favorites in the afc north. that was part of the story. the other part, that field right there. it started as a wintry mix and turned into blizzard like conditions in the second half. >> better late than never for winter. it's a dramatic shift from the unseasonably warm temperatures we have been having. it's the first significant snow of the season. as you can see it's falling in champion, pennsylvania, as we speak. >> whether it's snow or rain, a lot of the northeast getting some much needed precipitation from this system after that week's long drought. meanwhile, out west, that atmospheric river we have been talking about, it's still causing some dangerous conditions. some areas getting up to 15 inches of rain. tens of thousands still without power after days of downpours and heavy wind us out there. >> all of this is playing out as the thanksgiving travel rush will get underway in earnest this weekend. this is philadelphia this morning. a lot of travelers getting that early start on what is expected to be a record-breaking holiday season for travel. got it all covered. we've got mr. roker's forecast. let's get started with nbc's sam

brock, from snowy pennsylvania this morning. hi, sam. >> savannah, craig, good morning, look around me. this snow started around dinner time last night, and it has not stopped. in the valleys outside of scranton, it's been a few inches of accumulation. you can see from the top of the car, i don't think saying 3 or 4 inches would be a stretch. it's 7 inches by nearby mount poconos, as of 4:00 this morning, and you talk to folks in northeastern pennsylvania, they're surprised because only a week ago it was in the 50s and 60s. now we're here. they say it's a little bit late for the first snowfall of the season. they are glad the snow has arrived. >> this morning, for millions of americans, wintry weather is finally here. a far reaching storm system from the midwest to the northeast, bringing some of the first major snowfalls of the season. >> the weather delivering stuck

cleveland, chicago has picked up 3 inches of snow so far. parts of northwestern new jersey, upwards of 10 inches. right now we've got winter weather advisories, johnstown, all the way down to asheville, north carolina, so we are looking at a hot of snow. snow will be piling up in the appalachians to the cat skills. rain some places, especially up into new england, picking up 1 to 2 inches of rain, snowfall. power outages to elken, some places a foot of ♪. out west, you can see that atmospheric river bringing heavy rain to northern california, we have got a moderate risk of heavy flooding, heavy rain below. 5,500 feet, but above that, we're looking at a lot of snow, but 5 to 10 inches of rain in parts of california, and more than 3 feet of snow in the higher elevations from mount

shasta to mammoth lakes, guys. >> al, thank you, we'll check back, and the rough weather will impact travel plans for a lot of americans. many of whom are trying to get a head start on the thanksgiving journey. nbc's tom costello joins us from reagan national with that part of the story. hi there, tom. >> let me tell you what happened to me yesterday. i'm in chicago, that snowstorm moves in. we get a lot more than expected and pretty soon the delays start building at o'hare. took me 2 1/2 hours to finally get out of o'hare, get here 2 1/2 hours late, tis the season. it's the weather. it's record volume. leaving early at thanksgiving. it's going to be packed airports and packed roads. >> thanksgiving is still days away, but this morning, many americans are already headed out the door. the nation's airports bracing for the busiest thanksgiving travel rush in history. >> we are a week out from thanksgiving. and tsa is expecting a potentially record breaking holiday travel season.

>> that includes a 6% increase at tsa check points compared to last year. >> this year has already been the busiest in tsa history. all ten of our top busiest days in our 23 years have occurred since the 24th of may of this year. >> last summer, the tsa screened 3 million passengers in a day for the first time ever. it's expecting to break that record again over thanksgiving. with tuesday, wednesday, and the sunday after projected to have the greatest passenger volumes. but snow and wet weather are already impacting travel. a snowstorm in chicago on thursday led to a 65% delay rate at o'hare. while rain in boston delayed a quarter of the flights. meanwhile, crews on the west coast are still cleaning up debris after a bomb cyclone hit the region earlier this week. creating dangerous conditions on the roads. the washington state department of transportation.

still advising drivers to avoid travel over mountain passes there. >> 70% of americans planning to hit the road. not a surprise, but gas prices now at their lowest thanksgiving level since 2020. >> and aaa says gas prices are actually down on average nationally. by about 25 cents, compared to this time last year. with more than half of the country paying $3 or less per gallon. but even with a full tank, drivers should be prepared to hit the brakes. >> if traffic is usually bad where you live when it's not a holiday, double that. and it's probably going to be that over thanksgiving. >> reporter: yeah, and you know, most people do, in fact, drive on this holiday. here's the deal, the busiest day is going to be wednesday before thanksgiving on the roads, and sunday after, and experts say especially on wednesday, the worst time to drive is going to be 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. because the kids are getting out of school, parents are getting off work. everybody's trying to hit the roads at the same time. the earlier you can leave, the better.

same goes for sunday as well. savannah. >> tom, thank you, glad you got home from chicago. thanks. turning now to the latest on the trump transition, the president-elect pivoting quickly to a new choice for attorney general. the former ag of florida, pam bondi, after the sudden withdrawal of embattled pick matt gaetz, nbc's chief white house correspondent, peter alexander has the details and the reaction to the pick as well. peter, good morning. >> first, about pam bondi, she is one of donald trump's most loyal supporters. likely to have a smoother path to confirmation as attorney general than matt gaetz, but the fact that trump stuck with z so long speaks volumes about how he views his mandate. trump knew about the ethics investigation and that gaetz was widely unpopular among lawmakers yet he pressed forward. ultimately a source close to the transition tells nbc once the house ethics report started to leak out, there was no way for gaetz to make it. this morning, president-elect trump quickly turning the page on his first failed cabinet

pick, former congressman tt gaetz, selecting pam bondi. an experienced prosecutor, twice elected as florida's ag, trump praising her work combatting the opioid crisis. a long time trump ally, bondi helped amplify trump's false claims about the 2020 election. >> we have won pennsylvania, and they're not going to take it away from us. >> reporter: nbc news has learned at least five senate republicans were hard no votes on gaetz's nomination, many demanding the release of an ethics committee report, including allegations he paid women for sex and that he had sex with a 17-year-old girl at a party in 2017. according to a source familiar with the matter, there was a second alleged sexual encounter with the same 17-year-old and another woman. gaetz has denied the accusations and no charges were filed against him after the justice department investigating similar allegations. also this morning, new questions

about trump's pick to lead the pentagon, pete hegseth. monterey police detailing a report of a woman's allegation she was sexually assaulted by the former combat veteran turned fox news host. according to the report, the woman says she met hegseth at a hotel at one point blacking out, alleging her took her phone and blocked her attempt to leave a hotel room and that she remembered saying no a lot. >> i was fully investigated and i was completely cleared. >> reporter: the report does not exonerate hegseth but gives conflicting accounts of the incident from hegseth and his accuser. authorities have not said why he was not charged. hegseth later paid the accuser as part of a confidential civil agreement. hegseth has earned more support than gaetz among republicans. >> i believe he's going to be just fine. >> reporter: new headlines on trump's pick to lead health and human services, former rival turned ally, robert f. kennedy jr., after cnn published audio from kennedy's radio show in

2016 where he praised a guest's writing on trump's supporters. >> you write about trump, the way you build a truly vicious nationalist movement, belligerent idiots to a larger group of opportunists. >> sharing words from rfk jr. saying i no longer hold this belief and i now regret having made those statements. savannah. >> back to these confirmation battles, matt gaetz is out, but there's still pete hegseth, the defense department pick, tulsi gabbard for the d and i, they have their own controversies swirling around them. what do republicans do now? >> reporter: you raise a good question. going forward, that is a lot of focus. the other nominees face intense scrutiny, now that gaetz is out, the sexual assault allegation against hegseth, tulsi gabbard's kre credentials and past comments,

being supportive of russia, and those could complicate their paths, but, savannah, i think it's unclear whether senate republicans want to upset trump and his allies by jecting a second pick, stalling his agenda. if you want to get primaried, vote against trump's nominations, but the bottom line here, gaetz's experience does show there appears to be a limit to how much drama that trump is willing to accept. savannah. >> peter alexander at the white house, thank you. also this morning, a new concern over e. coli now. more than 160,000 pounds of fresh and frozen ground beef products shipped to restaurants nationwide are now being recalled due to a potential contamination and it's the same strain linked to the e. coli scare at mcdonald's. nbc's senior business correspondent christine romans with a little bit more on this. it feels like we have been talking about e. coli for months now. what can you tell us about the

latest recall? >> important information for consumers about food safety. 165,000 pounds of ground beef, 15 cases in minnesota, and investigators there linked it back to a distributor in detroit. symptoms began between november 2nd and the 10th, and this is the same strain linked to that mcdonald's onion case. wolverine packing is the name of the company that distributed this meat, and this is what they say. they have notified all customers that received the product. they are going to conduct an intensive review to fully figure out where it went and make sure that they have the highest standards of production there. so these were sent. this meat was sent to restaurants, the concern is it could still be in freezers. >> people freeze their meat, get a good price, you freeze it. is there a lot number or something? >> a use by date of november 14th. look at that on the packaging. these are frozen products with an october 22 production date.

that's according to the usda, and this is about 100 plus fresh and frozen ground beef products, we're talking brands like 1855 beef, davis creek meals, farmers choice, you can see them all there. you can go to the usda and fda web sites to make sure if you are a business owner and you think you have this in your freezer, you need to get rid of this. >> thank you, christine. have a good weekend. let's go to the nfl, as mentioned at the top of the show, if you tuned in for thursday night football. the browns hosting the steelers, and it was a snowy one. by the second half, it was blizzard like conditions, and driving snow making passing and catching, well, tricky for the players. in the end, though, it was the home team, the browns coming from behind, taking the lead with under a minute to play. >> from the gun, hands it off, to the end zone, touchdown browns. >> cleveland wins it 24-19.

stories. the latest on our microclimate weather alert. i'm ginger conejero saab in santa rosa, where a flood warning remains in effect until 4:00 this afternoon. a flood advisory will last for the entire north bay until three tomorrow morning. now, flooding is still a concern here in santa rosa, but as of this morning, santa rosa police say there are no road closures. geyserville unified was also added to the list of school districts that are closed in sonoma county. we'll have more online at nbcbayarea.com. let's get a look at that forecast right now with meteorologist kari hall. and we've had record amounts of rainfall for parts of the north bay over the past couple of days as this storm system continues to rain down over the north bay. still focused on those areas, but eventually we'll start to see much more of the bay area getting in on some wet weather moving into late morning, as well as the afternoon. later on tonight we're going to see the rain ramping up for the south bay into the south county. a brief break before we see more spotty showers in the forecast

were in for another major twist. >> good evening, it's ryan borgwardt. >> this proof of life video from the wisconsin man police say staged his own death came as a shock to investigators. >> i'm in my apartment, i am safe, secure, no problem. >> the specific location of the married father of three is still unknown. but this morning, green lake county sheriff mark padoll says his department is e-mailing ryan borgwardt daily. >> our biggest concern was that he was safe and well. >> reporter: borgwardt was reported missing in august after police found his capsized kayak and fishing rod, wallet and keys, and vehicle parked near wisconsin's green lake. >> he picked green lake because it was the deepest lake in wisconsin. he did the research. >> reporter: but in october, the department learned borgwardt's

passport was run in canada the day after he was reported missing and he moved funds to a foreign bank, took out a $375,000 life insurance policy for his family and began communicating with a woman in uzbekistan. >> he had a plan, his plan didn't work out. >> reporter: he used an inflatable boat to paddle off the lake, right a stashed e bike 70 miles to madison, hopping on a bus that took him through detroit and into canada where the sheriff says he got on a plane to europe. >> he did say he didn't expect us to go more than two weeks searching for him. i hate to tell you, he picked the wrong sheriff and the wrong department. >> reporter: padoll said the obstruction charges will be filed within weeks and that the department will fight to get back up to $40,000 spent on the extensive search. but his main message is an emotional ask for borgwardt to come home to his family for the holidays. >> kids are the most important

east bay. last night we saw people filling up sandbags in martinez and public works teams in oakland are trying to make sure there are no clogged storm drains when the rain finally arrives. let's check in with meteorologist kari hall. so, kari, what conditions are we looking at now? well, the north bay is going on day three of all of this heavy rainfall. while in san jose, we have yet to measure a drop. and eventually we'll start to see this rain coming in, but still pouring in. san rafael and areas to the north. as we're seeing that as the target of this atmospheric river. still, that steady rain moving in and eventually we're expecting this to begin to bump its way to the south and affect much more of the bay area going into late morning into the afternoon, as well as this evening, where we may see some heavy downpours around 3 to 5:00 for san jose into the south county as it slowly starts to move out. and there will be a brief break overnight with some spotty showers continuing into the first part of the day tomorrow. clearing out for the evening, and we'll be tracking the next storm after that. laura marcus. thanks so much, kari.

conditions. parts of california. let's go to al, he's got a lot to keep his eye on and the weekend forecast. >> good morning, guys, and good morning to you here in the northeast. we've got a mix of rain and snow as the storm system starts to develop. it's going to be moving to the north. in the meantime, syracuse, scranton, williamsport, all looking at light snow. 10 million people impacted from syracuse, new york, to asheville, with winter weather advisories, winter storm warnings. that system will just kind of hang around the northeast, snow will pile up from the appalachians to the cat skills. the heaviest rain going to be into the northern new england and along the spine of the alleghenys, we're looking at anywhere from 1 to 2 inches of rain. snowfall, we are talking about some spots picking up to a foot, especially down in the appalachian mountains, and then out west, that atmospheric river bringing more heavy rain, northern california on into parts of coastal oregon. we're going to be watching the risk of really heavy flooding from reading to santa rosa.

peter says medication has helped stabilize his symptoms. giving him precious extra time with family before alzheimer's takes over. >> it freed me up to move forward. and live life more. >> so courageous for peter to share his story. you mentioned this medication that was helping stabilize his symptoms and so many people think once you get that diagnosis, there's nothing you can do. but he's taking something. what is it? >> right now, there aren't many treatments, savannah, you're right, but there are things you can do. for example, peter is taking a drug to help with memory. he's taking an antidepressant for mood. there's an fda drug called la laquembe, peter says he is considering that as well. but experts say that the real breakthrough is in using ai to diagnose patients early.

so many people are in the early stages of alzheimer's. they get misdiagnosed and for years they go back and forth, and there aren't that many neurologists, actually, who can actually proper diagnose, but hopefully ai will change that, and then that will bring even better treatments to help delay the symptoms. so it's an exciting field. people want it to be quicker than it is, but ai has a lot of promise n it. >> feels like we're making strides. really does feel like we're starting to make strides. >> hopefully. crossing fingers. >> have a good weekend. >> you too. shifting gears now, to another check of the weather. what do you say, mr. roker? >> what say i? i'd say we've got interesting weather at both ends of the country. here in the northeast, the storm system getting itself together, and it's still bringing snow through the appalachians, the allegheny mountains. we've also got that atmospheric river, bringing a lot of wet weather. northern california on into the pacific northwest coast.
