>> it's the latest in a string in a chain of food safety issues, listeria linked to deli meats and salmonella found in fresh basil, cucumbers, and eggs. nbc's anne thompson is here with more. >> grimway farms is the largest producer of carrots in the world, but this morning it has a giant-sized problem. an e. coli outbreak linked to some of its organic carrots, now suspected in the death of one person and sickening many more. this morning, those carrots are no longer believed to be on grocery shelves, but they could be in your refrigerator or freezer. >> i have a bag of carrots in here, who knows how long these carrots have been in here. i'm going to check them. >> reporter: if you find them, the cdc says throw them out. grimway farms is recalling some of its bagged whole and baby organic carrots. the vegetables were sold in some of america's most popular stores, including trader joe's, wegman's, and whole foods. los angeles county health

officials say there's been one death of an adult over 65 with medical conditions that's linked to the outbreak. once produce becomes contaminated with bacteria like e. coli, food safety experts say there's only so much you can do at home. >> unfortunately, washing produce doesn't eliminate the issue. it might reduce the risk a little bit, but that is really the issue that we have with fresh produce, is that we can't wash it off. >> this follows the e. coli outbreak at mcdonald's linked to slivered onions from a third-party supplier on its quarter pounders. the company is now spending $100 million on a recovery plan. the fda says there does not appear to be a continued food safety concern. >> have y'all seen all of these recalls that's going on in the united states with the food? >> other recent outbreaks, listeria linked to deli meats, including boor's head products

that resulted in ten deaths, and salmonella found in fresh cucumbers, eggs, and fresh basil. unfortunately, experts say, these periodic outbreaks are not unusual. >> i wouldn't say that we should be worried about our nation's vegetable supply. i will say that fresh produce always provides us with complications. >> okay. now, these whole organic carrots were sold in stores from august 14th to october 23rd, and they have no best-use by dates. the baby organic carrots have best if used by dates ranging from september 11th to november 12th. grimway farms ceo says the company is, quote, conducting a thorough review of its growing, harvest, and processing practices. >> is there any connection here? why are we suddenly hearing about these? or is it just one of those random things? >> part of the problem is there are so many different points of possible contamination along the process. everything from irrigation to wildlife to harvesting machinery that may not be clean, even to human interaction. and that's the problem.

there are many different possible points of contact where the e. coli could get into the food. >> a lot of detective work to do there. >> thanks, annie. >> thank you. also this morning, a suspect is in custody, charged in connection with the deadly stabbing rampage. it happened here in new york. it started yesterday morning. three victims were killed at three different locations, in are what police are saying were unprovoked attacks. that terrifying spree captured on surveillance video. erin mclaughlin has the details for us. erin, good morning. >> savannah, good morning. this stabbing spree is shocking. according to police, the suspect had an extensive criminal history and serious mental health issues, leading the mayor of new york city to openly question why he was out on the streets. >> reporter: overnight, the man accused in a deadly stabbing spree charged with three counts

of first-degree murder. police say this chilling surveillance footage shows the moments before the attacks in the heart of new york city. you can see the suspect put on a hoodie and gloves. he then pulls a large knife from his backpack. >> these attacks seem to be unprovoked. that he just walked up to them and began to attack them with the knife. >> reporter: according to police, the suspect identified as 51-year-old ramon rivera used these kitchen knifes to stab three people, in three separate attacks at locations across manhattan on monday morning, killing two men and a woman who died at the hospital overnight. >> this is our suspect for the stabbing. >> reporter: this eyewitness says the cab driver alerted police to the suspect, believing he'd witnessed a robbery. >> started yelling, stop that guy, stop that guy. >> reporter: another bystander says the suspect was calmly walking with a bag or purse. >> i told him, drop the bag. there's going to be cops up ahead. drop the bag. it's not worth it. and of course, he didn't listen. he kept walking. and then the police got him. >> i just heard a commotion from where i was, stepped outside, heard what people were saying, and reacted.

>> reporter: officials say rivera has severe mental health issues, describing him as a homeless man with a recent arrest record. he has been arrested eight times in new york city this past year alone and was just released from custody last month. >> it is a clear, clear example of the criminal justice system, mental health system, that continues to fail new yorkers. >> reporter: the nypd says major crime is down slightly in new york city, compared to this time last year. but this latest deadly attack has new yorkers and visitors on high alert ahead of the holidays. according to police, all three victims suffered from multiple stab wounds. and according to records, in addition to his criminal history here in new york, he'd been arrested three times in new jersey in the last year, and had rap sheets in at least two other states.

he's yet to enter a plea and is waiting to face a judge. savannah? >> all right, erin mclaughlin, thank you very much. let's turn now to the latest on the trump transition. his pick for attorney general facing fresh scrutiny this morning, even as the president-elect announces new picks for his next administration. nbc's senior washington correspondent hallie jackson joins us now with the very latest. hey, hallie, good morning. >> hey, hoda, good morning to you. the trump team says matt gaetz is the right man to serve as the next attorney general and new this morning, trump confidant elon musk is giving his public stamp of approval, calling gaetz a hammer of justice. all of it comes even as we're hearing new details about testimony to investigators involving the sexual misconduct allegations against the man who could lead the department of justice next year. this morning, new scrutiny for matt gaetz, president-elect trump's embattled pick for attorney general. mr. trump has been reportedly reaching out personally to senators to ask them to back

gaetz' nomination. the now-former florida congressman resigned his seat last week, ending a house ethics committee's inquiry into a series of troubling allegations, which gaetz has long denied, including illicit drug use and sex with a then 17-year-old girl with a florida party in 2017. attorney general joel leopard represents a woman who says she was there. >> what did your client witness? >> she was walking outside to the pool and observed to the right her friend, who was 17 at the time, having sex with representative gaetz. they were leaned up to what she described as a game table of some time. >> did your client believe that gaetz at the time knew that her friend was underage? >> she testified that her belief was that representative gaetz had no knowledge that she was under 18. >> reporter: leopard said her clients, both the alleged witness and another woman, testified to that house committee this spring. >> they put up a number of venmo payments and paypal payments by representative gaetz and asked both of my clients, what were each one of these payments made

for? and my clients repeatedly testified, well, that was for sex. >> reporter: the justice department ultimately declined to bring charges against gaetz and a gaetz spokesperson says these are baseless allegations intended to derail the second trump administration. the house ethics committee is set to meet tomorrow according to a source familiar to discuss the gaetz report. >> the fact of the matter is, whether we get the ethics report or not, the facts are going to come out. >> reporter: also coming under fire, mr. trump's pick to run the nation's health agency, robert f. kennedy jr. his own cousin, caroline kennedy, the u.s. ambassador to australia, taking aim at his anti-vaccine positions. >> i think his ideas on vaccines are dangerous and -- but i don't think that most americans share them. >> hallie, let's go back to the gaetz nomination. the house committee will meet tomorrow. what do we expect? what are the likely next steps? >> yeah, listen. we may find out, savannah, whether that report on the investigation that it did will be released.

these bone-dry conditions are fueling new wildfires and shrinking water supplies. the manasquan reservoir here is at about just half of its 4 billion gallon capacity, which is why i can now walk on its sandy bottom. we've been watching the water levels recede week after week, more and more. it's staggering scenes like this that are multiplying across this region and causing concern amid unprecedented dry conditions. this morning, a split screen of weather extremes, as the country's midsection is battered by storms, toppling trees and snarling traffic, the northeast remains desperate for rain. overnight, crews battling a raging brush fire just south of boston in milton, massachusetts. >> this is actually pretty scary, to have this-sized fire here in more of a metropolitan area. >> reporter: bone-dry conditions fueling two new fires in heinousport and lakewood, new jersey. the city declaring its first

drought warning in more than two decades, pointing to staggering before and after pictures of reservoirs in the region. many seasons facing their driest seasons on record, including scranton, pennsylvania. >> we're only a week, week and a half away from thanksgiving and we're working brush fires right now, which is unusual for this part of the country. >> reporter: even under normal circumstances, thanksgiving is the leading day for home cooking fires, surging on average, 240%. now with the northeast a tinderbox, scranton's fire chief is urging his community to be extra cautious, cooking in the kitchen and outdoors this holiday. >> just make sure you take those precautions. >> as the driest conditions in decades cause concerns ahead of

the holiday. >> reporter: so there are drought warnings in new york city, here in new jersey and other parts of the northeast. still, officials are not ruling out the possibility that they could upgrade to a drought emergency, which could imply mandatory water restrictions. they're hoping that forecasted rain later this week will help prevent that. but remember, this is a region that is in need of inches of rain, to make up this deficit, craig. >> yeah, wild to see how dry that reservoir is behind you. emilie, thank you. >> when will that rain finally arrive in the northeast? get that answer from dylan who's on the road for al this morning. >> good morning, guys. we will get some relief, as far as easing the fire concerns, but i don't think we're going to get enough rain to really help too much with the drought. but today could be the last day that we have to deal with this fire threat. we have red flag warnings and an evaluated fire risk posted across parts of southern new england, winds could gust up to 25 miles per hour today and humidity is still very low, down around 30%. now, we do have finally, some rain waiting in the wings. we've got heavy rain today

stretching down along the gulf coast. it's kind of tropical in nature, so down through the panhandle of florida, we could see some tropical-like downpours, a soaking rain from there. watch what happens as we go into wednesday. we see rain move through virginia and north carolina, then wednesday night into thursday, we get that much-needed rain moving across pennsylvania, through new jersey, up across connecticut and massachusetts, and into new york, where we will see several inches of rain possible, even on the backside of it, believe it or not, we could end up with some snow showers, too. but here's our measurable rain. 1 to up to 2 inches of rain possible. that's enough to at least lower that fire danger threat. but we are going to need much more than this to help raise those reservoir levels a bit. that's a look at the weather across the country. we'll get to your local forecast coming up in the next 30 seconds.

managed to get through those defenses. the second major security breach at windsor in recent years. this morning, new questions about the security of the royal family, after a burglary on the sprawling windsor estate, where prince william and kate live with their three children. king charles and queen camilla who often stay at windsor castle were not there at the time and it's unclear whether william, kate, and their three children were home at aid adelaide college. police say it happened on a sunday night. two offenders entered the building, stealing a black pickup and a red quad bike. the closest entrance to the windsor estate, a gate often used by the royal family, and just five minutes' drive from william and kate's home. >> it's a little concerning. they should have the best security in the world. >> it's not the first time the royal family has dealt with a break-in. three years ago, on christmas

welcome back this morning on "in depth today," the countdown to the thanksgiving travel rush. >> the countdown is on. we're just one week away from its start, with aaa forecasting nearly 80 million of us will be packing planes and cars to visit family and friends. >> so what should travelers expect as we kick off this holiday season? in a moment, we'll talk to the head of the tsa. but first, nbc's tom costello joins us now from reagan national. hey, tom! morning. >> hey, guys. when was the last time you were on a plane and it wasn't packed, right? planes these days are completely packed. the tsa says, in fact, the ten busiest travel days in its history have all come this year, since spring, up 5.5% over last year. so if you're going to be traveling over thanksgiving, expect packed planes, record volume in airports, and the roads are going to be pretty packed as well. it's already one of the busiest times of the year to travel, but

this thanksgiving is shaping up to be a record breaker. aaa says a whopping 71.1 million americans will hit the highways. that's 1.3 million more than last year. the good news, relief at the pump. the national average now $3.06 a gallon, according to gas buddy. a year ago, it was $3.30. 12 states right now have averages below $2.75 a gallon. what's driving gas prices lower? >> well, a lot of it is merely seasonal. gasoline demand declining into the cooler weather, but a global slowdown in the economy is also behind lower global demand. that's pushing oil and gas prices down abroad as well. another trend this thanksgiving, americans are headed to warm weather, with the top three domestic destinations all in the sunshine state. meanwhile, the nation's airports are preparing for busy runways. in total, the tsa expecting to screen 18.3 million passengers

and crew from next tuesday through monday, december 2nd. and watch this wild card. winter weather, with much of the continental u.s. facing rain and snow fronts ahead of thanksgiving week. >> much of the country has a chance for above-normal rainfall patterns. this means numerous storms moving across the country. >> reporter: the tsa says the three busiest travel days will be the tuesday and wednesday before thanksgiving, and the sunday after the holiday. >> we have seen record-breaking travel really since the lows of the pandemic. and we expect it to continue. this year, about 5% more capacity is scheduled over thanksgiving week. >> all of it setting up for a busy december in the skies, as well. >> so if you haven't bought your ticket yet for christmas, book it now? >> definitely be looking at prices and expect to book in the next two weeks or so. >> reporter: yeah, that's for christmas. if you are not tied to the school schedule, lucky you, by the way. if you're not tied to a school schedule, when will airfares

drop? you're going to get great prices in january and february, you guys. but none of you is going to be so lucky, i think. back to you. >> all right. tom. thank you. >> let's turn to the man in charge of those airport security lines, tsa administrator, david pacoski. so interesting to hear tom say the ten busiest days you've had have all been this year since may. >> since may. >> so are you ready for next week? you might break some records? >> we most definitely will break some records this week. our busiest day was the 7th of july, we expect the sunday following thanksgiving to be again over 3 million passengers. when i started this job seven years ago, 2 million was a target that we thought we might reach at some point. so it's been a rapid recovery in terms of air travel. >> so you're all staffed up, all ready for these days coming up? >> we are staffed up, we're ready. we have great partnerships with airports and air carriers. we all work together to make this happen. my team in airports, our transportation security

officers, our federal air marshals that are on flights. they need to be on, or our investigate teams that work in two locations in the country to make sure that we've properly vetted all the passengers, they work really hard through this period, really hard through the entire summer. i'm really proud of the work they do. >> david, for folks like us that have to travel a lot. we sign up for all of these programs, tsa precheck, this thing called century, global entry, clear, as well. i tell my kids sometimes at home, if everything is special, nothing is special. like, if you got one of these golden tickets now, is it still special? is it still worth it? >> it's absolutely worth it. if you look at our weight times. we measure wait times every single check time at the top of every hour. a precheck passenger, a global entry, nexus, century, and precheck all fit into that category, you will wait ten minutes or less on a very reliable basis. rarely does it get longer than ten minutes. usually it's in single digits. standard passengers, so not a trusted traveler program, our standard is 30 minutes or less.

so there's a significant time advantage to precheck. plus, in precheck, you don't have to take off light jackets, don't have to take off your shoes, your belts. it's just an expedited process. >> what about clear? >> clear is ahead of the line service. so clear verifies identity, and then they bring you to the first stop in the tsa checkpoint operation, and that's where we do some additional investigate and then you start the screening process. >> can we talk ey? >> we can. >> what thanksgiving foods are allowed to be carried on, and what are not? for example, pumpkin pie, is it a liquid or a solid. it can be flubby. >> it's jelly. cranberries in a can, what's the rule? >> kran berries in a can, no, turkey, yes, gravy, no. >> unless it's under 3 ounces? >> yeah. >> who's only having 3 ounces? >> a drop of gravy. i would just encourage people, for anything you bring thanksgiving or over the

the drugs. nbc medical contributor dr. natalie azar joins us now to break it down. that's a whole lot of folks watching and listening right now. what are the qualifications, dr. nat, to be considered? >> if we break that down, of that 137 million, about 129 million people would be eligible to manage their weight. about 35 million to manage diabetes, and about 8.9 million people to manage heart disease. these numbers really are staggering. and you know what? 137 million, that is more people than are eligible for statins, which as we know, are almost just ubiquitous, because of the reduction in heart disease. and this comes at a very timely moment for us, because just last week, there was a report that showed that about 75% of americans are either overweight or obese. and in 1990, that number was just over 50%. and the estimate is that 80% are going to be so by 2050.

this is definitely one of those wake-up calls to say, wow, a lot of people are definitely eligible for this medicine. >> does that mean that insurance has to cover? because these are very expensive medicines. >> they are very expensive, and that is the rub, savannah. if we're talking about commercial insurance, yeah, there's a little bit more wiggle room there in terms of covering for weight management, but take a look at how medicare covers this. it is covered for diabetes. it's covered for what's called secondary prevention for heart disease. so iyou're overweight or obese and you've had a heart attack or a stroke, for example, they will cover it. but medicare does not cover it for weight loss management alone. we have splot of time on our air talking about this.haveo turn 65 and arvery well these know they probably won't be able to get it covered by medicare. it's studies like this that we hope will definitely move the needle on coverage. it's definitely something that's super important. >> thank you, dr. natalie. >> thank you so much. let's go to the nfl, now, guys. we have some scary moments about at&t stadium, about two hours

so i feel like you've always been 100% unapologetically yourself. so i was thinking, when you were writing this book, you were probably like, well, look, this is me. take me or leave me. was it hard to put your heart on the page like that? >> yes, except it took me a long, long time. it was a journey, because it didn't start -- like, there was nothing about me when i was young, like, this is going to be cher. so it was a journey. and after i left sonny, i started to kind of grow, but i was 27, but i was 16. so i was making mistakes in public constantly. but i don't, like -- >> do you care when you make mistakes in public? >> well, i think i used to, but i just don't -- look at how cute that is? i just don't think i do anymore. like, what are they going to do to me now. i'm 78, what are they going to do to me.

>> you're 78? >> yeah? >> god, you look amazing! this is when i feel like you live life right. let's talk about this memoir. it's really revealing. i didn't know a lot of stuff about you when you were a little kid. >> that's what i think will be the most interesting for people, because they think they know me. and in a way, they know a good part of me. but in a way, there's a lot of parts -- things they don't know. >> when you're a little girl and those are really during the formative years. you were raised by a single mom, and neither of your parents early on could take care of you. you were in kind of a catholic home. >> is that -- >> yeah, my dad took us to scranton, pennsylvania and put me in an orphanage and my mom was working in an all-night diner. >> so she was trying to pay -- give enough money so she could finally take -- get you back and care for you. >> right, but she had to meet a congressman to do it. >> do you remember anything about being in the orphanage? >> not at all.

i mean, i was just five seconds old, you know. i was -- my mom said, when i went in, i wasn't walking, and when i came out, i was walking, but holding on. >> wow. >> so your mom, who was married multiple times, you and your sister debate -- >> i don't care. >> it doesn't matter. seven, eight, six. >> after a couple of times, it's like, mom, get a life. >> who cares? so you're a 16-year-old girl. >> yes. >> and you're waiting in line for coffee and look over and you see a boy. who's a little older than you. he's 27. >> right. you don't ask questions like that. >> who knows. >> no, no, no. he came in the restaurant, where we are, and he walked in, and i looked at him, and it was like, i didn't love him, he wasn't attractive, but it was a complete tony and maria moment. >> like from west side story. >> like a connect -- >> it's like everybody disappeared. i'm not kidding. and then i just looked at him -- because also, he was dressed so well. >> what was he wearing? >> he was wearing a mohair suit

and a mustard shirt with a white collar and a mustard tie. >> you remember. >> a beautiful bracelet that was like an i.d. bracelet, that was a watch. and the most beautiful hands and fingers i've ever seen. >> so you were 16. was your mom mad at you for wanting to date a guy who was 27? >> my mom didn't know. >> oh, she didn't? >> no, i told her i was living with a stewardess. >> so you moved right in with him? >> because i had no place to go. because i had to leave where i was living, but -- i had lost my job -- actually, i quit. i docked time cards. everybody hated me. and one day i just said, i quit. and i walked in, said good-bye to this one lady, and didn't even get my paycheck. >> so then you move in with sonny. platonically? >> he's very nice. he says, you know, you can move in with me. and i was like, yeah. and he said, no, no, cher, to be honest, i don't find you particularly attractive. and i was like, oh, well, that's terrible.

>> so a relationship ensues. you guys are -- i mean, you become icons together. you have incredible songs, shows, all the things. and then you note, like, sonny's starting to change. >> that's what happened. right after we -- >> what happened? >> in the middle of the sonny and cher show. >> what was he doing, what was changing? >> he just didn't care about me. i'm not so sure how much he cared for a little while, but i was just -- i was like -- i don't know, i was not an employee, that's for sure, but i was -- i didn't have any kind of freedom. >> so he ran the show, basically? >> yes. >> he did everything -- >> we had a company that i didn't even know was a company called cher enterprises and it was like i was born yesterday, i'm signing everything, have no idea what i'm signing. >> so of all the money that you guys made as a duo, he -- >> took it all. >> he took it all? he took it all? >> he took it all. and i said, i was there with you! and you -- i said, just tell me

morning. it is 856 a marcus washington san mateo county supervisors will debate calling for a special election. this is in response to the controversy surrounding the embattled sheriff cristina corpus. now that measure would amend the county charter. this is giving supervisors the power to remove the sheriff for cause. a rece independent investigation suggests that there are problems within the sheriff's office, and it also accuses corpus of having a personal relationship with her chief of staff. that goes too far. corpus, for her part, denying all allegations and vowing to fight to keep her job. happening now, our bob redell. following all of those developments, we'll have a live update for us
