experiencing heavy rain, strong winds and flooding. as for the rest of the bay area, conditions are relatively mild, but that will change. our team is tracking the incoming conditions. you could face. this is today in the bay. good thursday morning i'm marcus washington, and i'm laura garcia. our crews are spread across the bay area as this storm moves through. but first, let's check in with meteorologist kari hall. of course, she's leading our coverage this morning. and, kari, a wet start in a lot of places this morning. yes, and that includes san francisco, san bruno mountain, where we have our mobile doppler radar stormranger parked. and you can see that it is just covered with rainfall right now. and the breezy winds are still kicking up as this powerful storm that has been mainly impacting about half of the bay area over the past 24 hours, but it has made a major impact in those areas as the rain continues to come down and we're still seeing the yellows and even a little bit of orange there on the radar,

indicating some heavy rain just north of santa rosa. and getting a little bit lighter for some of the other areas farther south, but still a steady rainfall and soaking the ground. as we look at the peninsula over toward the east bay, there is some light rain that may affect your commute, but the main area we've been focused on is the north bay, because there is a flood watch and flood advisories in effect, and we could see an additional 3 to 7in of rainfall. and the mountains about 6 to 10in of rainfall. we've already had over ten inches of rain in parts of northern sonoma county. so we are going to continue to see that affecting parts of the north bay. but then eventually this storm is going to start to make a move farther south. not today, but starting early tomorrow morning. we're going to start to see that cold air pushing this atmospheric river south into the bay area and rain throughout the day in the tri-valley, the south bay, as well as the peninsula. so we're going to see things changing here over the next 24 hours. and we'll be tracking all of that. and it could cause some flooding

for people who live in low lying areas. we have today in the bay's bob redell joining us live from dublin with an important reminder. bob, good morning to you. kari good to hear from you. yes, we're in dublin and just a reminder that most excuse me, most local governments in the bay area offer this right here behind us, the free sandbagging stations. you might have to bring a shovel, but if you are living in a low lying area, you know the drill. you come out here, you get a free bags bag or bags and you fill them up. you take them home and you shore up the low lying areas on your property. not sure if that's going to be an issue here in the tri-valley this weekend, as this rain arrives, but of course it's dry right now. but as kerry mentioned, we'll start raining tomorrow. storms are expected here in the east bay, as i said, but up in the north bay, the wet weather, as kerry mentioned, has already arrived. the people who live in those low lying areas up there or along creeks, they're preparing, as they always do when these big storms are in the forecast cast. take, for exampl, sulfur creek in napa county was
6:04 am
barely a trickle yesterday morning, but as you can see last night our own thom jensen was reporting that it was much higher and muddier after that first day of heavy rain. by the way, sulfur creek still has to rise more than 11ft for there to be moderate flooding and more than 13ft for major flooding. yesterday, most napa county creeks and rivers saw similar water level increases of 2 to 3ft. but again, there's still a long way from spilling over their banks. reporting live here in dublin. bob redell today in the bay. all right, bob. and don't forget you can keep track of this rain with our nbc bay area app. haven't already done so. download it that way. are you going to be able to see that storm rolling into your neighborhood? just scan the qr code there on your screen to get your local weather from the way you like it, from the people you know. all right, so look, let's talk about the roads out there. of course, they are wet and a lot of places out there. mike, i know you have that traffic report and there's a traffic alert over in san francisco this morning. yeah. and there are some slick roadways. and so that

may have contributed to the conditions for this to become a jackknifed big rig earlier on, blocking four lanes, getting out of san francisco just around first the off ramp there. that's the last exit over landfall. and so that could be a huge problem getting onto the bay bridge. we do see the backup building now. there we go. we just saw more slowing eastbound. we don't typically see that getting out of san francisco. still no word on when that heavy duty tow truck can get there to clear that to get onto the lower deck. meanwhile, your commute direction westbound, you see the green highlighting. that means damp or slick roadways, likely throughout much of the east bay. but westbound 80 does show a lighter than typical volume, a better speeds overall, highway 37 does show gradual slowing all the way across, but highway four lighter through contra costa county. same thing out of hayward and in the south bay. just a mild northbound build. back to you. thank you very much, mike. 605 right now. happening today in san mateo county. one supervisor leading the effort to oust the county's embattled sheriff is promising to provide an update on the investigation, which triggered the controversy. it comes as the

right now, we want to get back to our microclimate weather alert for you this morning as we continue to monitor what's happening with that storm across the bay area. so right now you're looking at our storm ranger. it's scanning the top of mount saint bruno. and of course, those conditions out there in a lot of places wet this morning. meteorologist kari hall, of course, monitoring those. but you know, that flood watch is in effect for the north bay through saturday. and those rain totals expected to be higher up there. this is all compared to the rest of the bay area. but as we get deeper into the rainy season today in the bay, cinthia pimentel is reminding everyone of the threats. flooding can have hundreds of people die every year in floods. many of those deaths happen in cars, but this is preventable. let's take a look at this suv. and you can see that just six inches of rain could make you lose control of your car. we're going to bump that rain up to a foot, foot and a half, two feet. and the car can actually be swept away. now, if you live in areas that have flooded before, park in higher ground. if you can, and be

especially careful when it's dark and harder to recognize these dangers. you've probably heard the rhyme turn around, don't drown. it's a good reminder this rainy season to avoid driving over flooded area. you never know how deep it really is. for a look at what we can expect on the second storm day, i'll hand it over to kari for more details. yes, cynthia, those are some good tips and great information for anyone out and about in all of this heavy rain. take a look at how much we've already measured in parts of the north bay in santa rosa, calistoga. you had over six inches of rainfall. that is a lot of water. and in napa we've had over 2.5in of rainfall, almost an inch in fairfield, while concord had less than a quarter inch of rainfall. oakland, it was 4/10 of an inch of rainfall there, and over three quarters of an inch of rain in san francisco, elsewhere, next to nothing. so we are going to see things changing. but wow. i mean, this storm has been pretty impressive in northern sonoma county, has had nearly 11in of rainfall just
6:10 am
in one day. england had over 7.5in of rainfall. san anselmo over five and novato over three inches of rainfall. and it is still pouring. this is a live look in san rafael, where we are going to continue to see that rain in the north bay, and the storm will start to spread south tomorrow. and this weekend the rain continues with some breaks, so i'll time it out for you as you're trying to make some plans. and mike, that alert still in effect for eastbound i-80. it is getting out of san francisco onto the lower deck of the bay bridge. you're still down. four left lanes are blocked because of this jackknifed rig. the fire department is on scene in case there were any injuries that didn't hear about anything major going on, but it's a heavy duty tow truck that they need to clear it, and i'm worried that they're going to have to also clear it, not at any exits, because there may not be any available. they might have to take it eastbound all the way to treasure island and then figure out what to do, or perhaps all the way to the oakland side, where they have more room to work at the toll plaza. we're still following that. that's an unusual backup out of san

for today, the north bay, the focus of more rounds of rain. it is starting to shift a little bit farther south into san mate, portola valley, and also approaching palo alto and extending across the bay. but then it begins to lift back to the north as we go throughout today, and still the potential of more pockets of heavy rain, late morning into the early afternoon, and then notice the rain continues to rise northward, giving the rest of the bay area much more of a break from any wet weather, as we haven't really seen much in spots like livermore or san jose. we are going to see another dry day today with cloudy skies and breezy winds, but then look at what happens tomorrow. we start to see some cold air, kicking the system in gear and pushing it farther south. and by 6:00 tomorrow morning, we're not only seeing the rain in the north bay, but we're seeing it return to the peninsula, the east bay, and then eventually making it into san jose, morgan hill and gilroy by about 10 to 11:00 tomorrow morning. and then throughout the day that system stalls over the south bay. and that's what we're

really going to start to pick up on those higher rainfall totals. if you're going to the sierra this weekend, a winter storm watch will be in effect or it's in warning will be in effect starting tomorrow morning and continuing through saturday afternoon. we're looking at about 2 to 6ft of snow below 7000ft. it's in those very high elevations where we are going to see the higher snowfall totals, because as of now, it's pretty warm. but once that cold air comes in, we'll start to see it dropping some heavy snow. and we are looking at quite a bit of snow, a couple of feet potentially for some spots in the sierra. and another round of rain will come in. so there will be a brief break between saturday afternoon and early sunday before the next atmospheric river arrives. this one will be focused a little bit farther to the south and look at that. wednesday into thursday, we're seeing the things clearing out just in time for you to hit the road or catch a flight to join the family for thanksgiving. so we are going to

weather across the bay area. take a look at san rafael. it is pouring rain right now and the commute is so sloppy as they've had the past 24 hours at least of heavy rain coming through. so we're still seeing this atmospheric river funneling all of this moisture across northern california. and we are starting to see it making its way down the peninsula into the east bay. while still dry in the tri-valley and san jose, we may see some spotty showers within the next few hours. but of course, the focus has been in the north bay, where we've seen anywhere from about six to over ten inches of rainfall in the past 24 hours. we're setting records there while it's just now starting to get going for the peninsula, either 101 or 280, either drive is going to be wet. you'll at least encounter some spotty showers, but this activity is expected to lift back to the north, and santa rosa on northward will still have to deal with some heavy rain before this system gets kicked farther south starting tomorrow morning. so we'll time
6:33 am
it out and the impacts you'll see as we head into the weekend. that's coming up in a few minutes. all right. thanks, kari. well, you know, this morning we are seeing some damage, especially in parts of the north bay. that is where today in the bay is. ginger conejero saab joins us live. and, ginger, i understand a few trees came crashing down. that's right. good morning, marcus and laura. and that really is no surprise considering the amount of rainfall that has come down here in the north bay. as kari was just talking about, a few trees have come down within the first 24 hours of this storm. i want to show you one. actually, right now we are in forestville. this is a tree that came down yesterday. on to a home and onto a car. you're taking a look. i mean, it's pretty dark out here. and that might also be partly because there are downed power lines that came down with this large fir. this is what it looked like yesterday when it first came down around 430 in the afternoon. the large fir on to a fell onto a house and a

car. a woman suffered minor injuries. the impact is the impact rather destroying the house and the car instead. i want to show you some video from this morning of another tree that came down on bohemian highway, just north of occidental in sonoma county. this tree fell around 230 in the morning. we are also told that that tree took down power lines, so power may still be out in that area. now, on the first night of this storm, there were power outages, downed trees and flooding as well. the water about half a mile deep in places in santa rosa last night, another downed tree on the 200 block of burnett street, also in santa rosa. that tree came down, and with it, the lights went out for a couple dozen folks, and one man described the tree fall and the show that came down with the destruction of some solar panels. yeah, i was sitting right there, and through there i could see all the sparks from the transformer blowing. it's just showering sparks everywher.
6:35 am
now it doesn't look like there will be the possibility of actually clearing this tree any time soon. the rain has just has been marcus and laura. we've either been driving or around different cities in the north bay, and this is really just the beginning of the storm. officials are still saying things are manageable at this point, but as kari has talked about all morning, this is really still the beginning of what we anticipate will last for the next several days. we're live in forestville. ginger conejero saab today in the bay. yeah, certainly a lot more to go. all right. thanks, ginger. the ground gets so saturated and we know the storm has really been walloping travelers trying to get a head start on the holidays at sfo and travelers at other bay area airports also feeling the impact. thanksgiving now just a week away. of course you want to plan ahead today in the bay's kris sanchez joining us live from san jose mineta airport this morning. chris, how are things looking over there? well, right now we can report
6:36 am
one delay for a plane arriving here at sjc this morning. but we now know that you can expect delays of almost three hours all day long at sfo. and that is because of the windy conditions that we're seeing here in the south bay, but also the rain that is coming down on the runways there at sfo. we can take a live look. you can see those conditions have been deteriorating through the morning. they were really terrible yesterday. and travelers at the airport had to deal with delays. they were trying to rebook travel on different flights, but with this atmospheric river, they're going to be continuing impacts when it comes to weather. because when the weather is this bad, stormy, windy, low visibility. sfo has to land about 25 to 30 fewer planes per hour, and the weather at your destination also a factor. so we talked with an aviation expert who tells us these long, stormy patterns like
6:37 am
what we're in right now, really create a domino effect. do you say, well, i'm not going, you know, to new york or boston or denver or someplace where there's bad weather. your flight, that could be coming in to take you to hawaii, sunny and warm. could be delayed because it's stuck someplace else in bad weather. now that aviation expert says always check your flight even before you leave the house to make sure that your plane is where it's supposed to be. because of that domino effect, he recommends using the flight aware app. but again, we are expecting delays at sfo of up to three hours all day long because of the terrible conditions, and we know that the busiest travel day is supposed to be tuesday. ahead of the thanksgiving holiday. and we've been listening to kari's forecast, and we know that there's another system coming then. so make sure you plan ahead at sjc. kris sanchez today in the bay. all right chris, thanks. and it's always such a
6:38 am
busy time of the year. it seems like already just looking forward to the weekend. we're going to see rain. yeah. and so i think being flexible is key here whether you're driving or if you can change the flight a little bit, you may have some better luck if you're watching the forecast very closely today, we're going to see a lot of issues in the north bay as well as sfo. but for san jose, things are looking pretty good here. now going into the next several days, we see this system dropping south. if you're going toward the central coast, central parts of california, there will be some rain moving in those areas. while we'll start to get a bit of a break here in the bay area between saturday afternoon and sunday, and then looking at monday, a new system arriving, this is what we'll talk. what chris was talking about that may impact travel on monday and tuesday, but look at wednesday and thursday. everything is all clear across the state and this is when you may be able to have better luck getting there with no delays, no issues. after all of this rain has passed and it

that he, quote, rejects it with disgust. that ruling. 643 for you this morning, the incoming trump administration continues to lobby senators, asking them to say yes to their cabinet picks. but scott mcgrew joins us now. at least two of those cabinet picks will likely face a lot of pushback, for sure. it's an it's hegseth and gates, though a lot of senators also worry about kennedy and gabbard, too. but hegseth and gates both face accusations of sexual misconduct, sexual crimes in some cases. vice president elect vance has gotten involved, taking gates to pick for attorney general to meet with senators yesterday, and he'll do the same for hegseth today. trump wants hegseth to run the department of defense. now, the ethics committee looked into allegations that gates had a sexual relationship with a high school girl while he was congressman, and we now understand that report will not be released. the thinking by republican leadership is gates is no longer a congressman. he quit last week. so the house has

no jurisdiction. hegseth nomination meanwhile, getting pushback from mark milley. mark milley is formally the highest ranking person in all of the american military appointed by trump in his first term. hegseth, you remember, wants to remove women from combat roles. now you're going to hear an older soundbite from hegseth. and then milley just now, i'm straight up just saying we should not have women in combat roles. it hasn't made us more effective, hasn't made us more lethal, has made fighting more complicated. most of them actually are a lot of them are pushed. i shouldn't say most, but many are pushed into a combat track because they're so highly capable. but if they had their first choice, it probably wouldn't be that. don't lecture me about women in combat. women have been in combat, and it doesn't matter if that 7.62 hits you in the chest. no one gives a if it's a woman or a guy who pulled that trigger, you're still dead. so if you meet the standards our military must be and always should be, a standards based, merit based

military. period. full stop. it's a big day in congress. it's office space lottery day, when new members find out where they're going to work. now, the person who picks the token with the number one on it picks first, right? all the choices are pretty bad. senior members have the good offices. they're doing it as we speak. take a look. oh, come on. oh, no. remember, elect goldman is number 48. 48. oh, it is number 47. 47. oh, that's a terrible number. so if you're one of sam liccardo's new constituents, you can probably look for his office near the boiler room. and marcus not the good boiler room. the other one. 000. newbie freshman. yep, yep. thanks, scott. 643 for

you this morning. you know, tonight we continue our important and sometimes uncomfortable conversations about race and history and our ongoing series, race in america. the conversation one person we spoke with is jose antonio vargas. he's a pulitzer prize winning journalist, filmmaker and author. he's also undocumented, and he hasn't seen his mother in 31 years. this is since coming to the bay area. my mom put me on a plane. she said. the last thing she said that, you know, it might be cold there. she didn't come with your mom. my mom did not come with me. she introduced me to a man whom she said was my uncle. i landed in mountain view august 3rd, 1993. well, vargas telling us undocumented californians like himself survive and live in an underground economy. this is where they can buy a car, own or rent a home and pay taxes. you can see the rest of that story when you watch our new episode of race in america, the conversation. that's tonight at 730. also, tonight is the

opening night for san jose's christmas in the park drive through edition, and it's a newer tradition that is really giving life to one of the city's oldest traditions. the drive through experience was born out of necessity during the pandemic, when we couldn't gather at christmas in the park downtown, so organizers created a mile long light show through history park, set to music. organizers say it was such a big hit, so they turned it into a way to get people to get festive while raising funds to keep christmas in the park downtown free and open to all drive through christmas in the park opens tonight at history park in san jose, and it runs through new year's day. the event is sponsored by a generous donation from the voletta and tj rogers. monday through thursday. admission $25 per car. friday and saturday, it's $30 no matter how many people you stuff in that car. new this year sundays are bikes only. for $10. you can ride around as long as you like. you can get your tickets at christmas in the park.com a fun

tradition. yeah. you know, when i first did that, during the daylight hours, i actually rode my bike through there and it was pretty cool to see, you know, even before the lights came on. but now they would charge you for it. there you go. no sneaking in, marcus, put lights on your bike. there were reflectors, so there you go. so, marcus, when you're driving through there. well, the weather looks good for this evening. you know, it's cloudy, but it doesn't even matter if it's raining with the staying inside your vehicle, driving on through, seeing the lights. it's still a great experience. and we may have the rain tomorrow. so today, with the grand opening and everything happening, may be the best day to go. our temperatures will be in the mid 60s later on today, but you'll probably have the heater on inside the vehicle. this storm has been setting records. take a look at what the national weather service put out about this atmospheric river in sonoma county. at the airport, we measured nearly seven inches of rainfall in one day. in the previous record was a little
6:50 am
over six inches of rain that happened not too long ago. in 2021. this is more than a month's worth of rain all falling in one day, and we had some pretty significant rainfall totals in the north bay, with napa over 2.5in, mount tam, nearly five inches of rainfall there, and calistoga had 6.5in of rainfall. now, the farther south you go, the rainfall totals drop off a cliff we're seeing in hayward. we had a 100th of an inch of rainfall and none measured in san jose. while we did have quite a bit in much of the north bay, some of our higher elevations measuring that rainfall and in venado it was almost 11in of rainfall. that's in northern sonoma county, where we are seeing the rainfall totals over three inches is in novato and san anselmo had over five inches. this storm is still blasting the north bay, and it will continue throughout the day, being driven by that very powerful area of low pressure still around the gulf of alaska.
6:51 am
and we're going to have this rain continuing for today. just kind of waving up and down. so there's that sharp cut off of where we are seeing the rain and where we haven't yet seen a lot of it, but it is starting to make its way farther south down the peninsula over the santa cruz mountains, and may drop a little bit of rain over san jose within the next couple of hours. but the rest of the day will be dry. we've been focused on the north bay because look at the yellows and the reds here. storm rangers picking up on that activity still pouring in sonoma county while around our storm ranger where it's parked on san bruno mountain, we are seeing some light showers up and down the peninsula, and i have this beautiful rainbow sent in to me yesterday morning from lauren. and this is at the moraga country club. a little bit of rain and also those clouds. a beautiful rainbow there starting out yesterday morning. and we're still seeing an amazing sunrise over parts of the south bay. can't really see the sun rising in the north bay, where the rain still continues. and we're at
6:52 am
noon today, still seeing some heavy rain. while much of the rest of the bay area is just seeing cloudy skies and breezy winds, not expecting much rain south of the golden gate once again. but tomorrow some cold air is going to kick in and start to push this atmospheric river farther south into the rest of the bay area. by this time tomorrow morning and continuing throughout the day. and then we'll turn our attention to the south county, where this system will stall out and bring in heavy rain for tomorrow evening and into early saturday. so not much rainfall expected from san francisco, where we could see a quarter inch of rainfall today to over an inch of additional rainfall in the north bay. tomorrow is when the tri-valley, the peninsula and the south bay really starts to rack up those rainfall totals that will continue off and on throughout the weekend with some breaks. but a new storm system arrives on sunday and brings in more rain monday. and then it tapers off on wednesday. mike, you still have a tough time getting to the lower deck of the bay bridge. we can see the lower

deck right here. remember on the san francisco side, eastbound away from the city is split into two decks. the lower is eastbound again. counter commute. we have the issue getting on to that lower deck out of san francisco as you approach the first the last off ramp there in the city. we do have that jackknifed rig. again. chp says they think maybe 830 before they can clear that. and so that's restricting traffic heavily out of the city. the backup just north of two a, the 280 split with 101 north over toward eastbound 80 is the big problem this morning. the rest of your commute operates relatively well. but slowing as that rain traveled through these portions of contra costa and alameda counties. be careful. back to you. thank you very much, mike. it is 652. happening now. a colorado judge today is expected to hold an emergency hearing in a recent lawsuit seeking to block a san jose state transgender volleyball player from taking part in next week's mountain west conference tournament. that player has not come out publicly. and for privacy concerns, we're not naming her. the lawsuit claims title nine rights are being

violated by allowing a transgender athlete in women's sports. and we're back within minutes with that powerful storm, including new damage being seen in the north bay overnight. stay with us. you're watching today in e bayth the volvo holiday sales event. perfect for wherever your little passengers want to go.

we're seeing. this morning as well. this is a large fir tree that fell and is now blocking the road. it's fallen to a home and a car that is parked outside here in forestville. you can see the damage on that home and on top of that tree. a woman, we're told, suffered minor injuries. it doesn't look like this tree is going to be cleared anytime soon. with the amount of rainfall and really how tricky it is to get up here. there's another tree down on bohemian highway this morning that's just north of occidental in sonoma county. this is video into our newsroom this morning. that tree fell around 230 overnight. also taking down power lines. we're told power is out in that area. now sonoma county taking preemptive measures this morning to close school districts. some of the school districts that you see on your screen now include fort ross, guerneville, monte rio and montgomery. we will continue our storm coverage throughout the morning and bring you the latest on nbcbayarea.com. for now. we'll send it back to you guys. all right. thanks so much, ginger. and keep track of that rain with our nbc bay area app. you can

download it to see when that storm moving right through your neighborhood. all you have to do is scan the qr code there on your screen. this is to get your local weather your way from the people you know. all right. checking in with kari. at least the south bay will get a break from the rain. yes, a couple of sprinkles this morning, but other than that, it's going to be dry the rest of the day. of course, we've been focused on the north bay, where the heavy rain still continues with storm ranger. also, if you do have that. nbc bay area app, you can zoom in. you can see what storm ranger is scanning at the time and of course, it's right around between cloverdale and santa rosa, where the heaviest rain has shifted for now. but it has traveled through the city where we had that jackknifed big rig still there, blocking most of eastbound 80, getting onto the lower deck out of san francisco. chp estimates about 830 when they can finally clear that heavy rig from the area. we'll track that, but very much drier roadways and conditions and lighter flow of traffic for the south bay as we approach thanksgiving. well, the today show just moments away. but for more local news and weather coverage, stay with today in the bay. we stream on roku, pluto
