the bay area from south san jose. look at fairfield 33 degrees up through parts of the north bay, 33 as well. and just to give you an idea, here's the temperature difference. compared to the past 24 hours running about 11 degrees colder right now in morgan hill, ten degrees cooler in oakland, and things will stay dry but cool throughout the remainder of the afternoon. we're in the 40s through about 9:10 a.m. for a lot of the spots, and then will be in the upper 50s low 60s. now i want to show you satellite radar, because the first thing you're going to notice is going to be the increase in cloud cover today. but look what's churning out in the pacific. there it is. you can see that moisture tap the atmospheric river is expected to make its arrival starting tomorrow. and folks in the north bay definitely need to prepare as we continue to see an active weather pattern lining up just in time, not only for wednesday, but also for the weekend. i'll have a closer look at that forecast in a few minutes. first, let's check in with mike. yeah, i was watching the crews here. i was watching the cones, actually, here on the northbound

torres seat has been vacant since he was arrested on charges of sexually molesting a minor. today, the san jose city council will take the next steps to figure out the best way to fill that position. the term runs through december 31st of 2026, and the city attorney laid out two options that will be discussed at the council meeting today. one option is to appoint someone to fulfill that term until the next regular election. this is the option supported by councilman sergio jimenez, who says it is the most efficient and least costly route. the other option is a special election, which is the option favored by mayor matt mahan, who says the people of district three should get to vote on who represents them. a special election, though, would still require an interim appointment as that special election would be months away. in the meantime, the chief of staff for district three has been trying to make sure that constituents know that

expected to officially wash awa. fire season. now that's big relief for firefighters in the north bay, but now the focus shifts to potential flooding. the first big storm of the season, not expected to lead to major flooding issues, but sandbags are already available and many of the cities, including santa rosa. meteorologist vianey arana is tracking the incoming storm, and this one i understood could stick around for a while. yeah. anytime we're monitoring atmospheric rivers, the big concern is whether it will stall out over one location. and that's what we typically tend to see. the problem with that is that means that you're going to get a ton of rain all at once. so if you zoom this out a bit, notice that's what we've got churning out in the pacific. you can see that moisture connection tap there. this is expected to make its arrival for tomorrow. now even though we're not expecting to see any major flooding at this initial system on wednesday, i do want to kind of turn your attention towards some of the rivers and the creeks. we're not expecting the napa river to go into flood stage. we're going to see that crest early saturday morning,
5:10 am
but we could still see a quick rise in our localized stream flow. so be mindful of that. the russian river also expected to crest saturday night at about 22ft, so that's a pretty quick rise. i mean, in the north they were expecting anywhere from 5 to 7in out of these initial rounds of rain. and then we are monitoring the arrival of a second storm system. that's also going to be another atmospheric river heading into sunday. so right now things are looking like they're going to hit the action stage right underneath i. but by the time that we get to that second storm on sunday, we could be dealing with even bigger issues leading into next week. but i'll have a closer look at that extended forecast and also what the sierra can expect in a few minutes. now let's go and check in with mike. all right. hey, folks, livermore still leads our list. it's back on the state's best ten list with two two marathon stations, both at 349, one on south livermore avenue and the other on home street. then in the north bay, we have fairfield that has their low of 369 for solano county. that's bond fair market on walters road and the best in silicon valley,

through parts of santa rosa and napa and low 80s, i should say low 60s. excuse me. and about a 20 degree difference there. livermore about 60 degrees, san jose 63. and you're going to notice the system making its arrival first on wednesday. so starting tomorrow, it's going to start out in the north bay, becoming more spread southward. by the time we get to tomorrow evening. and if you notice, even into thursday, the majority of this does stay just north of the golden gate bridge. that's going to mean some of those higher totals for areas like sonoma, santa rosa, areas south of the golden gate bridge will get more of that impact starting on friday. you're going to also notice that it will start to get much colder and also hazy at times in the morning. but if you look here, this wintry mix with the pink and the blues, that's more sierra snow. now that active weather pattern creates that instability that's going to keep us with some rain into saturday. and then on sunday we're monitoring a second atmospheric river. sunday looks to be a bit more towards the south bay. we're going to take a closer look as far as rain totals right now, though, it
5:22 am
does still look like the north bay will have the biggest impact. let's take a look at the outlook heading into thursday. if you look at the key index right up top, we've got anywhere from about 3 to 4in for the north bay areas just south of the golden gate. we're talking less than an inch, but by the time we hit that friday, saturday forecast, look at some of the totals up through parts of the north bay over six inches some areas could see upwards of seven inches. we've got a little over two inches in areas like the santa cruz mountains. and then of course, we've got to keep a close eye as well on the sierra, we've got some snow totals, accumulations upwards of 20 plus feet or inches heading into the weekend. so here's what to expect wednesday into saturday. isolated flooding for the north bay that will be hit the hardest. and then of course we're going to watch out for that wind 15 to 40mph. there. so please be mindful of your 7-day forecast. we've got overnight lows in the 40s. and then we're going to max out in those upper 50s low 60s. now let's get a check of how the roads are doing with a mike. mike how's it looking out there. you know so conditions are great. as you

know we haven't had those changes. vianey is talking about. but prepare for the rain. check those windshield wipers, folks. but we are looking over toward the tri-valley, where we do have two crashes reported for your commute direction. westbound on 580. the one in isabel not seeing slowing because folks are slowed down approaching the area right around first in springtown, there may be three left, three of your left lanes blocked. that may leave only one lane. and the off ramp lane as as your access. getting past springtown. no major injuries reported, but there's damage to these vehicles. again, that's the first slowdown you see. the second one is actually starting to clear up south 680. that crew we talked about in sunol, they did report clear from the caltrans grid, but there's still equipment probably in the area. so that might be for some slowing north 87 toward curtner. things have maintained some slowing approaching the scene of a crash, which should be getting off to the shoulder. back to you. thank you. mike 523 this morning, a jolly celebration in store over at rockefeller center this year. next up here on today in the bay, the performance lineup set to take the stage at this year's tree lighting plus a beloved comedy, returns to nbc tonight. a preview of the new

cover as we continue to monitor right there that atmospheric river expected to make its arrival starting tomorrow, mainly for the north bay initially. and then it's going to become more southward spread by the evening. now there will also be a flood watch that will start going into effect tomorrow. for areas highlighted in green. so we're talking about santa rosa, san rafael, napa, calistoga. this is going to remain in place all the way through friday morning because we're talking about excessive rainfall. also, we're monitoring our local creeks and stream flows for the north bay. we could see some areas of ponding water in the roadways. the typical areas where you see some low lying flooding. now overall, we're going to see that these impacts will vary. areas in the south bay will get a lot less rain, but you'll still notice some impacts as far as the wind speeds go. i'll go into more detail as far as the timing and potential rain totals coming up in my extended forecast. first, let's get a check of how everything is going with mike. yeah, tougher drive right now through livermore, folks. 580 continues to build up as we continue to have left lanes, multiple left lanes blocked westbound 580 right around
5:41 am
springtown. you see the slower sensors building up past greenville, getting back toward north flynn and out of the altamont pass because of the lane restrictions there. the issue on vasco road, we don't have any detail from chp other than there's some sort of hazard roadway hazard there. but you do see the typical slowing right around dalton and approaching the area, your commute direction. this debris reported around los vaqueros, and it's not excessive. so we're going to continue to follow that as an issue out of contra costa county, down toward 580. the south bay, we still have that crash north 87 at curtner causing a distraction. and some slowing. typical for 101, you're northbound, slowing there as well. the peninsula is clear right now. now, in a few hours, we're going to have that daytime closure continuing this week over here on highway nine between sanborn road and redwood gulch. so keep that in mind from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and then overnight, we'll have the continued closure this week as long as weather permits. they're working on the drainage over here. highway 37 and lakeville highway. lane restrictions cleared by 4 a.m. today. they should be happening and clear by
5:42 am
the same time tomorrow if they hold it at all. if that rain comes in through the north bay, they may adjust that schedule. the lower manzanita park and ride has been closed because of that flooding. remember, those king tides are in and that rain will be coming in tomorrow morning and starting from the north bay. as vianey said. scott. all right. mike, well, coming up on today in the bay, vladimir putin rattling the nuclear saber as ukraine fires conventional weapons into russia. plus, and i hope it will be such a thrilling experience for the musical lovers. it is wicked weekend ahead. i go one on one with the wicked lead talented star michelle yeoh ahead of the movie's premiere. what she says she really hopes fans love most about this upcoming film. much

six degrees. expect to see that increase in cloud cover. we're maxing out in the upper 50s. low 60s today and enjoy the dry weather. we've got wet weather on the way. full forecast coming up. all the traffic has arrived at the bay bridge. we have the backup typical of a tuesday. we may see a little more traffic on your morning commute as folks get into the office, finish up some business, maybe try to take a little more time off next week. we do have additional delays though. continuing for the tri-valley. we'll check livermore coming up. investigators say a tragic chain of events led to the death of a mail carrier in the north bay.
5:46 am
this happened last night in santa rosa. this is when an suv driver plowed into a mail carrier on the side of the road. this is on corrigan street near north point parkway. now, police later determined the driver suffered a medical emergency, losing control of that vehicle. a witness said that the car swerved several times before impact, and the mail man was outside his truck sorting that mail. authorities identified that victim as 33 year old irvine hernandez from santa rosa. the suv driver suffered minor injuries. it's 5:45 right now. more trouble for trump's pick for attorney general and scott mcgrew. the lawyer who represented women who testified against matt gaetz speaking out. yes, he is pretty much to every news outlet. those women testified behind closed doors, either to the house or the doj. and that lawyer says one of his clients was eyewitness to gaetz having sexual relations with an underage girl, among other accusations. this allegedly happened at a 2017 pool party in
5:47 am
florida while gaetz was a u.s. congressman. the house ethics committee investigated created a report about that alleged crime, and others showing fellow members of congress on the house floor was one of them, but nobody's actually seen that report. many senators say they want to see it before gaetz's confirmation hearings. the editorial board, meantime, at the conservative wall street journal, controlled by rupert murdoch, is calling for trump to drop tulsi gabbard's name as a proposed director of national intelligence. not so much. they're worried about the association with russian propaganda, and more concerned that gabbard, a former democrat, not tough enough. miss gabbard has given no indication across her long political career that she is the right person for that vital duty. it says russian president vladimir putin has signed a new russian policy regarding the use of nuclear weapons. it's important to note this document has been making its way around the russian
5:48 am
government for some time. it's not new, but now that it's official, it does change russia's official nuclear stance to say that russia will allow the use of nuclear weapons to protect its sovereignty, and it will consider an attack by a non-nuclear force who is allied with a nuclear force, to be one of those situations. obviously, this exactly describes what's happening in ukraine, where the ukrainian military has been given permission by the united states to start using atacms medium range missiles to target locations inside russia itself. ukraine has been shooting things into russia for months and months, but not missiles. we supplied the ukrainians and the russians say that ukraine has already started launching atacms just days after getting permission. it's normal for the incoming president to get intelligence briefings about these kinds of things. so he's up to speed. and the washington post says trump has started to receive those briefings. in
5:49 am
fact, he was entitled to them as a candidate. but he went on record to say he had rejected those briefings because he was worried he'd be accused of leaking them. trump has struggled in the past with what secret and what's not. when he was president, trump tweeted out a photograph taken by a u.s. spy satellite of a missile site in iran. that picture shows the world, the capabilities of our spy satellites not meant for public consumption. at a party at mar-a-lago. then president trump showed japanese prime minister abe a document about an attack on syria. they used their phones to light up the pages so they could see them in full view of other party goers. and finally, one more poll about the election. the economist newspaper and yougov asked democrats who was to blame for the historic loss in a vast majority of respondents said nobody really. it's just one of those days. the notable thing is far more democrats blamed biden for a variety of reasons than
5:50 am
harris. she took the least of the blame. that same poll said americans were pretty much 5050 on harris's running mate, tim walz. about half liked him, half didn't. same for jd vance and first new buddy. what's it called? first buddy elon musk though when you break that down by party. democrats do not like elon musk. 79% polled disapprove of his policies. thank you very much, scott. it is 5.49 right now. switching gears a little bit here, one of broadway's most popular musicals, taking the yellow brick road all the way to the big screen. you've probably heard about it, but wicked is opening in movie theaters later this week. yeah, i was able to chat one on one with one of the stars of the movie, oscar award winning actress michelle yeoh. she says fans can expect a lot from this cinematic experience of a beloved story. our paths did cross at school for more than two decades. the musical wicked has entertained fans with its characters. your green. i am. and of course, the music.

okay, we'll get to that song in just a moment. but first, let's take the journey to oz, the land of oz. before dorothy's house fell on the wicked witch of the east. this is the story of how glinda and elphaba, the wicked witch of the west, met at the school of magic shiz university, where michelle yeoh plays madame morrible. when you look at the promotions and visuals for the movie, you just can't help but to feel like you're there. from what i understand, you almost weren't there because you didn't initially just want to jump into this. you had to be persuaded. yes, i did call back and say, john, you realize i don't sing, right? and this is a musical dancing i can do for you any time. then he goes like, it's not a problem. you'll be fine. so if you care to find me, look to the western sky. what michelle lacked in her vocal ability was more than met by
5:52 am
both ariana grande playing glinda and cynthia erivo as elphaba, who both persuaded yeoh along with the help of the movie's director and bay area native jon chu from the peninsula. whenever anyone asked me like, what's the one movie you want to do? if there was one, i would always say, would be wicked. the two hours and 40 minutes of magical sets, costumes, story and music all bring what so many loved on the stage to life on the big screen. you can do anything. i know. how wicked the movie opens in theaters on friday, and defying gravity, the curtain rises on wicked airs at 10:00 tonight. that's followed by nbc bay area news at 11. and if you don't think you can get through the movie without singing, universal pictures is bringing the experience to you. universal announcing that there will now be interactive showings of the

movie musical as well. they'll be offered in theaters starting on christmas day, so respect your fellow moviegoers in the next few weeks and channel your inner elphaba at the sing along screenings could be fun for families there. yeah. okay, so you know, a lot of people dress up for the film. what do you think this is giving a little shout out to one wicked super fan who no doubt will be watching this weekend? our midday producer justin, and his little dog too. and his little dog, who he's not actually green. i've seen him. can he hit the note? that is the question. all right, we'll wait for the sing along. oh, i'm sure he wil. all right. well, good. it'll be a lot of people getting their tickets early for this. and it's going to be rainy, so it's perfect time to go see. yeah. cozy weather at the movies. i think that's fair. especially with how the week is setting up rain wise. right now it's about 41 degrees in san rafael and we're 11 degrees cooler compared to yesterday. let me show you
5:54 am
where we're seeing some of the coldest spots. we're still under that frost advisory and through much of the interior and freeze warnings up to the north bay till about 8 a.m. notice how cold it is. santa rosa 33, pleasanton 38, fremont 38 degrees right now. and of course, we've got this increase in cloud cover. that's the calm for today heading into tomorrow, though, things will change. and here's the reason why we've got our first real significant storm of the season. this atmospheric river lining up out in the pacific. you can see, in fact, that moisture tap. and it looks like we're monitoring a second one as well heading into sunday. but first, let's get you to your forecasted highs for this afternoon. upper 50s, low 60s. aside from the clouds, it's going to be dry. we're going to keep a jacket around because that jacket is going to need a layer of rain gear. once we head into tomorrow, but it's going to depend on where you live. so heading into wednesday and thursday, notice the majority of the system is more focused on areas north of the golden gate bridge. they're going to see the greatest impacts out of that
5:55 am
first initial round of rain. on wednesday. as we enter into that friday, saturday forecast, you'll notice we'll get more of a widespread effect that means more areas south of the golden gate will start to see rain, so the impacts will start to feel more of a rainy feel for the south bay. starting friday to saturday. accumulations. though once we continue to see this active weather pattern heading into sunday, we've got a second atmospheric river that's also going to impact areas in southern california as well into next week, so that active weather pattern is right now looking like it could be anywhere from a moderate to a strong one. if you look at the atmospheric river outlook scale, one being the week with that blue five being extreme, we're kind of mixing in some of this yellow starting on wednesday into thursday. so notice we start to see some of that inching closer towards the south bay by the time we get to friday. so we're talking about a moderate to strong atmospheric river into sunday, though it does look like that second round will be a lot weaker. rainfall totals heading into wednesday and thursday. the highest will be for the north bay. and then you'll notice areas extending south of the golden gate will

start to see that color filling in friday into saturday. so seven inches for the north bay less than three inches for the rest by the time we get to the weekend. but for today, that rain is coming. all right, mike, how are those roads doing? roads are backing up, as you would expect at this time on a tuesday, vianey good conditions as vianey talked about. those will change. so prepare for the rain. that's today is your preparation day over here. the backup is filling in the toll plaza and they're slowing down through richmond out of pinole for westbound 80. typical for the east bay. no surprises for highway 37 or highway four. we do see a little slowing on 242. again, the build through concord typical about this time we still have the disabled vehicle reported on vasco at los vaqueros, but not a big issue. the big issue is west 580. we're down to two lanes at springtown and so that is jamming you up out of the altamont pass in through livermore. there is a new crash south 680 at or around stoneridge. the earlier issues cleared up. and now that crash is more slowing back to you. thanks, mike. well, happening now we will likely see spending for the city of oakland. some
