working on the film is that journey of discovery and getting to know what is beyond that. he left behind more than 4000 pages of notebooks with his drawings and writings and astonishing the breath of his interest. >> he does write backwards. >> he is a lefty. i spend my entire grade school smudging the page. he decided to write backwards in a mirror script. if you have ever done that, imagine doing it every moment

of your life for the rest of your life even if you are writing a grocery list or 4000 or 6000 pages of these expirations. they are not diaries. they're not telling you how they feel but these penetrating searches into the meaning of everything. and so you can look at the mona lisa is a great work of science and some anatomy is a great work of art and i can hear his voice in my head chastising me and saying, what is the difference? >> and we talk more about the makings and in watching the sun, i wondered if we could have a da vinci today. we are all here. he spent so much time outside. why were his formative years so critical? >> first of all, he is born out of wedlock so that means he is not privileged to follow the route of his father who is a notary, accountant and lawyer. he can't do that. so nature becomes his primary and first teacher which grounds him and a sense of curiosity about how things work.

and as he works himself into the artistic scene of florence, they are not just studying paintings but drawings and sculptures and letter making and jewelry and bookbinding. and learning anatomy. he is becoming somebody who decides, i need to know everything about everything. there are things we discovered 500 years after his death, that he is right about. 450 years after his death. the way the heart works. there is no purpose when he is alive but it is central to what we do know today. >> you and your dad have been working together for about 15 years now. so it is not your first rodeo together. but you moved to italy with your husband and kids? >> yes. >> that is dedication. >> we spent a school year in florence to do the filming and the research and really to walk and leonardo's footsteps and to feel closer to his italian

nests and spending time immersed in the space. and amazingly not that different. >> i was shocked when you were showing the old and the new. you can see there is not much change in the cathedral or in the town. >> it is not dissimilar. we filmed the workshops for the art of making crafts to show what it would be like when leonardo was an apprentice. there are people making these things with their hands and in very similar ways as they did during the renaissance. >> so powerful. what you hope people take away from this? >> i think it is that you want to have his curiosity. because of this, we don't leave ourselves open to the influence of these things to ask the big questions, the nature of the universe and what is our role as a human being? who are we and who am i? these big questions that are being relentlessly pursued. to be more like leonardo dicaprio is to be more open to the world. and i hope that no one ever
